(On `Id) We used to forbid our virgins to go out (for `Id prayer). A lady came and stayed at the fortress
of Bani Khalaf. She mentioned that her sister was married to one of the companions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
who participated in twelve Ghazawats along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and her sister was with him in six of
them. She said, "We used to dress the wounded and look after the patients." She (her sister) asked
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , "Is there any harm for a woman to stay at home if she doesn't have a veil?" He said,
"She should cover herself with the veil of her companion and she should take part in the good deeds
and in the religious gatherings of the believers." When Um 'Atiyya came, I asked her. "Did you hear
anything about that?" Um 'Atiyya said, "Bi Abi" and she never mentioned the name of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
without saying "Bi Abi" (i.e. 'Let my father be sacrificed for you'). We asked her, "Have you heard
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying so and so (about women)?" She replied in the affirmative and said, "Let my
father be sacrificed for him. He told us that unmarried mature virgins who stay often screened or
unmarried young virgins and mature girls who stay often screened should come out and take part in
the good deeds and in the religious gatherings of the believers. But the menstruating women should
keep away from the Musalla (praying place)." I asked her, "The menstruating women?" She replied,
"Don't they present themselves at `Arafat and at such and such places?"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 25, Hadith 133
AbdurRahman ibn al-Akhnas said that when he was in the mosque, a man mentioned Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sa'id ibn Zayd got up and said: I bear witness to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that I heard him say: Ten persons will go to Paradise: The Prophet (ﷺ) will go to Paradise, AbuBakr will go to Paradise, Umar will go to Paradise, Uthman will go to Paradise, Ali will go to Paradise, Talhah will go to Paradise: az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam will go to paradise, Sa'd ibn Malik will go to Paradise, and AbdurRahman ibn Awf will go to Paradise. If I wish, I can mention the tenth. The People asked: Who is he: So he kept silence. The again asked: Who is he: He replied: He is Sa'id ibn Zayd.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 42, Hadith 54
An Ansari man quarreled with Az-Zubair about a canal in the Harra which was used for irrigating
date-palms. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), ordering Zubair to be moderate, said, "O Zubair! Irrigate (your land) first
and then leave the water for your neighbor." The Ansari said, "Is it because he is your aunt's son?" On
that the color of the face of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) changed and he said, "O Zubair! Irrigate (your land) and
withhold the water till it reaches the walls that are between the pits around the trees." So, Allah's
Apostle gave Zubair his full right. Zubair said, "By Allah, the following verse was revealed in that
connection": "But no, by your Lord They can have No faith Until they make you judge In all disputes
between them." (4.65)
(The sub-narrator,) Ibn Shihab said to Juraij (another sub-narrator), "The Ansar and the other people
interpreted the saying of the Prophet, 'Irrigate (your land) and withhold the water till it reaches the
walls between the pits around the trees,' as meaning up to the ankles."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 42, Hadith 10
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was fond of honey and sweet edible things and (it was his habit) that after finishing
the `Asr prayer he would visit his wives and stay with one of them at that time. Once he went to
Hafsa, the daughter of `Umar and stayed with her more than usual. I got jealous and asked the reason
for that. I was told that a lady of her folk had given her a skin filled with honey as a present, and that
she made a syrup from it and gave it to the Prophet (ﷺ) to drink (and that was the reason for the delay). I
said, "By Allah we will play a trick on him (to prevent him from doing so)." So I said to Sa`da bint
Zam`a "The Prophet (ﷺ) will approach you, and when he comes near you, say: 'Have you taken Maghafir
(a bad-smelling gum)?' He will say, 'No.' Then say to him: 'Then what is this bad smell which i smell
from you?' He will say to you, 'Hafsa made me drink honey syrup.' Then say: Perhaps the bees of that
honey had sucked the juice of the tree of Al-`Urfut.' I shall also say the same. O you, Safiyya, say the
same." Later Sa`da said, "By Allah, as soon as he (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) stood at the door, I was about to say
to him what you had ordered me to say because I was afraid of you." So when the Prophet (ﷺ) came near
Sa`da, she said to him, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Have you taken Maghafir?" He said, "No." She said.
