“I came to the Messenger of
Allah
(ﷺ) during the campaign of Tabuk, when he was in a tent made
of
leather, so I sat in front of the tent. The Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ)
said: ‘Enter, O ‘Awf.’ I said, ‘All of me, O Messenger
of Allah?’ He
said: ‘All of you.’ Then he said: ‘O ‘Awf,
remember six things (that
will occur) before the Hour comes, one of
which is my death.’ I was
very shocked and saddened at that. He
said: ‘Count that as the first.
Then (will come) the conquest of
Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem); then a
disease which will appear among you
and cause you and your offspring
to die as martyrs and will purify
your deeds; then there will be
(much) wealth among you, so that if a
man were to be given one hundred
Dinar he would still be
dissatisfied; and there will be tribulation
among you that will not
leave any Muslim house untouched;* then there
will be a treaty
between you and the Romans, then they will betray you
and march
against you with eighty banners, under each of which will be
twelve
thousand (troops).’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 117
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his
father fromYahyaibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Ha ib that he had set off for
Mumra with Umar ibn al-Khattab in a party of riders, among whom was
Amr ibn al-As. Umar ibn al-Khattab dismounted for a rest late at night
on a certain road near a certain oasis. Umar had a wet dream when it
was almost dawn and there was no water among the riding party. He rode
until he came to some water and then he began to wash off what he saw
of the semen until it had gone. Amr ibn al-As said to him, "It is
morning and there are clothes with us, so allow your garment to be
washed. ''Umar ibn al-Khattab said to him, "I am surprised at you, Amr
ibn al-As! Even if you could find clothes, would everybody be able to
find them? By Allah, if I were to do it, it would become a sunna. No,
I wash what I see, and I sprinkle with water what I do not see."
Malik spoke about a man who found traces of a wet dream on his
clothes and did not know when it had occurred and did not remember
anything he had seen in his sleep. He said, "Let the intention of his
ghusl be from the time when he last slept, and if he has prayed since
that last sleep he should repeat it. This is because often a man has a
wet dream and sees nothing, and often he sees something but does not
have an emission. But, if he finds liquid on his garment he must do
ghusl. This is because Umar repeated what he had prayed after the time
he had last slept and not what was before it."
Muwatta Malik Book 2, Hadith 84
‘While he was among ten of the
Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) including Abu Qatadah: “I
heard Abu Humaid As-Sa’idi say: ‘I am the most knowledgeable of
you
concerning the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ They
said:
‘Why? By Allah, you did not follow him more than we did, and
you did
not accompany him for longer.’ He said: ‘Yes I am.’
They said: ‘Show
us.’ He said: ‘When the Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ) stood up for prayer,
he would say the Takbir, then he would
raise his hands parallel to his
shoulders, and every part of his body
would settle in place. Then he
would recite, then he would raise his
hands parallel to his shoulders
and bow, placing his palms on his
knees and supporting his weight on
them. He neither lowered his head,
nor raised it up, it was evenly
balanced (between either extreme).
Then he would say: “Sami’ Allahu
liman hamidah (Allah hears those
who praise Him); and he would raise
his hands parallel with his
shoulders, until every bone returned to
its place. Then he would
prostrate himself on the ground, keeping his
arms away from his
sides. Then he would raise his head and tuck his
left foot under him
and sit on it, and he would spread his toes when
he prostrated.* Then
he would prostrate, then say the Takbir and sit
on his left foot,
until every bone returned to its place. Then he
would stand up and do
the same in the next Rak’ah. Then when he stood
up after two
Rak’ah, he would raise his hands level with his shoulders
as he did
at the beginning of the prayer. Then he would offer the rest
of his
prayer in like manner until, when he did the prostration after which
the
Taslim comes, he would push one of his feet back and sit with his
weight on his left side, Mutawarrikan.’** They said: ‘You have
spoken
the truth; this is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to
perform
the prayer.’”
* Meaning that he would plant them in such a way that they were facing the Qiblah.
