I was a man who was more given than others to sexual intercourse with women. When the month of Ramadan came, I feared lest I should have intercourse with my wife, and this evil should remain with me till the morning. So I made my wife like my mother's back to me till the end of Ramadan. But one night when she was waiting upon me, something of her was revealed. Suddenly I jumped upon her. When the morning came I went to my people and informed them about this matter.
I said: Go along with me to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
They said: No, by Allah. So I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him and informed him of the matter.
He said: Have you really committed it, Salamah? I said: I committed it twice, Messenger of Allah. I am content with the Commandment of Allah, the Exalted; so take a decision about me according to what Allah has shown you.
He said: Free a slave. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth, I do not possess a neck other than this: and I struck the surface of my neck.
He said: Then fast two consecutive months. I said: Whatever I suffered is due to fasting.
He said: Feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates.
I said: By Him Who sent you with truth, we passed the night hungry; there was no food in our house.
He said: Then go to the collector of sadaqah of Banu Zurayq; he must give it to you. Then feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates; and you and your family eat the remaining dates. Then I came back to my people, and said (to them): I found with you poverty and bad opinion; and I found with the Prophet (ﷺ) prosperity and good opinion. He has commanded me to give alms to you.
Ibn al-Ala' added: Ibn Idris said: Bayadah is a sub-clan of Banu Zurayq.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 13, Hadith 39
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Safwan ibn
Abdullah ibn Safwan that it was said to Safwan ibn Umayya, "Whoever
does not do hijra is ruined." So Safwan ibn Umayya went to Madina and
slept in the mosque with his cloak as a pillow. A thief came and took
his cloak and Safwan grabbed hold of the thief and brought him to the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to
him, "Did you steal this cloak?" He said, "Yes." So the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered that his hand
be cut off. Safwan said to him, "I did not intend this. It is his as
sadaqa." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "Why didn't you do it before bringing him to me?"
Muwatta Malik Book 41, Hadith 30
While we were in a funeral procession in Baqi Al-Gharqad, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came and sat down, and
we sat around him. He had a small stick in his hand and he bent his head and started scraping the
ground with it. He then said, "There is none among you, and no created soul but has his place written
for him either in Paradise or in the Hell-Fire, and also has his happy or miserable fate (in the
Hereafter) written for him." A man said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Shall we depend upon what is written for
us and give up doing (good) deeds? For whoever among us is destined to be fortunate (in the
Hereafter), will join the fortunate peoples and whoever among us is destined to be miserable will do
such deeds as are characteristic of the people who are destined to misery." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Those
who are destined to be happy (in the Hereafter) will find it easy and pleasant to do the deeds
characteristic of those destined to happiness, while those who are to be among the miserable (in the
Hereafter), will find it easy to do the deeds characteristic of those destined to misery." Then he recited: 'As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and believes in the Best reward from Allah,' (92.5-6)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 470
While Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was prostrating (as stated below).
Narrated `Abdullah bin Mas`ud:
Once the Prophet (ﷺ) was offering prayers at the Ka`ba. Abu Jahl was sitting with some of his
companions. One of them said to the others, "Who amongst you will bring the Abdominal contents
(intestines, etc.) of a camel of Bani so and so and put it on the back of Muhammad, when he
prostrates?" The most unfortunate of them got up and brought it. He waited till the Prophet (ﷺ) prostrated
and then placed it on his back between his shoulders. I was watching but could not do any thing. I
wish I had some people with me to hold out against them. They started laughing and falling on one
another. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was in prostration and he did not lift his head up till Fatima (Prophet's
daughter) came and threw that (camel's Abdominal contents) away from his back. He raised his head
and said thrice, "O Allah! Punish Quraish." So it was hard for Abu Jahl and his companions when the
Prophet invoked Allah against them as they had a conviction that the prayers and invocations were
accepted in this city (Mecca). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah! Punish Abu Jahl, `Utba bin Rabi`a, Shaiba
bin Rabi`a, Al-Walid bin `Utba, Umaiya bin Khalaf, and `Uqba bin Al Mu'it (and he mentioned
the seventh whose name I cannot recall). By Allah in Whose Hands my life is, I saw the dead bodies
of those persons who were counted by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in the Qalib (one of the wells) of Badr.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 4, Hadith 106
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)s said to me, "Will you relieve me from Dhul-Khalasa? Dhul-Khalasa was a house (of
an idol) belonging to the tribe of Khath'am called Al-Ka`ba Al-Yama-niya. So, I proceeded with one
hundred and fifty cavalry men from the tribe of Ahmas, who were excellent knights. It happened that I
could not sit firm on horses, so the Prophet (ﷺ) , stroke me over my chest till I saw his finger-marks over
my chest, he said, 'O Allah! Make him firm and make him a guiding and rightly guided man.' " Jarir
proceeded towards that house, and dismantled and burnt it. Then he sent a messenger to Allah's
Apostle informing him of that. Jarir's messenger said, "By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, I did
