I said to `Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, and I was at that time a young boy, "How do you interpret the
Statement of Allah:
"Verily, Safa and Marwa (i.e. two mountains at Mecca) are among the Symbols of Allah."
So it is not harmful of those who perform the Hajj to the House of Allah) or perform the Umra, to
ambulate (Tawaf) between them. In my opinion it is not sinful for one not to ambulate (Tawaf)
between them." `Aisha said, "Your interpretation is wrong for as you say, the Verse should have been:
"So it is not harmful of those who perform the Hajj or Umra to the House, not to ambulate (Tawaf)
between them.' This Verse was revealed in connection with the Ansar who (during the Pre-Islamic
Period) used to visit Manat (i.e. an idol) after assuming their Ihram, and it was situated near Qudaid
(i.e. a place at Mecca), and they used to regard it sinful to ambulate between Safa and Marwa after
embracing Islam. When Islam came, they asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about it, whereupon Allah revealed:--
"Verily, Safa and Marwa (i.e. two mountains at Mecca) are among the Symbols of Allah. So it is not
harmful of those who perform the Hajj of the House (of Allah) or perform the Umra, to ambulate
(Tawaf) between them." (2.158)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 65, Hadith 22
“A Jewish man said in the
marketplace of Al-Madinah: ‘By the One Who chose Musa above all of
mankind.’ An Ansari man raised his hand and slapped him. He said:
‘How
dare you say this when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is among
us?’
Mention of that was made to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and
he said:
‘Allah says: “And the trumpet will be blown, and all who
are in the
heavens and all who are on the earth will swoon away,
except him whom
Allah wills. Then it will be blown a second time, and
behold they will
be standing, looking on (waiting).” I will
be the first one to
raise his head, and I will see Musa holding on to
one of the pillars
of the Throne, and I do not know whether he will
have raised his head
before me, or he will be one of those whom Allah
exempts. And whoever
says that I am better than Yunus bin Matta, he
is lying.”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 37, Hadith 175
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'Nations were displayed before me; one or two prophets would pass by along
with a few followers. A prophet would pass by accompanied by nobody. Then a big crowd of people
passed in front of me and I asked, Who are they Are they my followers?" It was said, 'No. It is Moses
and his followers It was said to me, 'Look at the horizon.'' Behold! There was a multitude of people
filling the horizon. Then it was said to me, 'Look there and there about the stretching sky! Behold!
There was a multitude filling the horizon,' It was said to me, 'This is your nation out of whom seventy
thousand shall enter Paradise without reckoning.' "Then the Prophet (ﷺ) entered his house without telling
his companions who they (the 70,000) were. So the people started talking about the issue and said, "It
is we who have believed in Allah and followed His Apostle; therefore those people are either
ourselves or our children who are born m the Islamic era, for we were born in the Pre-lslamic Period
of Ignorance.'' When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard of that, he came out and said. "Those people are those who do
not treat themselves with Ruqya, nor do they believe in bad or good omen (from birds etc.) nor do
they get themselves branded (Cauterized). but they put their trust (only) in their Lord " On that
'Ukasha bin Muhsin said. "Am I one of them, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes." Then
another person got up and said, "Am I one of them?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Ukasha has anticipated you."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 76, Hadith 25
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "I am the chief of the children of Adam on the Day of Judgement and I am not boasting, and in my hand is the banner of praise and I am not boasting, and there has been no Prophet since Adam or other than him, except that he is under my banner. And I am the first for whom the earth will split open, and I am not boasting." He said: "The people will be frightened by three frights. So they will come to Adam saying: 'You are our father Adam, so intercede for us with your Lord.' So he says: 'I committed a sin for which I was expelled to the earth, so go to Nuh.' So they will come to Nuh and he will say: 'I supplicated against the people of the earth, so they were destroyed. So go to Ibrahim.' So they will go to Ibrahim, and he says: 'I lied three times.'" Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "He did not lie except defending Allah's religion." "So go to Musa.' So they will come to Musa, and he will say: 'I took a life. So go to 'Eisa. So they go to 'Eisa and he says: 'I was worshiped besides Allah. So go to Muhammad (ﷺ).'" He said: "So they will come to me, and I will go to them." (One of the narrators) Ibn Ju'dan said: "Anas said: 'It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he is saying: "So I will take hold of a ring of a gate of Paradise to rattle it, and it will be said: 'Who is there?' It will be said: 'Muhammad.' They will open it for me, and welcome me saying, 'Welcome.' I will fall prostrate and Allah will inspire me with statements of gratitude and praise and it will be said to me: 'Raise your head, ask and you shall be given, intercede, and your intercession shall be accepted, speak, and your saying shall be heard.' And that is Al-Maqam Al-Mahmud about which Allah said: It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqaman-Mahmud (17:79)." Sufyan said: "None of it is from Anas except this sentence: 'I will take hold of a ring of a gate of Paradise to rattle it.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 47, Hadith 200
Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said that
Muhammad ibn Ibrahim at-Taymi had informed him that Abu Salama ibn Abd
ar-Rahman said "Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Abdal-Yaghuth used to
sit with us and he had a white beard and hair. One day he came to us
and he had dyed them red, and the people said to him, 'This is
better.' He said. 'A'isha the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, sent her slave girl Nukhayla to me yesterday. She
swore that my hair would be dyed and she informed me that Abu Bakr as-
Siddiq used to dye his hair.' "
Yahya said that he heard
Malik say about dyeing the hair black, 'I have not heard anything
certain on that, and other colours than that are preferable to me."
