When Az-Zubair married me, he had no real property or any slave or anything else except a camel
which drew water from the well, and his horse. I used to feed his horse with fodder and drew water
and sew the bucket for drawing it, and prepare the dough, but I did not know how to bake bread. So
our Ansari neighbors used to bake bread for me, and they were honorable ladies. I used to carry the
date stones on my head from Zubair's land given to him by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and this land was two third
Farsakh (about two miles) from my house. One day, while I was coming with the date stones on my
head, I met Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) along with some Ansari people. He called me and then, (directing his
camel to kneel down) said, "Ikh! Ikh!" so as to make me ride behind him (on his camel). I felt shy to
travel with the men and remembered Az-Zubair and his sense of Ghira, as he was one of those people
who had the greatest sense of Ghira. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) noticed that I felt shy, so he proceeded. I came to
Az-Zubair and said, "I met Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) while I was carrying a load of date stones on my head, and
he had some companions with him. He made his camel kneel down so that I might ride, but I felt shy
in his presence and remembered your sense of Ghira (See the glossary). On that Az-Zubair said, "By
Allah, your carrying the date stones (and you being seen by the Prophet (ﷺ) in such a state) is more
shameful to me than your riding with him." (I continued serving in this way) till Abu Bakr sent me a
servant to look after the horse, whereupon I felt as if he had set me free.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 157
Allah's Messnger (ﷺ) had alighted in his house (viz. of Abu Ayyub Ansari at the time of his emigration to Medina) and he occupied the lower storey, whereas Abu Ayyub Ansari lived in the upper storey. One night, Abu Ayyub Ansari got up and said (to himself): (How unfortunate it is) that we walk above the head of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), so they went aside and spent the night in a nook and then told Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) about it whereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: The lower storey is more comfortable (for me). but he (Abu Ayyub Ansari) said: We (would not live) over the roof under which you live. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) shifted to the upper storey, whereas Abu Ayyub Ansari shifted to the lower storey; and he (Abu Ayyub Ansari) used to prepare food for Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) ; and when it was brought (back) to him he asked (to locate) the part, where his fingers had touched (the food), and he followed his fingers on that part where his fingers (those of the Holy Prophet) had touched it. (One day) he prepared food which contained garlic, and when it was returned to him he asked (to locate) the part which the fingers of Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) had touched. It was said to him that he had not eaten (the food). He (Abd Ayyub Ansari) was distressed and went up to him (to the Holy Prophet) and said: Is it forbidden? But Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: No, (it is not forbidden), but I do not like it. and he (Abu Ayyub Ansari) said: I also do not like what you do not like or which you did not like. He (Abu Ayyub Ansari) said: (The Prophet did not eat garlic) as Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) was visited (by angels) and brought him the message of Allah.
Sahih Muslim Book 36, Hadith 232
“You
have kinship and rights, and I see you entering upon these rulers and
speaking to them as Allah wills you should speak. But i heard Bilal
bin Harith Al-Muzani, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ),
say that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘One of you may speak a
word that pleases Allah, and not know how far it reaches, but Allah
will record for him as pleasure, until the Day of Resurrection due to
that word. And one of you may speak a word that angers Allah, and not
know how far it reaches, but Allah will record against him his anger,
until the Day he meets Him due to that word.”