** Mutawarrikan: i.e., sitting with the left foot brought forward so that one's buttocks are in direct contact with the ground.
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 5, Hadith 259
Ghalib quoted a man who stated on the authority of his father that his grandfather reported: They lived at one of the springs. When Islam reached them, the master of the spring offered his people one hundred camels if they embraced Islam. So they embraced Islam, and he distributed the camels among them. But it occurred to him that he should take the camels back from them.
He sent his son to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said to him: Go to the Prophet (ﷺ) and tell him: My father extends his greetings to you. He asked his people to give them one hundred camels if they embraced Islam, and they embraced Islam. He divided the camels among them. But it occurred to him then that he should withdraw his camels from them. Is he more entitled to them or we? If he says: Yes or no, then tell him: My father is an old man, and he is the chief of the people living at the water. He has requested you to make me chief after him.
He came to him and said: My father has extended his greetings to you. He replied: On you and you father be peace. He said: My father asked his people to give them one hundred camels if they embraced Islam. So they embraced Islam, and their belief in Islam is good. Then it occurred to him that he should take his camels back from them. Is he more entitled to them or are they?
He said: If he likes to give them the camels, he may give them; and if he likes to take them back, he is more entitled to them than his people. If they embraced Islam, then for them is their Islam. If they do not embrace Islam, they will be fought against in the cause of Islam.
He said: My father is an old man; he is the chief of the people living at the spring. He has asked you to appoint me chief after him.
He replied: The office of a chief is necessary, for people must have chiefs, but the chiefs will go to Hell.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 20, Hadith 7
Ya`la used to say, "I wish I could see Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at the time when he is being inspired divinely."
Ya`la added "While the Prophet (ﷺ) was at Al-Ja'rana, shaded with a cloth sheet (in the form of a tent) and
there were staying with him, some of his companions under it, suddenly there came to him a bedouin
wearing a cloak and perfumed extravagantly. He said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ! What is your opinion
regarding a man who assumes the state of Ihram for `Umra wearing a cloak after applying perfume to
his body?" `Umar signalled with his hand to Ya`la to come (near). Ya`la came and put his head
(underneath that cloth sheet) and saw the Prophet (ﷺ) red-faced and when that state (of the Prophet (ﷺ) ) was
over, he said, "Where is he who as already asked me about the `Umra?" The man was looked for and
brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), "As for the perfume you have applied to your body,
wash it off your body) thrice, and take off your cloak, and then do in your `Umra the rites you do in
your Hajj."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 358
I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about the game killed by a Mi'rad (i.e. a sharp-edged piece of wood or a piece of
wood provided with a sharp piece of iron used for hunting). He said, "If the game is killed with its
sharp edge, eat of it, but if it is killed with its shaft, with a hit by its broad side then the game is
(unlawful to eat) for it has been beaten to death." I asked him about the game killed by a trained
hound. He said, "If the hound catches the game for you, eat of it, for killing the game by the hound, is
like its slaughtering. But if you see with your hound or hounds another dog, and you are afraid that it
might have shared in hunting the game with your hound and killed it, then you should not eat of it,
because you have mentioned Allah's name on (sending) your hound only, but you have not mentioned
it on some other hound.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 72, Hadith 1
the watering
place of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from
which he will give to the people of his community on the day of
rising.)" They asked him, "Messenger of Allah! How will you recognise
those of your community who come after you?"
