Many deputations came to Mu'awiya. This was in the month of Ramadan. We would prepare food for one another. Abu Huraira was one of those who frequently invited us to his house. I said: Should I not prepare food and invite them to my place? So I ordered meals to be prepared Then I met Abu Huraira in the evening and said: (You will have) your meals with me tonight. He said: You have forestalled me. I said: Yes, and invited them. (When they had finished with the meals) Abu Huraira said: Should I not tell yon a tradition from your traditions, O ye assembly of the Ansar? He then gave an account of the Conquest of Mecca and said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) advanced until he reached Mecca. He deputed Zubair on his right flank and Khalid on the left, and he despatched Abu Ubaida with the force that had no armour. They advanced to the interior of the valley. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in the midst of a large contingent of fighters. He saw me and said: Abu Huraira. I said: I am here at your call, Messenger of Allah I He said: Let no one come to me except the Ansar, so call to me the Ansar (only). Abu Huraira continued: So they gathered round him. The Quraish also gathered their ruffians and their (lowly) followers, and said: We send these forward. If they get anything, we shall be with them (to share it), and if misfortune befalls them, we shall pay (as compensation) whatever we are asked for. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said (to the Ansar): You see the ruffians and the (lowly) followers of the Quraish. And he indicated by (striking) one of his hands over the other that they should be killed and said: Meet me at as-Safa. Then we went on (and) if any one of us wanted that a certain person should be killed, he was killed, and none could offer any resistance. Abu Huraira continued: Then came Abu Sufyan and said: Messenger of Allah, the blood of the Quraish has become very cheap. There will be no Quraish from this day on. Then he (the Holy Prophet) said: Who enters the house of Abu Sufyan, he will be safe. Some of the Ansar whispered among themselves: (After all), love for his city and tenderness towards his relations have overpowered him. Abu Huraira said: (At this moment) revelation came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and when he was going to receive the Revelation, we understood it, and when he was (actually) receiving it, none of us would dare raise his eyes to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) until the revelation came to an end. When the revelation came to an end, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: O ye Assembly of the Ansar! They said: Here we are at your disposal, Messenger of Allah. He said: You were saying that love for his city and tenderness towards his people have overpowered this man. They said: So it was. He said: No, never. I am a bondman of God and His Messenger. I migrated towards God and towards you. I will live with you and will die with you. So, they (the Ansar) turned towards him in tears and they were saying: By Allah, we said what we said because of our tenacious attachment to Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Surely, Allah and His Messenger testify to your assertions and accept your apology. The narrator continued: People turned to the house of Abu Sufyan and people locked their doors. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) proceeded until he approached the (Black) Stone. He kissed it and circumambulated the Ka'ba. He reached near an idol by the side of the Ka'ba which was worshipped by the people. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had a bow in his hand, and he was holding it from a corner. When he came near the idol, he began to pierce its eyes with the bow and (while doing so) was saying: Truth has been established and falsehood has perished. When he had finished the circumambulation, he came to Safa', ascended it to a height from where he could see the Ka'ba, raised his hands (in prayer) and began to praise Allah and prayed what he wanted to pray.
Sahih Muslim Book 32, Hadith 104
"We went out as a delegation to the Prophet (ﷺ); we gave him our oath of allegiance and prayed with him. We told him that in our land there was a church that belonged to us. We asked him to give us the leftovers of his purification (Wudu' water). So he called for water, performed Wudu' and rinsed out his mouth, then he poured it into a vessel and said to us: 'Leave, and when you return to your land, demolish your church, and sprinkle this water on that place, and take it as a Masjid.' We said: 'Our land is far away and it is very hot; the water is far away and it is very hot; the water will dry up.' He said: 'Add more water to it, for that will only make it better.' So we left and when we came to our land we demolished our church, then we sprinkled the water on that place and took it as a Masjid, and we called the Adhan in it. The monk was a man from Tayy', and when he heard the Adhan, he said: 'It is a true call.' Then he headed toward one of the hills and we never saw him again."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 8, Hadith 14
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "On the Day of Resurrection the Believers will assemble and say, 'Let us ask
somebody to intercede for us with our Lord.' So they will go to Adam and say, 'You are the father of
all the people, and Allah created you with His Own Hands, and ordered the angels to prostrate to you,
and taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with your Lord, so that He may
relieve us from this place of ours.' Adam will say, 'I am not fit for this (i.e. intercession for you).' Then
Adam will remember his sin and feel ashamed thereof. He will say, 'Go to Noah, for he was the first
Apostle, Allah sent to the inhabitants of the earth.' They will go to him and Noah will say,
'I am not fit for this undertaking.' He will remember his appeal to his Lord to do what he had no
knowledge of, then he will feel ashamed thereof and will say, 'Go to the Khalil--r-Rahman (i.e.