not come to you till I had left it like an emancipated or gabby camel (i.e. completely marred and
spoilt)." Jarir added, "The Prophet (ﷺ) asked for Allah's Blessings for the horses and the men of Ahmas
five times."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 56, Hadith 229
Sulaiman bin Buraidah reported on the authority of his father. When the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) appointed a Commander over an Army or a detachment, he instructed him to fear Allaah himself and consider the welfare of the Muslims who were with him. He then said “When you meet the polytheists who are your enemy, summon them tone of three things and accept whichever of them they are willing to agree to, and refrain from them. Summon them to Islam and if they agree, accept it from them and refrain from them. Then summon them to leave their territory and transfer to the abode of the Emigrants and tell them that if they do so, they will have the same rights and responsibilities as the Emigrants, but if they refuse and choose their own abode, tell them that they will be like the desert Arabs who are Muslims subject to Allaah’s jurisdiction which applies to the believers, but will have no spoil or booty unless they strive with the Muslims. If they refuse demand jizyah (poll tax) from them, if they agree accept it from them and refrain from them. But if they refuse, seek Alaah’s help and fight with them. When you invade the fortress and they (its people) offer to capitulate and have the matter referred to Allaah’s jurisdiction, do not grant this, for you do not know whether or not you will hit on Allaah’s jurisdiction regarding them. But let them capitulate and have the matter refereed to your jurisdiction and make a decision about them later on as you wish.
Sufyan (bin ‘Uyainah) said thah ‘Alqamah said “I mentioned this tradition to Muqatil bin Habban, He said “Muslim narrated it to me.” Abu Dawud said “He is Ibn Haidam narrated from Al Nu’man in Muqqarin from the Prophet (ﷺ) like the tradition of Sulaiman bin Buraidah.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 15, Hadith 136
`Ali bin Abu Talib came out of the house of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) during his fatal illness. The people asked,
"O Abu Hasan (i.e. `Ali)! How is the health of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) this morning?" `Ali replied, "He has
recovered with the Grace of Allah." `Abbas bin `Abdul Muttalib held him by the hand and said to him,
"In three days you, by Allah, will be ruled (by somebody else ), And by Allah, I feel that Allah's
Apostle will die from this ailment of his, for I know how the faces of the offspring of `Abdul Muttalib
look at the time of their death. So let us go to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and ask him who will take over the
Caliphate. If it is given to us we will know as to it, and if it is given to somebody else, we will inform
him so that he may tell the new ruler to take care of us." `Ali said, "By Allah, if we asked Allah's
Apostle for it (i.e. the Caliphate) and he denied it us, the people will never give it to us after that. And
by Allah, I will not ask Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) for it."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 467
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) contracted marriage and he went to his wife. My mother Umm Sulaim prepared hais and placed it in an earthen vessel and said: Anas, take it to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and say: My mother has sent that to you and she offers greetings to you, and says that it is a humble gift for you on our behalf, Messenger of Allah. So I went along with it to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: My mother offers you salutations, and says that it is a humble gift for you on our behalf. He said: Place it here, and then said: Go and invite on my behalf so and so and anyone whom you meet, and he even named some persons. He (Anas) said: I invited whom he had named and whom I met. I (one of the narrators) said: I said to Anas: How many (persons) were there? He (Anas) said: They were about three hundred persons. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (said to me): Anas, bring that earthen vessel. They (the guests) then began to enter until the courtyard and the apartment were fully packed. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Make a circle of ten (guests), and every person should eat from that nearest to him. They began to eat, until they ate to their fill. A group went out (after eating the food), and another group came in until all of them had eaten. He (the Holy Prophet) said to me: Anas, lift it (the earthen vessel), so I lifted it, but I could not assess whether it had more (food) when I placed it (before Allah's Messenger) or when I lifted it (after the people had been served out of it). A group among them (the guests) began to talk in the house of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was sitting and his wife had been sitting with her face turned towards the wall. It was troublesome for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out and greeted his wives. He then returned. When they (the guests) saw that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had returned they thought that it (their overstay) was something troublesome for him. He (the narrator) said: They hastened towards the door and all of them went out. And there came Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and he hung a curtain and went in, and I was sitting in his apartment and he did not stay but for a short while. He then came to me and these verses were revealed. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came out and recited them to the people:" O you who believe, enter not the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, not waiting for its cooking being finished-but when you are invited, enter, and when you have taken food, disperse not seeking to listen to talk. Surely this gives the Prophet trouble", to the end of verse (xxxiii. 53). (Al-Ja'd said that Anas stated: I am the first amongst the people to hear these verses), and henceforth the wives of the Apostle (ﷺ) began to observe seclusion (al-hijab).
