`Umar bin Al-Khattab departed for Sham and when he reached Sargh, the commanders of the
(Muslim) army, Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah and his companions met him and told him that an epidemic
had broken out in Sham. `Umar said, "Call for me the early emigrants." So `Umar called them,
consulted them and informed them that an epidemic had broken out in Sham.
Those people differed in their opinions. Some of them said, "We have come out for a purpose and we
do not think that it is proper to give it up," while others said (to `Umar), "You have along with you.
other people and the companions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) so do not advise that we take them to this
epidemic." `Umar said to them, "Leave me now." Then he said, "Call the Ansar for me." I called them
and he consulted them and they followed the way of the emigrants and differed as they did. He then
said to them, Leave me now," and added, "Call for me the old people of Quraish who emigrated in the
year of the Conquest of Mecca."
I called them and they gave a unanimous opinion saying, "We advise that you should return with the
people and do not take them to that (place) of epidemic." So `Umar made an announcement, "I will
ride back to Medina in the morning, so you should do the same." Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah said (to
`Umar), "Are you running away from what Allah had ordained?" `Umar said, "Would that someone
else had said such a thing, O Abu 'Ubaida! Yes, we are running from what Allah had ordained to what
Allah has ordained. Don't you agree that if you had camels that went down a valley having two places,
one green and the other dry, you would graze them on the green one only if Allah had ordained that,
and you would graze them on the dry one only if Allah had ordained that?"
At that time `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf, who had been absent because of some job, came and said, "I
have some knowledge about this. I have heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, 'If you hear about it (an
outbreak of plague) in a land, do not go to it; but if plague breaks out in a country where you are
staying, do not run away from it.' " `Umar thanked Allah and returned to Medina.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 76, Hadith 44
AbulJawza' said: A man who attended the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) narrated to me (it is thought that he was Abdullah ibn Amr): The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me: Come to me tomorrow; I shall give you something, I shall give you something, I shall reward you something, I shall donate something to you. I thought that he would give me some present.
He said (to me when I came to him): When the day declines, stand up and pray four rak'ahs. He then narrated something similar.
This version adds: Do not stand until you glorify Allah ten times, and praise Him ten times, and exalt Him ten times, and say, "There is no god but Allah" ten times. Then you should do that in four rak'ahs. If you are the greatest sinner on earth, you will be forgiven (by Allah) on account of this (prayer).
I asked: If I cannot pray this the appointed hour, (what should I do)? He replied: Pray that by night or by day (at any time).
Abu Dawud said: Habban b. Hilal is the maternal uncle of Hilal al-Ra'i.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by al-Mustamir b. al-Riyyan from Ibn al-Jawza' from 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr without referring to the Prophet (ﷺ), - narrated as a statement of 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr himself (mauquf). This has also been narrated by Rawh b. al-Musayyab, and Ja'far b. Sulaiman from 'Amr b. Malik al-Nakri from Abu al-Jauza' from Ibn 'Abbas as his own statement (and not the statement of the Prophet). But the version of Rawh has the words: "The tradition of the Prophet (ﷺ)."
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 5, Hadith 49
Fatima sent somebody to Abu Bakr asking him to give her her
inheritance from the Prophet (ﷺ) from what Allah had given to His Apostle
through Fai (i.e. booty gained without fighting). She asked for the
Sadaqa (i.e. wealth assigned for charitable purposes) of the Prophet (ﷺ)
at Medina, and Fadak, and what remained of the Khumus (i.e.,
one-fifth) of the Khaibar booty. Abu Bakr said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said,
'We (Prophets), our property is not inherited, and whatever we leave
is Sadaqa, but Muhammad's Family can eat from this property, i.e.
Allah's property, but they have no right to take more than the food
they need.' By Allah! I will not bring any change in dealing with the
Sadaqa of the Prophet (and will keep them) as they used to be observed
in his (i.e. the Prophet's) life-time, and I will dispose with it as
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to do," Then 'Ali said, "I testify that None has
the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is His
Apostle," and added, "O Abu Bakr! We acknowledge your superiority."
