Abu Bakr invited a group of people and told me, "Look after your guests." Abu Bakr added, I am
going to visit the Prophet (ﷺ) and you should finish serving them before I return." `Abdur-Rahman said,
So I went at once and served them with what was available at that time in the house and requested
them to eat." They said, "Where is the owner of the house (i.e., Abu Bakr)?" `Abdur-Rahman said,
"Take your meal." They said, "We will not eat till the owner of the house comes." `Abdur-Rahman
said, "Accept your meal from us, for if my father comes and finds you not having taken your meal yet,
we will be blamed severely by him, but they refused to take their meals . So I was sure that my father
would be angry with me. When he came, I went away (to hide myself) from him. He asked, "What
have you done (about the guests)?" They informed him the whole story. Abu Bakr called, "O `Abdur
Rahman!" I kept quiet. He then called again. "O `Abdur-Rahman!" I kept quiet and he called again,
"O ignorant (boy)! I beseech you by Allah, if you hear my voice, then come out!" I came out and said,
"Please ask your guests (and do not be angry with me)." They said, "He has told the truth; he brought
the meal to us." He said, "As you have been waiting for me, by Allah, I will not eat of it tonight."
They said, "By Allah, we will not eat of it till you eat of it." He said, I have never seen a night like this
night in evil. What is wrong with you? Why don't you accept your meals of hospitality from us?" (He
said to me), "Bring your meal." I brought it to him, and he put his hand in it, saying, "In the name of
Allah. The first (state of fury) was because of Satan." So Abu Bakr ate and so did his guests.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 167
when the Messenger of Allah would stand for the obligatory prayer, he would raise his hands to the level of his shoulder, and he would do this lā manjā minka wa lā malja’a illā ilaik, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilaik).” Then he would recite, then when he would bow, his speech in his Ruku`, would be to say: “O Allah, to You have I bowed, and in You have I believed, and to You have I submitted (in Islam), and You are my Lord. My hearing, my sight, my brain and my bones are humbled to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds all that exists (Allāhumma laka raka`tu wa bika āmantu wa laka aslamtu wa anta rabb ī. Khasha`a sam`ī wa baṣarī wa mukhkhī wa `aẓmī lillāhi, rabbil-`ālamīn).” Then, when he raised his head from Ruku he would say: “Allah hears the one who praises him (Sami`a Allāhu liman ḥamidah).” Then he would follow it with: “O Allah, our Lord, to You is praise filling the heavens and the earth and filling whatever You wish of things afterward (Allāhumma rabbanā wa lakal-ḥamdu mil’as-samāwāti wal-arḍi, wa mil’a mā shi’ta min shay’in ba`d.).” Then, when prostrated he would say in his prostration: “O Allah, to You have I prostrated, and in You have I believed, and to You have I submitted (in Islam), and You are my Lord, my face has prostrated to the One that created it, and granted its hearing and sight, Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators (Allāhumma laka sajadtu wa bika āmantu wa laka aslamtu wa anta rabbī, sajada wajhi lilladhī khalaqahū wa shaqqa sam`ahū wa baṣarahū, tabārak Allāhu ahsanul-khāliqīn).” When he was finished with his Salat, we would say: “O Allah, forgive me what I have done, before and after, and what I have hidden, and what I have done openly, and You are my Deity, there is none worthy of worship except You (Allāhummaghfirlī mā qaddamtu wa mā akhkhartu wa mā asrartu wa mā a`lantu, wa anta ilāhī lā ilāha illā ant).”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 54
While I was sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle (ﷺ), a person came there dragging another one with the help of a strap and said: Allah's Messenger, this man has killed my brother. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to him: Did you kill him? And the other man said: (In case he did not make a confession of this, I shall brine, a witness against him). He (the murderer) said: Yes, I have killed him. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Why did you kill him? He said: I and he won striking down the leaves of a tree and he abused me and enraged me, and to I struck his head with an axe and killed him, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Have you anything with you to pay blood-wit on your behalf? He said: I do not possess any property but this robe of mine and this axe of mine. He (the Holy, Prophet) said: Do you think your people will pay ransom for you? He said: I am more insignificant among my people than this (that I would not be able to get this benefit from my tribe). He (the Holy Prophet) threw the strap towards him (the claimant of the blood-wit) saying: Take away your man. The man took him away, and as he returned, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: If he kills him, he will be like him. He returned and said: Allah's Messenger, it has reached me that you have said that" If he killed him, he would be like him." I caught hold of him according to your command, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Don't you like that he should take upon him (the burden) of your sin and the sin of your companion (your brother)? He said: Allah's Apostle, why not? The Messenger of Allah (may peace be. upon him) said: If it is so, then let it be. He threw away the strap (around the offender) and set him free.
