I said to Ibn Abbas that Nauf al-Bikali was of the opinion that Moses (peace be upon him), the Apostle of Bani Isra'il, was not the same who accompanied Khadir, whereupon he said: The enemy of Allah tells a lie. I heard Ubayy b. Ka'b say: Moses (peace be upon him) stood up to give sermon to the people of Isra'il. He was asked as to who amongst the people has the best knowledge, whereupon he said: I have the best knowledge. Thereupon Allah was annoyed with him that he did not attribute (the best knowledge) to Him. He revealed to him: A servant amongst My servants is at the junction of two rivers who has more knowledge than yours. Moses said: How can I meet him? It was said to him: Carry a fish in the large basket and the place where you find it missing there you will find him. Thereupon Moses proceeded forth along with a young man (Yusha'). Joshua b. Nun and Moses (peace be upon him) put the fish in the basket and there went along with him the young man (Yusha') until they came to a certain rock and Moses and his companion went to sleep and the fish stirred in that basket and fell into the ocean and Allah stopped the current of water like a vault until the way was made for the fish. Moses and his young companion were astonished and they walked for the rest of the day and the night and the friend of Moses forgot to inform him of this incident. When it was morning, Moses (peace be upon him) said to the young man: Bring for us the breakfast for we are dead tired because of this journey, and they did not feel exhausted until they had passed that place where they had been commanded (to stay). He said: Don't you know that when we reached the Sakhra (rock) I forgot the fish and nothing made me forget it but Satan that I could not remember it? How strange is it that the fish found a way in the river? Moses said: That was what we had been aiming at. Then both of them retraced their steps until they reached Sakhra; there they saw a man covered with a cloth. Moses greeted him. Khadir said to him: Where is as-Salam in our country.? He said: I am Moses, whereupon he (Khadir) said: You mean the Moses of Bani Isra'il? He said: Yes. He (Khadir) said: You have a knowledge out of the knowledge of Allah which in fact Allah imparted to you and about that I know nothing and I have knowledge out of Allah's knowledge which He imparted to me and about that you do not know. Moses (peace be upon him) said to him: May I follow you so that you may teach me that with which you have been taught righteousness. He said: You will not be able to bear with me; how you will be able to bear that about which you do not know? Moses said: Thou wilt find me patient, nor shalt I disobey you in aught. Khadir said to him: If you were to follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I myself speak to you about it. He said: Yes. So Khadir and Moses set forth on the bank of the river that there came before them a boat. Both of them talked to them (the owners of the boat) so that they might carry both of them.
They had recognised Khadir and they carried them free. Khadir thereupon took hold of a plank in the boat and broke it away. Moses said: These people have carried us without any charge and you attempt to break their boat so that the people sailing in the boat may drown. This is (something) grievous that you have done. He said: Did I not say that you would not bear with me? He said: Blame me not for what I forgot and be not hard upon what I did. Then both of them got down from the boat and began to walk along the coastline that they saw a boy who had been playing with other boys. Khadir pulled up his head and killed him. Moses said: Have you killed an innocent person who is in no way guilty of slaying another? You have done something horrible. Thereupon he said: Did I not say to you that you will not be able to bear with me? He (Moses) said: This (act) is more grievous than the first one. He (Moses) further said. If I ask you about anything after this, keep not company with me, then you would no doubt find (a plausible) excuse for this. Then they both walked on until they reached the inhabitants of a village. They asked its inhabitants for food but they refused to entertain them as their guests. They found in it a wall which had been bent on one side and was about to fall. Khadir set it right with his own hand. Moses, said to him: It is the people to whom we came but they showed us no hospitality and they did not serve us food. If you wish you can get wages for it. He (Khadir) said: This is the parting of ways between me and you. Now I wish to reveal to you the significance of that for which you could not bear with me. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said. May Allah have mercy upon Moses! I wish if Moses could show patience and a (fuller) story of both of them could have been told. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said that the first thing which Moses said was out of forgetfulness. Then there came a sparrow until it perched on the wall of the boat and took water from the ocean. Thereupon, Khadir said: My knowledge and your knowledge in comparison with the knowledge of Allah is even less than the water taken by the sparrow in its beak in comparison to the water of the ocean, and Sa'id b. Jubair used to recite (verses 79 and 80 of Sura Kahf) in this way: There was before them a king who used to seize every boat by force which was in order, the boy was an unbeliever.
