I proceeded till I entered upon `Umar (and while I was sitting there), his gate-keeper Yarfa came to
him and said, " `Uthman, `Abdur-Rahman, Az-Zubair and Sa`d ask your permission to come in."
`Umar allowed them. So they entered, greeted, and sat down. (After a while the gatekeeper came) and
said, "Shall I admit `Ali and `Abbas?'' `Umar allowed them to enter. Al-`Abbas said "O Chief of the
believers! Judge between me and the oppressor (`Ali)." Then there was a dispute (regarding the
property of Bani Nadir) between them (`Abbas and `Ali). `Uthman and his companions said, "O Chief
of the Believers! Judge between them and relieve one from the other." `Umar said, "Be patient!
beseech you by Allah, with Whose permission the Heaven and the Earth Exist! Do you know that
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'Our property is not to be inherited, and whatever we leave is to be given in
charity,' and by this Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) meant himself?" On that the group said, "He verily said so."
`Umar then faced `Ali and `Abbas and said, "I beseech you both by Allah, do you both know that
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said so?" They both replied, "Yes". `Umar then said, "Now I am talking to you about
this matter (in detail) . Allah favored Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) with some of this wealth which He did not give
to anybody else, as Allah said: 'What Allah bestowed as Fai (Booty on His Apostle for which you
made no expedition... ' (59.6)
So that property was totally meant for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), yet he did not collect it and ignore you, nor did
he withhold it with your exclusion, but he gave it to you and distributed it among you till this much of
it was left behind, and the Prophet, used to spend of this as the yearly expenditures of his family and
then take what remained of it and spent it as he did with (other) Allah's wealth. The Prophet (ﷺ) did so
during all his lifetime, and I beseech you by Allah, do you know that?" They replied, "Yes." `Umar
then addressed `Ali and `Abbas, saying, "I beseech you both by Allah, do you know that?" Both of
them replied, "Yes." `Umar added, "Then Allah took His Apostle unto Him. Abu Bakr then said 'I am
the successor of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)' and took over all the Prophet's property and disposed of it in the
same way as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to do, and you were present then." Then he turned to `Ali and
`Abbas and said, "You both claim that Abu Bakr did so-and-so in managing the property, but Allah
knows that Abu Bakr was honest, righteous, intelligent, and a follower of what is right in managing it.
Then Allah took Abu Bakr unto Him, 'I said: I am the successor of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr.' So
I took over the property for two years and managed it in the same way as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and Abu
Bakr used to do. Then you both (`Ali and `Abbas) came to me and asked for the same thing! (O
`Abbas! You came to me to ask me for your share from nephew's property; and this (`Ali) came to me
asking for his wives share from her father's property, and I said to you both, 'If you wish, I will place
it in your custody on condition that you both will manage it in the same way as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and
Abu Bakr did and as I have been doing since I took charge of managing it; otherwise, do not speak to
me anymore about it.'
Then you both said, 'Give it to us on that (condition).' So I gave it to you on that condition. Now I
beseech you by Allah, did I not give it to them on that condition?" The group (whom he had been
addressing) replied, "Yes." `Umar then addressed `Abbas and `Ali saying, "I beseech you both by
Allah, didn't I give you all that property on that condition?" They said, "Yes." `Umar then said, "Are
you now seeking a verdict from me other than that? By Him with Whose Permission the Heaven and
the Earth exists I will not give any verdict other than that till the Hour is established; and if you both
are unable to manage this property, then you can hand it back to me, and I will be sufficient for it on
your behalf." (See, Hadith No. 326, Vol. 4)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 96, Hadith 36
Mu’awiyah came out to the Masjid and said: “What has caused you to gather for this sitting.” They said: “We gathered so that we may remember Allah.” He said, “By Allah, nothing caused you to gather for this sitting except for that?” They said, “By Allah, nothing caused us to gather for this sitting except for that.” He said: “Indeed, I did not ask you out of suspicion, and there was no one in the position I was from the Messenger of Allah who narrates less Ahadith from him than me. Indeed the Messenger of Allah came out upon a circle of his Companions and said: ‘what has caused you to gather for this sitting?’ They said: ‘We have gathered for this sitting to remember Allah, and praise Him for His having guided us to Islam, and having bestowed blessings upon us.’ So he said: ‘By Allah, nothing caused you to gather for this sitting except for that?’ He said: ‘Indeed, I did not ask you out of suspicion, verily Jibra’il came to me and informed me that Allah boasts of you to the angels.’”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 10
"Whoever would like to meet Allah tomorrow as a Muslim, let him regularly attend these five (daily) prayers whenever the call for them is given (that in the mosques), for Allah prescribed for
