Yahya related to me from Malik, from 'Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn
Muhammad, that Amra bint 'Abd ar-Rahman told him that Ziyad ibn Abi
Sufyan once wrote to A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, saying, "'Abdullah ibn Abbas said that
whatever was haram for some one doing hajj was also haram for some one
who sent a sacrificial animal until the animal was sacrificed. I have
sent one, so write and tell me what you say about this, or tell the
man in charge of the animal what to do.
Amra said that A'isha
said, "It is notas Ibn Abbas has said. I once plaited the garlands for
the sacrificial animal of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, with my own two hands. Then after that the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, himself
put the garlands on the animal and then sent it with my father. And
there was nothing that Allah had made halal forthe Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that was haram for him until
such time as the animal had been sacrificed."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 53
I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) while he was standing on the pulpit, saying, "The remaining period of your
stay (on the earth) in comparison to the nations before you, is like the period between the `Asr prayer
and sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah and they acted upon it till midday, and then
they were worn out and were given for their labor, one Qirat each. Then the people of the Gospel were
given the Gospel and they acted upon it till the time of the `Asr prayer, and then they were worn out
and were given (for their labor), one Qirat each. Then you people were given the Qur'an and you acted
upon it till sunset and so you were given two Qirats each (double the reward of the previous nations)."
Then the people of the Torah said, 'O our Lord! These people have done a little labor (much less than
we) but have taken a greater reward.' Allah said, 'Have I withheld anything from your reward?' They
said, 'No.' Then Allah said, 'That is My Favor which I bestow on whom I wish.' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 97, Hadith 93
A woman of Ghamid came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: I have committed fornication. He said: Go back. She returned, and on the next day she came to him again, and said: Perhaps you want to send me back as you did to Ma’iz b. Malik. I swear by Allah, I am pregnant. He said to her: Go back. She then returned and came to him the next day. He said to her: Go back until you give birth to a child. She then returned. When she gave birth to a child, she brought the child to him, and said: Here it is! I have given birth to it. He said: Go back, and suckle him until you wean him. When she had weaned him, she brought him (the boy) to him with something in his hand which he was eating. The boy was then given to a certain man of the Muslims and he (the Prophet) commanded regarding her. So a pit was dug for her, and he gave orders about her and she was stoned to death. Khalid was one of those who were throwing stones at her. He threw a stone at her. When a drop blood fell on his cheeks, he abused her. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: Gently, Khalid. By Him in whose hand my soul is, she has reported to such an extent that if one who wrongfully takes extra tax were to repent to a like extent, he would be forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, prayed over her and she was buried.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 40, Hadith 92
"The people of As-Suffah were the guests of the people of Islam, they had nothing of people nor wealth to rely upon. And By Allah, the One Whom there is none worthy of worship besides Him – I would lay on the ground on my liver (side) due to hunger, And I would fasten a stone to my stomach out of hunger. One day I sat by the way that they (the Companions) use to come out through. Abu Bakr passed and so I asked him about an Ayah from Allah's Book, not asking him except that he might tell me to follow him (for something to eat). But he passed on without doing so. Then `Umar passed, so I asked him about an Ayah from Allah's Book, not asking him except that he might tell me to follow him. But he passed on without doing so. Then Abul-Qasim (s.a.w) passed, and he smiled when he saw me, and said: 'Abu Hurairah?' I said: 'I am here O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Come along.' He continued and I followed him, he entered his house, so I sought permission to enter, and he permitted me. He found a bowl of milk and said: 'Where did this milk come from?' It was said: 'It was a gift to us from so – and – so.' So the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: 'O Abu Hurairah' I said: 'I am here O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Go to the people of As-Suffah to invite them.' - Now, they were the guests of the people of Islam, they had nothing of people nor wealth to rely upon. Whenever some charity was brought to him, he would send it to them without using any of it. And when a gift was given to him (s.a.w), he would send for them to participate and share with him in it. I became upset about that, and I said (to myself): 'What good will this bowl be among the people of As-Suffah and I am the one bringing it to them?' Then he ordered me to circulate it among them (So I wondered) what of it would reach me from it, and I hoped that I would get from it what would satisfy me. But I would certainly not neglect to obey Allah and obey His Messenger, so I went to them and invited them. When they entered upon him they sat down. He said: 'Abu Hurairah, take the bowl and give it to them.' So I gave it to a man who drank his fill, then he gave it to another one, until it ended up with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), and all of the people had drank their fill. