We set out assuming the Ihram for Hajj in the months of Hajj towards the sacred precincts of Hajj. We
dismounted at Sarif and the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, "Whoever has not got the Hadi with him
and likes to make it as `Umra, he should do it, but he who has got the Hadi with him should not do it."
The Prophet (ﷺ) and some of his wealthy companions had the Hadi with them, so they did not finish
Ihram after performing the `Umra. The Prophet (ﷺ) came to me while I was weeping. He asked me the
reason for it. I replied, "I have heard of what you have said to your companions and I cannot do the
`Umra." He asked me, "What is the matter with you?" I replied, "I am not praying." He said, "There is
no harm in it as you are one of the daughters of Adam and the same is written for you as for others.
So, you should perform Hajj and I hope that Allah will enable you to perform the `Umra as well." So,
I carried on till we departed from Mina and halted at Al-Mahassab. The Prophet (ﷺ) called `Abdur-
Rahman and said, "Go out of the sanctuary with your sister and let her assume Ihram for `Umra, and
after both of you have finished the Tawaf I will be waiting for you at this place." We came back at
midnight and the Prophet (ﷺ) asked us, "Have you finished?" I replied in the affirmative. He announced
the departure and the people set out for the journey and some of them had performed the Tawaf of the
Ka`ba before the morning prayer, and after that the Prophet (ﷺ) set out for Medina.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 26, Hadith 15
I was with the Prophet (ﷺ) at one of the farms of Medina while he was leaning on a date palm leaf-stalk.
He passed by a group of Jews and some of them said to the other, Ask him (the Prophet) about the
spirit. Some others said, "Do not ask him, lest he should tell you what you dislike" But they went up
to him and said, "O Abal Qasim! Inform us bout the spirit." The Prophet (ﷺ) stood up for a while, waiting.
I realized that he was being Divinely Inspired, so I kept away from him till the inspiration was over.
Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "(O Muhammad) they ask you regarding the spirit, Say: The spirit its
knowledge is with my Lord (i.e., nobody has its knowledge except Allah)" (17.85) (This is a miracle
of the Qur'an that all the scientists up till now do not know about the spirit, i.e, how life comes to a
body and how it goes away at its death) (See Hadith No. 245, Vol. 6)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 96, Hadith 28
Rifa`a Al-Qurazi divorced his wife irrevocably (i.e. that divorce was the final). Later on `Abdur-
Rahman bin Az-Zubair married her after him. She came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I
was Rifa`a's wife and he divorced me thrice, and then I was married to `Abdur-Rahman bin AzZubair,
who, by Allah has nothing with him except something like this fringe, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)," showing a
fringe she had taken from her covering sheet. Abu Bakr was sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) while Khalid Ibn
Sa`id bin Al-As was sitting at the gate of the room waiting for admission. Khalid started calling Abu
Bakr, "O Abu Bakr! Why don't you reprove this lady from what she is openly saying before Allah's
Apostle?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did nothing except smiling, and then said (to the lady), "Perhaps you want
to go back to Rifa`a? No, (it is not possible), unless and until you enjoy the sexual relation with him
(`Abdur Rahman), and he enjoys the sexual relation with you."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 112
(the mother of believers) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) during his fatal ailment said, "Order Abu Bakr to lead the
people in prayer." I said, "If Abu Bakr stood at your place (in prayers, the people will not be able to
hear him because of his weeping, so order `Umar to lead the people in prayer." He again said, "Order
Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer " Then I said to Hafsa, "Will you say (to the Prophet), 'If Abu
Bakr stood at your place, the people will not be able to hear him be cause of his weeping, so order
`Umar to lead the people in prayer?" Hafsa did so, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "You are like the
companions of Joseph (See Qur'an, 12:30-32). Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Hafsa
then said to me, "I have never received any good from you!"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 96, Hadith 34
"Barirah came to me and said: 'O 'Sishah, I have drawn up a contract of manumission with my master, (to buy my freedom) in return for nine Uwqiyah, one Uwqiyah to be paid each year; help me,' she had not yet paid anything toward her contract of manumission.' 'Aishah, who liked her and wanted to help her, said: 'Go back to your masters and if they agree to let me pay the whole sum and that your loyalty will be to me, I will do it.' So Barirah went to her masters and suggested that to them, but they refused and said: 'if she wants to seek reward (with Allah) by freeing you, let her do so, but (you loyalty) will be to us, 'Aishah told the Messenger of Allah about that and he said: 'Do not let that stop you. Buy her and set her free, and loyalty belongs to the one who sets the slave free.; so she did that, then the Messenger of Allah stood up before the people, praised and glorified Allah, then said: 'What is the matter with people who stipulate conditions that are not in the Book of Allah? Whoever stipulates conditions that are not in even if there are a hundred conditions? The decree of Allah takes priority, and the conditions of Allah binding. And loyalty belongs to the one who sets the slaves free.'