His Prophet the ways of guidance, and they (the prayers) are part of those ways of guidance. I do not think that there is anyone among you who does not have a place where he prays in his house. But if you were to pray in your houses and forsake the Masjids, you would be forsaking the Sunnah of your Prophet, and if you were to forsake the Sunnah of your
Prophet you would go astray. There is no Muslim slave who performs Wudu and does it well, then walks to the prayer, but Allah will record one Hasanah (good
deed) for each step he takes, or raise' him one level by it or erase one sin from him. I remember how we used to take short steps, and I remember (a time) when no one stayed behind from the prayer except
a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was well known. And I have seen a man coming Supported by two others until he would be made to stand in the row."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 10, Hadith 73
the Prophet (saas) used to say in his supplication: "Rabbi! A'inni wa la tu'in 'alayya, wansurni wa la tansur 'alayya, wamkurli wa la tamkur 'alayya, wahdini wa yassiril-huda li, wansurni 'ala man bagha 'alayya. Rabbij'alni laka shakkaran laka dhakkaran, laka rahhaban, laka muti'an, 'ilayka mukhbitan, 'ilayka awwahan muniba. Rabbi! Taqabbal tawbati, waghsil hawbati wa ajib da'wati, wahdi qalbi, wa saddid lisani, wa thabbit hujjati, waslul sakhimata qalbi (O Lord! Help me and do not help others against me, support me and do not support others against me, plan for me and do not plan against me, guide me and make guidance easy for me, and help me against those who wrong me. O Lord! Make me grateful to You, make me remember You much, make me fearful of You, obedient to You, humble before You and turning to You. O Lord! Accept my repentance and wash away my sins, answer my supplication, guide my heart, make my tongue speak the truth, make my proof firm and remove resentment from my heard)." (Sahih)(One of the narrators) Abul-Hasan At-Tanafisi said: "I said to Waki': 'Shall I say it in the Qunut of Witr?' He said: 'Yes.'"
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 34, Hadith 4
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "While three persons were traveling, they were overtaken by rain and they took
shelter in a cave in a mountain. A big rock fell from the mountain over the mouth of the cave and
blocked it. They said to each other. 'Think of such good (righteous) deeds which, you did for Allah's
sake only, and invoke Allah by giving reference to those deeds so that Allah may relieve you from
your difficulty. one of them said, 'O Allah! I had my parents who were very old and I had small
children for whose sake I used to work as a shepherd. When I returned to them at night and milked
(the sheep), I used to start giving the milk to my parents first before giving to my children. And one
day I went far away in search of a grazing place (for my sheep), and didn't return home till late at
night and found that my parents had slept. I milked (my livestock) as usual and brought the milk
vessel and stood at their heads, and I disliked to wake them up from their sleep, and I also disliked to
give the milk to my children before my parents though my children were crying (from hunger) at my
feet.
So this state of mine and theirs continued till the day dawned. (O Allah!) If you considered that I had
done that only for seeking Your pleasure, then please let there be an opening through which we can
see the sky.' So Allah made for them an opening through which they could see the sky. Then the
second person said, 'O Allah! I had a she-cousin whom I loved as much as a passionate man love a
woman. I tried to seduce her but she refused till I paid her one-hundred Dinars So I worked hard till I
collected one hundred Dinars and went to her with that But when I sat in between her legs (to have
sexual intercourse with her), she said, 'O Allah's slave! Be afraid of Allah ! Do not deflower me
except legally (by marriage contract). So I left her O Allah! If you considered that I had done that only
for seeking Your pleasure then please let the rock move a little to have a (wider) opening.'
So Allah shifted that rock to make the opening wider for them. And the last (third) person said 'O
Allah ! I employed a laborer for wages equal to a Faraq (a certain measure: of rice, and when he had
finished his job he demanded his wages, but when I presented his due to him, he gave it up and
refused to take it. Then I kept on sowing that rice for him (several times) till managed to buy with the
price of the yield, some cows and their shepherd Later on the laborer came to me an said. '(O Allah's
slave!) Be afraid o Allah, and do not be unjust to me an give me my due.' I said (to him). 'Go and take
those cows and their shepherd. So he took them and went away. (So, O Allah!) If You considered that
I had done that for seeking Your pleasure, then please remove the remaining part of the rock.' And so
Allah released them (from their difficulty).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 5
"Ibn 'Umar and I went to Abu Sa'eed and he narrated to us: 'the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said - and I heard him with these ears: "Do not sell gold for gold except kind for kind, nor sliver for silver except kind for kind, do not exchange more of one than the other, and do not sell what is not present from them for what is present."
