The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Abu Talha, "Choose one of your boys to serve me." So Abu Talha took me (to
serve the Prophet (ﷺ) ) by giving me a ride behind him (on his camel). So I used to serve Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
whenever he stayed somewhere. I used to hear him saying, "O Allah! I seek refuge with you (Allah)
from (worries) care and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from
being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by other men." I kept on serving him till he
returned from (the battle of) Khaibar. He then brought Safiya, the daughter of Huyay whom he had
got (from the booty). I saw him making a kind of cushion with a cloak or a garment for her. He then
let her ride behind him. When we reached a place called As-Sahba', he prepared (a special meal
called) Hais, and asked me to invite the men who (came and) ate, and that was the marriage banquet
given on the consummation of his marriage to her. Then he proceeded till the mountain of Uhud
appeared, whereupon he said, "This mountain loves us and we love it." When he approached Medina,
he said, "O Allah! I make the land between its (i.e., Medina's) two mountains a sanctuary, as the
prophet Abraham made Mecca a sanctuary. O Allah! Bless them (the people of Medina) in their Mudd
and the Sa' (units of measuring).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 80, Hadith 60
Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said, "I vowed
to walk, but I was struck by a pain in the kidney, so I rode until I
came to Makka. I questioned Ata ibn Abi Rabah and others, and they
said, 'You must sacrifice an animal.' When I came to Madina I
questioned the ulama there, and they ordered me to walk again from the
place from which I was unable to go on. So I walked."
Yahya
said that he had heard Malik say, "What is done among us regarding
someone who makes a vow to walk to the House of Allah, and then cannot
do it and so rides, is that he must return and walk from the place
from which he was unable to go on. If he cannot walk, he should walk
what he can and then ride, and he must sacrifice a camel, a cow, or a
sheep if that is all that he can find."
Malik, when asked
about a man who said to another, "I will carry you to the House of
Allah", answered, "If he intended to carry him on his shoulder, by
that he meant hardship and exhaustion to himself, and he does not have
to do that. Let him walk by foot and make sacrifice. If he did not
intend anything, let him do hajj and ride, and take the man on hajj
with him. That is because he said, 'I will carry you to the house of
Allah.' If the man refuses to do hajj with him, then there is nothing
against him, and what is demanded of him is cancelled."
Yahya
said that Malik was asked whether it was enough for a man who had made
a vow that he would walk to the House of Allah a certain (large)
number of times, or who had forbidden himself from talking to his
father and brother, if he did not fulfil a certain vow, and he had
taken upon himself, by the oath, something which he was incapable of
fulfilling in his lifetime, even though he were to try every year, to
fulfil only one or a (smaller) number of vows by Allah? Malik said,
"The only satisfaction for that that I know is fulfilling what he has
obliged himself to do. Let him walk for as long as he is able and draw
near Allah the Exalted by what he can of good."
Muwatta Malik Book 22, Hadith 5
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), the true and truly inspired said, "(The matter of the Creation of) a human being is put
together in the womb of the mother in forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a
similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered
to write four things. He is ordered to write down his (i.e. the new creature's) deeds, his livelihood, his
(date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into
him. So, a man amongst you may do (good deeds till there is only a cubit between him and Paradise
and then what has been written for him decides his behavior and he starts doing (evil) deeds
characteristic of the people of the (Hell) Fire. And similarly a man amongst you may do (evil) deeds
till there is only a cubit between him and the (Hell) Fire, and then what has been written for him
decides his behavior, and he starts doing deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 59, Hadith 19
I asked 'A'isha about the Messenger of Allah's (ﷺ) voluntary prayers, and she replied: Before the noon prayer, he used to pray four rak'ahs in my house; then would go out and lead the people in prayer; then come in and pray two rak'ahs. He would then lead the people in the sunset prayer; then come in and pray two rak'ahs. Then he would lead the people in the 'Isha' prayer, and enter my house and pray two rak'ahs. He would pray nine rak'ahs during the night, including Witr. At night he would pray for a long time standing and for a long time sitting, and when he recited the Holy Qur'an while standing, he would bow and prostrate himself from the standing position, and when he recited while sitting, he would bow and prostrate himself from the sitting position, and when it was dawn he would pray two rak'ahs.