Then he (i.e. 'Ali) mentioned their own relationship to Allah's
Apostle and their right. Abu Bakr then spoke saying, "By Allah in
Whose Hands my life is. I love to do good to the relatives of Allah's
Apostle rather than to my own relatives"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 62, Hadith 61
The Mesenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever says: ‘There is none worthy of worship except Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists and to Him belongs the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is Powerful over all things, (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa yumītu, wa huwa `alā kulli shay’in qadīr)’ a hundred times in a day, it will be for him the equivalent of freeing ten slaves, and there shall be written for him a hundred good deeds, and a hundred bad deeds shall be wiped out for him, and it will be a protection for him from Shaitan on that day, until he reaches the evening. And none has brought better than it, except for one who has done more than that.” And with this chain, from the Prophet (ﷺ), that he said: “Whoever says: ‘Glory is to Allah, and with His Praise (Subḥān Allāh, wa biḥamdih)’ a hundred times, his sins are forgiven, even if they were more than the foam of the sea.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 99
'Uyaina bin Hisn bin Hudhaifa came and stayed with his nephew Al-Hurr bin Qais who was one of
those whom `Umar used to keep near him, as the Qurra' (learned men knowing Qur'an by heart) were
the people of `Umar's meetings and his advisors whether they were old or young. 'Uyaina said to his
nephew, "O son of my brother! You have an approach to this chief, so get for me the permission to see
him." Al-Hurr said, "I will get the permission for you to see him." So Al-Hurr asked the permission
for 'Uyaina and `Umar admitted him. When 'Uyaina entered upon him, he said, "Beware! O the son of
Al-Khattab! By Allah, you neither give us sufficient provision nor judge among us with justice."
Thereupon `Umar became so furious that he intended to harm him, but Al-Hurr said, "O chief of the
Believers! Allah said to His Prophet: "Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; and leave (don't
punish) the foolish." (7.199) and this (i.e. 'Uyaina) is one of the foolish." By Allah, `Umar did not
overlook that Verse when Al-Hurr recited it before him; he observed (the orders of) Allah's Book
strictly.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 164
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from
his father that Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman told him that Umm Sulaym
bint Milhan asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, for advice one time when she had begun menstruating,
or had given birth to a child after she had done tawaf al-ifada on the
Day of Sacrifice. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, gave her permission to leave.
Malik said, "A
woman menstruating at Mina stays until she has done tawaf of the
House. There is no escape from that for her. If she has already done
the tawaf al-ifada and she starts to menstruate afterwards, she may
leave for her country, since permission for the menstruating women to
leave has been transmitted to us from the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace."
He added, "If a woman
starts her period at Mina before she does the tawaf al-ifada, and the
period lasts longer than usual, she has to stay longer than the time
that bleeding would usually detain women."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 241
I participated in a Ghazwa along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) The Prophet (ﷺ) met me (on the way) while I was
riding a camel of ours used for irrigation and it had got so tired that it could hardly walk. The Prophet (ﷺ)
asked me, "What is wrong with the camel?" I replied, "It has got tired." So. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came from
behind it and rebuked it and prayed for it so it started surpassing the other camels and going ahead of
them. Then he asked me, "How do you find your camel (now)?" I replied, "I find it quite well, now as
it has received your blessings." He said, "Will you sell it to me?" I felt shy (to refuse his offer) though
it was the only camel for irrigation we had. So, I said, "Yes." He said, "Sell it to me then." I sold it to
him on the condition that I should keep on riding it till I reached Medina. Then I said, "O Allah's
Apostle! I am a bridegroom," and requested him to allow me to go home. He allowed me, and I set out
for Medina before the people till I reached Medina, where I met my uncle, who asked me about the
camel and I informed him all about it and he blamed me for that. When I took the permission of
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) he asked me whether I had married a virgin or a matron and I replied that I had
married a matron. He said, "Why hadn't you married a virgin who would have played with you, and
you would have played with her?" I replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! My father died (or was martyred) and
I have some young sisters, so I felt it not proper that I should marry a young girl like them who would
neither teach them manners nor serve them. So, I have married a matron so that she may serve them
and teach them manners." When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) arrived in Medina, I took the camel to him the next
morning and he gave me its price and gave me the camel itself as well.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 56, Hadith 176
"The Messenger of Allah (saas) never abandoned these supplications, every morning and evening: Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahum-mastur 'awrati, wa amin raw'ati wahfazni min bayni yadayya, wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa 'audhu bika an ughtala min tahti (O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religious and my worldly affairs. O Allah, conceal my faults, calm my fears, and protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in You from being taken unaware from beneath me)." Waki' (one of the narrators, explaining) said: "Meaning Al-Khasf (disgrace)."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 34, Hadith 45
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Ibn Wala
al-Misri asked Abdullah ibn Abbas about what is squeezed from the
grapes. Ibn Abbas replied, "A man gave the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, a small water-skin of wine. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to
him, 'Don't you know that Allah has made it haram?' He said, 'No.'
Then a man at his side whispered to him. The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked what he had whispered, and
the man replied, 'I told him to sell it.' The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'The One who made drinking
it haram has made selling it haram.' The man then opened the water-
skins and poured out what was in them ."
