`Aisha said, "O my head!" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If that (i.e., your death) should happen while I am
still alive, I would ask Allah to forgive you and would invoke Allah for you." `Aisha said, "O my life
which is going to be lost! By Allah, I think that you wish for my death, and if that should happen then
you would be busy enjoying the company of one of your wives in the last part of that day." The
Prophet said, "But I should say, 'O my head!' I feel like calling Abu Bakr and his son and appoint (the
former as my successors lest people should say something or wish for something. Allah will insist (on
Abu Bakr becoming a Caliph) and the believers will prevent (anyone else from claiming the
Caliphate)," or "..Allah will prevent (anyone else from claiming the Caliphate) and the believers will
insist (on Abu Bakr becoming the Caliph).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 93, Hadith 77
Ya`la used to say, "I wish I could see Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at the time when he is being inspired divinely."
Ya`la added "While the Prophet (ﷺ) was at Al-Ja'rana, shaded with a cloth sheet (in the form of a tent) and
there were staying with him, some of his companions under it, suddenly there came to him a bedouin
wearing a cloak and perfumed extravagantly. He said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ! What is your opinion
regarding a man who assumes the state of Ihram for `Umra wearing a cloak after applying perfume to
his body?" `Umar signalled with his hand to Ya`la to come (near). Ya`la came and put his head
(underneath that cloth sheet) and saw the Prophet (ﷺ) red-faced and when that state (of the Prophet (ﷺ) ) was
over, he said, "Where is he who as already asked me about the `Umra?" The man was looked for and
brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), "As for the perfume you have applied to your body,
wash it off your body) thrice, and take off your cloak, and then do in your `Umra the rites you do in
your Hajj."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 358
Marwan and Al Miswar bin Makhramah told that when the deputation of the Hawazin came to the Muslims and asked the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) to return to them their property, the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) said to them “with me are those whom you see”. The speech dearest to me is the one which is true, so choose (one of the two) either the captives or the property. They said “We choose our captives. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) stood up, extolled Allaah and then said “To proceed, your brethren have come repentant I have considered that I should return their captives to them, so let those of you who are willing to release the captives act accordingly, but those who wish to hold on to what they have till we give them some of the first booty Allaah gives us may do so. The people said “We are willing for that (to release their captives), Apostle of Allaah. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) said “We cannot distinguish between those of you who have granted that and those who have not , so return till your headmen may tell us about your affair. The people then returned and their headmen spoke to them, then they informed that they were agreeable and had given their permission.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 15, Hadith 217
The Prophet (ﷺ) delivered a sermon and said, "You (people) will be gathered before Allah (on the Day of
Resurrection) bare-footed, naked and uncircumcised." (The Prophet (ﷺ) then recited):-- 'As We began the
first creation We shall repeat it. (It is) a promise We have undertaken and truly We shall do it.' and
added, "The first man who will be dressed on the Day of Resurrection, will be Abraham. Lo! Some
men from my followers will be brought and taken towards the left side, whereupon I will say, 'O Lord,
(these are) my companions!' It will be said, 'You do not know what new things they introduced (into
the religion) after you.' I will then say as the righteous pious slave, Jesus, said, 'I was a witness over
them while I dwelt among them...(to His Statement)..and You are the Witness to all things.' (5.117)
Then it will be said, '(O Muhammad) These people never stopped to apostate since you left them."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 262
"The Messenger of Allah used to teach his Companions to perform Istikharah in all matters, just as he used to teach them Surahs from the Qur'an. He said: 'If any one of you is deliberating about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two Rak'ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi 'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as'aluka min fadlika, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta'lamu wa la a'lam, wa anta 'allam al-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra khayrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa aqibati amri faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Allahumma, wa in kunta ta'lamu annahu sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri fasrifhu 'anni wasrifni 'anhu waqdur li al-khayr haythu kana, thumma radini bihi. (O Allah, I seek Your guidance (in making a choice) by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: both in this world and in the Hereafter), then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge it is bad for me and for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: for me both in this world and the next), then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me pleased with it.)"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 26, Hadith 58
The Prophet (ﷺ) sent a Sariya of spies and appointed `Asim bin Thabit, the grandfather of `Asim bin
`Umar bin Al-Khattab, as their leader. So they set out, and when they reached (a place) between
'Usfan and Mecca, they were mentioned to one of the branch tribes of Bani Hudhail called Lihyan. So,
about one-hundred archers followed their traces till they (i.e. the archers) came to a journey station
where they (i.e. `Asim and his companions) had encamped and found stones of dates they had brought
as journey food from Medina.