'Alqamah said: "So look, woe to you, at what you say and what you speak about, for there is something that I wanted to say but I refrained because of what I heard from Bilal bin Harith."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 44
"Jibril, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet (ﷺ) when the sun had passed its zenith and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Zuhr when the sun has passed its zenith.' Then he waited until a man's shadow was equal to his height. Then he came to him for 'Asr and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Asr.' Then he waited until the sunset, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Maghrib.' So he got up and prayed it when the sun had set. Then he waited until the twilight disappeared, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Isha'.' So he got up and prayed it. Then he came to him when dawn broke and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he got up and prayed Subh.' So he got up and prayed Subh. Then he came to him the next day when a man's shadow was equal to his height, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Zuhr. Then Jibril came to him when a man's shadow was equal to twice his length and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed 'Asr. Then he came to him for Maghrib when the sun set, at exactly the same time as the day before, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Maghrib. Then he came to him for 'Isha' when the first third of the night had passed, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed 'Isha'. Then he came to him for Subh when it had become very bright, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed Subh. Then he said: 'The times of prayer one between those two (limits).'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 6, Hadith 33
The sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). As I went to 'A'isha who was busy in prayer. I said: What is the matter with the people that they are praying (a special prayer)? She ('A'isha) pointed towards the sky with her head. I said: Is it (an unusual) sign? She said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up for prayer for such a long time that I was about to faint. I caught hold of a waterskin lying by my side, and began to pour water over my head, or (began to sprinkle water) on my face. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then finished and the sun had brightened. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then addressed the people, (after) praising Allah and lauding Him, and then said: There was no such thing as I did not see earlier, but I saw it at this very place of mine. I ever saw Paradise and Hell. It was also revealed to me that you would be tried in the graves, as you would he tried something like the turmoil of the Dajjal. Asma' said: I do not know which word he actually used (qariban or mithl), and each one of you would be brought and it would be said: What is your knowledge about this man? If the person is a believer, (Asma' said: I do not know whether it was the word al-Mu'min or al-Mu'qin) he would say: He is Muhammad and he is the Messenger of Allah. He brought to us the clear signs and right guidance. So we responded and obeyed him. (He would repeat this three times), and it would be said to him: You should go to sleep. We already knew that you are a believer in him. So the pious man would go to sleep. So far as the hypocrite or sceptic is concerned (Asma' said: I do not know which word was that: al-Munafiq (hypocrite) or al-Murtad (doubtful) he would say: I do not know. I only uttered whatever I heard people say.
Sahih Muslim Book 10, Hadith 13
Once the Prophet (ﷺ) was preaching while a bedouin was sitting there. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A man from
among the people of Paradise will request Allah to allow him to cultivate the land Allah will say to
him, 'Haven't you got whatever you desire?' He will reply, 'yes, but I like to cultivate the land (Allah
will permit him and) he will sow the seeds, and within seconds the plants will grow and ripen and (the
yield) will be harvested and piled in heaps like mountains. On that Allah will say (to him), "Take, here
you are, O son of Adam, for nothing satisfies you.' "On that the bedouin said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!
Such man must be either from Quraish or from Ansar, for they are farmers while we are not." On that
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) smiled .
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 97, Hadith 144
We came to Mu'awiya b. Abu Sufyan as a deputation and Abu Huraira was among us. Each of us would prepare food for his companions turn by turn for a day. (Accordingly) when it was my turn I said: Abu Huraira, it is my turn today. So they came to my place. The food was not yet ready, so I said to Abu Huraira: I wish you could narrate to us a tradition from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) until the food was ready. (Complying with my request) Abu Huraira said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the day of the Conquest of Mecca. He appointed Khalid b. Walid as commander of the right flank, Zubair as commander of the left flank, and Abu 'Ubaida as commander of the foot-soldiers (who were to advance) to the interior of the valley. He (then) said: Abu Huraira, call the Ansar to me. So I called out to them and they came hurriedly. He said: O ye Assembly of the Ansaar, do you see the ruffians of the Quraish? They said: Yes. He said: See, when you meet them tomorrow, wipe them out. He hinted at this with his hand, placing his right hand on his left and said: You will meet us at as-Safa'. (Abu Huraira continued): Whoever was seen by them that day was put to death. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ascended the mount of as-Safa'. The Ansar also came there and surrounded the mount. Then came Abu Sufyan and said: Messenger ot Allah, the Quraish have perished. No member of the Quraish tribe will survive this day. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Who enters the house of Abu Safyin will be safe, who lays down arms will be safe, who locks his door will be safe. (some of) the Ansar said: (After all) the man has been swayed by tenderness towards his family and love for his city. At this, Divine inspiration descended upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: You were saying that the man has been swayed by tenderness towards his family and love for his city. Do you know what my name is? I am Muhammad, the bondman of God and His Messenger. (He repeated this thrice.) I left my native place for the take of Allah and joined you. So I will live with you and die with you. Now the Ansar said: By God, we said (that) only out of our greed for Allah and His Messenger. He said: Allah and His Apostle testify to you and accept your apology.