Sahih Muslim Book 28, Hadith 46
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar
would say, "A man should not have intercourse with a slave girl except
one whom, if he wished, he could sell, if he wished, he could give
away, if he wished, he could keep, if he wished, he could do with her
what he wanted ."
Malik said that a man who bought a slave-
girl on condition that he did not sell her, give her away, or do
something of that nature, was not to have intercourse with her. That
was because he was not permitted to sell her or to give her away, so
if he did not own that from her, he did not have complete ownership of
her because an exception had been made concerning her by the hand of
someone else. If that sort of condition entered into it, it was a
messy situation, and the sale was not recommended.
Muwatta Malik Book 31, Hadith 6
"Banu Murrah bin 'Ubaid sent me to bring the Sadaqah from their wealth of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I arrived with him in Al-Madinah and found him sitting between the Muhajirin and the Ansar." He said: "Then he took my hand and brought me to the home of Umm Salamah and he said: 'Do you have any food?' So a bowl containing a lot of Tharid with pieces of meat was brought to us, and presented for us to eat from it. So I began wandering my around it while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ate from what was in front of him. He grabbed my right hand with his left hand, then he said: 'O 'Ikrash! Eat from one spot, for indeed the food is one.' Then a plate containing various dried dates" - or fresh dates - 'Ubaidullah (a narrator) was not sure. He said: "I began eating what was in front of me, while the hand of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) roamed about the plate. He said: 'O 'Ikrash! Eat from wherever you like, for indeed it is not all from the same variety.' Then water was brought, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) washed his hands, and with the wetness of his hands he wiped his face, his forearms, and his head, and he said: 'O Ikrash! This is the Wudu' for that which has been altered by fire.'"
This Hadith is Gharib, we do not know of it except through the narration of Al-'Ala' bin Al-Fadl, and Al-Ala'was alone with this narration, and there is more in the story in the Hadith. And we do not know a Hadith from the Prophet (ﷺ) by 'Ikrash except this.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 25, Hadith 64
“The Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ)
came out one day to the people, and a man came to him and said:
‘O
Messenger of Allah, when will the Hour be?’ He said: ‘The
one who is
asked about it does not know more than the one who is
asking. But I
will tell you of its portents. When the slave woman
gives birth to her
mistress, that is one of its portents. When the
barefoot and naked
become leaders of the people, that is one of its
portents. When
shepherds compete in constructing buildings, that is
one of its
portents. (The Hour) is one of five (things) which no one
knows except
Allah.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited the
words: “Verily,
Allah, with Him (alone) is the knowledge of the
Hour, He sends down
the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs.
(to the end of the
Verse).”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 119
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) visited me in my illness which brought me near death in the year of Hajjat-ul-Wada' (Farewell Pilgrimage). I said: Allah's Messenger, you can well see the pain with which I am afflicted and I am a man possessing wealth, and there is none to inherit me except only one daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my property as Sadaqa? He said: No. I said: Should I give half (of my property) as Sadaqa? He said: No. He (further) said: Give one-third (in charity) and that is quite enough. To leave your heirs rich is better than to leave them poor, begging from people; that you would never incur an expense seeking therewith the pleasure of Allah, but you would be rewarded therefor, even for a morsel of food that you put in the mouth of your wife. I said: Allah's Messenger. would I survive my companions? He (the Holy Prophet) said: If you survive them, then do such a deed by means of which you seek the pleasure of Allah, but you would increase in your status (in religion) and prestige; you may survive so that people would benefit from you, and others would be harmed by you. (The Holy Prophet) further said: Allah, complete for my Companions their migration, and not cause them to turn back upon their heels. Sa'd b. Khaula is, however, unfortunate. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) felt grief for him as he had died in Mecca.