The archers said, "These are the dates of Medina," and followed their traces till they took them over.
When `Asim and his companions were not able to go ahead, they went up a high place, and their
pursuers encircled them and said, "You have a covenant and a promise that if you come down to us,
we will not kill anyone of you." `Asim said, "As for me, I will never come down on the security of an
infidel. O Allah! Inform Your Prophet about us." So they fought with them till they killed `Asim along
with seven of his companions with arrows, and there remained Khubaib, Zaid and another man to
whom they gave a promise and a covenant. So when the infidels gave them the covenant and promise,
they came down. When they captured them, they opened the strings of their arrow bows and tied them
with it. The third man who was with them said, "This is the first breach in the covenant," and refused
to accompany them. They dragged him and tried to make him accompany them, but he refused, and
they killed him. Then they proceeded on taking Khubaib and Zaid till they sold them in Mecca. The
sons of Al-Harith bin `Amr bin Naufal bought Khubaib. It was Khubaib who had killed Al-Harith bin
`Amr on the day of Badr. Khubaib stayed with them for a while as a captive till they decided
unanimously to kill him. (At that time) Khubaib borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of Al-
Harith to shave his pubic hair. She gave it to him. She said later on, "I was heedless of a little baby of
mine, who moved towards Khubaib, and when it reached him, he put it on his thigh.
When I saw it, I got scared so much that Khubaib noticed my distress while he was carrying the razor
in his hand. He said 'Are you afraid that I will kill it? Allah willing, I will never do that,' " Later on she
used to say, "I have never seen a captive better than Khubaib Once I saw him eating from a bunch of
grapes although at that time no fruits were available at Mecca, and he was fettered with iron chains,
and in fact, it was nothing but food bestowed upon him by Allah." So they took him out of the
Sanctuary (of Mecca) to kill him. He said, "Allow me to offer a two-rak`at prayer." Then he went to
them and said, "Had I not been afraid that you would think I was afraid of death, I would have prayed
for a longer time." So it was Khubaib who first set the tradition of praying two rak`at before being
executed. He then said, "O Allah! Count them one by one," and added, 'When I am being martyred as
a Muslim, I do not care in what way I receive my death for Allah's Sake, because this death is in
Allah's Cause. If He wishes, He will bless the cut limbs." Then `Uqba bin Al-Harith got up and
martyred him. The narrator added: The Quraish (infidels) sent some people to `Asim in order to bring
a part of his body so that his death might be known for certain, for `Asim had killed one of their chiefs
on the day of Badr. But Allah sent a cloud of wasps which protected his body from their messengers
who could not harm his body consequently.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 130
`Abdullah;- performed the Hajj and we reached Al-Muzdalifa at or about the time of the `Isha' prayer.
He ordered a man to pronounce the Adhan and Iqama and then he offered the Maghrib prayer and
offered two rak`at after it. Then he asked for his supper and took it, and then, I think, he ordered a
man to pronounce the Adhan and Iqama (for the `Isha' prayer). (`Amr, a sub-narrator said: The
intervening statement 'I think', was said by the sub-narrator Zuhair) (i.e. not by `Abdur-Rahman).
