Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said heard Said ibn
al-Musayyab say, "Keeping gold and silver out of circulation is part
of working corruption in the land."
Malik said, "There is no
harm in buying gold with silver or silver with gold without measuring
if it is unminted or a piece of jewellery which has been made. Counted
dirhams and counted dinars should not be bought without reckoning
until they are known and counted. To abandon number and buy them at
random would only be to speculate. That is not part of the business
transactions of Muslims. As for what is weighed of unminted objects
and jewellery, there is no harm in buying such things without
measuring. To buy them without measuring is like buying wheat, dried
dates, and such food-stuffs, which are sold without measuring, even
though things like them are measured "
Malik spoke about
buying a Qur'an, a sword or a signet ring which had some gold or
silver work on it with dinars or dirhams. He said, "The value of the
object bought with dinars, which has gold in it is looked at. If the
value of the gold is up to one-third of the price, it is permitted and
there is no harm in it if the sale is hand to hand and there is no
deferment in it. When something is bought with silver which has silver
in it, the value is looked at. If the value of the silver is one-
third, it is permitted and there is no harm in it if the sale is hand
to hand. That is still the way of doing things among us."
Muwatta Malik Book 31, Hadith 37
“Think not of
those
as dead who are killed in the way of Allah. Nay, they are alive,
with
their Lord, and they have provision,” that he said: “We
asked about that, and (the Prophet (ﷺ)) said: ‘Their souls are
like
green birds that fly wherever they wish in Paradise, then they
come
back to lamps suspended from the Throne. While they were like
that,
your Lord looked at them and said, “Ask me for whatever you
want.”
They said: “O Lord, what should we ask You for when we can
fly
wherever we wish in Paradise?” When they saw that they would
not be
left alone until they had asked for something, they said: “We
ask You
to return our souls to our bodies in the world so that we may
fight
for Your sake (again).” When He saw that they would not ask
for
anything but that, they were left alone.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 24, Hadith 49
' Aisha said, "We set out with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)s in the months of Hajj, and (in) the nights of Hajj, and
at the time and places of Hajj and in a state of Hajj. We dismounted at Sarif (a village six miles from
Mecca). The Prophet (ﷺ) then addressed his companions and said, "Anyone who has not got the Hadi and
likes to do Umra instead of Hajj may do so (i.e. Hajj-al-Tamattu`) and anyone who has got the Hadi
should not finish the Ihram after performing ' `Umra). (i.e. Hajj-al-Qiran). Aisha added, "The
companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) obeyed the above (order) and some of them (i.e. who did not have Hadi)
finished their Ihram after Umra." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and some of his companions were resourceful and
had the Hadi with them, they could not perform Umra (alone) (but had to perform both Hajj and Umra
with one Ihram). Aisha added, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to me and saw me weeping and said, "What
makes you weep, O Hantah?" I replied, "I have heard your conversation with your companions and I
cannot perform the Umra." He asked, "What is wrong with you?' I replied, ' I do not offer the prayers
(i.e. I have my menses).' He said, ' It will not harm you for you are one of the daughters of Adam, and
Allah has written for you (this state) as He has written it for them. Keep on with your intentions for
Hajj and Allah may reward you that." Aisha further added, "Then we proceeded for Hajj till we
reached Mina and I became clean from my menses.
Then I went out from Mina and performed Tawaf round the Ka`ba." Aisha added, "I went along with
the Prophet (ﷺ) in his final departure (from Hajj) till he dismounted at Al-Muhassab (a valley outside
Mecca), and we too, dismounted with him." He called ' `Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr and said to
him, ' Take your sister outside the sanctuary of Mecca and let her assume Ihram for ' `Umra, and when
you had finished ' `Umra, return to this place and I will wait for you both till you both return to me.' " '
Aisha added, " So we went out of the sanctuary of Mecca and after finishing from the ' `Umra and the
Tawaf we returned to the Prophet (ﷺ) at dawn. He said, 'Have you performed the ' `Umra?' We replied in
the affirmative. So he announced the departure amongst his companions and the people set out for the
journey, and the Prophet: too left for Medina.''