Sahih Muslim Book 32, Hadith 106
Abraham did not tell a lie except on three occasion. Twice for the Sake of Allah when he said, "I am
sick," and he said, "(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it." The (third was) that while
Abraham and Sarah (his wife) were going (on a journey) they passed by (the territory of) a tyrant.
Someone said to the tyrant, "This man (i.e. Abraham) is accompanied by a very charming lady." So,
he sent for Abraham and asked him about Sarah saying, "Who is this lady?" Abraham said, "She is my
sister." Abraham went to Sarah and said, "O Sarah! There are no believers on the surface of the earth
except you and I. This man asked me about you and I have told him that you are my sister, so don't
contradict my statement." The tyrant then called Sarah and when she went to him, he tried to take hold
of her with his hand, but (his hand got stiff and) he was confounded. He asked Sarah. "Pray to Allah
for me, and I shall not harm you." So Sarah asked Allah to cure him and he got cured. He tried to take
hold of her for the second time, but (his hand got as stiff as or stiffer than before and) was more
confounded. He again requested Sarah, "Pray to Allah for me, and I will not harm you." Sarah asked
Allah again and he became alright. He then called one of his guards (who had brought her) and said,
"You have not brought me a human being but have brought me a devil." The tyrant then gave Hajar as
a girl-servant to Sarah. Sarah came back (to Abraham) while he was praying. Abraham, gesturing with
his hand, asked, "What has happened?" She replied, "Allah has spoiled the evil plot of the infidel (or
immoral person) and gave me Hajar for service." (Abu Huraira then addressed his listeners saying,
"That (Hajar) was your mother, O Bani Ma-is-Sama (i.e. the Arabs, the descendants of Ishmael,
Hajar's son).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 60, Hadith 33
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) addressed us on the day of An-Nahr after the prayer, then he said: 'Whoever prays and offers the sacrifice as we do, his ritual is complete, and whoever offers the sacrifice before the prayer, that is just ordinary meat.' Abu Burdah bin Niyar said: 'O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), by Allah, we offered the sacrifice before I came out to the prayer, because I knew that today is the day of eating and drinking, so I hastened to do it and I ate of it and fed it to my family and neighbors.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'That is just a sheep for meat.' He said: 'I have a jadha'ah that is better than two meaty sheep, will that be sufficient (as a sacrifice) for me?' He said: 'Yes, but it will not be sufficient for anyone after you.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 19, Hadith 26
‘Ali bin Abi Talib said “I had an old she Camel that I got as my share from the booty on the day of Badr. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) also gave me an old she camel from the fifth that day. When I intended to cohabit with Fathimah daughter of the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ), I made arrangement with a man who was a goldsmith belonging to Banu Qainuqa’ to go with me so that we may bring grass. I intended to sell it to the goldsmith there by seeking help in my wedding feast. While I was collecting for my old Camels saddles, baskets and ropes both of she Camels were seated in a corner of the apartment of a man of the Ansar. When I collected what I collected (i.e., equipment) I turned (towards them). I suddenly found that the humps of she Camels were cut off and their hips were pierced and their lives were taken out. I could not control my eyes (to weep) when I saw that scene. I said “Who has done this?” They (the people) replied “Hamzah bin ‘Abd Al Muttalib”. He is among the drunkards of the Ansar in this house. A singing girl is singing for him and his Companions. While singing she said “Oh Hamza, rise to these plumpy old she Camels. So he jumped to the sword and cut off their humps, pierced their hips and took out their livers.” ‘Ali said “I went till I entered upon the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) while Zaid bin Harithah was with him.” The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) realized what I had met with. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) aid “What is the matter with you?” I said Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ), I never saw the thing that happened with me today. Hamzah wronged my she Camels, he cut off their humps, pierced their hips. Lo! He is in a house with drunkards. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) asked for his cloak. It was brought to him. He then went out, I and Zaid bin Harithah followed him until we reached the house where Hamzah was. He asked permission ( to entre). He was permitted. He found drunkards there. The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) began to rebuke him (Hamzah) for his action. Hamzah was intoxicated and his eyes were reddish. Hamzah looked at the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ). He then raised his eyes and looked at his knees, he then raised his eyes and looked at his navel and he then raised his eyes and looked at his face. Hamzah then said “Are you but the salves of my father? Then the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) knew that he was intoxicated. So the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) moved backward. He then went out and we also went out with him.”