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) took the bowl, put it on his hand, then raised his head. He smiled and said: 'Abu Hurairah, drink.' So I drank, then he said: 'Drink.' I kept drinking and he kept on saying, 'Drink.' Then I said: 'By the One Who sent you with the truth! I have no more space for it.' So he took the bowl and praised Allah, mentioned His Name and drank.'” (Sahih)
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 37, Hadith 63
"When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to pray Tahajjud, he said: Allahumma, lakal-hamdu anta nurus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna wa lakal-hamdu anta qayyamus-samawati wal ardi wa man fihinna wa lakal-hamdu, anta haqqun wa wa'duka haqqun wal jannatu haqqun wan-nuru haqqun wan-nabiyyuna haqqun wa Muhammadan haqqun, laka aslant wa 'alaika tawakkaltu wa bika amant. ( O Allah, to You be praise, You are the Light of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sustainer of the Heavens and the earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sovereign of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise; You are True, Your promise is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, the Hour is true, the Prophets are true and Muhammad is true. To You have I submitted, in You I put my trust and in You I have believed.'" Then (one of the narrators) Qutaibah mentioned some words the meaning of which was: "Wa bika khasamtu wa ilaika hakamtu, ighfirli ma quadrate wa ma akhkhartu wa ma a'lantu antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'khkhir, la ilaha illa anta wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (And with Your help I argue forward. There is no God but You and there is no power and no strength except with Allah).'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 20, Hadith 22
"My father 'Ali called me to bring (water for) Wudu', so I brought it to him, and he started by washing his hands three times, before putting them into the water. Then he rinsed his mouth three times and sniffed water into his nose and blew it out three times. Then he washed his face three times, then his right hand up to the elbow three times, then his left likewise. Then he wiped his head once then he washed his right foot up to the ankle three times, then the left likewise. Then he stood up and said: 'Pass me the vessel.' So I passed the vessel containing the remaining water for his Wudu' to him, and he drank from it standing up. I was surprised and when he noticed that he said: 'Do not be surprised, for I saw your father the Prophet (ﷺ) doing,' referring to his Wudu' and drinking the leftover water while standing."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 1, Hadith 95
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Qasim
from his father that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, used to say in the tashahhud, "Greetings,
good words, prayers, pure actions belong to Allah. I testify that
there is no god except Allah, alone without partner, and that Muhammad
is His slave and His Messenger. Peace be on you, Prophet, and the
mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be on us and on the slaves of
Allah who are salihun. Peace be upon you."
"At-tahiyatu, at-
tayibatu, as-salawatu, az-zakiyatu lillah. Ash-hadu an la ilaha
illa'llah, wahdahu la sharika lah wa anna Muhammadan abduhu wa
rasuluhu. As-salamu alayka ayyuha-n-nabiyyu wa rahmatu-llahi wa
barakatuhu. As-salamu alayna wa ala ibadi-llahi's-salihin. As-salamu
alaykum."
Muwatta Malik Book 3, Hadith 58
“The Messenger of
Allah
(ﷺ) delivered a sermon to us and said: ‘O people! Repent to
Allah
before you die. Hasten to do good deeds before you become
preoccupied
(because of sickness and old age). Uphold the relationship
that
exists between you and your Lord by remembering Him a great deal
and
by giving a great deal of charity in secret and openly. (Then) you
will be granted provision and Divine support, and your condition will
improve. Know that Allah has enjoined Friday upon you in this place
of
mine, on this day, in this month, in this year, until the Day of
Resurrection. Whoever abandons it, whether during my lifetime or
after
I am gone, whether he has a just or an unjust ruler, whether he
takes
it lightly or denies (that it is obligatory), may Allah cause
him to
lose all sense of tranquility and contentment, and may He not
bless
him in his affairs. Indeed, his prayer will not be valid, his
Zakat
will not be valid, his Hajj will not be valid, his fasting will
not be
valid, and his righteous deeds will not be accepted, until he
repents.
