27 Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Umar ibn
al-Khattab, if he was travelling in Ramadan and knew that he would
reach Madina at the begining of the day ,would do so fasting.
Yahya said that Malik said, "Someone who is travelling and knows that
he will be reaching his people in the first part of the day, and then
dawn breaks before he gets there, should be fasting when he gets
there."
Malik said, "Someone who intends to go away (on a
journey) in Ramadan, and then dawn breaks while he is still on his
land before he has left, should fast that day."
Malik said
that a man who returns from a journey in Ramadan and is not fasting
may have sexual intercourse with his wife if he wishes, if she is not
fasting and she has just become pure after her menses.
Muwatta Malik Book 18, Hadith 29
We were with the Prophet (ﷺ) in Ghazwa, and when we returned and approached Medina, I wanted to
hurry while riding a slow camel. A rider overtook me and pricked my camel with a spear which he
had, whereupon my camel started running as fast as any other fast camel you may see. I looked back,
and behold, the rider was Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I am newly married " He asked,
"Have you got married?" I replied, "Yes." He said, "A virgin or a matron?" I replied, "(Not a virgin)
but a matron" He said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you could play with her and she
with you?" When we reached (near Medina) and were going to enter it, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Wait till
you enter your home early in the night so that the lady whose hair is unkempt may comb her hair and
that the lady whose husband has been away may shave her pubic hair."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 180
Some angels came to the Prophet (ﷺ) while he was sleeping. Some of them said, "He is sleeping." Others
said, "His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake." Then they said, "There is an example for this
companion of yours." One of them said, "Then set forth an example for him." Some of them said, "He
is sleeping." The others said, "His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake." Then they said, "His
example is that of a man who has built a house and then offered therein a banquet and sent an inviter
(messenger) to invite the people. So whoever accepted the invitation of the inviter, entered the house
and ate of the banquet, and whoever did not accept the invitation of the inviter, did not enter the
house, nor did he eat of the banquet." Then the angels said, "Interpret this example to him so that he
may understand it." Some of them said, "He is sleeping.'' The others said, "His eyes are sleeping but
his heart is awake." And then they said, "The houses stands for Paradise and the call maker is
Muhammad; and whoever obeys Muhammad, obeys Allah; and whoever disobeys Muhammad,
disobeys Allah. Muhammad separated the people (i.e., through his message, the good is distinguished
from the bad, and the believers from the disbelievers).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 96, Hadith 13
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) supplicated with many supplications of which we did not preserve a thing. We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you supplicated with many supplications of which we did not preserve a thing.’ He (ﷺ) said: ‘Should I not direct you to what will include all of that? That you say: O Allah, we ask You from the good of what Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) asked You for, and we seek refuge in You from the evil of that which Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sought refuge in You from, and You are the one from Whom aid is sought, and it is for You to fulfill, and there is no might or power except by Allah (Allāhumma innā nas’aluka min khairi mā sa’alaka minhu nabiyyuka Muḥammad, ṣallallāhu `alaihi wa sallam, wa na`ūdhu bika min sharri masta`ādha minhu nabiyyuka Muḥammad, ṣallallāhu `alaihi wa sallam, wa antal-musta`ānu wa `alaikal-balāgh, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh).’”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 152
Malik related to me from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn al-Hadi from
Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith at-Taymi from Sulayman ibn Yasar
from Abdullah ibn Abi Umayya that a woman's husband died, and she did
the idda of four months and ten days. Then she married when she was
free to marry. She stayed with her husband for four and a half months,
then gave birth to a fully developed child. Her husband went to Umar
ibn al-Khattab and mentioned that to him, so Umar called some of the
old women of the Jahiliyya and asked them about that. One of the women
said, "I will tell you what happened with this woman. When her husband
died, she was pregnant by him, but then the blood flowed from her
because of his death and the child became dry in her womb. When her
new husband had intercourse with her and the water reached the child,
the child moved in the womb and grew." Umar ibn al-Khattab believed
her and separated them (until she had completed her idda). Umar said,
"Only good has reached me about you two," and he connected the child
to the first husband.
Muwatta Malik Book 36, Hadith 31
Once in the lifetime of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) the people were afflicted with drought (famine). While
the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutba on a Friday, a Bedouin stood up and said, "O, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!