Abraham).' They will go to him and he will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking. Go to Moses, the
slave to whom Allah spoke (directly) and gave him the Torah .' So they will go to him and he will say,
'I am not fit for this undertaking.' and he will mention (his) killing a person who was not a killer, and
so he will feel ashamed thereof before his Lord, and he will say, 'Go to Jesus, Allah's Slave, His
Apostle and Allah's Word and a Spirit coming from Him. Jesus will say, 'I am not fit for this
undertaking, go to Muhammad the Slave of Allah whose past and future sins were forgiven by Allah.'
So they will come to me and I will proceed till I will ask my Lord's Permission and I will be given
permission. When I see my Lord, I will fall down in Prostration and He will let me remain in that state
as long as He wishes and then I will be addressed.' (Muhammad!) Raise your head. Ask, and your
request will be granted; say, and your saying will be listened to; intercede, and your intercession will
be accepted.' I will raise my head and praise Allah with a saying (i.e. invocation) He will teach me,
and then I will intercede. He will fix a limit for me (to intercede for) whom I will admit into Paradise.
Then I will come back again to Allah, and when I see my Lord, the same thing will happen to me. And
then I will intercede and Allah will fix a limit for me to intercede whom I will let into Paradise, then I
will come back for the third time; and then I will come back for the fourth time, and will say, 'None
remains in Hell but those whom the Qur'an has imprisoned (in Hell) and who have been destined to an
eternal stay in Hell.' " (The compiler) Abu `Abdullah said: 'But those whom the Qur'an has imprisoned
in Hell,' refers to the Statement of Allah:
"They will dwell therein forever." (16.29)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 3
"The Messenger of Allah stopped at Arafat and said: 'This is Arafah and it is a place of standing. And all of Arafat is a place for standing.' Then he departed when the sun had set and took Usamah bin Zaid as a companion rider, and he was motioning with his hand as was his custom, and the people were striking (their camels) on the right and the left to try and catch them, so he said: 'O you people! Be calmm.' Then he came to Jama and performed the two Salat there combined. When the morning came, he went to Quzah and stood there and said: 'This is Quzah, and it is a place of standing, and all of Jama is a place for standing.' Then he departed until he arrived at Wadi Muhassir. Then he stuck his she-camel and she trotted until he passed the valley. Then he stopped and took Al-Fadl as a companion rider and went to the Jamrah to stone it. Then he went to Al-Manhar and said: 'This is Al-Manhar, and all of Mina is a place for sacrifice.' A young girl from Khath'am came to ask him for a verdict, she said: 'Indeed my father is an elderly man who has lived until Allah has made Hajj obligatory, so would he be rewarded if I perform Hajj for him? He said: 'Perform Hajj for your father.'" He said: "And he turned the neck of Al Fadl. So Al-Abbas said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Why did you turn the neck of your cousin?' He said: 'I saw a young man and a young woman, and they were not safe from Shaitan.' A man came to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! I performed (Tawaf) Al-Ifadah before shaving.' He said: 'Shave, and there is no harm'" - or: 'Clip and there is no harm'" He said: "Someone else came and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I did the sacrifice before stoning.' So he said: 'Stone, and there is no harm.'" He said: "Then he went to the House (Ka'bah) to perform Tawaf around it, then he went to Zamzam and said: 'O tribe of Abdul-Muttalib! If it were not that the people would rush upon you then I would remove it.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 9, Hadith 78
"My mother asked me: 'When is your planned time - meaning with the Prophet (ﷺ)?' So I said: 'I have not had a planned time to see him since such and such time.' She rebuked me, so I said to her: 'Let me go to the Prophet (ﷺ) so that I may perform Maghrib (prayer) with him, and ask him to seek forgiveness for you and I.' So I came to the Prophet (ﷺ), and I prayed Maghrib with him, then he prayed until he prayed Al-'Isha. Then he turned, and I followed him, and he heard my voice, and said: 'Who is this? Hudhaifah?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: "What is your need, may Allah forgive you and your mother?' He said: 'Indeed, this is an angel that never descended to the earth ever before tonight. He sought permission from his Lord to greet me with peace and to give me the glad tidings that Fatimah is the chief of the women of Paradise, and that Al-Hasan and Al-Husain are the chiefs of the youths of the people of Paradise.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 49, Hadith 180
