"There was an eclipse of the sun and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed and the people with him. He stood for long time reciting something like Surah Al-Baqarah, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated. Then he got up and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated, then he finished (his prayer) and the sun had been clear. He said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT) and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then remember Allah (SWT) the Mighty and Sublime.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), we saw you stretching out your hand when you were standing, then we saw you moving backward. He said: 'I saw Paradise-or it was shown to me- and I reached out to a take a bunch of its fruits. If I ha taken it you would have eaten from it for as long as this world lasts. And I saw Hell and I have never seen anything like it, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.' They said: "Why, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? He said: 'Because of their ingratitude.' It was said: 'Are they ungrateful to Allah?' He said: 'They are ungrateful to their husbands and they are ungrateful for kind treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees (one) bad thing from you, she will say: I have never seen anything good from you.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 16, Hadith 35
I said to Ibn `Abbas, "Nauf-Al-Bakali claims that Moses (the companion of Khadir) was not the
Moses of Bani Israel but he was another Moses." Ibn `Abbas remarked that the enemy of Allah (Nauf)
was a liar.
Narrated Ubai bin Ka`b:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Once the Prophet (ﷺ) Moses stood up and addressed Bani Israel. He was asked, "Who
is the most learned man amongst the people. He said, "I am the most learned." Allah admonished
Moses as he did not attribute absolute knowledge to Him (Allah). So Allah inspired to him "At the
junction of the two seas there is a slave amongst my slaves who is more learned than you." Moses
said, "O my Lord! How can I meet him?" Allah said: Take a fish in a large basket (and proceed) and
you will find him at the place where you will lose the fish. So Moses set out along with his (servant)
boy, Yusha` bin Noon and carried a fish in a large basket till they reached a rock, where they laid their
heads (i.e. lay down) and slept. The fish came out of the basket and it took its way into the sea as in a
tunnel. So it was an amazing thing for both Moses and his (servant) boy. They proceeded for the rest
of that night and the following day. When the day broke, Moses said to his (servant) boy: "Bring us
our early meal. No doubt, we have suffered much fatigue in this journey." Moses did not get tired till
he passed the place about which he was told. There the (servant) boy told Moses, "Do you remember
when we betook ourselves to the rock, I indeed forgot the fish." Moses remarked, "That is what we
have been seeking. So they went back retracing their footsteps, till they reached the rock. There they
saw a man covered with a garment (or covering himself with his own garment). Moses greeted him.
Al-Khadir replied saying, "How do people greet each other in your land?"
Moses said, "I am Moses." He asked, "The Moses of Bani Israel?" Moses replied in the affirmative
and added, "May I follow you so that you teach me of that knowledge which you have been taught."
Al-Khadir replied, "Verily! You will not be able to remain patient with me, O Moses! I have some of
the knowledge of Allah which He has taught me and which you do not know, while you have some
knowledge which Allah has taught you which I do not know." Moses said, "Allah willing, you will
find me patient and I will disobey no order of yours. So both of them set out walking along the
seashore, as they did not have a boat. In the meantime a boat passed by them and they requested the
crew of the boat to take them on board. The crew recognized Al-Khadir and took them on board
without fare. Then a sparrow came and stood on the edge of the boat and dipped its beak once or twice
in the sea. Al-Khadir said: "O Moses! My knowledge and your knowledge have not decreased Allah's
knowledge except as much as this sparrow has decreased the water of the sea with its beak." Al-
Khadir went to one of the planks of the boat and plucked it out. Moses said, "These people gave us a
free lift but you have broken their boat and scuttled it so as to drown its people." Al-Khadir replied,
"Didn't I tell you that you will not be able to remain patient with me." Moses said, "Call me not to
account for what I forgot." The first (excuse) of Moses was that he had forgotten.
Then they proceeded further and found a boy playing with other boys. Al-Khadir took hold of the
boy's head from the top and plucked it out with his hands (i.e. killed him). Moses said, "Have you
killed an innocent soul who has killed none." Al-Khadir replied, "Did I not tell you that you cannot
remain patient with me?" Then they both proceeded till when they came to the people of a town, they
asked them for food, but they refused to entertain them. Then they found there a wall on the point of
collapsing. Al-Khadir repaired it with his own hands. Moses said, "If you had wished, surely you
could have taken wages for it." Al-Khadir replied, "This is the parting between you and me." The
Prophet added, "May Allah be Merciful to Moses! Would that he could have been more patient to
learn more about his story with Al-Khadir. "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 3, Hadith 64
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from Fatima
bint al Mundhir that Asma bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq said, "I went to
A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, during an eclipse of the sun, and everybody was standing in
prayer, and she too was standing praying. I said, 'What is everybody
doing?' She pointed towards the sky with her hand and said, 'Glory be
to Allah.' I said, 'A sign?' She nodded 'Yes' with her head."