Yahya said, "Not to dye at all is permitted, Allah willing,
and there is no constraint on people concerning it."
Yahya
said that he had heard Malik say, "There is no clear indication in
this hadith that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, did not dye his hair. Had the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, dyed his hair, A'isha would have sent a
message to that effect to Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Aswad."
Muwatta Malik Book 51, Hadith 8
Allah's Messenger, will we be able to see our Lord on the Day of Judgment? He said: Do you feel any difficulty in seeing the sun in the noon when there is no cloud over it? They said: No. He again said: Do you feel any difficulty in seeing the moon on the fourteenth night when there is no cloud over it? They said: No. Thereupon he said: By Allah Who is One in Whose Hand is my life. you will not face any difficulty in seeing your Lord but only so much as you feel in seeing one of them. Then Allah would sit in judgment upon the servant and would say: O, so and so, did I not honour you and make you the chief and provide you the spouse and subdue for you horses, camels, and afforded you an opportunity to rule over your subjects? He would say: Yes. And then it would be said: Did you not think that you would meet Us? And he would say: No. Thereupon He (Allah) would say: Well, We forget you as you forgot Us. Then the second person would be brought for judgment. (And Allah would) say: 0, so and so. did We not honour you and make you the chief and make you pair and subdue for you horses and camels and afford you an opportunity to rule over your subjects? He would say: Yes, my Lord. And He (the Lord) would say: Did you not think that you would be meeting Us? And he would say: No. And then He (Allah) would say: Well, I forget you today as you forgot Us. Then the third -one would be brought and He (Allah) would say to him as He said before. And he (the third person) would say: O, my Lord, I affirmed my faith in Thee and in Thy Book and in Thy Messenger and I observed prayer and fasts and gave charity, and he would speak in good terms like this as he would be able to do. And He (Allah) would say: Well, We will bring our witnesses to you. And the man would think in his mind who would bear witness upon him and then his mouth would be sealed and it would be said to his thighs, to his flesh and to his bones to speak and his thighs. flesh and bones would bear witness to his deeds and it would be done so that he should not be able to make any excuse for himself and he would be a hypocrite and Allah would be annoyed with him.
Sahih Muslim Book 55, Hadith 22
When the delegates of the tribe of Hawazin came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and they requested him to return their
properties and captives. The Prophet (ﷺ) stood up and said to them, "I have other people with me in this
matter (as you see) and the most beloved statement to me is the true one; you may choose either the
properties or the prisoners as I have delayed their distribution." The Prophet (ﷺ) had waited for them for
more than ten days since his arrival from Ta'if. So, when it became evident to them that the Prophet (ﷺ)
was not going to return them except one of the two, they said, "We choose our prisoners." The
Prophet got up amongst the people and glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and said, "Then
after, these brethren of yours have come to us with repentance, and I see it logical to return them the
captives. So, whoever amongst you likes to do that as a favor, then he can do it, and whoever of you
likes to stick to his share till we recompense him from the very first war booty which Allah will give
us, then he can do so (i.e. give up the present captives)." The people unanimously said, "We do that
(return the captives) willingly." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "We do not know which of you has agreed to it and
which have not, so go back and let your leaders forward us your decision." So, all the people then
went back and discussed the matter with their leaders who returned and informed the Prophet (ﷺ) that all
the people had willingly given their consent to return the captives. This is what has reached us about
the captives of Hawazin. Narrated Anas that `Abbas said to the Prophet, "I paid for my ransom and
`Aqil's ransom."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 49, Hadith 23
Malik related to me from Nafi that Safiyya bint Abi Ubayd
informed him that a man who had had intercourse with a virgin slave-
girl and made her pregnant was brought to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. He
confessed to fornication, and he was not muhsan. Abu Bakr gave the
order and he was flogged with the hadd punishment. Then he was
banished to Fadak, (thirty miles from Madina).
Malik spoke
about a person who confessed to fornication and then retracted it and
said, "I didn't do it. I said that for such-and-such a reason," and he
mentioned the reason. Malik said, "That is accepted from him and the
hadd is not imposed on him. That is because the hadd is what is for
Allah, and it is only applied by one of two means, either by a clear
proof which establishes guilt or by a confession which is persisted in
so that the hadd is imposed. If someone persists in his confession,
the hadd is imposed on him."
