"Horses may bring reward to a man, or they may be a means of protection, or they may be a burden (of sin). As for that which brings reward, it is a man who keeps it for the cause of Allah and ties it with a long rope in a pasture or a garden; whatever it eats or drinks in that pasture or garden will count as good deeds for him. If it breaks its rope and jumps over one or two hills, its footsteps" -and according to the Hadith of Al-Harith, "its dung will count as good deeds for him. If it passes by a river and drinks from it, even though (its owner) did not intend to give it water from that river, that will also bring him reward. If a man keeps a horse in order to earn an independent living and avoid asking others for help, and he does not forget his duty toward Allah with regard to their (the horses') necks and backs, then they will be a means of protection for him. If a man keeps horses out of pride, to show off before others and to fight the Muslims, then that will be a burden (of sin) for him." The Prophet was asked about donkeys and he said: "Nothing has been revealed to me concerning them except this Verse which is comprehensive in meaning: 'So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) shall see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) shall see it.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 28, Hadith 3
An Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (ﷺ) that the Ansar drew lots
concerning the dwelling of the Emigrants. `Uthman bin Maz'un was decided to dwell with them (i.e.
Um Al-`Ala's family), `Uthman fell ill and I nursed him till he died, and we covered him with his
clothes. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and I (addressing the dead body) said, "O Abu As-Sa'ib, may
Allah's Mercy be on you! I bear witness that Allah has honored you." On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "How
do you know that Allah has honored him?" I replied, "I do not know. May my father and my mother
be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! But who else is worthy of it (if not `Uthman)?" He said, "As
to him, by Allah, death has overtaken him, and I hope the best for him. By Allah, though I am the
Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me," By Allah, I will never assert the piety
of anyone after him. That made me sad, and when I slept I saw in a dream a flowing stream for
`Uthman bin Maz'un. I went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and told him of it. He remarked, "That symbolizes his
(good) deeds."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 63, Hadith 154
"There are three whom Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, loves, and three whom Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, hates. As for those whom Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, loves: A man who comes to some people and asks (to be given something) for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and not for the sake of their relationship, but they do not give him. So one man stayed behind and gave to him in secret, and no one knew of his giving except Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and the one to whom he gave it. People who travel all night until sleep becomes dearer to them than anything that may be equivalent to it, so they lay down their heads (and slept). Then a man among them got up and started praying to Me and beseeching Me, reciting MY Ayat. And a man who was on a campaign and met the enemy and they fled, but he went forward (pursuing them) until he was killed or Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, granted victory to him. And three whom Allah hates are the old man who commits Zina, the poor man who shows off, and the rich man who is unjust."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 23, Hadith 136
Malik related to me from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from
Yahya ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hatib that some slaves of Hatib stole a
she-camel belonging to a man from the Muzayna tribe and they
slaughtered it. The case was brought before Umar ibn al-Khattab, and
Umar ordered Kathir ibn as-Salt to cut off their hands. Then Umar said
to Habib, "I think you must be starving them," and he added, "By
Allah! I will make you pay such a fine that it will be heavy for you."
He enquired of the man from the Muzayna tribe, "What was the price of
your camel?" The Muzayni said, "By Allah, I refused to sell her for
400 dirhams.'' Umar said, ''Give him 800 dirhams."
Yahya said
that he heard Malik say, "Doubling the price is not the behaviour of
our community. What people have settled on among us is that the man is
obliged to pay the value of the camel or animal on the day he took
it."