"Then what is this bad smell which I detect on you?" He said, "Hafsa made me drink honey syrup."
She said, "Perhaps its bees had sucked the juice of Al-`Urfut tree." When he came to me, I also said
the same, and when he went to Safiyya, she also said the same. And when the Prophet (ﷺ) again went to
Hafsa, she said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Shall I give you more of that drink?" He said, "I am not in need of
it." Sa`da said, "By Allah, we deprived him (of it)." I said to her, "Keep quiet." '
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 68, Hadith 18
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr that
Abdullah ibn Waqid said, "The Messengerof Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, forbade eating the meat from sacrificial animals
after three days."
Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr said, "I mentioned
that to Amra bint Abd ar-Rahman, and she affirmed that he had spoken
the truth as she had heard A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, say, 'Some people from the desert came
at the time of the sacrifice in the time of the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Store up for three
days, and give what is left over as sadaqa.' "
She said that
afterwards some one said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, that people had been accustomed to make use
of their sacrificial animals, melting the fat and curing the skins.
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
"What about that?" They said, "You have forbidden the meat of
sacrificial animals after three days." The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I only forbade you for the
sake of the people who were coming to you. Eat, give sadaqa and store
up."
By these people, he meant the poor people who were
coming to Madina.
Muwatta Malik Book 23, Hadith 7
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that his
father said, "Once when I was young I said to A'isha, umm al-muminin,
'Have you seen the saying of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, "Safa and
Marwa are among the waymarks of Allah, so whoever does hajj or umra to
the House, there is no harm in his going between them," so it follows
that there should be no harm for some one who does not go between
them.'
A'isha said, 'No. If it were as you say, there would
be no harm in his not going between them. This ayat was only revealed
about the Ansar. They used to make pilgrimage to Manat, and Manat was
an idol near Qudayd, and they used to avoid going between Safa and
Marwa, and when Islam came they asked the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, about this and Allah, the Blessed
and Exalted, revealed, "Safa and Marwa are among the waymarks of
Allah, so whoever does hajj or umra to the House, there is no harm in
his going between them. " ' "
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 133
Yahya related to me from Malik from a man of Kufa that Umar ibn
al-Khattab wrote to a lieutenant of an army which he had sent out, "I
have heard that it is the habit of some of your men to chase an
unbeliever till he takes refuge in a high place. Then one man tells
him in Persian not to be afraid, and when he comes up to him, he kills
him. By He in whose hand my self is, if I knew someone who had done
that, I would strike off his head."
Yahya said, I heard Malik
say, "This tradition is not unanimously agreed upon, so one does not
act on it."
Malik when asked whether safe conduct promised by
gesture had the same status as that promised by speech, said, "Yes. I
think that one can request an army not to kill someone by gesturing
for safe conduct, because as far as I am concerned, gesture has the
same status as speech. I have heard that Abdullah ibn Abbas said,
'There is no people who betray a pledge, but that Allah gives their
enemies power over them.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 21, Hadith 12
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Qasim
that his father used to go into Makka by night when he was doing umra
and do tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa and delay the
shaving until the morning, but he would not go back to the House and
do tawaf again until he had shaved his head.
Abd ar-Rahman
added, "Sometimes he would enter the mosque and do the witr prayer
there without actually going near the House."
Malik said,
"At-tafath is shaving the head, putting on normal clothes and things
of that nature."
Yahya said that Malik was asked whether a
man who forgot to shave (his head) at Mina during the hajj could shave
in Makka, and he said, "That is permissible, but I prefer the shaving
to be done at Mina."
Malik said, "What we are all agreed upon
here (in Madina) is that no-one should shave his head or cut his hair
until he has killed his sacrificial animal, if he has one, and things
that are haram for him do not become halal for him until he leaves
ihram at Mina on the day of sacrifice. This is because Allah, the
Blessed and Exalted, says, 'Do not shave yourheads until the
sacrificial animal has reached its destination. ' "