Whoever repents, Allah will accept his repentance. No woman
should be
appointed as Imam over a man, no Bedouin should be
appointed as Imam
over a Muhajir, no immoral person should be
appointed as Imam over a
(true) believer, unless that is forced upon
him and he fears his sword
or whip.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 5, Hadith 279
“Allah the Blessed and Exalted says: ‘O My slaves, all of you
are
sinners except those whom I have saved. So ask Me for forgiveness,
I
will forgive you. Whoever among you knows that I have the power to
forgive and asks Me to forgive by My power, I will forgive him. All
of
you are astray except those whom I guide. Ask Me for guidance and
I
will guide you. All of you are poor except those whom I enrich
(make
independent of means). Ask of Me and I will grant you
provision. Even
if your living and your dead, your first and your
last, your fresh and
your dry, were all as pious as the most pious
among My slaves, that
would not increase my dominion as much as a
gnat’s wing, and if they
were to be as evil as the most evil among
My slaves, that would not
detract from My dominion as much as a
gnat’s wing. Even if your living
and your dead, your first and your
last, your fresh and your dry, were
to join together and each of them
were to ask for all that he wishes
for, that would only detract from
My dominion as much as if one of you
were to pass by the edge of the
sea and dip a needle in it and
withdraw it. That is because I am the
Most Generous, Majestic. I give
with a word; when I will something,
all I do is say to it “Be!” – and
it is.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 37, Hadith 158
Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab that Abu Umama ibn Sahl ibn
Hunayf said, ''Amir ibn Rabia saw Sahl ibn Hunayf doing a ghusl and
said, 'I have not seen the like of what I see today, not even the skin
of a maiden who has never been out of doors.' Sahl fell to the ground.
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was
approached and it was said, 'Messenger of Allah, can you do anything
about Sahl ibn Hunayf? By Allah, he can not raise his head.' He said,
'Do you suspect anyone of it?' They said, 'We suspect Amir ibn Rabia.'
"
He continued, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, summoned Amir and was furious with him and said,
'Why does one of you kill his brother? Why did you not say, "May Allah
bless you?" Do ghusl for it.' Amir washed his face, hands, elbows,
knees, the end of his feet, and inside his lower garment in a vessel.
Then he poured it over him, and Sahl went off with the people, and
there was nothing wrong with him."
Muwatta Malik Book 50, Hadith 2
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, "A man said that he would give something in charity. He went out with
his object of charity and unknowingly gave it to a thief. Next morning the people said that he had
given his object of charity to a thief. (On hearing that) he said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. I
will give alms again." And so he again went out with his alms and (unknowingly) gave it to an
adulteress. Next morning the people said that he had given his alms to an adulteress last night. The
man said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I gave my alms) to an adulteress. I will give alms
again." So he went out with his alms again and (unknowingly) gave it to a rich person. (The people)
next morning said that he had given his alms to a wealthy person. He said, "O Allah! All the praises
are for you. (I had given alms) to a thief, to an adulteress and to a wealthy man." Then someone came
and said to him, "The alms which you gave to the thief, might make him abstain from stealing, and
that given to the adulteress might make her abstain from illegal sexual intercourse (adultery), and that
given to the wealthy man might make him take a lesson from it and spend his wealth which Allah has
given him, in Allah's cause."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 24, Hadith 25
Yahya related to me from Malik, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn
Yasar, that Kab al-Ahbar was once coming back from Syria with a group
of riders, and at a certain point along the road they found some game-
meat and Kab said they could eat it. When they got back to Madina they
went to Umar ibn al-Khattab and told him about that, and he said, "Who
told you you could do that?", and they said, ''Kab.'' He said, "He was
indeed the one I made amir over you until you should return."
Later, when they were on the road to Makka, a swarm of locusts passed
them by and Kab told them to catch them and eat them. When they got
back to Umar ibn al-Khattab they told him about this, and he said (to
Kab), "What made you tell them they could do that?" Kab said, "It is
game of the sea." He said, "How do you know?", and Kab said, "Amir al-
muminin, by the One in whose hand my self is, it is only the sneeze of
a fish which it sneezes twice every year."
Malik was asked
whether a muhrim could buy game that he had found on the way. He
replied, "Game that is only hunted to be offered to people performing
Hajj I disapprove of and forbid, but there is no harm in game that a
man has which he does not intend for those in ihram, but which a
muhrim finds and buys."
Malik said, about someone who had
some game with him that he had hunted or bought at the time when he
had entered into ihram, that he did not have to get rid of it, and
that there was no harm in him giving it to his family.