She continued, "I stood until I had almost fainted, and I began to
pour water over my head. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, praised Allah and spoke well of Him, and then
said, 'There is nothing which I had previously not seen beforehand
that I have not now seen while standing - even the Garden and the
Fire. It has been revealed to me that you will be tried in your graves
with a trial, like, or near to, the trial of the Dajjal (I do not know
which one Asma said). Every one of you will have someone who comes to
him and asks him, 'What do you know about this man?' A mumin, or one
who has certainty (muqin) (I do not know which one Asma said), will
say, 'He is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, who came to us with clear proofs and guidance, and we
answered and believed and followed.' He will then be told, 'Sleep in a
good state. We know now that you were a mumin.' A hypocrite, however,
or one who has doubts (l do not know which one Asma said), will say,
'I do not know, I heard everybody saying something and I said it.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 12, Hadith 4
The people used to ask Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about the good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I
should be overtaken by them. So I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! We were living in ignorance and in an
(extremely) worst atmosphere, then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil
after this good?" He said, "Yes." I said, 'Will there be any good after that evil?" He replied, "Yes, but
it will be tainted (not pure.)'' I asked, "What will be its taint?" He replied, "(There will be) some
people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of their deeds
and disapprove of some others." I asked, "Will there be any evil after that good?" He replied, "Yes,
(there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell) Fire, and whoever will respond to their
call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire." I said, "O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them
to us?" He said, "They will be from our own people and will speak our language." I said, "What do
you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?" He said, "Stick to the group of
Muslims and their Imam (ruler)." I said, "If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imam (ruler)?"
He said, "Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of a tree till death
overtakes you while you are in that state."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 92, Hadith 35
Hafsa said, 'We used to forbid our young women to go out for the two `Id prayers. A woman came
and stayed at the palace of Bani Khalaf and she narrated about her sister whose husband took part in
twelve holy battles along with the Prophet (ﷺ) and her sister was with her husband in six (out of these
twelve). She (the woman's sister) said, "We used to treat the wounded, look after the patients and once
I asked the Prophet, 'Is there any harm for any of us to stay at home if she doesn't have a veil?' He
said, 'She should cover herself with the veil of her companion and should participate in the good deeds
and in the religious gathering of the Muslims.' When Um `Atiya came I asked her whether she had
heard it from the Prophet. She replied, "Yes. May my father be sacrificed for him (the Prophet)!
(Whenever she mentioned the Prophet (ﷺ) she used to say, 'May my father be sacrificed for him) I have
heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, 'The unmarried young virgins and the mature girl who stay often screened or
the young unmarried virgins who often stay screened and the menstruating women should come out
and participate in the good deeds as well as the religious gathering of the faithful believers but the
menstruating women should keep away from the Musalla (praying place).' " Hafsa asked Um `Atiya
surprisingly, "Do you say the menstruating women?" She replied, "Doesn't a menstruating woman
attend `Arafat (Hajj) and such and such (other deeds)?"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 6, Hadith 29
the Prophet (saas) said to a man: "When you go to lay down, or go to your bed, say: Allahumma aslamtu wajhi ilayka, wa al-ja'tu zahri ilayka, wa fawwadtu amri ilayka, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayka, la malja'a wa la manja'a minka illa ilayka, amantu bi kitabikal-ladhi anzalta, wa nabiyyikal arsalta [O Allah, I have submitted my face (i.e., myself) to You, and I am under Your command (i.e., I depend upon You in all my affairs), and I put my trust in You, hoping for Your reward and fearing Your punishment. There is no fleeing from You and no refuge from You except with You. I believe in Your Book that You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent).' Then if you die that night, you will die in a state of the Fitrah (nature), and if you wake in the morning you will wake with a great deal of good."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 34, Hadith 50
Abu Bakr bought a (camel) saddle from `Azib for thirteen Dirhams. Abu Bakr said to `Azib, "Tell Al-
Bara' to carry the saddle for me." `Azib said, "No, unless you relate to me what happened to you and
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) when you left Mecca while the pagans were in search of you." Abu Bakr said, "We
left Mecca and we traveled continuously for that night and the following day till it was midday. I