Sahih Muslim Book 6, Hadith 129
I went to `Aisha and said, "I was the slave of `Utba bin Abu Lahab. "Utba died and his sons became
my masters who sold me to Ibn Abu `Amr who manumitted me. The sons of `Utba stipulated that my
Wala' should be for them." `Aisha said, "Barirah came to me and she was given the writing of
emancipation by her masters and she asked me to buy and manumit her. I agreed to it, but Barirah told
me that her masters would not sell her unless her Wala' was for them." `Aisha said, "I am not in need
of that." When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard that, or he was told about it, he asked `Aisha about it. `Aisha
mentioned what Barirah had told her. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Buy and manumit (free) her and let them stipulate
whatever they like." So, `Aisha bought and manumitted her and her masters stipulated that her Wala'
should be for them." The Prophet;, said, "The Wala' will be for the liberator even if they stipulated a
hundred conditions."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 50, Hadith 6
Abu Qatadah said “We went out with the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) in the year of Hunain. And when the armies met, the Muslims suffered a reverse. I saw one of the polytheists prevailing over a Muslim, so I went round him till I came to him from behind and struck him with my sword at the vein between his neck and shoulder. He came towards me and closed with me, so that I felt death was near, but he was overtaken by death and let me go. I then caught upon on “Umar bin Al Khattab and said to him “What is the matter with the people?” He said “It is what Allaah has commanded. Then the people returned and the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ)sat down and said “If anyone kills a man and can prove it, he will get his spoil. I stood up and said “Who will testify for me? I then sat down.” He said again “If anyone kills a man and can prove it, he will get his spoil. I stood up and said “Who will testify for me? I then sat down.” He then said the same for the third time. I then stood up. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) said “What is the matter with you, Abu Qatadah? I told him the story. A man from the people said “He has spoken the truth, and I have this spoil with me, so make him agreeable (to take something in exchange). Abu Bakr said “In that case I swear by Allaah that he must not do so. One of the Allaah’s heroes does not fight for Allaah and his Apostle and then give you his spoil. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) said “He has spoken the truth, hand it over to him. Abu Qatadah said “he handed it over to me, I sold the coat of mail and brought a garden among Banu Salamh. This was the first property I acquired in the Islamic period.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 15, Hadith 241
""Some meat was brought to the Prophet (s.a.w) and a foreleg was presented to him, and he used to like it, so he bit from it. Then he said: 'I will be the 'Leader' of the people on the Day of Resurrection. Do you know why that is? Allah will gather the people, the first and the last, on one level ground where they will (all) be able to hear a caller, and all of them will be visible, and the sun will be brought near such that the people will suffer distress and trouble that they cannot tolerate nor bear. Then some people will say: "Don't you see the state you have reached? Why don't you look for a person who can intercede for you with your Lord? " Some of them will say to others: " You should go to Adam." So they will go to Adam and say, "You are the father of all mankind, Allah created you with His Own Hands, and breathed into you from His spirit (which He creted for you) and ordered the angels to prostrate for you. Will you not intercede for us with your Lord? Don't you see what has happened to us? Don't you see the state we have reached?" On that Adam will reply, "Today my Lord has become angry such that He has never before been angry, and will never be thereafter. He forbade me (to eat from) the tree, but I disobeyed(Him), Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to somebody else; Go to Nuh." They will go to Nuh and say: "O Nuh! You are the first among the Messengers to the people of the earth, and Allah named you a thankful slave. Will you not intercede for us with your Lord? Don't you see what has happened to us? Don't you see the state we have reached?" Nuh will say to them : "Today my Lord has become angry as He has never before been angry, and will never be thereafter. I had been given one supplication, and I supplicated against my own people. Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else! Go to Ibrahim." They will go to Ibrahim and say: "O Ibrahim! You are Allah's Prophet and His Khalil among the people of the earth, so intercede for us with your Lord, don't you see what hads happened to us?" He will say: "Today my Lord has become angry as He has never before been angry and will never be thereafter. Indeed I uttered three lies."