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 44, Hadith 208
One of the daughters of `Uthman died at Mecca. We went to attend her funeral procession. Ibn `Umar
and Ibn `Abbas were also present. I sat in between them (or said, I sat beside one of them. Then a man
came and sat beside me.) `Abdullah bin `Umar said to `Amr bin `Uthman, "Will you not prohibit
crying as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has said, 'The dead person is tortured by the crying of his relatives.?" Ibn
`Abbas said, "`Umar used to say so." Then he added narrating, "I accompanied `Umar on a journey
from Mecca till we reached Al-Baida. There he saw some travelers in the shade of a Samura (A kind
of forest tree). He said (to me), "Go and see who those travelers are." So I went and saw that one of
them was Suhaib. I told this to `Umar who then asked me to call him. So I went back to Suhaib and
said to him, "Depart and follow the chief of the faithful believers." Later, when `Umar was stabbed,
Suhaib came in weeping and saying, "O my brother, O my friend!" (on this `Umar said to him, "O
Suhaib! Are you weeping for me while the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The dead person is punished by some of the
weeping of his relatives?" Ibn `Abbas added, "When `Umar died I told all this to Aisha and she said,
'May Allah be merciful to `Umar. By Allah, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not say that a believer is punished by
the weeping of his relatives. But he said, Allah increases the punishment of a non-believer because of
the weeping of his relatives." Aisha further added, "The Qur'an is sufficient for you (to clear up this
point) as Allah has stated: 'No burdened soul will bear another's burden.' " (35.18). Ibn `Abbas then
said, "Only Allah makes one laugh or cry." Ibn `Umar did not say anything after that.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 23, Hadith 46
The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said to me: When you go to your bed, perform ablution like the ablution for prayer, and then lie on your right side and say: O Allah I have handed over my face to thee, entrusted my affairs to thee, and committed my back to thee out of desire for and fear to thee. There is no refuge and no place of safety from thee except by having recource to thee. I believe in Thy Book which Thou hast sent down and in Thy prophet whom thou hast sent down. He said : If you die (that night), you would die in the true religion, and utter these words in the last of that you utter (other prayers). Al-Bara said : I said: I memorise them, and then I repeated, saying “and in Thy Apostle whom Thou hast sent”. He said : No, say : “and in Thy Prophet whom Thou hast sent.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 43, Hadith 274
I came to `Aisha during the solar eclipse. The people were standing (offering prayer) and she too, was
standing and offering prayer. I asked, "What is wrong with the people?" She pointed towards the sky
with her hand and said, Subhan Allah!'' I asked her, "Is there a sign?" She nodded with her head
meaning, yes. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) finished (the prayer), he glorified and praised Allah and said,
"There is not anything that I have not seen before but I have seen now at this place of mine, even
Paradise and Hell. It has been revealed to me that you people will be put to trial nearly like the trial of
Ad-Dajjal, in your graves. As for the true believer or a Muslim (the sub-narrator is not sure as to
which of the two (words Asma' had said) he will say, 'Muhammad came with clear signs from Allah,
and we responded to him (accepted his teachings) and believed (what he said)' It will be said (to him)
'Sleep in peace; we have known that you were a true believer who believed with certainty.' As for a
hypocrite or a doubtful person, (the sub-narrator is not sure as to which word Asma' said) he will say,
'I do not know, but I heard the people saying something and so I said the same.' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 96, Hadith 18
Malik related to me from Nafi from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from
A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, that she bought a cushion which had pictures on it. When the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw it,
he stopped at the door and did not enter. She recognised disapproval
on his face and said, "Messenger of Allah, I turn in repentance to
Allah and His Messenger. What have I done wrong?" The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "What is the
meaning of this cushion?" She said, "I bought it for you to sit and
recline on." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "Those who make such pictures will be punished on the Day
of Rising. It will be said to them, 'Bring to life what you have
created'. Then he said, 'The angels do not enter a house in which
there are pictures.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 54, Hadith 8
Um Al-`Ala', an Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (ﷺ) said to me, "The
emigrants were distributed amongst us by drawing lots and we got in our share `Uthman bin Maz'un.
We made him stay with us in our house. Then he suffered from a disease which proved fatal when he
died and was given a bath and was shrouded in his clothes, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came I said, 'May Allah be
merciful to you, O Abu As-Sa'ib! I testify that Allah has honored you'. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'How do you
know that Allah has honored him?' I replied, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Let my father be sacrificed for you!