There are narrations on this topic from Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, Abu Hurairah, Hisham bin 'Amir, Al-Bara', Zaid bin Arqam, Fadalah bin 'Ubaid, Abu Bakrah, Ibn 'Umar, Abu Ad-Darda', and Bilal.
is a Hasan Sahih Hadith.
This is acted upon according to the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and others, except for what has been related from Ibn 'Abbas; he did not see any harm in exchanging gold for gold or silver for silver, more for less, when it is done hand in hand, and he said: "Riba' is only in credit." Similar it has been related from some of his companions. It has been related that Ibn 'Abbas changed his opinion when Abu Sa'eed narrated it to him from the Prophet (ﷺ). The first view is more correct.
And this is acted upon according to the people of knowledge . It is the view of Sufyan Ath-Thawri, Ibn Al-Mubarak, Ash-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. It has been reported that Ibn Al-Mubarak said: "There is no difference over exchange."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 14, Hadith 41
(who was an ally of Bam `Amr bin Lu'ai and one of those who had taken part in (the Ghazwa of)
Badr): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarreh to Bahrain to collect the Jizya. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
had established peace with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al-`Ala' bin Al-Hadrami as their
governor. When Abu 'Ubaida came from Bahrain with the money, the Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's
arrival which coincided with the time of the morning prayer with the Prophet. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
led them in the morning prayer and finished, the Ansar approached him, and he looked at them and
smiled on seeing them and said, "I feel that you have heard that Abu. 'Ubaida has brought
something?" They said, "Yes, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)' He said, "Rejoice and hope for what will please you!
By Allah, I am not afraid of your poverty but I am afraid that you will lead a life of luxury as past
nations did, whereupon you will compete with each other for it, as they competed for it, and it will
destroy you as it destroyed them."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 58, Hadith 2
(the wife of the Prophet) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah in the prayer saying "Allahumma inni
a`udhu bika min `adhabi l-qabr, wa a`udhu bika min fitnati l-masihi d-dajjal, wa a`udhu bika min
fitnati l-mahya wa fitnati l-mamat. Allahumma inni a`udhu bika mina l-ma'thami wa l-maghram. (O
Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, from the afflictions of the imposter-
Messiah, and from the afflictions of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from sins and
from debt)." Somebody said to him, "Why do you so frequently seek refuge with Allah from being in
debt?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and breaks promises
whenever he makes (them)." `Aisha also narrated: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in his prayer seeking refuge
with Allah from the afflictions of Ad-Dajjal.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 10, Hadith 226
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out in the year of al-Hudaibbiyyah with over ten hundreds of Companions and when he came to Dhu al Hulaifah. He garlanded and marked the sacrificial animals, and entered the sacred state of Umrah. He then went on with the tradition. The Prophet moved on and when he came to the mountain, pass by which one descends (to Mecca) to them, his riding-beast knelt down, and the people said twice: Go on, go on, al-Qaswa has become jaded. The Prophet (May peace be upon him) said: She has not become jaded and that is not a characteristic of hers, but He Who restrained the elephant has restrained her. He then said: By Him in Whose hand my soul is, they will not ask any me good thing by which they honor which God has made sacred without my giving them it. He then urged her and she leaped up and he turned aside from them, and stopped at the farthest side of al-Hudaibiyyah at a pool with little water. Meanwhile Budail bin Warqa al-Khuza’I came, and ‘Urwah bin Mas’ud joined him. He began to speak to the Prophet (ﷺ). Whenever he spoke to the Prophet (ﷺ), he caught his beard. Al Mughriah bin Shu’bah was standing beside the Prophet (ﷺ).He had a sword with him, wearing a helmet. He (Al Mughriah) struck his (‘Urwah’s) hand with the lower end of his sheath, and said: Keep away your hand from his beard. ‘Urwah then raised his hand and asked: Who is this? They replied: Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah. He said: O treacherous one! Did I not use my offices in your treachery? In pre-Islamic days Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah accompanied some people and murdered them, and took their property. He then came (to the Prophet) and embraced Islam. