"Urwah bin Az-Zubair told me that a woman stole at the time of the Messenger of Allah, during the Conquest. Her people went to Uswamah bin Zaid, to ask him to intercede." 'Urwah said: "When Usamah spoke to him concerning her, the face of the Messenger of Allah changed color and he said: 'Are you speaking to me concerning one of the Hadd punishments of Allah?" Usamah said: 'Pray to Allah for forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah.' When evening came, the Messenger of Allah stood up to deliver a speech. He praised Allah as He deserves, then he said: 'The people who came before you were destroyed because, whenever a noble person among them stole, they would carry out the Hadd punishment on him. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if Fatimah bint Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.' Then the Messenger of Allah ordered that the hand of that woman be cut off. After that she repented sincerely, and 'Aishah said: 'She used to come to me after that, and I would convey her needs to the Messenger of Allah."'
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 46, Hadith 34
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the people
of knowledge did not disapprove of people fasting using tooth-sticks
at any hour of the day in Ramadan, whether at the beginning or the
end, nor had he heard any of the people of knowledge disapproving of
or forbidding the practice.
Yahya said that he heard Malik
say, about fasting for six days after breaking the fast at the end of
Ramadan, that he had never seen any of the people of knowledge and
fiqh fasting them. He said, "I have not heard that any of our
predecessors used to do that, and the people of knowledge disapprove
of it and they are afraid that it might become a bida and that common
and ignorant people might join to Ramadan what does not belong to it,
if they were to think that the people of knowledge had given
permission for that to be done and were seen doing it.
Yahya
said that he heard Malik say, "I have never heard any of the people of
knowledge and fiqh and those whom people take as an example forbidding
fasting on the day of jumua. Fasting on it is good, and I have seen
one of the people of knowledge fasting it, and it seemed to me that he
was keen to do so."
Muwatta Malik Book 18, Hadith 66
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, (what is ascribed to him in the following Hadith):
Narrated Abu Salih As-Samman:
I saw Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri praying on a Friday, behind something which acted as a Sutra. A young
man from Bani Abi Mu'ait , wanted to pass in front of him, but Abu Sa`id repulsed him with a
push on his chest. Finding no alternative he again tried to pass but Abu Sa`id pushed him with a
greater force. The young man abused Abu Sa`id and went to Marwan and lodged a complaint against
Abu Sa`id and Abu Sa`id followed the young man to Marwan who asked him, "O Abu Sa`id! What
has happened between you and the son of your brother?" Abu Sa`id said to him, "I heard the Prophet (ﷺ)
saying, 'If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in
front of him, then he should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a
Shaitan (a Satan).' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 8, Hadith 156
I asked `Urwa bin Az-Zubair (regarding the Hajj of the Prophet (ﷺ) ). `Urwa replied, "Aisha narrated,
'When the Prophet (ﷺ) reached Mecca, the first thing he started with was the ablution, then he performed
Tawaf of the Ka`ba and his intention was not `Umra alone (but Hajj and `Umra together).' " Later Abu
Bakr I performed the Hajj and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Ka`ba and it was not
`Umra alone (but Hajj and `Umra together). And then `Umar did the same. Then `Uthman performed
the Hajj and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Ka`ba and it was not `Umra alone. And
then Muawiya and `Abdullah bin `Umar did the same. I performed Hajj with Ibn Az-Zubair and the
first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Ka`ba and it was not `Umra alone, (but Hajj and `Umra
together). Then I saw the Muhajirin (Emigrants) and Ansar doing the same and it was not `Umra
alone. And the last person I saw doing the same was Ibn `Umar, and he did not do another `Umra after
finishing the first. Now here is Ibn `Umar present amongst the people! They neither ask him nor
anyone of the previous ones. And all these people, on entering Mecca, would not start with anything
unless they had performed Tawaf of the Ka`ba, and would not finish their Ihram. And no doubt, I saw
my mother and my aunt, on entering Mecca doing nothing before performing Tawaf of the Ka`ba, and
they would not finish their lhram. And my mother informed me that she, her sister, Az-Zubair and
such and such persons had assumed lhram for `Umra and after passing their hands over the Corner
(the Black Stone) (i.e. finishing their Umra) they finished their Ihram."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 25, Hadith 124
There was no name dearer to `Ali than his nickname Abu Turab (the father of dust). He used to feel
happy whenever he was called by this name. Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to the house of Fatima but
did not find `Ali in the house. So he asked "Where is your cousin?" She replied, "There was
something (a quarrel) between me and him whereupon he got angry with me and went out without
having a midday nap in my house." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked a person to look for him. That person came,
and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! He (Ali) is sleeping in the mosque." So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went there and
found him lying. His upper body cover had fallen off to one side of his body, and so he was covered
with dust. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) started cleaning the dust from him, saying, "Get up, O Abu Turab! Get up,
Abu Turab!" (See Hadith No. 432, Vol 1)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 79, Hadith 54
The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Abu Talha, "Choose one of your boys to serve me." So Abu Talha took me (to
serve the Prophet (ﷺ) ) by giving me a ride behind him (on his camel). So I used to serve Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
whenever he stayed somewhere. I used to hear him saying, "O Allah! I seek refuge with you (Allah)
from (worries) care and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from
being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by other men." I kept on serving him till he
returned from (the battle of) Khaibar. He then brought Safiya, the daughter of Huyay whom he had
got (from the booty). I saw him making a kind of cushion with a cloak or a garment for her. He then
let her ride behind him. When we reached a place called As-Sahba', he prepared (a special meal