Sahih Muslim Book 43, Hadith 221
Yahya related to me from Malik that Ibn Shihab used to say, "Some
one who catches a raka of the jumua prayer should pray another one
with it." Ibn Shihab said, "That is the sunna."
Malik said,
"I saw the people of knowledge in our city doing that. That is because
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
'Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer.' "
Malik said, concerning some one who was in a crowd on the day of
jumua and did the ruku but was not able to go into sajda until the
imam had risen or finished his prayer, "If he is able to do the sajda
and has already done the ruku then he should do the sajda when the
people stand up. If he is unable to do thesajda until after the imam
has finished the prayer, then I prefer that he begins the prayeragain
and does the four rakas of dhuhr."
Muwatta Malik Book 5, Hadith 12
The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions assumed Ihram for Hajj and none except the Prophet (ﷺ) and Talha had
the Hadi with them. `Ali had come from Yemen and he had the Hadi with him. He (`Ali) said, "I have
assumed Ihram with an intention like that of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has assumed it." The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered his
companions to intend the Ihram with which they had come for `Umra, to perform the Tawaf of the
Ka`ba (and between Safa and Marwa), to get their hair cut short and then to finish their Ihram with the
exception of those who had the Hadi with them. They asked, "Shall we go to Mina and the private
organs of some of us are dribbling (if we finish Ihram and have sexual relations with our wives)?" The
Prophet heard that and said, "Had I known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi. If I
did not have the Hadi with me I would have finished my Ihram." `Aisha got her menses and
performed all the ceremonies (of Hajj) except the Tawaf . So when she became clean from her
menses, and she had performed the Tawaf of the Ka`ba, she said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! You (people)
are returning with both Hajj and `Umra and I am returning only with Hajj!" So, he ordered `Abdur
Rahman bin Abu Bakr to go with her to at-Tan`im. Thus she performed `Umra after the Hajj in the
month of Dhi-l-Hijja. Suraqa bin Malik bin Ju'sham met the Prophet (ﷺ) at Al-`Aqaba (Jamrat-ul 'Aqaba)
while the latter was stoning it and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Is this permissible only for you?" The
Prophet replied, "No, it is for ever (i.e. it is permissible for all Muslims to perform `Umra before
Hajj."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 26, Hadith 12
We went out with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from Mecca making for Medina. When we were near Azwara', he alighted, then raised his hands, and made supplication to Allah for a time, after which he prostrated himself, remaining a long time in prostration. Then he stood up and raised his hands for a time, after which he prostrated himself, remaining a long time in prostration.
He then stood up and raised his hands for a time, after which he prostrated himself. Ahmad mentioned it three times.
He then said: I begged my Lord and made intercession for my people, and He gave me a third of my people, so I prostrated myself in gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and begged my Lord for my people, and He gave me a third of my people, so I prostrated myself in gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and begged my Lord for my people and He gave me the remaining third, so I prostrated myself in gratitude to my Lord.