Our possessions are being destroyed and the children are hungry; Please invoke Allah (for rain)". So
the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands. At that time there was not a trace of cloud in the sky. By Him in Whose
Hands my soul is as soon as he lowered his hands, clouds gathered like mountains, and before he got
down from the pulpit, I saw the rain falling on the beard of the Prophet. It rained that day, the next
day, the third day, the fourth day till the next Friday. The same Bedouin or another man stood up and
said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The houses have collapsed, our possessions and livestock have been
drowned; Please invoke Allah (to protect us)". So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised both his hands and said, "O
Allah! Round about us and not on us". So, in whatever direction he pointed with his hands, the clouds
dispersed and cleared away, and Medina's (sky) became clear as a hole in between the clouds. The
valley of Qanat remained flooded, for one month, none came from outside but talked about the
abundant rain.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 11, Hadith 57
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from clsa ibn
Talha that Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As said, "The Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stopped for the people at
Mina, and they questioned him and a man came and said to him,
'Messenger of Allah, I was unclear about what to do and I shaved
before sacrificing,' and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, said, 'Sacrifice, and don't worry.' Then another
came to him and said 'Messenger of Allah, I was unclear about what to
do and I sacrificed before throwing the stones.' He advised, 'Throw,
and don't worry.' "
Amr continued, saying that the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was not asked about
anything done before or after without his saying, "Do it, and don't
worry."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 254
I heard `Aisha saying, "When the news of the martyrdom of Ibn Haritha, Ja`far bin Abi Talib and
`Abdullah bin Rawaka reached, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sat with sorrow explicit on his face." `Aisha added, "I
was then peeping through a chink in the door. A man came to him and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The
women of Ja`far are crying.' Thereupon the Prophet (ﷺ) told him to forbid them to do so. So the man went
away and returned saying, "I forbade them but they did not listen to me." The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered him
again to go (and forbid them). He went again and came saying, 'By Allah, they overpowered me (i.e.
did not listen to me)." `Aisha said that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said (to him), "Go and throw dust into their
mouths." Aisha added, "I said, May Allah put your nose in the dust! By Allah, neither have you done
what you have been ordered, nor have you relieved Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) from trouble."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 297
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that his
father said that a man who pronounced a dhihar from his four wives in
one statement, had only to do one kaffara. Yahya related the same as
that to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman.
Malik
said, "That is what is done among us. Allah, the Exalted said about
the kaffara for pronouncing dhihar, 'It is to free a slave before they
touch one another. If he does not find the means to do that, then
fasting for two consecutive months before they touch one another. If
he cannot do that, it is to feed sixty poor people. ' " (Sura 58 ayats
4,5).
Malik said that a man who pronounced dhihar from his
wife on various occasions had only to do one kaffara. If he pronounced
dhihar, and then did kaffara, and then pronounced dhihar after he had
done the kaffara, he had to do kaffara again.
Malik said,
"Some one who pronounces dhihar from his wife and then has intercourse
with her before he has done kaffara, only has to do one kaffara. He
must abstain from her until he does kaffara and ask forgiveness of
Allah. That is the best of what I have heard. "
Malik said,
"It is the same with dhihar using any prohibited relations of
fosterage and ancestry."
Malik said, "Women have no dhihar."
Malik said that he had heard that the commentary on the word
of Allah, the Blessed, the Exalted, "Those of you who pronounce the
dhihar about their wives, and then retract what they have said," (Sura
56 ayat 3), was that a man pronounced dhihar on his wife and then
decided to keep her and have intercourse with her. If he decided on
that, he must do kaffara. If he divorced her and did not decide to
retract his dhihar of her and to keep her and have intercourse with
her, there would be no kaffara incumbent on him.
Maliksaid,
"If he marries her after that, he does not touch her until he has
completed the kaffara of pronouncing dhihar."
Malik said that
if a man who pronounced dhihar from his slave-girl wanted to have
intercourse with her, he had to do the kaffara of the dhihar before he
could sleep with her.
Malik said, "There is no ila in a man's
dhihar unless it is evident that he does not intend to retract his
dhihar."