Muwatta Malik Book 42, Hadith 17
That he heard Marwan bin Al-Hakam and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama relating one of the events that
happened to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in the `Umra of Al-Hudaibiya. They said, "When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
concluded the truce with Suhail bin `Amr on the day of Al-Hudaibiya, one of the conditions which
Suhail bin `Amr stipulated, was his saying (to the Prophet), "If anyone from us (i.e. infidels) ever
comes to you, though he has embraced your religion, you should return him to us, and should not
interfere between us and him." Suhail refused to conclude the truce with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) except on
this condition. The believers disliked this condition and got disgusted with it and argued about it. But
when Suhail refused to conclude the truce with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) except on that condition, Allah's
Apostle concluded it. Accordingly, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then returned Abu Jandal bin Suhail to his father,
Suhail bin `Amr, and returned every man coming to him from them during that period even if he was a
Muslim. The believing women Emigrants came (to Medina) and Um Kulthum, the daughter of `Uqba
bin Abi Mu'ait was one of those who came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and she was an adult at that time. Her
relatives came, asking Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to return her to them, and in this connection, Allah revealed the
Verses dealing with the believing (women).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 221
I was sitting in a circle in the mosque of Medina and there was an old man, quite handsome. He was 'Abdullah b. Salim. He was telling good things to them (to the people sitting in that company). As he stood up (to depart) the people said: He who is desirous of looking at a person from amongst the people of Paradise should see him. I said: By Allah, I will follow him, and would try to know his residence. So I followed him and he walked on until he reached the outskirts of Medina. He then entered his house. I sought permission from him to get in, and he granted me the permission, saying: My nephew, what is the need (that has brought you here)? I said to him: As you stood up, I heard people say about you: He who is desirous of seeing a person from among the people of Paradise should look at him. So I became desirous of accompanying you. He ('Abdullah b. Salim) said: It is Allah Who knows best about the people of Paradise. I would, however, narrate to you as to why they said like it. (The story is) that while I was asleep (one night) there came to me a person (in the dream) who asked me to stand up. (So I stood up) and he caught hold of my hand and I walked along with him, and, lo, I found some paths on my left and I was about to set out upon them. Thereupon he said to me Do not set yourself on (them) for these are the paths of the leftists (denizens of Hell-fire). Then there were paths leading to the right side, whereupon he said: Set yourself on these paths. We came across a hill and he said to me: Climb up, and I attempted to climb up that I fell upon my buttocks. I made several attempts (but failed to succeed). He led until he came to a pillar (so high) that its upper end touched the sky and its base was in the earth. And there was a handhold at its upper end. He said to me Climb over it. I said: How can I climb upon it, as its upper end touches the sky? He cought hold of my hand and pushed me up and I found myself suspended with the handhold. He then struck the pillar and it fell down, but I remained attached to that handhold until it was morning (and the dream was thus over). I came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) and narrated it to him. He said: So far as the paths which you saw on your left are concerned, these are paths of the leftists (denizens of Hell) and the paths which you saw on your right, these are the paths of the rightists (the dwellers of Paradise) and the mountain represents the destination of the martyrs which you would not be able to attain. The pillar implies the pillar of Islam. and so far as the handhold is concerned, it implies the handhold of Islam, and you would hold to it fastly until you would meet death.
Sahih Muslim Book 44, Hadith 213
Allah's Messenger, I saw while I was sleeping during the night (this vision) that there was a canopy from which butter and honey were trickling and I also saw people collecting them in the palms of their hands, some more, some less, and I also saw a rope connecting the earth with the sky and I saw you catching hold of it and rising towards the heaven; then another person after you catching hold of it and rising towards (Heaven); then another person catching hold of it, but it was broken while it was rejoined for him and he also climbed up. Abu Bakr said: Allah's Messenger, may my father be sacrificed for you, by Allah, allow me to interpret it. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Well, give its interpretation. Thereupon Abu Bakr said: The canopy signifies the canopy of Islam and that what trickles out of it in the form of butter and honey is the Holy Qur'an and its sweetness and softness and what the people get hold of it in their palms implies major portion of the Qur'an or the small portion; and so far as the rope joining the sky with the earth is concerned, it is the Truth by which you stood (in the worldly life) and by which Allah would raise you (to Heaven). Then the person after you would take hold of it and he would also climb up with the help of it. Then another person would take hold of it and climb up with the help of it. Then another person would take hold of it and it would be broken; then it would be rejoined for him and he would climb up with the help of it. Allah's Messenger, may my father be taken as a ransom for you, tell me whether I have interpreted it correctly or I have made an error. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: You have interpreted a part of it correctly and you have erred in interpreting a part of it. Thereupon he said: Allah's Messenger, by Allah, tell me that part where I have committed an error. Thereupon he said: Don't take an oath.