He said,
"Doesn't a man who has horses with white legs and white blazes on
their foreheads among totally black horses recognise which ones are
his own?" They said, "Of course, Messenger of Allah." He went on,
"Even so will they come on the day of rising with white marks on their
foreheads, hands and feet from wudu, and I will precede them to the
Hawd. Some men will be driven away from the Hawd as if they were
straying camels and I shall call out to them, 'Will you not come? Will
you not come? Will you not come?' and someone will say, 'They changed
things after you,' so I shall say, 'Then away with them, away with
them, away with them!' "
Muwatta Malik Book 2, Hadith 28
"The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He stood and led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood for a long time that was shorter than the first time, then he bowed for a long time that was shorter than the first time. Then he prostrated for a long time, then he sat up, then he prostrated for a long time that was shorter than the first time. Then he stood up and bowed twice again, doing the same again. Then he prostrated twice, doing the same again, until he had finished his prayer. Then he said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT), and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then hasted to remember Allah (SWT) and pray.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 16, Hadith 25
Ibn Shihab informed me of Lian and the tradition related to it, referring to the narration of Sahl bin
Sa`d, the brother of Bani Sa`idi He said, "An Ansari man came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said, 'O Allah's
Apostle! If a man saw another man with his wife, should he kill him, or what should he do?' So Allah
revealed concerning his affair what is mentioned in the Holy Qur'an about the affair of those involved
in a case of Lian. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Allah has given His verdict regarding you and your wife.' So they
carried out Lian in the mosque while I was present there. When they had finished, the man said, "O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! If I should now keep her with me as a wife then I have told a lie about her. Then he
divorced her thrice before Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered him, when they had finished the Lian process. So
he divorced her in front of the Prophet (ﷺ) ." Ibn Shihab added, "After their case, it became a tradition that
a couple involved in a case of Lian should be separated by divorce. That lady was pregnant then, and
later on her son was called by his mother's name. The tradition concerning their inheritance was that
she would be his heir and he would inherit of her property the share Allah had prescribed for him."
Ibn Shihab said that Sahl bin Sa`d As'Saidi said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said (in the above narration), "If that
lady delivers a small red child like a lizard, then the lady has spoken the truth and the man was a liar,
but if she delivers a child with black eyes and huge lips, then her husband has spoken the truth." Then
she delivered it in the shape one would dislike (as it proved her guilty).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 68, Hadith 58
a man entered the Msjid on a Friday when the Messenger of Allah was delivering the Khutbah, and he said: "Pray two Rak'ahs." Then he came on the following Friday, when the Prophet was delivering the Khutbah and he said: "Pray two Rak'ahs." Then he came on the third Friday, when the Prophet was delivering Khutbah and he said: "Pray two Rak'ahs." Then he said: "Give in charity." So they gave in charity, and he gave him (that man) two garments. Then he said: "Give in charity" and (that man) threw one of his two garments. The Messenger of Allah said: "Have you not seen this man? He entered the Masjid in scruffy clothes and I hoped that you would notice him, and give charity to him, but you did not do that, So I said, 'Give in charity.' You gave in charity, and I gave him two garments, then I said; 'Give in charity' and he threw one of his two garments. Take your garment." And he rebuked him.
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 23, Hadith 102
When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) set out (towards Mecca) during the year of the Conquest (of Mecca) and this
news reached (the infidels of Quraish), Abu Sufyan, Hakim bin Hizam and Budail bin Warqa came
out to gather information about Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , They proceeded on their way till they reached a place
called Marr-az-Zahran (which is near Mecca). Behold! There they saw many fires as if they were the
fires of `Arafat. Abu Sufyan said, "What is this? It looked like the fires of `Arafat." Budail bin Warqa'
said, "Banu `Amr are less in number than that." Some of the guards of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saw them and
took them over, caught them and brought them to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Abu Sufyan embraced Islam.