looked (around) searching for shade to take as shelter, and suddenly I came across a rock, and found a
little shade there. So I cleaned the place and spread a bed for the Prophet (ﷺ) in the shade and said to him,
'Lie down, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).' So the Prophet (ﷺ) lay down and I went out, looking around to see if there
was any person pursuing us. Suddenly I saw a shepherd driving his sheep towards the rock, seeking
what we had already sought from it. I asked him, 'To whom do you belong, O boy?' He said, 'I belong
to a man from Quraish.' He named the man and I recognized him. I asked him, 'Is there any milk with
your sheep?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Will you then milk (some) for us?' He said, 'Yes.' Then I asked him
to tie the legs of one of the sheep and clean its udder, and then ordered him to clean his hands from
dust. Then the shepherd cleaned his hands by striking his hands against one another. After doing so,
he milked a small amount of milk. I used to keep for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) a leather water-container, the
mouth of which was covered with a piece of cloth. I poured water on the milk container till its lower
part was cold. Then I took the milk to the Prophet (ﷺ) whom I found awake. I said to him, 'Drink, O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).' So he drank till I became pleased. Then I said, 'It is time for us to move, O Allah's
Apostle!' He said, 'Yes.' So we set out while the people (i.e. Quraish pagans) were searching for us,
but none found us except Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju`shum who was riding his horse. I said, 'These are
our pursuers who have found us. O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!' He said, 'Do not grieve, for Allah is with us."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 62, Hadith 4
Yahya related to me from Malik, from Abdullah ibn Dinar, that
Abdullah ibn Umar used to say, "Anyone that does umra in the months of
hajj, that is, in Shawwal, Dhu'l-Qada, or in Dhu'l-Hijja before the
hajj, and then stays in Makka until the time for hajj, is doing
tamattu if he then does hajj. He must sacrifice whatever animal it is
easy for him to obtain, and if he cannot find one then he must fast
three days during hajj and seven days when he returns."
Malik
said, "This is only the case if he stays until the hajj and does hajj
in that same year."
Malik said that if someone who was from
Makka but had stopped living there and gone to live elsewhere, came
back to do umra in the months of the hajj and then stayed in Makka to
begin hajj there, he was doing tamattu, and had to offer up a
sacrificial animal, or fast if he could not find one. He was not the
same as the people of Makka.
Malik was asked whether someone
who was not from Makka and entered Makka to do umra in the months of
hajj with the intention of staying on to begin his hajj there was
doing tamattu or not, and he said, "Yes, he is doing tamattu, and he
is not the same as the people of Makka, even if he has the intention
of staying there. This is because he has entered Makka, and is not one
of its people, and making a sacrifice or fasting is incumbent on
anyone who is not from Makka, and, although he intends to stay, he
does not know what possibilities might arise later. He is not one of
the people of Makka."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 64
Shaqiq said, "While I was sitting with `Abdullah and Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari, the latter asked the
former, 'If a person becomes Junub and does not find water for one month, can he perform
Tayammum and offer his prayer?' (He applied in the negative). Abu Musa said, 'What do you say
about this verse from Sura "Al-Ma'ida": When you do not find water then perform Tayammum with
clean earth? `Abdullah replied, 'If we allowed it then they would probably perform Tayammum with
clean earth even if water were available but cold.' I said to Shaqiq, 'You then disliked to perform
Tayammum because of this?' Shaqiq said, 'Yes.' (Shaqiq added), "Abu Musa said, 'Haven't you heard
the statement of `Ammar to `Umar? He said: I was sent out by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) for some job and I
became Junub and could not find water so I rolled myself over the dust (clean earth) like an animal
does, and when I told the Prophet (ﷺ) of that he said, 'Like this would have been sufficient.' The Prophet (ﷺ)
(saying so) lightly stroked the earth with his hand once and blew it off, then passed his (left) hand over
the back of his right hand or his (right) hand over the back of his left hand and then passed them over
his face.' So `Abdullah said to Abu- Musa, 'Don't you know that `Umar was not satisfied with
`Ammar's statement?' "
Narrated Shaqiq: While I was with `Abdullah and Abu Musa, the latter said to the former, "Haven't
you heard the statement of `Ammar to `Umar? He said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent you and me out and I
became Junub and rolled myself in the dust (clean earth) (for Tayammum). When we came to Allah's
Apostle I told him about it and he said, 'This would have been sufficient,' passing his hands over his
face and the backs of his hands once only.' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 7, Hadith 14
(the daughter of Abu Talib) I visited Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in the year of the Conquest of Mecca and found