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 25, Hadith 46
"My wife and I stopped at Baqi Al-Gharqad, and my wife said to me: 'Go to the Messenger of Allah and ask him to give us something to eat. ' So I went to the Messenger of Allah and found a man with him asking him (for something), and the Messenger of Allah was saying: 'I do not have anything to give to you.' The man turned away angrily, saying: 'You only give to those you want. 'The Messenger of Allah said: 'He is angry with me because I did not have anything to give him. Whoever asks of you and he has an Uqiyah or its equivalent, then he has been too demanding in asking."' Al-Asadi said: I said: 'Our milch-camel is worth more than an Uqiyah, 'and an Uqiyah is forty Dirhams. "So I went back and did not ask him for anything. Then the Messenger of Allah got some barley and raisins after that, and he gave us a share of them, until Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, made us independent of means."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 23, Hadith 162
Ibn Shihab said “’Urwah bin Al Zubair asked A’ishah , wife of the Prophet(ﷺ) about the Qur’anic verse “And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you.” She said “O my nephew, this means the female orphan who is under the protection of her guardian and she holds a share in his property and her property and beauty attracts him; so her guardian intends to marry her without doing justice to her in respect of her dower and he gives her the same amount of dower as others give her. They (i.e., the guardians) were prohibited to marry them except that they do justice to them and pay them their maximum customary dower and they were asked to marry women other than them (i.e., the orphans) who seem good to them. ‘Urwah reported that A’ishah said “The people then consulted the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) about women after revelation of this verse. Thereupon Allaah the Exalted sent down the verse “They consult thee concerning women. Say Allaah giveth you decree concerning them and the scripture which hath been recited unto you(giveth decree) concerning female orphans unto whom you give not that which is ordained for them though you desire to marry them. “ She said “The mention made by Allaah about the Scripture recited to them refers to the former verse in which Allaah has said “And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you.” A’ishah said “The pronouncement of Allaah , the Exalted in the latter verse “though you desire to marry them” means the disinterest of one of you in marrying a female orphan who was under his protection, but she said little property and beauty. So they were prohibited to marry them for their interest in the property and beauty of the female orphans due to their disinterest in themselves except that they do justice )to them). The narrator Yunus said “Rabi’ah said explain the Qur’anic verse “And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans” means “Leave them if you fear (that you will not do justice to them), for I have made four women lawful for you.”
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 12, Hadith 23
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to us while we were in a gathering, "Give me the oath (Pledge of allegiance for:
(1) Not to join anything in worship along with Allah, (2) Not to steal, (3) Not to commit illegal sexual
intercourse, (4) Not to kill your children, (5) Not to accuse an innocent person (to spread such an
accusation among people), (6) Not to be disobedient (when ordered) to do good deeds. The Prophet (ﷺ)
added: Whoever amongst you fulfill his pledge, his reward will be with Allah, and whoever commits
any of those sins and receives the legal punishment in this world for that sin, then that punishment will
be an expiation for that sin, and whoever commits any of those sins and Allah does not expose him,
then it is up to Allah if He wishes He will punish him or if He wishes, He will forgive him." So we
gave the Pledge for that. (See Hadith No. 17, Vol. 1)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 93, Hadith 73
I witnessed the `Id-al-Fitr prayer with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , Abu Bakr, `Umar and `Uthman; and all of
them offered it before delivering the sermon... and then delivered the sermon. Once the Prophet (after
completing the prayer and the sermon) came down, as if I am now looking at him waving at the men
with his hand to sit down, and walked through them till he, along with Bilal, reached (the rows of) the
women. Then he recited: 'O Prophet! When believing women come to you to take the oath of
allegiance that they will not worship anything other than Allah, will not steal, will not commit illegal
sexual intercourse, will not kill their children, and will not utter slander, intentionally forging
falsehood (by making illegal children belonging to their husbands)'....(60.12) Having finished, he
said, 'Do you agree to that?" One lady, other than whom none replied the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" (The, sub-narrator, Al-Hasan did not know who the lady was.) Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said
to them: "Will you give alms?" Thereupon Bilal spread out his garment and the women started
throwing big rings and small rings into Bilal's garment. (See Hadith No. 95 vol.2)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 415
Malik related to me from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman from another
of the ulama of that time that Abu Musa al-Ashari came and asked
permission from Umar ibn al-Khattab to enter. He asked permission
three times, and then went away Umar ibn al-Khattab sent after him and
said, "What's wrong with you? Why didn't you come in?" Abu Musa said,
"I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, say, 'Ask permission to enter three times. If you are given
permission, then enter. If not, go away.' ''Umar said, "Who can
confirm this? If you do not bring me someone to confirm it, I will do
such-and-such to you."