On whom else shall Allah bestow His honor?' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'No doubt, death came to him. By
Allah, I too wish him good, but by Allah, I do not know what Allah will do with me though I am
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). ' By Allah, I never attested the piety of anyone after that."
Al-Laith also narrated as above.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 23, Hadith 6
This news has reached me that 'Abdullah b. 'Amr al-'As would pass by us during the Hajj season, so you meet him and ask him (about religious matters) as he has acquired great knowledge from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). I thus met him and asked him about things which he narrated from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). And amongst these the one he mentioned was that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge from people directly but he takes away the scholars and consequently takes away (knowledge) along with them and leaves amongst persons the ignorant as their leaders who deliver religious verdicts without (adequate) knowledge and themselves go astray and lead others astray. 'Urwa said: When I narrated this to 'A'isha, she deemed it too much (to believe) and thus showed reluctance to accept that (as perfectly true) and said to, 'Urwa: Did he ('Abdullah b. 'Amr) say to you that he had heard Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: ('Urwa had forgotten to ask this from 'Abdullah b. 'Amr). So when it was the next year, she ('A'isha) said to him ('Urwa): Ibn Amr has come (for Hajj), so meet him. talk to him and ask him about this hadith that he narrated to You (last year on the occasion of the Hajj) pertaining to knowledge. He ('Urwa), said: So I met him, and asked about it and he narrated to me exactly like one that he had narrated (to me) for the first time. So when I informed her ('A'isha) about that, she said: I do not think but this that he has certainly told the truth and I find that be has neither made any addition to it, nor missed anything from it.
Sahih Muslim Book 47, Hadith 25
Yahya said that Malik spoke about an investor paying qirad money
to an agent who made a profit and then wanted to take his share of the
profit and the investor was away. He said, "He should not take any of
it unless the investor is present. If he takes something from it, he
is responsible for it until it is accounted for in the division of the
capital."
Malik said, "It is not permitted for the parties
involved in a qirad to account and divide property which is away from
them until the capital is present, and the investor is given the
principal in full. Then they divide the profit into their agreed
portions."
Malik spoke about a man taking qirad money, and
buying goods with it while he had a debt. His creditors sought and
found him while he was in a city away from the investor, and he had
profitable merchandise whose good quality was clear. They wanted him
to sell the merchandise for them so that they could take his share of
the profit. Malik said, "None of the profit of the qirad is taken
until the investor is present. He takes his principal and then the
profit is divided mutually between them."
Malik spoke about
an investor who put qirad money with an agent and he used it and had a
profit. Then the principal was set aside and the profit divided. He
took his share and added the share of the investor to his principal in
the presence of witnesses he had called. Malik said, "It is not
permitted to divide the profit unless the investor is present. If he
has taken something here turns it until the investor has received the
principal in full. Then what remains is divided into their respective
portions."
Malik spoke about an investor who put qirad money
with an agent. The agent used it and then came to the investor and
said, "This is your portion of the profit, and I have taken the like
of it for myself, and I have retained your principal in full." Malik
said, "I do not like that, unless all the capital is present, the
principal is there and he knows that it is complete and he receives
it. Then they divide the profit between them. He returns the principal
to him if he wishes, or he keeps it. The presence of the principal is
necessary out of fear that the agent might have lost some of it, and
so may want it not to be removed from him and to keep it in his hand."
Muwatta Malik Book 32, Hadith 15
"When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to pray Tahajjud, he said: Allahumma, lakal-hamdu anta nurus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna wa lakal-hamdu anta qayyamus-samawati wal ardi wa man fihinna wa lakal-hamdu, anta haqqun wa wa'duka haqqun wal jannatu haqqun wan-nuru haqqun wan-nabiyyuna haqqun wa Muhammadan haqqun, laka aslant wa 'alaika tawakkaltu wa bika amant. ( O Allah, to You be praise, You are the Light of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sustainer of the Heavens and the earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sovereign of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise; You are True, Your promise is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, the Hour is true, the Prophets are true and Muhammad is true. To You have I submitted, in You I put my trust and in You I have believed.'" Then (one of the narrators) Qutaibah mentioned some words the meaning of which was: "Wa bika khasamtu wa ilaika hakamtu, ighfirli ma quadrate wa ma akhkhartu wa ma a'lantu antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'khkhir, la ilaha illa anta wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (And with Your help I argue forward. There is no God but You and there is no power and no strength except with Allah).'"