When the Prophet (ﷺ) proceeded, he said to Al-Abbas, "Keep Abu Sufyan standing at the top of the
mountain so that he would look at the Muslims. So Al-`Abbas kept him standing (at that place) and
the tribes with the Prophet (ﷺ) started passing in front of Abu Sufyan in military batches. A batch passed
and Abu Sufyan said, "O `Abbas Who are these?" `Abbas said, "They are (Banu) Ghifar." Abu Sufyan
said, I have got nothing to do with Ghifar." Then (a batch of the tribe of) Juhaina passed by and he
said similarly as above. Then (a batch of the tribe of) Sa`d bin Huzaim passed by and he said similarly
as above. then (Banu) Sulaim passed by and he said similarly as above. Then came a batch, the like of
which Abu Sufyan had not seen. He said, "Who are these?" `Abbas said, "They are the Ansar headed
by Sa`d bin Ubada, the one holding the flag." Sa`d bin Ubada said, "O Abu Sufyan! Today is the day
of a great battle and today (what is prohibited in) the Ka`ba will be permissible." Abu Sufyan said., "O
`Abbas! How excellent the day of destruction is! "Then came another batch (of warriors) which was
the smallest of all the batches, and in it there was Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and his companions and the flag of
the Prophet (ﷺ) was carried by Az-Zubair bin Al Awwam. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) passed by Abu Sufyan,
the latter said, (to the Prophet), "Do you know what Sa`d bin 'Ubada said?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What
did he say?" Abu Sufyan said, "He said so-and-so." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Sa`d told a lie, but today Allah
will give superiority to the Ka`ba and today the Ka`ba will be covered with a (cloth) covering."
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered that his flag be fixed at Al-Hajun.
Narrated `Urwa: Nafi` bin Jubair bin Mut`im said, "I heard Al-Abbas saying to Az-Zubair bin Al-
`Awwam, 'O Abu `Abdullah ! Did Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) order you to fix the flag here?' " Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
ordered Khalid bin Al-Walid to enter Mecca from its upper part from Ka'da while the Prophet (ﷺ) himself
entered from Kuda. Two men from the cavalry of Khalid bin Al-Wahd named Hubaish bin Al-Ash'ar
and Kurz bin Jabir Al-Fihri were martyred on that day.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 314
I heard Hisham bin Al-Hakim reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had not taught me. So I was about to jump over him during his Salat (prayer) but I waited till he finished his Salat (prayer) whereupon I put, either his upper garment or my upper garment around his neck and seized him by it and asked him, "Who has taught you this Surah?" He replied: "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has taught it to me." I said (to him), "You have told a lie! By Allah, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has taught me this Surah which I have heard you reciting." So I dragged him to the Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). I said: "O Allah's Messenger I have heard this man reciting Surat Al-Furqan in a way in which you have not taught me, and you did teach me Surah Al-Furqan." On that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O 'Umar, release him! Recite, O Hisham". So Hisham recited before him in the way as I heard him reciting. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "It has been revealed like this." Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Recite, O 'Umar" So recited it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has been revealed like this." And then he added, "This Qur'an has been revealed to be recited in seven different ways, so recite it whichever way is easier for you."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 88, Hadith 18
A man from the Jews, having been slapped on his face, came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Muhammad!
A man from your companions from the Ansar has slapped me on my face!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Call
him." When they called him, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Why did you slap him?" He said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!
While I was passing by the Jews, I heard him saying, 'By Him Who selected Moses above the human
beings,' I said, 'Even above Muhammad?' I became furious and slapped him on the face." The Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "Do not give me superiority over the other prophets, for on the Day of Resurrection the people
will become unconscious and I will be the first to regain consciousness. Then I will see Moses holding
one of the legs of the Throne. I will not know whether he has come to his senses before me or that the
shock he had received at the Mountain, (during his worldly life) was sufficient for him."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 160
A bedouin came and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Judge between us according to Allah's Laws." His
opponent got up and said, "He is right. Judge between us according to Allah's Laws." The bedouin
said, "My son was a laborer working for this man, and he committed illegal sexual intercourse with
his wife. The people told me that my son should be stoned to death; so, in lieu of that, I paid a ransom
of one hundred sheep and a slave girl to save my son. Then I asked the learned scholars who said,
"Your son has to be lashed one-hundred lashes and has to be exiled for one year." The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"No doubt I will judge between you according to Allah's Laws. The slave-girl and the sheep are to go
back to you, and your son will get a hundred lashes and one year exile." He then addressed somebody,
"O Unais! go to the wife of this (man) and stone her to death" So, Unais went and stoned her to death.