Then `Abdullah offered two rak`at of `Isha' prayer. When the day dawned, `Abdullah said, "The
Prophet never offered any prayer at this hour except this prayer at this time and at this place and on
this day." `Abdullah added, "These two prayers are shifted from their actual times -- the Maghrib
prayer (is offered) when the people reached Al-Muzdalifa and the Fajr (morning) prayer at the early
dawn." `Abdullah added, "I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) doing that."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 25, Hadith 155
The first to speak on Divine decree in al-Basrah was Ma`bad al Juhani. I and Humaid b. `Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari proceeded to perform Hajj or `Umrah. We said : would that we meet any of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) so that we could ask him about what they say with regard to divine decree. So Allah helped us to meet `Abd Allah b. `Umar who was entering the mosque. So I and my companion surrounded him, and I thought that my companion would entrust me the task of speaking to him. Then I said : Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, there appeared on our side some people who recite the Qur'an and are engaged in the hair-splitting of knowledge. They conceive that there is no Divine decree and everything happens freely without predestination. He said : When you meet those people, tell them that I am free from them, and they are free from me. By Him by Whom swears ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar, if one of them has gold equivalent to Uhud and he spends it, Allah will not accept it from him until he believes in Divine decree. He then said : ‘Umar b. Khattab transmitted to me a tradition, saying : One day when we were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) a man with very white clothing and very black hair came up to us. No mark of travel was visible on him, and we did not recognize him. Sitting down beside the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), leaning his knees against his and placing his hands on his thighs, he said : tell me, Muhammad, about Islam. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said : Islam means that you should testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle, that you should observe prayer, pay Zakat, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the house (i.e., Ka`bah), If you have the means to go. He said : You have spoken the truth. We were surprised at his questioning him and then declaring that he spoke the truth. He said : Now tell me about faith. He replied : It means that you should believe in Allah, his angels, his Books, his Apostles and the last day, and that you should believe in the decreeing both of good and evil. He said : You have spoken the truth. He said : now tell me about doing good (ihsan). He replied: It means that you should worship Allah as though you are seeing him; if you are not seeing him, he is seeing you. He said: Now tell me about the hour. He replied : The one who is asked about it is no better informed than the one who is asking. He said : Then tell me about its signs. He replied : That a maidservant should beget her mistress, and that you should see barefooted, naked, poor men and shepherds exalting themselves in buildings. ‘Umar said : He then went away, and I waited for three days, then he said : Do you know who the questioner was, `Umar? I replied : Allah and his Apostle know best. He said : He was Gabriel who came to you to teach you your religion.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 42, Hadith 100
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah at night, saying, "O Allah: All the
Praises are for You: You are the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth.
All the Praises are for You; You are the Maintainer of the Heaven and
the Earth and whatever is in them. All the Praises are for You; You
are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth. Your Word is the Truth,
and Your Promise is the Truth, and the Meeting with You is the Truth,
and Paradise is the Truth, and the (Hell) Fire is the Truth, and the
Hour is the Truth. O Allah! I surrender myself to You, and I believe
in You and I depend upon You, and I repent to You and with You (Your
evidences) I stand against my opponents, and to you I leave the
judgment (for those who refuse my message). O Allah! Forgive me my
sins that I did in the past or will do in the future, and also the
sins I did in secret or in public. You are my only God (Whom I
worship) and there is no other God for me (i.e. I worship none but
You)."
