I went to Abu Wail to ask him (about those who had rebelled against `Ali). On that Abu Wail said,
"We were at Siffin (a city on the bank of the Euphrates, the place where me battle took place between
`Ali and Muawiya) A man said, "Will you be on the side of those who are called to consult Allah's
Book (to settle the dispute)?" `Ali said, 'Yes (I agree that we should settle the matter in the light of the
Quran)." ' Some people objected to `Ali's agreement and wanted to fight. On that Sahl bin Hunaif
said, 'Blame yourselves! I remember how, on the day of Al-Hudaibiya (i.e. the peace treaty between
the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Quraish pagans), if we had been allowed to choose fighting, we would have
fought (the pagans). At that time `Umar came (to the Prophet) and said, "Aren't we on the right (path)
and they (pagans) in the wrong? Won't our killed persons go to Paradise, and theirs in the Fire?" The
Prophet replied, "Yes." `Umar further said, "Then why should we let our religion be degraded and
return before Allah has settled the matter between us?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O the son of Al-Khattab!
No doubt, I am Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and Allah will never neglect me." So `Umar left the place angrily and
he was so impatient that he went to Abu Bakr and said, "O Abu Bakr! Aren't we on the right (path)
and they (pagans) on the wrong?" Abu Bakr said, "O the son of Al-Khattab! He is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and
Allah will never neglect him." Then Sura Al-Fath (The Victory) was revealed."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 365
The most beloved names to `Ali was Abu Turab, and he used to be pleased when we called him by it,
for none named him Abu Turab (for the first time), but the Prophet. Once `Ali got angry with (his
wife) Fatima, and went out (of his house) and slept near a wall in the mosque. The Prophet (ﷺ) came
searching for him, and someone said, "He is there, Lying near the wall." The Prophet (ﷺ) came to him
while his (`Ali's) back was covered with dust. The Prophet (ﷺ) started removing the dust from his back,
saying, "Get up, O Abu Turab!"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 228
Abu Bakr sent for me owing to the large number of casualties in the battle of Al-Yamama, while
`Umar was sitting with him. Abu Bakr said (to me), `Umar has come to my and said, 'A great number
of Qaris of the Holy Quran were killed on the day of the battle of Al-Yamama, and I am afraid that
the casualties among the Qaris of the Quran may increase on other battle-fields whereby a large part
of the Quran may be lost. Therefore I consider it advisable that you (Abu Bakr) should have the
Quran collected.' I said, 'How dare I do something which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not do?' `Umar said, By
Allah, it is something beneficial.' `Umar kept on pressing me for that till Allah opened my chest for
that for which He had opened the chest of `Umar and I had in that matter, the same opinion as `Umar
had." Abu Bakr then said to me (Zaid), "You are a wise young man and we do not have any suspicion
about you, and you used to write the Divine Inspiration for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). So you should search for
the fragmentary scripts of the Quran and collect it (in one Book)." Zaid further said: By Allah, if Abu
Bakr had ordered me to shift a mountain among the mountains from one place to another it would not
have been heavier for me than this ordering me to collect the Quran. Then I said (to `Umar and Abu
Bakr), "How can you do something which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not do?" Abu Bakr said, "By Allah, it is
something beneficial." Zaid added: So he (Abu Bakr) kept on pressing me for that until Allah opened
my chest for that for which He had opened the chests of Abu Bakr and `Umar, and I had in that
matter, the same opinion as theirs.
So I started compiling the Quran by collecting it from the leafless stalks of the date-palm tree and
from the pieces of leather and hides and from the stones, and from the chests of men (who had
memorized the Quran). I found the last verses of Sirat-at-Tauba: ("Verily there has come unto you an
Apostle (Muhammad) from amongst yourselves--' (9.128-129) ) from Khuza`ima or Abi Khuza`ima
and I added to it the rest of the Sura. The manuscripts of the Quran remained with Abu Bakr till Allah
took him unto Him. Then it remained with `Umar till Allah took him unto Him, and then with Hafsa
bint `Umar.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 93, Hadith 53
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: "Sami Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd, mil'as-samawati wa mil'al-ardi wa mil'ama shi'ta min shai'in ba'd. Athlath-thana'i wal-majdi khairu ma qalal-'abdu wa kulluna laka 'abdun la mani'a lima a'taita wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd (Allah hears the one who praises Him; Our Lord, to You be the Praise, filling the heavens, filling the Earth, and filling whatever else You will, Lord of Glory and Majesty, the truest thing a slave had said, and we are all slaves to You. None can withhold what You grant, nor can the possession of an owner benefit him before You.)"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 12, Hadith 40
There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet stood for a long time, accompanied by the people. He then bowed, then raised his head, then he bowed and then he raised his head, and again he bowed and prayed two rak'ahs of prayer. In each rak'ah he bowed three times. After bowing for the third time he prostrated himself. He stood for such a long time that some people became unconscious on that occasion and buckets of water had to be poured on them. When he bowed, he said, Allah is most great; and when he raised his head, he said, Allah listens to him who praises Him, till the sun became bright. then he said: The sun and the moon are not eclipsed on account of anyone's death or on account of anyone's birth, but they are two of Allah's signs, He produces dread in His servants by means of them. When they are eclipsed, hasten to prayer
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 3, Hadith 17
he informed him, ans some men among the elders of his people, that "Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayysah set out for Khaibar because of some problem that had arisen. Someone came to Muhayysah, and he told him that 'Abdullah bin Sahl had been killed and thrown into a pit or well. He came to the Jews and said: "By Allah, you killed him." They said: "By Allah, we did not kill him." Then he went baack to his people and told them about that. Then he and his brother Huwayysah, who was older than him, and 'Abdur-Rahman bin Sahl, came (to the prophet). Muhayysah, who was the one who had been at Khaibar, bnegan to speak, but the Messenger of Allah said: "Let the elder speak first." So Huwayysah spoke, then Muhayysah spoke. The Messenger of Allah said: "Either (the Jews) will pay the Diyah for your companion, or war will be declared on them." The Messenger of Allah sent a letter to that effect (to the Jews) and they wrote back saying: "By Allah, we did not kill him." The Messenger of Allah and 'Abdur-Rahman: "Will you swear an oath establishing your claim to the blood money of your companion?" They said: "No." He said: "Should the Jews swear an oath for you?" They said: "They are not Muslims." So the Messenger of Allah paid it himself, and he sent one hundred she-camels to their abodes. Sahl said: "A red she-camel from among them kicked me."
