That while he was included in a delegation of Quraish staying with Muawiya, Muawiya heard that
`Abdullah bin `Amr had said that there would be a king from Qahtan tribe, whereupon he became very
angry. He stood up, and after glorifying and praising Allah as He deserved, said, "To proceed, I have
come to know that some of you men are narrating things which are neither in Allah's Book, nor has
been mentioned by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . Such people are the ignorant among you. Beware of such vain
desires that mislead those who have them. I have heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, 'This matter (of the
caliphate) will remain with the Quraish, and none will rebel against them, but Allah will throw him
down on his face as long as they stick to the rules and regulations of the religion (Islam).'"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 93, Hadith 3
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az-
Zubayr that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari said that he had heard Umar
ibn al-Khattab say, "I heard Hisham ibn Hakim ibn Hizam reciting Surat
al-Furqan (Sura 25) differently from me, and it was the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who had recited it to
me. I was about to rush up to him but I granted him a respite until he
had finished his prayer. Then I grabbed him by his cloak and took him
to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
and said, 'Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surat al-
Furqan differently from the way you recited it to me.' The Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Let him go.'
Then he said, 'Recite, Hisham,' and Hisham recited as I had heard him
recite. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, 'It was sent down like that.' Then he said to me,
'Recite' and I recited the sura, and he said, 'It was sent down like
that. This Qur'an was sent down in seven (different) ways, so recite
from it whatever is easy for you .' "
Muwatta Malik Book 15, Hadith 6
Time has completed a cycle and come to the state of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is constituted of twelve months, of which four are sacred; three of them consecutive, viz. Dhu'l-Qa'da, Dhu'l- Hijja and Muharram, and also Rajab the month of Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha'ban. He (the Holy Prophet) then said: which month is this? We said Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) remained silent for some time until we thought that he would give it a name other than that (by which it was known). He said: Is it not Dha'l-Hijja? We said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Which city is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the Holy Prophety remained silent until we thought that he would give it another name. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Is it not the Balda (the city of Mecca)? We said: Yes. He said: What day is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the Holy Prophet) remained silent until we thought that he would give it another name. He said: Is it not the Day of Sacrifice? We said: Allah's Messenger. yes. Thereupon he said: Your blood, your property (Muhammad, one of the narrators, said: I think, he also said this) and your honour are sacred to you like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this city of yours, and in this month of yours. You will soon meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not turn after me unbelievers (or misguided), some of you striking the necks of the others. Behold I let him who is present convey to him who is absent, for many a one whom a message is conveyed has a more retentive memory than one who hears. He again said: Behold! have I not delivered (the message) to you? This hadith has been narrated through another chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation of words.
Sahih Muslim Book 28, Hadith 42
I heard Anas bin Malik saying, "On a Friday a person entered the main Mosque through the gate
facing the pulpit while Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutba. The man stood in front of Allah's
Apostle and said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; so please pray
to Allah for rain.' " Anas added, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) raised both his hands and said, 'O Allah!
Bless us with rain! O Allah! Bless us with rain! O Allah! Bless us with rain!' " Anas added, "By Allah,
we could not see any trace of cloud in the sky and there was no building or a house between us and
(the mountains of) Sila." Anas added, "A heavy cloud like a shield appeared from behind it (i.e. Sila'
Mountain). When it came in the middle of the sky, it spread and then rained." Anas further said, "By
Allah! We could not see the sun for a week. Next Friday a person entered through the same gate and
at that time Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was delivering the Friday's Khutba. The man stood in front of him and
said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The livestock are dying and the roads are cut off, please pray to Allah to
withhold rain.' " Anas added, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) I raised both his hands and said, 'O Allah! Round about
us and not on us. O Allah! On the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, in the valleys and on the
places where trees grow.' So the rain stopped and we came out walking in the sun." Sharik asked Anas
whether it was the same person who had asked for the rain (the last Friday). Anas replied that he did
not know.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 15, Hadith 8
While I was at Yemen, I met two men from Yemen called Dhu Kala and Dhu `Amr, and I started
telling them about Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Dhu `Amr said to me, "If what you are saying about your friend
(i.e. the Prophet) is true, then he has died three days ago." Then both of them accompanied me to
Medina, and when we had covered some distance on the way to Medina, we saw some riders coming
from Medina. We asked them and they said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has died and Abu Bakr has been
appointed as the Caliph and the people are in a good state.' Then they said, "Tell your friend (Abu
Bakr) that we have come (to visit him), and if Allah will, we will come again." So they both returned
to Yemen. When I told Abu Bakr their statement, he said to me, "I wish you had brought them (to
me)." Afterwards I met Dhu `Amr, and he said to me, "O Jarir! You have done a favor to me and I am
going to tell you something, i.e. you, the nation of 'Arabs, will remain prosperous as long as you
choose and appoint another chief whenever a former one is dead. But if authority is obtained by the
power of the sword, then the rulers will become kings who will get angry, as kings get angry, and will
be delighted as kings get delighted."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 385
'Alqama led us in the noon prayer and be offered five rak'ahs; when the prayer was complete, the people said to him: Abu Shibl, you have offered five rak'ahs. He said: No, I have not done that. They said: Yes (you said five rak'ahs). He (the narrator) said: And I was sitting in a corner among people and I was just a boy. I (also) said: Yes, you have offered five (rak'ahs). He said to me: O, one-eyed, do you say the same thing? I said: Yes. Upon this he turned (his face) and performed two prostrations and then gave salutations, and then reported 'Abdullah as saying: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in prayer and offered five rak'ahs. And as he turned away the people began to whisper amongst themselves. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What is the matter with you? They said: Has the prayer been extended? He said: No. They said: You have in fact said five rak'ahs. He (the Holy Prophet) then turned his back (and faced the Qibla) and performed two prostrations and then gave salutations and further said: Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget. Ibn Numair made this addition:" When any one of you forgets, he must perform two prostrations."