- Abu Hayyyan (a narrator) mentioned them in his narration - " Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else! Go to Musa." So they will go to Musa and say: "O Musa! You are the Messenger of Allah who Allah distinguished above the people with His Message and His Speech, intercede for us with your Lord. Don't you see what has happened to us?" So he will say "Today my Lord has become angry as He has never before been angry and will never be thereafter. Indeed I killed a person whom I was ordered not to kill. Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else; Go to 'Eisa." They will go to 'Eisa and say: "O 'Eisa ! You are the Messenger of Allah and His Word which He placed into Mariam, and a Spirit from Him, and you spoke to the people in the cradle. Intercede for us with your Lord. Don't you see what has happened to us?" Then 'Eisa will say: "Today my Lord has become angry as He has never before been angry and will never be thereafter." He will not mention a sin, but will say: "Myself! Myself! Myself! Go to someone else! Go to Muhammad." He said: 'They will go to Muhammad(s.a.w) and they say: "O Muhammad! You are the Messenger of Allah and the last of the Prophets, and your past and future sins have been pardoned. Will you not intercede for us with your Lord, don't you see what has happened to us?" Then I will depart until I come to under the Throne to fall prostrating before my Lord. Then Allah will guide me to such praises and beautiful statements of glorification which He did not guide anyone to before me. Then He will say: "O Muhammad! Raise your head. Ask,so that you may be granted and intercede so that your intercession may be accepted." I will raise my head and say: "O Lord! My Ummah! O Lord! My Ummah! O Lord! My Ummah!" He will say: "O Muhammad! Let those of your Ummah who have no accounts enter the gate on the right among the gates of Paradise, and they shall share in the gates other than that with the people.'" Then he (s.a.w) said: 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! What is between every two gate-posts in Paradise is as what is between Makkah and Hajar, and what is between Makkah and Busra.'" Other chains report similar narrations.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 37, Hadith 20
from Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib who claimed that he was sitting in Al-Batha with a group, and the Messenger of Allah was sitting amongst them, when a cloud passed over them. They looked at it, and the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Di you know what its name it?’ They said: ‘Yes. This is As-Sahab (cloud).’ The Messenger of Allah saidl: ‘Al-Muzn (rain cloud)?’ They said: ‘Yes. This is As-Sahab (cloud).’ Then the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Do you know how much distance there is between the heavens and the earth?’ They said: ‘No, by Allah we do not know.’ He said: ‘The distance between every two of them is either seventy-one, or two, or three, years, and the heaven that is above that one is like that.’ Until he enumerated Seven heavens like that. Then he said: ‘Above the seventh heaven is a sea, Between its highest part and its lowest is just as there is between one heaven to another heaven. Then above their backs is the Throne. Between its lowest and highest parts is the same as what is between one heaven to another heaven, and Allah is above that.’”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 47, Hadith 372
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Amr ibn
Kathir ibn Aflah from Abu Muhammad, the mawla of Abu Qatada that Abu
Qatada ibn Ribi said, "We went out with the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the year of Hunayn. When the
armies met, the Muslims were put in disarray. I saw a man from the
idol worshippers who had got the better of one of the Muslims, so I
circled round and came up behind him, and struck him with a sword on
his shoulder-blade. He turned to me and grabbed me so hard that I felt
the smell of death in it. Then death overcame him, and he let go of
me."
He continued, "I met Umar ibn al-Khattab and said to
him, 'What's going on with the people?' He replied, 'The Command of
Allah.' Then the people took hold of the battle and the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Whoever has
killed one of the dead and can prove it, can strip him of his personal
effects.' I stood up and said, 'Who will testify for me?' and then I
sat down. The Messenger of Allah repeated, 'Whoever has killed one of
the dead and can prove it, can strip him of his personal effects.' I
stood up and said, 'Who will testify for me?' then I sat down. Then he
repeated his statement a third time, so I stood up, and the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'What's the
matter with you, Abu Qatada?' So I related my story to him. A man
said, 'He has spoken the truth, Messenger of Allah. I have the effects
of that slain person with me, so give him compensation for it,
Messenger of Allah.'
