I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "Three men from among those who were before you, set out together
till they reached a cave at night and entered it. A big rock rolled down the mountain and closed the
mouth of the cave. They said (to each other), Nothing could save you from this rock but to invoke
Allah by giving reference to the righteous deed which you have done (for Allah's sake only).' So, one
of them said, 'O Allah! I had old parents and I never provided my family (wife, children etc.) with
milk before them. One day, by chance I was delayed, and I came late (at night) while they had slept. I
milked the sheep for them and took the milk to them, but I found them sleeping. I disliked to provide
my family with the milk before them. I waited for them and the bowl of milk was in my hand and I
kept on waiting for them to get up till the day dawned. Then they got up and drank the milk. O Allah!
If I did that for Your Sake only, please relieve us from our critical situation caused by this rock.' So,
the rock shifted a little but they could not get out."
The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "The second man said, 'O Allah! I had a cousin who was the dearest of all people
to me and I wanted to have sexual relations with her but she refused. Later she had a hard time in a
famine year and she came to me and I gave her one-hundred-and-twenty Dinars on the condition that
she would not resist my desire, and she agreed. When I was about to fulfill my desire, she said: It is
illegal for you to outrage my chastity except by legitimate marriage. So, I thought it a sin to have
sexual intercourse with her and left her though she was the dearest of all the people to me, and also I
left the gold I had given her. O Allah! If I did that for Your Sake only, please relieve us from the
present calamity.' So, the rock shifted a little more but still they could not get out from there."
The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "Then the third man said, 'O Allah! I employed few laborers and I paid them their
wages with the exception of one man who did not take his wages and went away. I invested his wages
and I got much property thereby. (Then after some time) he came and said to me: O Allah's slave! Pay
me my wages. I said to him: All the camels, cows, sheep and slaves you see, are yours. He said: O
Allah's slave! Don't mock at me. I said: I am not mocking at you. So, he took all the herd and drove
them away and left nothing. O Allah! If I did that for Your Sake only, please relieve us from the
present suffering.' So, that rock shifted completely and they got out walking.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 37, Hadith 12
"I asked Ibn 'Umar about what containers the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited. He informed us in your language, and he explained it to us in our language. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited Al-Hantamah, and it is an earthenware container, and he prohibited Ad-Dubba', and it is gourd, and he prohibited An-Naqir, and it is the trunk of a date-palm that is hollowed out or carved, and he prohibited Al-Muzaffat, and it is coated with pitch. And he ordered that Nabidh be prepared in water-skins."
He said: There are narrations on this topic from 'Umar, 'Ali, Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Sa'eed, Abu Hurairah, 'Abdur-Rahman bin Ya'mur, Samurah, Anas, 'Aishah, 'Imran bin Husain, 'A'idh bin 'Amr, Al-Hakam Al-Ghifari, and Maimunah.
This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 26, Hadith 8
There was a disagreement between them (i.e. Ibn `Abbas and Ibn Az-Zubair) so I went to Ibn `Abbas
in the morning and said (to him), "Do you want to fight against Ibn Zubair and thus make lawful what
Allah has made unlawful (i.e. fighting in Meccas?" Ibn `Abbas said, "Allah forbid! Allah ordained
that Ibn Zubair and Bani Umaiya would permit (fighting in Mecca), but by Allah, I will never regard it
as permissible." Ibn `Abbas added. "The people asked me to take the oath of allegiance to Ibn
AzZubair. I said, 'He is really entitled to assume authority for his father, Az-Zubair was the helper of
the Prophet, his (maternal) grandfather, Abu Bakr was (the Prophet's) companion in the cave, his
mother, Asma' was 'Dhatun-Nitaq', his aunt, `Aisha was the mother of the Believers, his paternal aunt,
Khadija was the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) , and the paternal aunt of the Prophet (ﷺ) was his grandmother. He
himself is pious and chaste in Islam, well versed in the Knowledge of the Qur'an. By Allah! (Really, I
left my relatives, Bani Umaiya for his sake though) they are my close relatives, and if they should be
my rulers, they are equally apt to be so and are descended from a noble family.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 187
“The
dead
person ends up in his grave, then the righteous man is made to
sit up
in his grave with no fear or panic. Then it is said to him:
‘What
religion did you follow?’ He said: ‘I was in Islam.’ It is said
to him: ‘Who is this man?’ He says: ‘Muhammad the Messenger of
Allah
(ﷺ). He brought us clear signs from Allah and we believed
him.’ It
is said to him: ‘Have you seen Allah?’ He says: ‘No
one is able to see
Allah.’ Then a window to Hell is opened for him,
and he sees it, parts
of it destroying others. Then it is said to
him: ‘Look at what Allah
has saved you from.’ Then a window to
Paradise is opened to him, and