Sahih Muslim Book 16, Hadith 110
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard some of the
people of knowledge say, "If someone goes into ihram to do umra and
then wants to go into ihram to do hajj as well, he can do so, as long
as he has not done tawaf of the House and s'ay between Safa and Marwa.
This is what Abdullah ibn 'Umar did when he said, 'If I am blocked
from the House we shall do what we did when we were with the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' He then turned to
his companions and said, 'It is the same either way. I call you to
witness that I have decided in favour of hajj and umra together. ' "
Malik said, "The companions of the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, went into ihram to do umra in the
year of the farewell hajj, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, said to them, 'Anyone that has a sacrificial
animal with him should go into ihram to do hajj and umra together, and
he should not come out of ihram until he has finished both.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 43
One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) appeared before the public so a man came to him and then said: Prophet of Allah, what is Iman? Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His meeting, His Messengers and that you affirm your faith in the Resurrection hereafter. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Islam? He replied: Al-Islam is that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him and you establish obligatory prayer and you pay the obligatory alms (Zakat) and you observe the fast of Ramadan. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Ihsan? He replied: That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and for if you fail to see Him. He said: Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour (of Doom)? He replied: The one who is asked about it is no better informed than the inquirer, however I will narrate some of its signs to you. When the slave-girl will give birth to her master, then that is from its signs. When the naked, barefooted would become the chiefs of the people, then that is from its signs. When the shepherds of the black (camels) would exult themselves in buildings, then that is from its signs. (The Hour is) Among one of the five which no one knows but Allah. Then he recited (the verse): "Verily Allah! with Him alone is the knowledge of the Hour and He it is Who sends down the rain and knows that which is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it shall earn tomorrow, and a soul knows not in what land it shall die. Verily Allah is Knowing, Aware."
He (Abu Huraira) said: Then the person turned back and went away. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Bring that man back to me. They went to bring him back, but they saw nothing there. Upon this the Messenger of Allah remarked: he was Gabriel, who came to teach the people their religion.
Sahih Muslim Book 1, Hadith 5
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent us who were three-hundred riders under the command of Abu Ubaida bin Al-
Jarrah in order to watch the caravan of the Quraish pagans. We stayed at the seashore for half a month
and were struck with such severe hunger that we ate even the Khabt (i.e. the leaves of the Salam, a
thorny desert tree), and because of that, the army was known as Jaish-ul-Khabt. Then the sea threw
out, an animal (i.e. a fish) called Al-`Anbar and we ate of that for half a month, and rubbed its fat on
our bodies till our bodies returned to their original state (i.e. became strong and healthy). Abu Ubaida
took one of its ribs, fixed it on the ground; then he went to the tallest man of his companions (to let
him pass under the rib). Once Sufyan said, "He took a rib from its parts and fixed it, and then took a
man and camel and they passed from underneath it (without touching it). " Jabir added: There was a
man amongst the people who slaughtered three camels and then slaughtered another three camels and
then slaughtered other three camels, and then Abu 'Ubaida forbade him to do so.
Narrated Abu Salih: Qais bin Sa`d said to his father. "I was present in the army and the people were
struck with severe hunger." He said, "You should have slaughtered (camels) (for them)." Qais said, "I
did slaughter camels but they were hungry again. He said, "You should have slaughtered (camels)
again." Qais said, "I did slaughter (camels) again but the people felt hungry again." He said, "You
should have slaughtered (camels) again." Qais said, "I did slaughter (camels) again, but the people
again felt hungry." He said, "You should have slaughtered (camels) again." Qais said, "But I was
forbidden (by Abu 'Ubaida this time).