Abu Bakr As-Siddiq sent for me when the people of Yamama had been killed (i.e., a number of the
Prophet's Companions who fought against Musailima). (I went to him) and found `Umar bin Al-
Khattab sitting with him. Abu Bakr then said (to me), "`Umar has come to me and said: "Casualties
were heavy among the Qurra' of the Qur'an (i.e. those who knew the Qur'an by heart) on the day of
the Battle of Yamama, and I am afraid that more heavy casualties may take place among the Qurra'
on other battlefields, whereby a large part of the Qur'an may be lost. Therefore I suggest, you (Abu
Bakr) order that the Qur'an be collected." I said to `Umar, "How can you do something which Allah's
Apostle did not do?" `Umar said, "By Allah, that is a good project." `Umar kept on urging me to
accept his proposal till Allah opened my chest for it and I began to realize the good in the idea which
`Umar had realized." Then Abu Bakr said (to me). 'You are a wise young man and we do not have any
suspicion about you, and you used to write the Divine Inspiration for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). So you should
search for (the fragmentary scripts of) the Qur'an and collect it in one book." By Allah If they had
ordered me to shift one of the mountains, it would not have been heavier for me than this ordering me
to collect the Qur'an. Then I said to Abu Bakr, "How will you do something which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did
not do?" Abu Bakr replied, "By Allah, it is a good project." Abu Bakr kept on urging me to accept his
idea until Allah opened my chest for what He had opened the chests of Abu Bakr and `Umar. So I
started looking for the Qur'an and collecting it from (what was written on) palme stalks, thin white
stones and also from the men who knew it by heart, till I found the last Verse of Surat at-Tauba
(Repentance) with Abi Khuzaima Al-Ansari, and I did not find it with anybody other than him. The
Verse is:
'Verily there has come unto you an Apostle (Muhammad) from amongst yourselves. It grieves him
that you should receive any injury or difficulty..(till the end of Surat-Baraa' (at-Tauba) (9.128-129).
Then the complete manuscripts (copy) of the Qur'an remained with Abu Bakr till he died, then with
`Umar till the end of his life, and then with Hafsa, the daughter of `Umar.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 66, Hadith 8
Abu Shuraih, Al-`Adawi said that he had said to `Amr bin Sa`id when he was sending the troops to
Mecca (to fight `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair), "O Chief! Allow me to tell you what Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said
on the day following the Conquest of Mecca. My ears heard that and my heart understood it
thoroughly and I saw with my own eyes the Prophet (ﷺ) when he, after Glorifying and Praising Allah,
started saying, 'Allah, not the people, made Mecca a sanctuary, so anybody who has belief in Allah
and the Last Day should neither shed blood in it, nor should he cut down its trees. If anybody tells
(argues) that fighting in it is permissible on the basis that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did fight in Mecca, say to
him, 'Allah allowed His Apostle and did not allow you.' "Allah allowed me only for a few hours on
that day (of the conquest) and today its sanctity is valid as it was before. So, those who are present
should inform those who are absent (concerning this fact." Abu Shuraih was asked, "What did `Amr
reply?" He said, (`Amr said) 'O Abu Shuraih! I know better than you in this respect Mecca does not
give protection to a sinner, a murderer or a thief."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 28, Hadith 12
The news of my fasting was mentioned to the Prophet (ﷺ) . So he entered upon me and I put for him a
leather cushion stuffed with palm-fibres. The Prophet (ﷺ) sat on the floor and the cushion was between me
and him. He said to me, "Isn't it sufficient for you (that you fast) three days a month?" I said, "O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! (I can fast more than this)." He said, "You may fast) five days a month." I said, "O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! (I can fast more than this)." He said, "(You may fast) seven days." I said, "O Allah's
Apostle!" He said, "Nine." I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "Eleven." I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!"