Narrated Sufyan:
(regarding the above narration) that the Prophet (ﷺ) added, "You are the
Truth, and Your Word is the Truth."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 97, Hadith 15
that `Umar bin Nafi` told him that Nafi`, Maula `Abdullah had heard `Umar saying, "I heard Allah's
Apostle forbidding Al-Qaza'." 'Ubaidullah added: I said, "What is Al-Qaza'?" 'Ubaidullah pointed
(towards his head) to show us and added, "Nafi` said, 'It is when a boy has his head shaved leaving a
tuft of hair here and a tuft of hair there." Ubaidullah pointed towards his forehead and the sides of his
head. 'Ubaidullah was asked, "Does this apply to both girls and boys?" He said, "I don't know, but
Nafi` said, 'The boy.'" 'Ubaidullah added, "I asked Nafi` again, and he said, 'As for leaving hair on
the temples and the back part of the boy's head, there is no harm, but Al-Qaza' is to leave a tuft of hair
on his forehead unshaved while there is no hair on the rest of his head, and also to leave hair on either
side of his head.'"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 77, Hadith 135
"Uwaimir came to 'Asim bin 'Adi and said: 'Ask the Messenger of Ailah (ﷺ) for me: "Do you think that if a man finds another man with his wife and kills him, he should be killed in retaliation, or what should he do?" 'Asim asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about that, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) disapproved of the question. Then 'Uwaimir met him ('Asim) and asked him about that, saying: 'What did you do?’ He said: I did that and you have not brought me any good. I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he disapproved of this question.’ Uwaimir said: 'By Allah, I will go to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) myself and ask him.' So he went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and found that Qur'an had been revealed concerning them, and the Prophet (ﷺ) told them to go through the procedure of Li'an. 'Uwaimir said: 'O Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ) by Allah if I take her back, I would have been telling lies about her.' So he left her before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told him to do so, and that became the Sunnah for two who engage in the procedure of Li'an. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Wait and see. If she gives birth to a child who is black in color with widely-spaced dark eyes and large buttocks, then I think that he was telling the truth about her, but if she gives birth to a child with a red complexion like a Wahrah, then I think that he was lying.' Then she gave birth to a child with features resembling those of the man concerning whom she was accused."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 10, Hadith 51
On the day of Hunain, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) showed preference (to some) people in the distribution of the spoils. He bestowed on Aqra' b. Habis one hundred camels, and bestowed an equal (number) upon 'Uyaina, and bestowed on people among the elites of Arabia, and preferred them (to others) on that day, in the distribution (of spoils). Upon this a person said: By Allah, neither justice has been done in this distribution (of spoils), nor has the pleasure of Allah been sought in it. I (the narrator ) said: By Allah, I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about it. I came to him and informed him about what he had said. The colour of his (the Prophet's) face changed red like blood and he then said: "Who would do justice, if Allah and His Messenger do not do justice?" He further said: "May Allah have mercy upon Moses; he was tormented more than this, but he showed patience." I said: Never would I convey him (the Holy Prophet) after this (unpleasant) narration.
Sahih Muslim Book 12, Hadith 184
"Abu Bakr went out to trade in Busra, one year before the Prophet (ﷺ) died, and with him were Nu`aiman and Suwaibit the sons of Harmalah, who had been present at Badr. Nu`aiman was in charge of the provisions, and Suwaibit was a man who joked a lot. He said to Nu`aiman: 'Feed me'. He said: 'Not until Abu Bakr comes'. He said: 'Then I will have to annoy you'. Then they passed by some people, and Suwaibit said to them: 'Will you buy a slave from me?' They said: 'Yes'. He said 'He is a slave who talks a lot and he will tell you, "I am a free man". If you are going to let him go when he says that to you, do not bother buying him.' They said: 'We will buy him from you.' So they bought him from him in return for ten young she-camels, then they brought him and tied a turban or a rope around his neck. Nu`aiman said: 'This man is making fun of you. I am a free man, not a slave.' They said: 'He has already told us about you; and they took him off.' Then Abu Bakr came and he (Suwaibit) told him about that. So he followed those people and returned their camels to them, and took Nu`aiman back. When they came to the Prophet (ﷺ) they told him what had happened, and the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions laughed about it for a year."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 33, Hadith 63
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nuaym ibn Abdullah al-
Mujmirthat Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Zayd told him that Abu Masud al
Ansari said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, came to us at the gathering of Sad ibn Ubada. Bashir ibn
Sad said to him, 'Allah has ordered us to ask for blessings on you,
Messenger of Allah. How should we do it?' The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained silent until we wished
we had not asked him. Then he told us to say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad
and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim, and give baraka to
Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You gave baraka to the family
of Ibrahim. In all the worlds You are worthy of Praise and Glorious,'
and then give the taslim as you have learnt."
Allahumma salli
ala Muhammad wa ali Muhammad kama sallaita Ibrahim, wa baraka ala
Muhammad wa ali Muhammad kama baraktaala ali Ibrahim. Fi'l alamin,
innaka Hamidu'm - Majid.