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 20, Hadith 59
One of the daughters of `Uthman died at Mecca. We went to attend her funeral procession. Ibn `Umar
and Ibn `Abbas were also present. I sat in between them (or said, I sat beside one of them. Then a man
came and sat beside me.) `Abdullah bin `Umar said to `Amr bin `Uthman, "Will you not prohibit
crying as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has said, 'The dead person is tortured by the crying of his relatives.?" Ibn
`Abbas said, "`Umar used to say so." Then he added narrating, "I accompanied `Umar on a journey
from Mecca till we reached Al-Baida. There he saw some travelers in the shade of a Samura (A kind
of forest tree). He said (to me), "Go and see who those travelers are." So I went and saw that one of
them was Suhaib. I told this to `Umar who then asked me to call him. So I went back to Suhaib and
said to him, "Depart and follow the chief of the faithful believers." Later, when `Umar was stabbed,
Suhaib came in weeping and saying, "O my brother, O my friend!" (on this `Umar said to him, "O
Suhaib! Are you weeping for me while the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The dead person is punished by some of the
weeping of his relatives?" Ibn `Abbas added, "When `Umar died I told all this to Aisha and she said,
'May Allah be merciful to `Umar. By Allah, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not say that a believer is punished by
the weeping of his relatives. But he said, Allah increases the punishment of a non-believer because of
the weeping of his relatives." Aisha further added, "The Qur'an is sufficient for you (to clear up this
point) as Allah has stated: 'No burdened soul will bear another's burden.' " (35.18). Ibn `Abbas then
said, "Only Allah makes one laugh or cry." Ibn `Umar did not say anything after that.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 23, Hadith 46
Yahya related to me from Malik that Ata ibn Abdullah al-Khurasani
said that an old man from Suq al-Buram in Kufa had related to him that
Kab ibn Ujra said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, came to me while I was blowing under a cooking pot
belonging to my companions and my head and beard were full of lice. He
took my forehead and said, 'Shave your hair and fast three days or
feed six poor people.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, was aware that I did not have anything with me to
sacrifice.'"
Malik said, concerning paying compensation
(fidya) for the relief of physical discomfort, "The custom concerning
it is that no one pays compensation until he has done something which
makes it obligatory to pay compensation just as making amends
(kaffara) is only done when it has become obligatory for the one who
owes it. The person can pay the compensation wherever he wishes,
regardless of whether he has to sacrifice an animal or fast or give
sadaqa -- in Makka or in any other town."
Malik said, "It is
not correct for a person in ihram to pluck out any of his hair or to
shave it or cut it until he has left ihram, unless he is suffering
from an ailment of the head, in which case he owes the compensation
Allah the Exalted has ordered. It is not correct for a person in ihram
to cut his nails, or to kill his lice, or to remove them from his head
or from his skin or his garment to the ground. If a person in ihram
removes lice from his skin or his garment, he must give away the
quantity of food that he can scoop up with both hands. "
Malik said,"Anyone who, while in ihram, plucks out hairs from his nose
or armpit or rubs his body with a depilatory agent or shaves the hair
from around a head wound out of necessity or shaves his neck for the
place of the cupping glasses, regardless of whether it is in
forgetfulness or in ignorance, owes compensation in all these
instances, and he must not shave the place of the cupping glasses.
Someone, who, out of ignorance, shaves his head before he stones the
jamra. must also pay compensation."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 251
While I was riding behind the Prophet (ﷺ) and between me and him and between me and him there was
only the back of the saddle, he said, "0 Mu`adh!" I replied, "Labbaik, 0 Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and Sa`daik!"
he said, "Do you know what is Allah's right upon his slave?" I said, "Allah and His Apostle know
best" He said "Allah's right upon his slaves is that they should worship Him alone and not worship
anything else besides Him." Then he proceeded for a while and then said, "O Mu`adh bin Jabal!" I
replied, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ):, Sa`daik!' He said, "Do you know what is the right of the
slaves upon Allah if they do that?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know best." He said, "The right
of the slaves upon Allah is that He will not punish them (if they do that).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 77, Hadith 183