Muwatta Malik Book 29, Hadith 25
The delegates of `Abdul Qais came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said, "The pagans of the tribe of Mudar
intervene between you and us therefore we cannot come to you except in the Holy months. So please
order us to do something good (Religious deeds) by which we may enter Paradise (by acting on them)
and we may inform our people whom we have left behind to observe it." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I order
you to do four things and forbid you from four things: I order you to believe in Allah. Do you know
what is meant by belief in Allah? It is to testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah,
to offer prayers perfectly, to give Zakat, and to give Al-Khumus (one-fifth of the war booty) (in
Allah's Cause). And I forbid you four things, (i.e., Do not drink alcoholic drinks) Ad-Dubba, An-
Naqir, (pitched water skins), Az-Zuruf, Al-Muzaffat and Al--Hantam (names of utensils used for the
preparation of alcoholic drinks)." (See Hadith No. 50, Vol. 1)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 97, Hadith 181
There passed a bier (being carried by people) and it was lauded in good terms. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. And there passed a bier and it was condemned in bad words. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. 'Umar said: May my father and mother be ransom for you! There passed a bier and it was praised in good terms, and you said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. And there passed a bier and it was condemned in bad words, and you said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) said: He whom you praised in good terms, Paradise has become certain for him, and he whom you condemned in bad words, Hell has become certain for him. You are Allah's witnesses in the earth, you are Allah's witnesses in the earth, you are Allah's witnesses in the earth.
Sahih Muslim Book 11, Hadith 78
O, it is you; you have grown young. May you not advance in years! That slave-girl returned to Umm Sulaim weeping. Umm Sulaim said: O daughter, what is the matter with you? She said: Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) has invoked curse upon me that I should not grow in age and thus I would never grow in age, or she said, in my (length) of life. Umm Sulaim went out wrapping her head-dress hurriedly until she met Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). He said to her: Umm Sulaim, what is the matter with you? She said: Allah's Apostle, you invoked curse upon my orphan girl. He said: Umm Sulaim, what is that? She said: She (the orphan girl) states you have cursed her saying that she might not grow in age or grow in life. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) smiled and then said: Umm Sulaim, don't you know that I have made this term with my Lord. And the term with my Lord is that I said to Him: 1 am a human being and I am pleased just as a human being is pleased and I lose temper just as a human being loses temper, so for any person from amongst my Ummah whom I curse and he in no way deserves it, let that, O Lord, be made a source of purification and purity and nearness to (Allah) on the Day of Resurrection.
Sahih Muslim Book 45, Hadith 124
When the delegates of the tribe of Hawazin after embracing Islam, came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), he got up.
They appealed to him to return their properties and their captives. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to them, "The
most beloved statement to me is the true one. So, you have the option of restoring your properties or
your captives, for I have delayed distributing them." The narrator added, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) c had been
waiting for them for more than ten days on his return from Taif. When they realized that Allah's
Apostle would return to them only one of two things, they said, "We choose our captives." So, Allah's
Apostle got up in the gathering of the Muslims, praised Allah as He deserved, and said, "Then after!
These brethren of yours have come to you with repentance and I see it proper to return their captives
to them. So, whoever amongst you likes to do that as a favor, then he can do it, and whoever of you
wants to stick to his share till we pay him from the very first booty which Allah will give us then he
can do so." The people replied, "We agree to give up our shares willingly as a favor for Allah's
Apostle." Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "We don't know who amongst you has agreed and who hasn't. Go
back and your chiefs may tell us your opinion." So, all of them returned and their chiefs discussed the
matter with them and then they (i.e. their chiefs) came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to tell him that they (i.e. the
people) had given up their shares gladly and willingly.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 40, Hadith 8
'We came to Jabir and asked him about the Hajj of the Prophet. He told us that the Messenger of Allah said: "Had I known when I set out what I know now, I would have brought the Jadi (sacrificial animal ) with me and I would not have made it 'Umrah. Whoever does not have a Jadi with him, let him exit Ihram and make it 'Umrah," 'Ali may Allah be ;eased with him, came from Yemen with a Hadi, and the Messenger of Allah brought a Hadi from Al-Madinah, Fatimah had put on a dyed garment and applied kohl to her eyes, and he ('Ali) said: "I went to the Prophet to complain about that and find out whether she could do that, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Fatima had put on a dyed garment and applied kohl to her eyes, and she said, the Messenger of Allah told me to do that. 'He said: 'She is telling the truth, she is telling the truth, I told her to do that