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: As for Islam we accepted it, but as to the property, as it has been taken by treachery, we have no need of it. He went on with the tradition the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Write down: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has decided. He then narrated the tradition. Suhail then said: And that a man will not come to you from us, even if he follows your religion, without you sending him back to us. When he finished drawing up the document, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his Companions: Get up and sacrifice and then shave. Thereafter some believing women who were immigrants came. (Allah sent down: O yea who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants). Allah most high forbade them to send them back, but ordered them to restore the dower. He then returned to Medina. Abu Basir a man from the Quraish (who was a Muslim), came to him. And they sent (two men) to look for him; so he handed him over to the two men. They took him away, and when they reached Dhu Al Hulaifah and alighted to eat some dates which they had, Abu Basir said to one of the men : I swear by Allah so-and-so, that I think this sword of yours is a fine one; the other drew the sword and said : Yes I have tried it. Abu Basir said: Let me look at it. He let him have it and he struck him till he died, whereupon the other fled and came to Medina, and running entered the mosque. The Prophet ( may peace be upon him) said: This man has seen something frightful. He said: I swear by Allah that my Companion has been killed, and im as good as dead. Abu Basir then arrived and said: Allah has fulfilled your covenant. You returned me to them, but Allah saved me from them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Woe to his mother, stirrer up of war! Would that he had someone (i.e. some kinsfolk). When he heard that he knew that he would send him back to them, so he went out and came to the seashore. Abu Jandal escaped and joined Abu Basir till a band of them collected.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 15, Hadith 289
Abu Talha had the largest number of datepalms from amongst the Ansars of Medina. The dearest of
his property to him was Bairuha garden which was facing the (Prophet's) Mosque. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
used to enter it and drink of its good fresh water. When the Holy Verse:-- 'By no means shall you
attain righteousness unless you spend (in charity) of that which you love.' (3.92) was revealed, Abu
Talha got up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Allah says: By no means shall you attain righteousness
unless you spend of that which you love,' and the dearest of my property to me is the Bairuha garden
and I want to give it in charity in Allah's Cause, seeking to be rewarded by Allah for that. So you can
spend it, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), where-ever Allah instructs you. ' Allah s Apostle said, "Good! That is a
perishable (or profitable) wealth" (`Abdullah is in doubt as to which word was used.) He said, "I have
heard what you have said but in my opinion you'd better give it to your kith and kin." On that Abu
Talha said, "I will do so, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" Abu Talha distributed that garden among his kith and kin
and cousins.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 74, Hadith 37
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Sulayman
ibn Yasar that Abdullah ibn Abbas and Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn
Awf differed on the question of a wornan who gave birth a few nights
after the death of her husband. Abu Salama said, "When she gives birth
to the child she is carrying, she is free to marry." Ibn Abbas said,
"At the end of two periods." Abu Hurayra came and said, "I am with my
nephew", meaning Abu Salama. They sent Kurayb, a mawla of Abdullah ibn
Abbas to Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, to ask her about it. He came back and told them that
she had said that Subaya al-Aslamiya had given birth a few nights
after the death of her husband, and she had brought the matter to the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he
had said, "You are free to marry, so marry whomever you wish."
Malik said, "This is how the people of knowledge here continue to
act."
29.31 Widows Remaining in Their Houses until Free to
Marry
Muwatta Malik Book 29, Hadith 95
“The earth was
brought together for me so that I could see the east and the west,
and
I was given two treasures, the yellow (or the red) and the white
–
meaning gold and silver. And it was said to me: ‘Your dominion
will
extend as far as has been shown to you.’ I asked Allah for
three
things: That my nation would not be overwhelmed by famine that
would
destroy them all, and that they would not be rent by schism and
fight
one another, but it was said to me: ‘When I (Allah) issue My
decree it
cannot be revoked. But I will never cause your nation to be
overwhelmed by famine that would destroy them all, and I will not
gather their enemies against them (and destroy them) until they
annihilate one another and kill one another.’ Once they start to
fight
amongst themselves, that will continue until the Day of
Resurrection.
What I fear most for my nation is misguiding leaders.
Some tribes
among my nation will worship idols and some tribes among
my nation
will join the idolaters. Before the Hour comes there will
be nearly
thirty Dajjals (great liars), each of them claiming to be a
Prophet.
But a group among my nation will continue to adhere to the
truth and
be victorious, and those who oppose them will not harm
them, until the
command of Allah comes to pass.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 27
(When) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (wished to invoke curse or blessing on someone, he would do so at the end) of the recitation in the dawn prayer, when he had pronounced Allah-o-Akbar (for bending) and then lifted his head (saying):" Allah listened to him who praised Him; our Lord! to Thee is all praise" ; he would then stand up and say:" Rescue al-Walid b. Walid, Salama b. Hisham, and 'Ayyash b. Abd Rabi'a, and the helpless among the Muslims. O Allah! trample severely Mudar and cause them a famine (which broke out at the time) of Joseph. O Allah! curse Lihyan, Ri'l, Dhakwan, 'Usayya, for they disobeyed Allah and His Messenger." (The narrator then adds): The news reached us that he abandoned (this) when this verse was revealed:" Thou but no concern in the matter whether He turns to them (mercifully) or chastises them; surely they are wrongdoers" (ill. 127)