Sahih Muslim Book 25, Hadith 6
When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) died and Abu Bakr was elected as a Caliph after him, some of the Arabs
reverted to disbelief, `Umar said to Abu Bakr, "How dare you fight the people while Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
said, I have been ordered to fight the people till they say 'None has the right to be worshipped but
Allah' And whoever says: None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.' waves his wealth and his
life from me unless he deserves a legal punishment lusty, and his account will be with Allah! Abu
Bakr said, "By Allah, I will fight him who discriminates between Zakat and prayers, for Zakat is the
Compulsory right to be taken from the wealth By Allah, if they refuse to give me even a tying rope
which they use to give to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), I would fight them for withholding it." `Umar said, 'By
Allah, It was nothing, except I saw that Allah had opened the chest of Abu Bakr to the fight, and I
came to know for certain that was the truth."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 96, Hadith 16
Three traditions have been established because of Barira: `Aisha intended to buy her and set her free,
but Barira's masters said, "Her wala' will be for us." `Aisha mentioned that to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) who
said, "You could accept their condition if you wished, for the wala is for the one who manumits the
slave." Barira was manumitted, then she was given the choice either to stay with her husband or leave
him; One day Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) entered `Aisha's house while there was a cooking pot of food boiling on
the fire. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked for lunch, and he was presented with bread and some extra food from the
home-made Udm (e.g. soup). He asked, "Don't I see meat (being cooked)?" They said, "Yes, O Allah's
Apostle! But it is the meat that has been given to Barira in charity and she has given it to us as a
present." He said, "For Barira it is alms, but for us it is a present."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 70, Hadith 58
We set out in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on the day (of the battle) of Hunain. When we faced the
enemy, the Muslims retreated and I saw a pagan throwing himself over a Muslim. I turned around and
came upon him from behind and hit him on the shoulder with the sword He (i.e. the pagan) came
towards me and seized me so violently that I felt as if it were death itself, but death overtook him and
he released me. I followed `Umar bin Al Khattab and asked (him), "What is wrong with the people
(fleeing)?" He replied, "This is the Will of Allah," After the people returned, the Prophet (ﷺ) sat and said,
"Anyone who has killed an enemy and has a proof of that, will posses his spoils." I got up and said,
"Who will be a witness for me?" and then sat down. The Prophet (ﷺ) again said, "Anyone who has killed
an enemy and has proof of that, will possess his spoils." I (again) got up and said, "Who will be a
witness for me?" and sat down. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said the same for the third time. I again got up, and
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O Abu Qatada! What is your story?" Then I narrated the whole story to him. A
man (got up and) said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! He is speaking the truth, and the spoils of the killed man
are with me. So please compensate him on my behalf." On that Abu Bakr As-Siddiq said, "No, by
Allah, he (i.e. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ) will not agree to give you the spoils gained by one of Allah's Lions
who fights on the behalf of Allah and His Apostle." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Abu Bakr has spoken the
truth." So, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) gave the spoils to me. I sold that armor (i.e. the spoils) and with its price I
bought a garden at Bani Salima, and this was my first property which I gained after my conversion to
Islam.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 57, Hadith 50
the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When one of you leaves his bed then returns to it, then let him brush it off with the edge of his Izar three times, for indeed, he does not know what succeeded him upon it after him. When he lies down, let him say: ‘In Your Name, my Lord, I lay my side down, and in Your Name I raise it. And if You take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if You release it, then protect it with that which You protect Your righteous worshipers (Bismika rabbī waḍa`tu janbī wa bika arfa`uhu, fa’in amsakta nafsī farḥamhā wa in arsaltahā faḥfaẓhā bimā taḥfaẓu bihī `ibādakaṣ-ṣāliḥīn)’ And when he awakens, let him say: All praise is due to Allah, Who healed me in my body, and returned to me my soul, and permitted me to remember Him (Al-ḥamdulillāh alladhī `āfānī fī jasadī wa radda `alayya rūḥī wa adhina lī bidhikrih).’”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 32
"I heard Mujahid narrating from Abu Ayyash Az-Zuraqi"- Shu'bah said: "He had written it for me, and I read it before him, and I heard him narrating it; rather, I even memorized it." Ibn Bashshar said: "I memorized it from the book"- "The Prophet (ﷺ) was drawing up ranks facing the enemy in 'Usfan when the idolaters were led by Khalid bin Al-Walid. The Prophet (ﷺ) led them in praying Zuhr. The idolaters said: 'They have a prayer after this that is dearer to them than their wealth and sons.' Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led them in praying 'Asr. He divided them into two rows, behind him. He led them all in bowing, then when they raised their heads he led the row that was closest to him in prostrating, while the others remained standing. When they raised their heads from prostration, the second row prostrated, as they had already bowed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Then the front row moved forward, so each of them took the place of his companion. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led them all in bowing, then when they raised their heads from bowing, the row that was closest to him prostrated while the others remained standing, then when they had finished prostrating, the others prostrated, then the Prophet (ﷺ) said the taslim for all of them together.