Malik
said that it was halal for some one in ihram to fish in the sea or in
rivers and lakes, etc.
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 84
Safiya, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) told me that she went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to visit him in the mosque
while he was in I`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. She had a talk with him for a while, then she
got up in order to return home. The Prophet (ﷺ) accompanied her. When they reached the gate of the
mosque, opposite the door of Um-Salama, two Ansari men were passing by and they greeted Allah's
Apostle . He told them: Do not run away! And said, "She is (my wife) Safiya bint Huyai." Both of
them said, "Subhan Allah, (How dare we think of any evil) O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" And they felt it. The
Prophet said (to them), "Satan reaches everywhere in the human body as blood reaches in it,
(everywhere in one's body). I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 33, Hadith 10
For the whole year I had the desire to ask `Umar bin Al-Khattab regarding the explanation of a Verse
(in Surat Al-Tahrim) but I could not ask him because I respected him very much. When he went to
perform the Hajj, I too went along with him. On our return, while we were still on the way home.
`Umar went aside to answer the call of nature by the Arak trees. I waited till he finished and then I
proceeded with him and asked him. "O chief of the Believers! Who were the two wives of the Prophet (ﷺ)
who aided one another against him?" He said, "They were Hafsa and `Aisha." Then I said to him, "By
Allah, I wanted to ask you about this a year ago, but I could not do so owing to my respect for you."
`Umar said, "Do not refrain from asking me. If you think that I have knowledge (about a certain
matter), ask me; and if I know (something about it), I will tell you." Then `Umar added, "By Allah, in
the Pre-lslamic Period of Ignorance we did not pay attention to women until Allah revealed regarding
them what He revealed regarding them and assigned for them what He has assigned. Once while I was
thinking over a certain matter, my wife said, "I recommend that you do so-and-so." I said to her,
"What have you got to do with the is matter? Why do you poke your nose in a matter which I want to
see fulfilled.?"
She said, How strange you are, O son of Al-Khattab! You don't want to be argued with whereas your
daughter, Hafsa surely, argues with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) so much that he remains angry for a full day!"
`Umar then reported; how he at once put on his outer garment and went to Hafsa and said to her, "O
my daughter! Do you argue with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) so that he remains angry the whole day?" H. afsa
said, "By Allah, we argue with him." `Umar said, "Know that I warn you of Allah's punishment and
the anger of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . . . O my daughter! Don't be betrayed by the one who is proud of her
beauty because of the love of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) for her (i.e. `Aisha)." `Umar addled, "Then I went out to
Um Salama's house who was one of my relatives, and I talked to her. She said, O son of Al-Khattab! It
is rather astonishing that you interfere in everything; you even want to interfere between Allah's
Apostle and his wives!' By Allah, by her talk she influenced me so much that I lost some of my anger.
I left her (and went home).
At that time I had a friend from the Ansar who used to bring news (from the Prophet) in case of my
absence, and I used to bring him the news if he was absent. In those days we were afraid of one of the
kings of Ghassan tribe. We heard that he intended to move and attack us, so fear filled our hearts
because of that. (One day) my Ansari friend unexpectedly knocked at my door, and said, "Open
Open!' I said, 'Has the king of Ghassan come?' He said, 'No, but something worse; Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has
isolated himself from his wives.' I said, 'Let the nose of `Aisha and Hafsa be stuck to dust (i.e.
humiliated)!' Then I put on my clothes and went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)'s residence, and behold, he was
staying in an upper room of his to which he ascended by a ladder, and a black slave of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
was (sitting) on the first step.
I said to him, 'Say (to the Prophet (ﷺ) ) `Umar bin Al-Khattab is here.' Then the Prophet (ﷺ) admitted me and I
narrated the story to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). When I reached the story of Um Salama, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) smiled
while he was lying on a mat made of palm tree leaves with nothing between him and the mat.
Underneath his head there was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibres, and leaves of a saut tree were
piled at his feet, and above his head hung a few water skins. On seeing the marks of the mat imprinted
on his side, I wept. He said.' 'Why are you weeping?' I replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Caesar and
Khosrau are leading the life (i.e. Luxurious life) while you, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) though you are, is living in
destitute". The Prophet (ﷺ) then replied. 'Won't you be satisfied that they enjoy this world and we the
Hereafter?' "