Abu Dawud said: When Ahmad b. Salih narrated this tradition to us, he omitted the name of Ash'ath b. Ishaq, but Musa b. Sahl al-Ramli narrated it to us through him.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 15, Hadith 299
" 'Umar delivered a Khutbah to us at Al-Jabiyah. He said: 'O you people! Indeed I have stood among you as the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) stood among us, and he said: "I order you (to stick to) my Companions, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then lying will spread until a man will take an oath when no oath was sought from him, and a witness will testify when his testimony was not sought. Behold! A man is not alone with a woman but the third of them is Ash-Shaitan. Adhere to the Jama'ah, beware of separation, for indeed Ash-Shaitan is with one, and he is further away from two. Whoever wants the best place in Paradise, then let him stick to the Jama'ah. Whoever rejoices with his good deeds and grieves over his evil deeds, then that is the believer among you.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 33, Hadith 8
`Abdullah bin `Umar said, "Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was busy (at the time of the `Isha'), so the prayer
was delayed so much so that we slept and woke up and slept and woke up again. The Prophet (ﷺ) came
out and said, 'None amongst the dwellers of the earth but you have been waiting for the prayer." Ibn
`Umar did not find any harm in praying it earlier or in delaying it unless he was afraid that sleep might
overwhelm him and he might miss the prayer, and sometimes he used to sleep before the `Isha' prayer.
Ibn Juraij said, "I said to `Ata', 'I heard Ibn `Abbas saying: Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) delayed the `Isha'
prayer to such an extent that the people slept and got up and slept again and got up again. Then `Umar
bin Al-Khattab I, stood up and reminded the Prophet (ﷺ) I of the prayer.' `Ata' said, 'Ibn `Abbas said: The
Prophet came out as if I was looking at him at this time, and water was trickling from his head and he
was putting his hand on his head and then said, 'Hadn't I thought it hard for my followers, I would
have ordered them to pray (`Isha' prayer) at this time.' I asked `Ata' for further information, how the
Prophet had kept his hand on his head as he was told by Ibn `Abbas. `Ata' separated his fingers
slightly and put their tips on the side of the head, brought the fingers downwards approximating them
till the thumb touched the lobe of the ear at the side of the temple and the beard on the face. He neither
slowed nor hurried in this action but he acted like that. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Hadn't I thought it hard for
my followers I would have ordered them to pray at this time."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 9, Hadith 47
While I was sitting in the Mosque of Medina, there entered a man (Abdullah bin Salam) with signs of
solemnity over his face. The people said, "He is one of the people of Paradise." He prayed two light
rak`at and then left. I followed him and said, "When you entered the Mosque, the people said, 'He is
one of the people of Paradise.' " He said, "By Allah, one ought not say what he does not know; and I
will tell you why. In the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) I had a dream which I narrated to him. I saw as if I
were in a garden." He then described its extension and greenery. He added: In its center there was an
iron pillar whose lower end was fixed in the earth and the upper end was in the sky, and at its upper
end there was a (ring-shaped) hand-hold. I was told to climb it. I said, "I can't." "Then a servant came
to me and lifted my clothes from behind and I climbed till I reached the top (of the pillar). Then I got
hold of the hand-hold, and I was told to hold it tightly, then I woke up and (the effect of) the handhold
was in my hand. I narrated al I that to the Prophet (ﷺ) who said, 'The garden is Islam, and the handhold
is the Most Truth-worthy Hand-Hold. So you will remain as a Muslim till you die." The narrator
added: "The man was `Abdullah bin Salam."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 63, Hadith 38
Let me tell you something. O Commander, which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said on the day following, the Conquest which my ears heard and my heart has retained, and my eyes saw as he spoke it. He praised Allah and extolled Him and then said: Allah, not men, has made Mecca sacred; so it is not permissible for any person believing in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it, or lop a tree in it. If anyone seeks a concession on the basis of fighting of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), tell him that Allah permitted His Messenger, but not you, and He gave him permission only for an hour on one day, and its sacredness was restored on the very day like that of yesterday. Let him who is present convey the information to him who is absent. It was said to Abu Shuraih: What did Amr say to you? He said: I am better informed of that than you, Abu Shuraih, but the sacred territory does not grant protection to one who is disobedient, or one who runs away after shedding blood, or one who runs away after committing
Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 508
"I went on a campaign with the Messenger of Allah riding a camel of ours," then he quoted the whole Hadih. Then he said words to the effect that: "The camel got tried and the Prophet hit it, so it became energetic and came to the front of the army. The Prophet said: 'O Jabir, I see that your camel has become energetic.' I said: "It is because of your blessing, O Messenger of Allah,' He said: 'Sell it to me, and you can ride it till we arrive (in Al-Madinah). 'So I sold it to him. I was in great need of it myself but I felt too shy to refuse. When we finished our campaign, and we were close to Al-Madinah, I asked his permission to go on ahead. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am newly married.' He said; 'Have you married a virgin or a previously married woman?' I said: 'A previously married woman, O Messenger of Allah. 'Abdullah bin 'Arm died and left behind young druthers, and I did not like to bring to them someone who was like them, so I married a previously married woman who could teach the, and rise them with good manners.' So he gave me permission, and said to me; 'Go to When I arrived, I told my maternal uncle that I had sold the camel and he scolded me. When the Messenger of Allah came, I brought the camel to him, and he gave me the price of the camel, and the camel, and share (of the spoils of war) with the rest of the people.