He said, "No fasting is superior to the fasting of (the Prophet (ﷺ) David) which was one half of a year, and
he used, to fast on alternate days. (See Hadith No. 300, Vol 3)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 79, Hadith 51
Hudhaifa said, "`Umar said, 'Who amongst you remembers the statement of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h)
about afflictions'?' I said, 'I know it as the Prophet (ﷺ) had said it.' `Umar said, 'No doubt, you are bold.
How did he say it?' I said, 'A man's afflictions (wrong deeds) concerning his wife, children and
neighbors are expiated by (his) prayers, charity, and enjoining good.' (The sub-narrator Sulaiman
added that he said, 'The prayer, charity, enjoining good and forbidding evil.') `Umar said, 'I did not
mean that, but I ask about that affliction which will spread like the waves of the sea.' I said, 'O chief of
the believers! You need not be afraid of it as there is a closed door between you and it.' He asked,
'Will the door be broken or opened?' I replied, 'No, it will be broken.' He said, 'Then, if it is broken, it
will never be closed again?' I replied, 'Yes.' " Then we were afraid to ask what that door was, so we
asked Masruq to inquire, and he asked Hudhaifa regarding it. Hudhaifa said, "The door was `Umar.
"We further asked Hudhaifa whether `Umar knew what that door meant. Hudhaifa replied in the
affirmative and added, "He knew it as one knows that there will be a night before the tomorrow
morning."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 24, Hadith 38
Yahya related to me from Malik from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi
from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf that he asked A'isha, the
wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, what the
prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, was like during Ramadan. She said, "The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not go above eleven rakas in
Ramadan or at any other time. He prayed four - do not ask me about
their beauty or length. Then he prayed another four - do not ask me
about their beauty and length. Then he prayed three."
A'isha
continued, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, are you sleeping before you
do the witr?' He said, A'isha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not
sleep.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 7, Hadith 9
Allah's Messnger (ﷺ) had alighted in his house (viz. of Abu Ayyub Ansari at the time of his emigration to Medina) and he occupied the lower storey, whereas Abu Ayyub Ansari lived in the upper storey. One night, Abu Ayyub Ansari got up and said (to himself): (How unfortunate it is) that we walk above the head of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), so they went aside and spent the night in a nook and then told Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) about it whereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: The lower storey is more comfortable (for me). but he (Abu Ayyub Ansari) said: We (would not live) over the roof under which you live. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) shifted to the upper storey, whereas Abu Ayyub Ansari shifted to the lower storey; and he (Abu Ayyub Ansari) used to prepare food for Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) ; and when it was brought (back) to him he asked (to locate) the part, where his fingers had touched (the food), and he followed his fingers on that part where his fingers (those of the Holy Prophet) had touched it. (One day) he prepared food which contained garlic, and when it was returned to him he asked (to locate) the part which the fingers of Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) had touched. It was said to him that he had not eaten (the food). He (Abd Ayyub Ansari) was distressed and went up to him (to the Holy Prophet) and said: Is it forbidden? But Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: No, (it is not forbidden), but I do not like it. and he (Abu Ayyub Ansari) said: I also do not like what you do not like or which you did not like. He (Abu Ayyub Ansari) said: (The Prophet did not eat garlic) as Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) was visited (by angels) and brought him the message of Allah.