him taking a bath, and his daughter, Fatima was screening him. When I greeted him, he said, "Who is
it?" I replied, "I am Um Hani, the daughter of Abu Talib." He said, "Welcome, O Um Hani ! " When
the Prophet (ﷺ) had finished his bath, he stood up and offered eight rak`at of prayer while he was wrapped
in a single garment. When he had finished his prayer, I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! My maternal brother
assumes (or claims) that he will murder some man whom I have given shelter, i.e., so-and-so bin
Hubaira." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O Um Hani! We shelter him whom you have sheltered." Um Hani
added, "That happened in the forenoon."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 184
'Abd Allah b. Rabah al-Ansari, whom the Ansar called faqih (juries), came to us from Medina, and reported us on the authority of Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent a military expedition consisting of the chief Companions. He then narrated the same story, saying Nothing awakened us except the rising sun. We stoop up in bewilderment, for our prayer. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Wait a little, wait a little. When the sun rose high, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Those who sued to observer the two rak'ahs of Fajr prayer (sunnah prayer before obligatory prayer) should observe them. Then those who used to observe and those who would not observe stood up and said prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded to call for prayer; the call for prayer was made accordingly. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood and led us in prayer. When he turned away (from the prayer) he said: We thank Allah for the fact that we were not engaged in any wordily affairs which detained us from our prayer. Instead our souls were in the hands of Allah. He released them whenever He wished. If any one of you gets morning prayer tomorrow at its proper time, he should offer a similar prayer as an atonement.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 2, Hadith 48
"I was listening to 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin Khattab in the mosque, and when the time for prayer came, he got up, performed ablution, and offered prayer, then he went back to where he had been sitting. When the time for 'Asr (Afternnon prayer) came, he got up, performed ablution, and offered prayer, then he went back to where he had been sitting. When the time for Maghrib (Sunset prayer) came, he got up, performed ablution, and offered prayer, then he went back to where he had been sitting. I said: 'May Allah improve you (i.e., your condition) Is it obligatory or Sunnah to perform ablution for every prayer?' He said: 'Did you notice that?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'No (it is not obligatory). If I perform ablution for Morning prayer I can perform all of the prayers with this ablution, so as long as I do not get impure. But I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "Whoever performs ablution while he is pure, he will have ten merits." So I wanted to earn the merits.'"
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 1, Hadith 246
Aisha said, "Barira came to me and said, 'I have agreed with my masters to pay them nine Uqiyas (of
gold) (in installments) one Uqiya per year; please help me.' I said, 'I am ready to pay the whole
amount now provided your masters agree that your Wala' will be for me.' So, Barira went to her
masters and told them about that offer but they refused to accept it. She returned, and at that time,
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting (present). Barira said, 'I told them of the offer but they did not accept it
and insisted on having the Wala'.' The Prophet (ﷺ) heard that." `Aisha narrated the whole story to the
Prophet. He said to her, "Buy her and stipulate that her Wala' would be yours as the Wala' is for the
manumitter." `Aisha did so. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) stood up in front of the people, and after glorifying
Allah he said, "Amma Ba`du (i.e. then after)! What about the people who impose conditions which are
not in Allah's Book (Laws)? Any condition that is not in Allah's Book (Laws) is invalid even if they
were one hundred conditions, for Allah's decisions are the right ones and His conditions are the strong
ones (firmer) and the Wala' will be for the manumitter."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 34, Hadith 119
"'Aishah liked my honesty and hired me, and she showed me how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to perform Wudu'. She rinsed her mouth, sniffed water into her nose and blew it out three times, and washed her face three times. Then she washed her right hand three times and her left hand three times. Then she put her hand on the front of her head and wiped her head once, front to back. Then she rubbed her ears with her hands, then she passed her hands over her cheeks."
Salim said: "I came to her as a slave with a contract of manumission, and she did not hide herself from me. She would sit before me and talk to me, until I came to her one day and said: 'Pray for blessing for me, O Mother of Believers.' She said: 'Why is that?' I said: 'Allah has set me free.' She said: 'May Allah bless you.' Then she lowered the Hijab before me, and I never saw her again after that day."