Sahih Muslim Book 5, Hadith 121
Either the owner of the
wares says to the borrower, 'Take these wares and sell them. Buy and
sell with the capital realized according to qirad.' The investor
stipulates increase for himself from the sale of his goods and what
relieves him of expenses in selling it. Or else he says, 'Barter with
these goods and sell. When you are through, buy for me the like of my
goods which I gave you. If there is increase, it is between you and
me. 'It may happen that the investor gives the goods to the agent at a
time in which they are in demand and expensive, and then the agent
returns them while they are cheap and he might have bought them for
only a third of the original price or even less than that. The agent
then has a profit of half the amount by which the price of the wares
has decreased as his portion of the profit. Or he might take the wares
at a time when their price is low, and make use of them until he has a
lot of money. Then those wares become expensive and their price rises
when he returns them, so he buys them for all that he has so that all
his work and concern have been in vain. This is an uncertain
transaction and is not good. If, however, that is not known until it
has happened, then the wage an agent in qirad would be paid for
selling that, is looked at and he is given it for his concern. Then
the money is qirad from the day the money became cash and collected as
coin and it is returned as a qirad like that."
Muwatta Malik Book 32, Hadith 7
"When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died and Abu Bakr (was appointed Khalifah) after him, and some of the 'Arabs disbelieved, 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'O Abu Bakr, how can you fight the people when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship except Allah.) Whoever says La ilaha illallah, his life and his property are safe from me, except for its right, and his reckoning will be with Allah?'" Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "I will surely fight those who separate prayer and Zakah, for Zakah is what is due on wealth. By Allah, if they withhold from me a small she-goat that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) I will fight them for withholding it.' ('Umar said) 'By Allah, when I realized that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, had opened the chest of Abu Bakr to fighting, then I knew that it was the truth.'" The wording is that of Ahmad.
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 25, Hadith 8
We went out with the Prophet (ﷺ) to a garden called Ash-Shaut till we reached two walls between which
we sat down. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Sit here," and went in (the garden). The Jauniyya (a lady from Bani
Jaun) had been brought and lodged in a house in a date-palm garden in the home of Umaima bint An-
Nu`man bin Sharahil, and her wet nurse was with her. When the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon her, he said to
her, "Give me yourself (in marriage) as a gift." She said, "Can a princess give herself in marriage to an
ordinary man?" The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hand to pat her so that she might become tranquil. She said, "I
seek refuge with Allah from you." He said, "You have sought refuge with One Who gives refuge.
Then the Prophet (ﷺ) came out to us and said, "O Abu Usaid! Give her two white linen dresses to wear
and let her go back to her family."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 68, Hadith 5
that Malik bin Aus said, "I was in need of change for one-hundred Dinars. Talha bin 'Ubaidullah
called me and we discussed the matter, and he agreed to change (my Dinars). He took the gold pieces
in his hands and fidgeted with them, and then said, "Wait till my storekeeper comes from the forest."
`Umar was listening to that and said, "By Allah! You should not separate from Talha till you get the
money from him, for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'The selling of gold for gold is Riba (usury) except if the
exchange is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and similarly, the selling of wheat for wheat is
Riba (usury) unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and the selling of barley for barley is
usury unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates, is usury unless it is from
hand to hand and equal in amount"