Sahih Muslim Book 36, Hadith 232
When the ditch was dug, I saw Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) feeling very hungry. I came to my wife and said to her: Is there anything with you? I have seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) feeling extremely hungry. She brought out a bag of provisions which contained a sa', of barley. We had also with us a lamb. I slaughtered it. She ground the flour. She finished (this work) along with me. I cut it into pieces and put it in the earthen pot and then returned to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) (for inviting him). She said: Do not humiliate me in the presence of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and those who are with him. When I came to him I whispered to him saying: Allah's Messenger, we have slaughtered a lamb for you and she has ground a sa' of barley which we had with us. So you come along with a group of people with you. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said loudly: O people of the ditch, Jabir has arranged a feast for you, so (come along). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Do not remove your earthen pot from the hearth and do not bake the bread from the kneaded flour until I come. So I came and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came and he was ahead of the people; and I came to my wife and she said (to me): You will be humbled. I said: I did what you had asked me to do. She (his wife) said: I brought out the kneaded flour and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) put some saliva of his in that and blessed It. He then put saliva in the earthen pot and blessed it and then said. Call another baker who can bake with you. and bring out the soup from it, but do not remove it from the hearth, and the guests were one thousand. (Jabir said): I take an oath by Allah that all of them ate (the food to their fill) until they left it and went away and our earthen pot was brimming over as before, and so was the case with our flour, or as Dahhak (another narrator) said: It (the flour) was in the same condition and loaves had been prepared from that.
Sahih Muslim Book 36, Hadith 189
We served ourselves in the company of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). We tended our camels by turn. One day I had my turn to tend the camels, and I drove them in the afternoon. I found the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) addressing the people. I heard him say: Anyone amongst you who performs ablution, and does it well, then he stands and offers two rak’ahs of prayer, concentrating on it with his heart and body, Paradise will be his lot by all means. I said: Ha-ha! How fine it is! A man in front of me said: The action (mentioned by the Prophet) earlier, O ‘Uqbah, is finer that this one. I looked at him and found him to be ‘Umar b. al-Khattab. I asked him: What is that, O Abu Hafs? He replied: He (the Prophet) had said before you came: If any one of you performs ablution, and does it well, and when he finishes the ablution, he utters the words : I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, He has no associate, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger, all the eight doors of Paradise will be opened for him; he may enter (through) any of them.
Mu’awiyah said: Rabi’ah b. Yazid narrated this tradition to me from Abu Idris and the authority of ‘Uqbah b.’Amir.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 1, Hadith 169
"I said to 'Ata': 'What is the best time you think I should pray Al-'Atamah, either in congregation or on my own?' He said: 'I heard Ibn 'Abbas say: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) delayed Al-'Atamah one night until the people had slept and woken up, then slept and woken up again. Then 'Umar got up and said: 'The prayer, the prayer!'" 'Ata' said: 'Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out, and it is as if I can see him now, with water dripping from his head, putting his hand on the side of his head. .'" I checked with 'Ata' how the Prophet (ﷺ) put his hand on his head, and he showed me the same way as Ibn 'Abbas had done. 'Ata' spread his fingers a little, then placed them with the tips of his fingers on his forehead, then he drew his fingers together on his head until his thumb touched the edge of the ear that is next to the face, then moved it to his temple and forehead, then he said: 'Were it not that I would impose too much difficulty for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to offer this prayer only at this time.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 6, Hadith 38
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Amra bint Abd
ar-Rahman that when A'isha was doing itikaf she would only ask after
sick people if she was walking and not if she was standing still.
Malik said, "A person doing itikaf should not carry out
obligations of his, nor leave the mosque for them, nor should he help
anyone. He should only leave the mosque to relieve himself. If he were
able to go out to do things for people, visiting the sick, praying
over the dead and following funeral processions would be the things
with the most claim on his coming out."
Malik said, "A person
doing itikaf is not doing itikaf until he avoids what some one doing
itikaf should avoid, namely, visiting the sick, praying over the dead,
and entering houses, except to relieve himself."
Muwatta Malik Book 19, Hadith 2