Abu Bakr said, 'No, by Allah! He did not
intend that one of the lions of Allah should fight for Allah and His
Messenger and then give you his spoils.' The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'He has spoken the truth,
hand it over to him.' He gave it to me, and I sold the breast-plate
and I bought a garden in the area of the Banu Salima with the money.
It was my first property, and I acquired it in Islam."
Muwatta Malik Book 21, Hadith 20
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Rafi ibn
Khadij married the daughter of Muhammad ibn Maslama al-Ansari. She was
with him until she grew older, and then he married a young girl and
preferred the young girl to her. She begged him to divorce her, so he
divorced her and then he gave her time until she had almost finished
her idda period and then he returned and still preferred the young
girl. She therefore asked him to divorce her. He divorced her once,
and then returned to her, and still preferred the young girl, and she
asked him to divorce her. He said, "What do you want? There is only
one divorce left. If you like, continue and put up with what you see
of preference, and if you like, I will separate from you." She said,
"I will continue in spite of the preference." He kept her in spite of
that. Rafi did not see that he had done any wrong action when she
remained with him in spite of preference.
Muwatta Malik Book 28, Hadith 61
By Allah except Whom none has the right to- be worshipped, (sometimes) I used to lay (sleep) on the
ground on my liver (abdomen) because of hunger, and (sometimes) I used to bind a stone over my
belly because of hunger. One day I sat by the way from where they (the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions)
used to come out. When Abu Bakr passed by, I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book and I
asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by and did not do so. Then `Umar
passed by me and I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book, and I asked him only that he might
satisfy my hunger, but he passed by without doing so. Finally Abu-l-Qasim (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) passed by
me and he smiled when he saw me, for he knew what was in my heart and on my face. He said, "O
Aba Hirr (Abu Huraira)!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said to me, "Follow me." He left
and I followed him.
Then he entered the house and I asked permission to enter and was admitted. He found milk in a bowl
and said, "From where is this milk?" They said, "It has been presented to you by such-and-such man
(or by such and such woman)." He said, "O Aba Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said,
"Go and call the people of Suffa to me." These people of Suffa were the guests of Islam who had no
families, nor money, nor anybody to depend upon, and whenever an object of charity was brought to
the Prophet, he would send it to them and would not take anything from it, and whenever any present
was given to him, he used to send some for them and take some of it for himself. The order of the
Prophet upset me, and I said to myself, "How will this little milk be enough for the people of As-
Suffa? though I was more entitled to drink from that milk in order to strengthen myself", but behold!
The Prophet (ﷺ) came to order me to give that milk to them. I wondered what will remain of that milk for
me, but anyway, I could not but obey Allah and His Apostle so I went to the people of As-Suffa and
called them, and they came and asked the Prophet's permission to enter. They were admitted and took
their seats in the house.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Aba-Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "Take it and give it to
them." So I took the bowl (of milk) and started giving it to one man who would drink his fill and
return it to me, whereupon I would give it to another man who, in his turn, would drink his fill and
return it to me, and I would then offer it to another man who would drink his fill and return it to me.
Finally, after the whole group had drunk their fill, I reached the Prophet (ﷺ) who took the bowl and put it
on his hand, looked at me and smiled and said. "O Aba Hirr!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!"