called) Hais, and asked me to invite the men who (came and) ate, and that was the marriage banquet
given on the consummation of his marriage to her. Then he proceeded till the mountain of Uhud
appeared, whereupon he said, "This mountain loves us and we love it." When he approached Medina,
he said, "O Allah! I make the land between its (i.e., Medina's) two mountains a sanctuary, as the
prophet Abraham made Mecca a sanctuary. O Allah! Bless them (the people of Medina) in their Mudd
and the Sa' (units of measuring).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 80, Hadith 60
from a man among his people, who said: "I went looking for the Prophet (ﷺ) but I was not able to find him. So I sat down, and then I saw a group of people, and he was among them, but I did not recognize him. He was settling some matter between them so when he was finished, some of them stood up with him and they were saying: 'O Messenger of Allah.' When I saw that, I said: "'Alaikas-Salam (upon you be peace) O Messenger of Allah! 'Alaikas-Salam (upon you be peace) O Messenger of Allah! 'Alaikas-Salam (upon you be peace) O Messenger of Allah!' He replied: 'Indeed "'Alaikas-Salam (upon you be peace)" is the greeting for the dead.' Then he came toward me and said: 'When a man meets his Muslim brother then he should say: "As-Salamu 'Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh (peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah)." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) responded to my greeting, he said: 'And may Allah's mercy be upon you, and may Allah's mercy be upon you, and may Allah's mercy be upon you.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 42, Hadith 34
"Jibril, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet (ﷺ) when the sun had passed its zenith and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Zuhr when the sun has passed its zenith.' Then he waited until a man's shadow was equal to his height. Then he came to him for 'Asr and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Asr.' Then he waited until the sunset, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Maghrib.' So he got up and prayed it when the sun had set. Then he waited until the twilight disappeared, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Isha'.' So he got up and prayed it. Then he came to him when dawn broke and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he got up and prayed Subh.' So he got up and prayed Subh. Then he came to him the next day when a man's shadow was equal to his height, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Zuhr. Then Jibril came to him when a man's shadow was equal to twice his length and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed 'Asr. Then he came to him for Maghrib when the sun set, at exactly the same time as the day before, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Maghrib. Then he came to him for 'Isha' when the first third of the night had passed, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed 'Isha'. Then he came to him for Subh when it had become very bright, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed Subh. Then he said: 'The times of prayer one between those two (limits).'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 6, Hadith 33
While the Prophet (ﷺ) was distributing (war booty etc.) one day, Dhul Khawaisira, a man from the tribe of
Bani Tamim, said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Act justly." The Prophets said, "Woe to you! Who else would
act justly if I did not act justly?" `Umar said (to the Prophet (ﷺ) ), "Allow me to chop his neck off." The
Prophet said, "No, for he has companions (who are apparently so pious that) if anyone of (you
compares his prayer with) their prayer, he will consider his prayer inferior to theirs, and similarly his
fasting inferior to theirs, but they will desert Islam (go out of religion) as an arrow goes through the
victim's body (games etc.) in which case if its Nasl is examined nothing will be seen thereon, and if its
Nady is examined, nothing will be seen thereon, and if its Qudhadh is examined, nothing will be seen
thereon, for the arrow has gone out too fast even for the excretions and blood to smear over it. Such
people will come out at the time of difference among the (Muslim) people and the sign by which they
will be recognized, will be a man whose one of the two hands will look like the breast of a woman or
a lump of flesh moving loosely." Abu Sa`id added, "I testify that I heard that from the Prophet (ﷺ) and
also testify that I was with `Ali when `Ali fought against those people. The man described by the
Prophet was searched for among the killed, and was found, and he was exactly as the Prophet (ﷺ) had
described him." (See Hadith No. 807, Vol. 4)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 189
Once the Prophet (ﷺ) sat on a pulpit and we sat around him. Then he said, "The things I am afraid of most
for your sake (concerning what will befall you after me) is the pleasures and splendors of the world
and its beauties which will be disclosed to you." Somebody said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Can the good
bring forth evil?" The Prophet (ﷺ) remained silent for a while. It was said to that person, "What is wrong
with you? You are talking to the Prophet (p.b.u.h) while he is not talking to you." Then we noticed
that he was being inspired divinely. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) wiped off his sweat and said, "Where is the
questioner?" It seemed as if the Prophet (ﷺ) liked his question. Then he said, "Good never brings forth
evil. Indeed it is like what grows on the banks of a water-stream which either kill or make the animals
sick, except if an animal eats its fill the Khadira (a kind of vegetable) and then faces the sun, and then
defecates and urinates and grazes again. No doubt this wealth is sweet and green. Blessed is the
wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, the orphans and to needy travelers. (Or the
Prophet said something similar to it) No doubt, whoever takes it illegally will be like the one who eats
but is never satisfied, and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 24, Hadith 67
We went out with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to a funeral, and I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) at the grave giving this instruction to the grave-digger:
Make it wide on the side of his feet, and make it wide on the side of his head. When he came back, he was received by a man who conveyed an invitation from a woman. So he came (to her), to it food was brought, and he put his hand (i.e. took a morsel in his hand); the people did the same and they ate. Our fathers noticed that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was moving a morsel around his mouth.