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 18, Hadith 21
`Ali bin Abi Talib sent a piece of gold not yet taken out of its ore, in a tanned leather container to
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) distributed that amongst four Persons: 'Uyaina bin Badr, Aqra bin
H`Abis, Zaid Al-Khail and the fourth was either Alqama or Amir bin at-Tufail. On that, one of his
companions said, "We are more deserving of this (gold) than these (persons)." When that news
reached the Prophet (ﷺ) , he said, "Don't you trust me though I am the truth worthy man of the One in the
Heavens, and I receive the news of Heaven (i.e. Divine Inspiration) both in the morning and in the
evening?" There got up a man with sunken eyes, raised cheek bones, raised forehead, a thick beard, a
shaven head and a waist sheet that was tucked up and he said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Be afraid of Allah."
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Woe to you! Am I not of all the people of the earth the most entitled to fear
Allah?" Then that man went away. Khalid bin Al-Wahd said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Shall I chop his
neck off?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No, for he may offer prayers." Khalid said, "Numerous are those who
offer prayers and say by their tongues (i.e. mouths) what is not in their hearts." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "I
have not been ordered (by Allah) to search the hearts of the people or cut open their bellies." Then the
Prophet looked at him (i.e. that man) while the latter was going away and said, "From the offspring of
this (man there will come out (people) who will recite the Qur'an continuously and elegantly but it
will not exceed their throats. (They will neither understand it nor act upon it). They would go out of
the religion (i.e. Islam) as an arrow goes through a game's body." I think he also said, "If I should be
present at their time I would kill them as the nations a Thamud were killed."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 378
Prayer passed through three stages. And out people narrated to us that Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said; it is to my liking that the prayer of Muslims or believers should be united (i.e., in congregation), so much so that I intended to send people to the houses to announce the time of prayer; and I also resolved that I should order people to stand at (the tops of) the forts and announce the time of the prayer for Muslims; and they struck the bell or were about to strike the bell (to announce the time for prayer). Then came a person from among the Ansar who said: Messenger of Allah, when I returned from you, as I saw your anxiety. I saw (in sleep) a person with two green clothes on him; he stood on the mosque and called (people) to prayer. He then sat down for a short while and stood up and pronounced in a like manner, except that he added: “The time for prayer has come”. If the people did not call me (a liar), and according to the version of Ibn al-Muthanna, if you did not call me (a liar). I would say that I was awake; I was awake; I was not asleep. The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said: According to the version of Ibn al-Muthanna, Allah has shown you a good (dream). But the version of ‘Amr does not have the words: Allah has shown you a good (dream). Then ask Bilal to pronounce the ADHAN (to call to the prayer). ‘Umar (in the meantime) said: I also had a dream like the one he had. But as he informed earlier. I was ashamed (to inform). Our people have narrated to us: when a person came (to the mosque during the prayer in congregation), he would ask (about the RAKAHS of prayer), and he would be informed about the number of RAKAHS already performed. They would stand (in prayer) along with the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him): some in standing position; others bowing; some sitting and some praying along with the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him).
Ibn al-Muthanna reported from ‘Amr from Hussain b. Abi Laila, saying ; Until Mu’adh came. Shu’bah said ; I heard it from Hussain who said : I shall follow the position (in the prayer in which I find him (the prophet)). . . you should do in a similar way.
Abu Dawud said: I then turned to the tradition reported by ‘Amr b. Marzuq he said; then Ma’adh came and they (the people) hinted at him. Shu’bah said; I heard it from hussain who said: Mu’adh then said; I shall follow the position (in the prayer when I join it) in which I find him (the prophet). He then said: Mu’adh has prayer when I join it in which I find him (the prophet). He then said: MU’adh has introduced for you a SUNNAH (a model behaviour), so you should do in a like manner.
He said; our people have narrated to us; when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Madina, he commanded them (the people) to keep fast for three days. Thereafter the Quranic verses with regard to the fasts during Ramadan were revealed. But they were people who were not accustomed to keep fast ; hence the keeping of the fasts was hard for them; so those who could not keep fast would feed an indigent; then the month”. The concession was granted to the patient and the traveler; all were commanded to keep fast.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 2, Hadith 116