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 44, Hadith 190
Yahya related to me from Malik from Sharik ibn Abdullah ibn Abi
Namir that Anas ibn Malik said, "A man came to the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of
Allah, our animals are dying and our camels are too weak to travel, so
make dua to Allah.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, made dua, and it rained on us from one jumua to the
next."
Anas continued, "Then a man came to the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger
of Allah, our houses have fallen down, the paths are blocked, and our
flocks are dying.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, said, 'O Allah, (only) the mountain and hill-tops,
the valley bottoms, and the places where trees grow.' "
Anas
added, "It cleared away from Madina like a garment being removed."
Malik said, about a man who missed the prayer of asking for
rain but caught the khutba, and wished to pray in the mosque, or in
his house when he returned, "He is free to do so, or not, as he
wishes."
Muwatta Malik Book 13, Hadith 3
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) employed an employee (to collect Zakat). The employee returned after completing his
job and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! This (amount of Zakat) is for you, and this (other amount) was given
to me as a present." The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "Why didn't you stay at your father's or mother's house
and see if you would be given presents or not?" Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up in the evening after the
prayer, and having testified that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and praised and
glorified Allah as He deserved, he said, "Now then ! What about an employee whom we employ and
then he comes and says, 'This amount (of Zakat) is for you, and this (amount) was given to me as a
present'? Why didn't he stay at the house of his father and mother to see if he would be given presents
or not? By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, none of you will steal anything of it (i.e. Zakat)
but will bring it by carrying it over his neck on the Day of Resurrection. If it has been a camel, he will
bring it (over his neck) while it will be grunting, and if it has been a cow, he will bring it (over his
neck), while it will be mooing; and if it has been a sheep, he will bring it (over his neck) while it will
be bleeding." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "I have preached you (Allah's Message)." Abu Humaid said, "Then
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his hands so high that we saw the whiteness of his armpits."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 83, Hadith 15
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from a man of
the Bani'd-Dil called Busr ibn Mihjan from his father Mihjan that he
was in a gathering with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, and the call to prayer was made. The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, rose and prayed and
then returned. Mihjan remained sitting and did not pray with him. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
"What prevented you from praying with the people? Aren't you a
muslim?" He said, "Of course, Messenger of Allah, but I have already
prayed with my family." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, said, "When you come, pray with the people, even
if you have prayed already."
Muwatta Malik Book 8, Hadith 9
Yahya related. to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Amra
bint Abd ar-Rahman told him from Habiba bint Sahl al-Ansari that she
had been the wife of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas. The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out for the dawn
prayer, and found Habiba bint Sahl at his door in the darkness. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to
her, "Who is this?" She said, "I am Habiba bint Sahl, Messenger of
Allah." He said, "What do you want?" She said, "That Thabit ibn Qays
and I separate." When her husband, Thabit ibn Qays came, the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "This
is Habiba bint Sahl. She mentioned what Allah willed that she
mention." Habiba said, "Messenger of Allah, all that he has given me
is with me!" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said to Thabit ibn Qays, "Take it from her," and he took it
from her, and she stayed in the house of her family.