he looks at its beauty and what is in
it. It is said to him: ‘This is
your place.’ And it is said to
him: ‘You had certain faith and you
died in that state, and in that
state you will be resurrected if Allah
wills.’ And the evil man is
made to sit up in his grave with fear and
panic. It is said to him:
‘What religion did you follow?’ He says: ‘I
do not know.’ It
is said to him: ‘Who is this man?’ He says: ‘I heard
the people
saying something and I said it too.’ Then a window to
Paradise is
opened to him, and he looks at its beauty and what is in
it. It is
said to him: ‘Look at what Allah has diverted away from
you.’
Then a window to Hell is opened for him, and he sees it, parts
of it
destroying others, and it is said to him: ‘This is your place.
You
were doubtful; in this state you died and in this state you will
be
resurrected, if Allah wills.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 37, Hadith 169
That he and Abu Talha were coming in the company of the Prophet (towards Medina), while Safiya
(the Prophet's wife) was riding behind him on his she-camel. After they had covered a portion of the
way suddenly the foot of the she-camel slipped and both the Prophet (ﷺ) and the woman (i.e., his wife,
Safiya) fell down. Abu Talha jumped quickly off his camel and came to the Prophet (saying.) "O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Let Allah sacrifice me for you! Have you received any injury?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"No, but take care of the woman (my wife)." Abu Talha covered his face with his garment and went
towards her and threw his garment over her. Then the woman got up and Abu Talha prepared their she-camel (by tightening its saddle, etc.) and both of them (the Prophet (ﷺ) and Safiya) mounted it. Then all of
them proceeded and when they approached near Medina, or saw Medina, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Ayibun, taibun, `abidun, liRabbina hamidun (We are coming back (to Medina) with repentance, worshiping
(our Lord) and celebrating His (our Lord's) praises". The Prophet (ﷺ) continued repeating these words till
he entered the city of Medina.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 209
The news of my daily fasting and praying every night throughout the night reached the Prophet. So he
sent for me or I met him, and he said, "I have been informed that you fast everyday and pray every
night (all the night). Fast (for some days) and give up fasting (for some days); pray and sleep, for your
eyes have a right on you, and your body and your family (i.e. wife) have a right on you." I replied, "I
have more power than that (fasting)." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Then fast like the fasts of (the Prophet)
David". I said, "How?" He replied, "He used to fast on alternate days, and he used not to flee on
meeting the enemy." I said, "From where can I get that chance?" (`Ata' said, "I do not know how the
expression of fasting daily throughout the life occurred.") So, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, twice, "Whoever fasts
daily throughout his life is just as the one who does not fast at all."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 30, Hadith 84
"I heard 'Awf bin Malik say: "I heard the Messenger of Allah offering the funeral prayer for one who had died, and I heard him say in his supplication: Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa 'afihi, wa a'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' mudkhalahu waghsilhu bil-ma wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama naqqaita-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas. Wa abdilhu daran khairan min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi. Wa adkhilahul-jannah wa najjihi min an-nar" (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound and forgive him, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of his sin as you cleanse a white garment of dirt. O Allah, give him a house better than his house and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife, and admit him to Paradise and save him from Hellfire)." Or he said: "Wa a'idhhu min 'adhab al-qabr (And protect him from the torment of the grave.)"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 21, Hadith 167
About the story of `Aisha and their narrations were similar attesting each other, when the liars said
what they invented about `Aisha, and the Divine Inspiration was delayed, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent for `Ali
and Usama to consult them in divorcing his wife (i.e. `Aisha). Usama said, "Keep your wife, as we
know nothing about her except good." Barirah said, "I cannot accuse her of any defect except that she
is still a young girl who sleeps, neglecting her family's dough which the domestic goats come to eat
(i.e. she was too simpleminded to deceive her husband)." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Who can help me to
take revenge over the man who has harmed me by defaming the reputation of my family? By Allah, I
have not known about my family-anything except good, and they mentioned (i.e. accused) a man
about whom I did not know anything except good."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 52, Hadith 1
Yahya related to me from Malik, from Hisham ibn Urwa, from his
father, that A'isha, umm al-muminin, said to him, "Son of my sister,
it is only for ten nights, so if you get an urge to do something,
leave it," by which she meant eating game-meat.