Abu Musa went out until he came to an
assembly in the mosque which was called the Majlis-al-Ansar. He said,
"I told Umar ibn al-Khattab that I heard the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'Ask permission three times.
If you are given permission, then enter. If not, go away.' Umar said,
'If you do not bring me someone who can confirm it, I will do such-
and-such to you'. If any of you have heard that, let him come with
me.' " They said to Abu Said al-Khudri, "Go with him". Abu Said was
the youngest of them. He went with him and told Umar ibn al-Khattab
about that."
Umar ibn al-Khattab said to Abu Musa, "I did not
suspect you, but I feared lest people forge sayings of the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."
Muwatta Malik Book 54, Hadith 3
I said to the Prophet, "We will be facing the enemy tomorrow and we have no knives (for
slaughtering)' He said, "If you slaughter the animal with anything that causes its blood to flow out,
and if Allah's Name is mentioned on slaughtering it, eat of it, unless the killing instrument is a tooth or
nail. I will tell you why: As for the tooth, it is a bone; and as for the nail, it is the knife of Ethiopians."
The quick ones among the people got the war booty while the Prophet (ﷺ) was behind the people. So they
placed the cooking pots on the fire, but the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered the cooking pots to be turned upside
down. Then he distributed (the war booty) among them, considering one camel as equal to ten sheep.
Then a camel belonging to the first party of people ran away and they had no horses with them, so a
man shot it with an arrow whereby Allah stopped it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Of these animals there are
some which are as wild as wild beasts. So, if anyone of them runs away like this, do like this (shoot it
with an arrow).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 72, Hadith 68
"The Messenger of Allah {s.a.w} narrated two narrations to us, one of which I have seen {happening} and I am waiting for the other. He narrated that (in the beginning) trust was preserved in the roots of the hearts of men, then the Qur'an was revealed, and they learned it from the Qur'an, and then they learned it from the Sunnah. Then he narrated to us about the disappearance of trust, saying, 'A man will go to sleep whereupon trust will be taken away from his heart, and only its trace will remain, like speckles. He then will sleep, whereupon the remainder of the trust will also be taken away and trace will remain like a blister, like an ember that you roll on your feet, it causes pain and you see it swollen while it contains nothing.' Then he took a pebble and rolled it over his leg. He said: 'So there will come a day when people will deal in business with each other, but there will hardly be any trustworthy persons among them, such that it would be said that in such and such a tribe, there is such and such person, who is honest, and until a man will be admired for his strength, intelligence, and good manners, although indeed he will not have faith equal to a mustard seed in his heart."' He (Hudhaifah) added: "There came upon me a time when I did not mind dealing with anyone of you, for if he was a Muslim, his religion would prevent him from cheating me, and if was a Jew or a Christian, his Muslim ruler would prevent him from cheating me; but today I cannot deal except with so-and-so and so-and-so."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 33, Hadith 22
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that A'isha, the
wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A
man asked permission to come in to see the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace. I was with him in the house and
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
'He is an evil member of his tribe.' Then the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave him permission."
A'isha continued, "It was not long before I heard the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, laughing with him.
When the man left, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, you said what you said
about him, and then before long you were laughing with him.' The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied,
'Among the most evil of people is the one whom people are cautious
with because of his evil.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 47, Hadith 4
"I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and a man was standing and praying. When he bowed, prostrated and recited the tashahhud, he supplicated, and in his supplication he said: "Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anna lakal-hamd, lailaha illa ant, al-mannanu badi'us-samawati wal-ard, ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram! Ya hayyu ya qayyum! Inni as'aluka. (O Allah, indeed I ask You since all praise is due to You, there is none worthy of worship but You, the Bestower, the Creator of the heavens and earth, O Possessor of majesty and honor, O Ever-living, O-Eternal, I ask of You.)' The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Do you know what he has supplicated with?' They said: "Allah (SWT) and His Messenger know best." He said: 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, he called upon Allah by His greatest Name, which, if He is called by it, He responds, and if He is asked by it, He gives.'"