Muwatta Malik Book 36, Hadith 49
"When we prayed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), we used to say: "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Do not say "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah, for Allah is As-Salam." Rather say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 12, Hadith 140
"Before the tashahhud was enjoined, when we prayed we used to say: 'Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), pace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Do not say this, for indeed Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, is As-Salam. Rather say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi wasalawatu wat-tayibaat, as-salamu 'alaika ayah-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina a 'ala ibad illahis-salihin, ashadu an la ilaha ill Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu. (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.)"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 13, Hadith 99
I was ten years old when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) arrived at Medina. My mother and aunts used to urge me to
serve the Prophet (ﷺ) regularly, and I served him for ten years. When the Prophet (ﷺ) died I was twenty years
old, and I knew about the order of Al-Hijab (veiling of ladies) more than any other person when it was
revealed. It was revealed for the first time when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had consummated his marriage with
Zainab bint Jahsh. When the day dawned, the Prophet (ﷺ) was a bridegroom and he invited the people to a
banquet, so they came, ate, and then all left except a few who remained with the Prophet (ﷺ) for a long
time. The Prophet (ﷺ) got up and went out, and I too went out with him so that those people might leave
too. The Prophet (ﷺ) proceeded and so did I, till he came to the threshold of `Aisha's dwelling place. Then
thinking that these people have left by then, he returned and so did I along with him till he entered
upon Zainab and behold, they were still sitting and had not gone. So the Prophet (ﷺ) again went away and
I went away along with him. When we reached the threshold of `Aisha's dwelling place, he thought
that they had left, and so he returned and I too, returned along with him and found those people had
left. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) drew a curtain between me and him, and the Verses of Al-Hijab were revealed.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 101
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If you let loose your hound after a game and mention Allah's Name on sending it,
and the hound catches the game and kills it, then you can eat of it. But if the hound eats of it, then you
should not eat thereof, for the hound has caught it for itself. And if along with your hound, joined other
hounds, and Allah's Name was not mentioned at the time of their sending, and they catch an animal
and kill it, you should not eat of it, for you will not know which of them has killed it. And if you have
thrown an arrow at the game and then find it (dead) two or three days later and, it bears no mark other
than the wound inflicted by your arrow, then you can eat of it. But if the game is found (dead) in
water, then do not eat of it."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 72, Hadith 10
My father died and was in debt. I suggested that his creditors take the fruits (i.e. dates) of my garden
in lieu of the debt of my father, but they refused the offer, as they thought that it would not cover the
full debt. So, I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him about it. He said (to me), "When you pluck the dates
and collect them in the Mirbad (i.e. a place where dates are dried), call me (Allah's Messenger (ﷺ))." Finally
he came accompanied by Abu Bakr and `Umar and sat on the dates and invoked Allah to bless them.
Then he said, "Call your creditors and give them their full rights." So, I paid all my father's creditors
in full and yet thirteen extra Wasqs of dates remained, seven of which were 'Ajwa and six were Laun
or six of which were Ajwa and seven were Laun. I met Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at sunset and informed him
about it. On that he smiled and said, "Go to Abu Bakr and `Umar and tell them about it." They said,
"We perceived that was going to happen, as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did what he did."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 53, Hadith 19
Al-`Aqib and Saiyid, the rulers of Najran, came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) with the intention of doing Lian
one of them said to the other, "Do not do (this Lian) for, by Allah, if he is a Prophet and we do this
Lian, neither we, nor our offspring after us will be successful." Then both of them said (to the Prophet (ﷺ)
), "We will give what you should ask but you should send a trustworthy man with us, and do not send
any person with us but an honest one." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I will send an honest man who Is really
trustworthy." Then every one of the companions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) wished to be that one. Then the
Prophet said, "Get up, O Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah." When he got up, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "This is
the Trustworthy man of this (Muslim) nation."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 403
That he stayed overnight in the house of Maimuna the wife of the Prophet, his aunt. He added : I lay
on the bed (cushion transversally) while Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and his wife lay in the lengthwise direction of
the cushion. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) slept till the middle of the night, either a bit before or a bit after it and
then woke up, rubbing the traces of sleep off his face with his hands. He then, recited the last ten
verses of Sura Al-`Imran, got up and went to a hanging water-skin. He then Performed the ablution
from it and it was a perfect ablution, and then stood up to offer the prayer. I, too, got up and did as the
Prophet had done. Then I went and stood by his side. He placed his right hand on my head and caught
my right ear and twisted it. He prayed two rak`at then two rak`at and two rak`at and then two rak`at
and then two rak`at and then two rak`at (separately six times), and finally one rak`a (the witr). Then he
lay down again in the bed till the Mu'adh-dhin came to him where upon the Prophet (ﷺ) got up, offered a
two light rak`at prayer and went out and led the Fajr prayer.