Malik said
that if game was hunted forthe sake of a man who is in ihram and it
was prepared for him and he ate some of it knowing that it had been
hunted for his sake, then he had to pay a forfeit for all of the game
that had been hunted on his behalf.
Malik was asked about
whether someone who was forced to eat carrion while he was in ihram
should hunt game and then eat that rather than the carrion, and he
said, "It is better for him to eat the carrion, because Allah, the
Blessed and Exalted, has not given permission for someone in ihram to
either eat game or take it in any situation, but He has made
allowances for eating carrion when absolutely necessary."
Malik said, "It is not halal for anyone, whether in ihram or not, to
eat game which has been killed or sacrificed by some one in ihram,
because, whether it was killed deliberately or by mistake, it was not
done in a halal manner, and so eating it is not halal. I have heard
this from more than one person. Somebody who kills game and then eats
it only has to make a single kaffara, which is the same as for
somebody who kills game but does not eat any of it."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 87
I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the day of the Conquest of Mecca and found him taking a bath, and Fatimah, his daughter, had provided him privacy with the help of a cloth. I gave him salutation and he said: Who is she? I said: It is Umm Hani, daughter of Abu Talib. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Greeting for Umm Hani. When he had completed the bath, he stood up and observed eight rak'ahs wrapped up in one cloth. When he turned back (after the prayer), I said to him: Messenger of Allah, the son of my mother 'Ali b. Abu Talib is going to kill a person, Fulan b. Hubaira whom I have given protection. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We too have given protection whom you have given protection, O Umm Hani. Umm Hani said: It was the forenoon (prayer).
Sahih Muslim Book 6, Hadith 99
“Ibn Juraij said to me: “Ubaidullah bin Abi Yazid informed me that Ibn Abbas said: “A man came to the Prophet and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! I had a dream at night while I was sleeping, in which I was praying behind a tree, when I prostrated, the tree prostrated along with me. Then I heard it saying: “O Allah! Record for me a reward with You for it, remove a sin from me by it, and store it away for me with You for it, and accept it from me as You accepted it from Your worshipper Dawud (Allāhumma uktub lī bihā `indaka ajran, waḍa` `annī bihā wizran, waj`alhā lī `indaka dhukhran, wa taqabbalhā minnī kamā taqabbalta min `abdika Dāwūd).” Al-Hasan said: “Ibn Juraij said to me: ‘Your grandfather said to me: “Ibn Abbas said: ‘So the Prophet recited (an Ayah of) prostration, then prostrated.’” “So Ibn Abbas said: ‘I listened to him, and he was saying the same as the man informed that the tree had said.’”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 55
Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said heard Muhammad
ibn Yahya ibn Habban mentioning that a certain man passed Abu Dharr at
ar-Rabadha (which was about 30 miles from Madina) and Abu Dharr asked
him, "Where are you heading to?" and he replied, "I am intending to do
hajj." Abu Dharr questioned, "Has anything else brought you out?" and
he said, "No," so Abu Dharr said "Resume what you are doing
wholeheartedly."
The man related, "I went on till I came to
Makka and I stayed as long as Allah willed. Suddenly, one time, I was
with a crowd of people thronging about a man and I pushed through the
people to him and it was the old man that I had come across at ar-
Rabadha. When he saw me, he recognized me and said, 'Ah, you have done
what I told you.' "