He said, "There remain you and I." I said, "You have said the truth, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "Sit
down and drink." I sat down and drank. He said, "Drink," and I drank. He kept on telling me
repeatedly to drink, till I said, "No. by Allah Who sent you with the Truth, I have no space for it (in
my stomach)." He said, "Hand it over to me." When I gave him the bowl, he praised Allah and
pronounced Allah's Name on it and drank the remaining milk.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 81, Hadith 41
While I was a youngster, I asked `Aisha the wife of the Prophet. "What about the meaning of the
Statement of Allah;
"Verily! (the mountains) As-Safa and Al Marwa, are among the symbols of Allah. So, it is not
harmful if those who perform Hajj or `Umra of the House (Ka`ba at Mecca) to perform the going
(Tawaf) between them? (2.158) I understand (from that) that there is no harm if somebody does not
perform the Tawaf between them." `Aisha replied, "No, for if it were as you are saying, then the
recitation would have been like this: 'It is not harmful not to perform Tawaf between them.' This verse
was revealed in connection with the Ansar who used to assume the Ihram for the idol Manat which
was put beside a place called Qudaid and those people thought it not right to perform the Tawaf of As-
Safa and Al-Marwa. When Islam came, they asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about that, and Allah revealed:--
"Verily! (the mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwa Are among the symbols of Allah. So, it is not
harmful of those who perform Hajj or `Umra of the House (Ka`ba at Mecca) to perform the going
(Tawaf) between them." (2.158) Sufyan and Abu Muawiya added from Hisham (from `Aisha): "The
Hajj or `Umra of the person who does not perform the going (Tawaf) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa
is incomplete in Allah's sight.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 26, Hadith 17
I got a she-camel in my share of the war booty on the day (of the battle) of Badr, and the Prophet (ﷺ) had
given me a she-camel from the Khumus. When I intended to marry Fatima, the daughter of Allah's
Apostle, I had an appointment with a goldsmith from the tribe of Bani Qainuqa' to go with me to bring
Idhkhir (i.e. grass of pleasant smell) and sell it to the goldsmiths and spend its price on my wedding
party. I was collecting for my she-camels equipment of saddles, sacks and ropes while my two shecamels
were kneeling down beside the room of an Ansari man. I returned after collecting whatever I
collected, to see the humps of my two she-camels cut off and their flanks cut open and some portion
of their livers was taken out. When I saw that state of my two she-camels, I could not help weeping. I
asked, "Who has done this?" The people replied, "Hamza bin `Abdul Muttalib who is staying with
some Ansari drunks in this house." I went away till I reached the Prophet (ﷺ) and Zaid bin Haritha was
with him. The Prophet (ﷺ) noticed on my face the effect of what I had suffered, so the Prophet (ﷺ) asked.
"What is wrong with you." I replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have never seen such a day as today.
Hamza attacked my two she-camels, cut off their humps, and ripped open their flanks, and he is sitting
there in a house in the company of some drunks." The Prophet (ﷺ) then asked for his covering sheet, put it
on, and set out walking followed by me and Zaid bin Haritha till he came to the house where Hamza
was. He asked permission to enter, and they allowed him, and they were drunk. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) started
rebuking Hamza for what he had done, but Hamza was drunk and his eyes were red. Hamza looked at
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and then he raised his eyes, looking at his knees, then he raised up his eyes looking at
his umbilicus, and again he raised up his eyes look in at his face. Hamza then said, "Aren't you but the
slaves of my father?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) realized that he was drunk, so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) retreated, and we
went out with him.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 57, Hadith 1
While we were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his
camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?"
At that time the Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied,
"This white man reclining on his arm." The man then addressed him, "O Son of `Abdul Muttalib."
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I am here to answer your questions." The man said to the Prophet, "I want to ask
you something and will be hard in questioning. So do not get angry." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Ask whatever
you want." The man said, "I ask you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who were before you, has
Allah sent you as an Apostle to all the mankind?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "By Allah, yes." The man
further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to offer five prayers in a day and night (24
hours).? He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah! Has Allah ordered
you to observe fasts during this month of the year (i.e. Ramadan)?" He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The
man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to take Zakat (obligatory charity) from
our rich people and distribute it amongst our poor people?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "By Allah, yes."
Thereupon that man said, "I have believed in all that with which you have been sent, and I have been
sent by my people as a messenger, and I am Dimam bin Tha`laba from the brothers of Bani Sa`d bin
Bakr."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 3, Hadith 5