He then said: I find the flesh of a sheep which has been taken without its owner's permission.
The woman sent a message to say: Messenger of Allah, I sent (someone) to an-Naqi' to have a sheep bought for me, but there was none; so I sent (a message) to my neighbour who had bought a sheep, asking him to send it to me for the price (he had paid), but he could not be found. I, therefore, sent (a message) to his wife and she sent it to me.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Give this food to the prisoners.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 23, Hadith 7
“I was with my father on the plain in
Namirah,*
when some riders passed us and made their camels kneel down
at the
side of the road. My father said to me: ‘Stay with your
lambs until I
go to those people and see what they want.’ He said:
Then he (my
father) went out and I came, (i.e., I came near,) then
there was the
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and the time for prayer came
so I prayed
with them, and I was looking at the whiteness of the
armpits of the
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) every time he prostrated.”
Ibn Majah said: The people say `Ubaidullah bin `Abdullah, but Abu Bakr bin Abu Shaibah said: "The people say `Abdullah bin `Ubaidullah."
Muhammad bin Bashshar said: "`Abdur-Rahman bin Mahdi, Safwan bin `Eisa and Abu Dawud all said: 'Dawud bin Qais narrated to us, from `Ubaidullah bin `Abdullah bin Aqram, from his father, from the Prophet (ﷺ).'" With similar wording.
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 5, Hadith 79
"When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to pray Tahajjud, he said: Allahumma, lakal-hamdu anta nurus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna wa lakal-hamdu anta qayyamus-samawati wal ardi wa man fihinna wa lakal-hamdu, anta haqqun wa wa'duka haqqun wal jannatu haqqun wan-nuru haqqun wan-nabiyyuna haqqun wa Muhammadan haqqun, laka aslant wa 'alaika tawakkaltu wa bika amant. ( O Allah, to You be praise, You are the Light of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sustainer of the Heavens and the earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sovereign of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise; You are True, Your promise is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, the Hour is true, the Prophets are true and Muhammad is true. To You have I submitted, in You I put my trust and in You I have believed.'" Then (one of the narrators) Qutaibah mentioned some words the meaning of which was: "Wa bika khasamtu wa ilaika hakamtu, ighfirli ma quadrate wa ma akhkhartu wa ma a'lantu antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'khkhir, la ilaha illa anta wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (And with Your help I argue forward. There is no God but You and there is no power and no strength except with Allah).'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 20, Hadith 22
"I was asked about those who were involved in the case of Li'an and if they are to be separated, during the leadership of Mus'ab bin Az-Zubair. I did not know what to say. So I went to the house of Abdullah bin Umar and I sought permission to enter. I was told that he was taking a nap, but he heard me talking and he said: 'Is it Ibn Jubair? Enter. You would not have come except for a need.'"He said: "So I entered and found him lying on a saddlecloth from his mount. I said: 'O Abu Abdur-Rahman! Are those involved in Li'an separated?' He said: 'Glorious is Allah! Yes. The first who asked about that was so-and-so the son of so-and-so. He came to the Prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah! If one of us saw his wife committing adultery what should he do? If he were to say anything, his statement would be a horrible matter, and if he were to remain silent, his silence about the matter would be horrible."
"He said: 'So the Prophet remained silent and did not answer him. Afterwards he came to the Prophet and said: "The one who asked you about it has been tried by it." So Allah revealed these Ayat from Surat An-Nur. And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves - until the end of those Ayat. So he called for the man and recited the Ayat to him and admonished him, reminded him, and he told him: "Indeed the punishment of the world is less than the punishment of the Hereafter." So he said: "Nay! By the One Who sent you with the truth! I did not lie about her." Then he did the same with the woman, admonished her and reminding her and he told her: "Indeed the punishment of the world is less than the punishment of the Hereafter." She said: "Nay! By the One Who sent you with the truth! He is not telling the truth.'"
"He said: 'So he started with the man: He testified four times, by Allah that he is one of the truthful, and the fifth time that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was one of the liars. Then the same with the woman: She testified four times by Allah, that he was one of the liars, and the fifth time that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was one of the truthful. Then he separated the two of them.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 13, Hadith 29