Malik said, "I have not seen the
people of knowledge exiling slaves who have committed adultery."
Muwatta Malik Book 41, Hadith 13
I heard `Ali saying, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent me, Az-Zubair and Al-Miqdad somewhere saying, 'Proceed
till you reach Rawdat Khakh. There you will find a lady with a letter. Take the letter from her.' " So,
we set out and our horses ran at full pace till we got at Ar-Rawda where we found the lady and said (to
her). "Take out the letter." She replied, "I have no letter with me." We said, "Either you take out the
letter or else we will take off your clothes." So, she took it out of her braid. We brought the letter to
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and it contained a statement from Hatib bin Abi Balta a to some of the Meccan pagans
informing them of some of the intentions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O Hatib!
What is this?" Hatib replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Don't hasten to give your judgment about me. I was
a man closely connected with the Quraish, but I did not belong to this tribe, while the other emigrants
with you, had their relatives in Mecca who would protect their dependents and property . So, I wanted
to recompense for my lacking blood relation to them by doing them a favor so that they might protect
my dependents. I did this neither because of disbelief not apostasy nor out of preferring Kufr
(disbelief) to Islam." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), said, "Hatib has told you the truth." `Umar said, O Allah's
Apostle! Allow me to chop off the head of this hypocrite." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Hatib participated in
the battle of Badr, and who knows, perhaps Allah has already looked at the Badr warriors and said,
'Do whatever you like, for I have forgiven you."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 56, Hadith 216
A man came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asking him about Islam, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "You have to offer five
compulsory prayers in a day and a night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more compulsory
prayers for me?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No, unless you like to offer Nawafil (i.e. optional prayers)."
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then added, "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man said,
"Am I to fast any other days?' Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No, unless you wish to observe the optional fast
voluntarily." Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) told him about the compulsory Zakat. The man asked, "Do I have
to give anything besides?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No, unless you wish to give in charity voluntarily."
So, the man departed saying, "By Allah I will neither do more nor less than that." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said,
"If he has said the truth he will be successful."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 52, Hadith 39
Al-Adawi that he said to `Amr bin Sa`id while the latter was sending troops in batches to Mecca, "O
chief! Allow me to tell you a statement which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said on the second day of the Conquest
of Mecca. My two ears heard it and my heart remembered it and my two eyes saw him when he said
it. He (i.e. the Prophet) praised Allah and then said, 'Mecca has been made a sanctuary by Allah and
not by the people, so it is not lawful for a person, who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed
blood in it, or to cut its trees and if someone asks the permission to fight in Mecca because Allah's
Apostle was allowed to fight in it, say to him; Allah permitted His Apostle and did not allow you, and
even he (i.e. the Apostle) was allowed for a short period of the day, and today its (Mecca's sanctity has
become the same as it was before (of old) so those who are present should inform those who are
absent (this Hadith)." Then Abu Shuraih, was asked, "What did `Amr say to you? Abu Shuraih said,
"He said, "I knew that better than you, O Abu Shuraih! The Haram (i.e. Mecca) does not give refuge
to a sinner or a fleeing murderer or a person running away after causing destruction."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 328
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to the tribe of Bani Amr b. Auf in order to bring reconciliation amongst (its members), and It was a time of prayer. The Mu'adhdhin came to Abu Bakr and said: Would you lead the prayer in case I recite takbir (tahrima, with which the prayer begins)? He (Abu Bakr) said: Yes. He (the narrator) said: He (Abu Bakr) started (leading) the prayer. The people were engaged in observing prayer when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) happened to come there and made his way (through the people) till he stood in a row. The people began to clap (their hands), but Abu Bakr paid no heed (to it) in prayer. When the people clapped more vigorously, he (Abu Bakr) then paid heed and saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) there. (He was about to withdraw when) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) signed to him to keep standing at his place. Abu Bakr lifted his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had commanded him and then Abu Bakr withdrew himself till he stood in the midst of the row and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stepped forward and led the prayer. When (the prayer) was over, he (the Holy Prophet) said: 0 Abu Bakr, what prevented you from standing (at that place) as I ordered you to do? Abu Bakr said: It does not become the son of Abu Quhafa to lead prayer before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said (to the people) around him: What is it that I saw you clapping so vigorously? (Behold) when anything happens in prayer, say: Subha Allah, for when you would utter it, it would attract the attention, while clapping of hands is meant for women.
Sahih Muslim Book 4, Hadith 111
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A prophet amongst the prophets carried out a holy military expedition, so he said
to his followers, 'Anyone who has married a woman and wants to consummate the marriage, and has
not done so yet, should not accompany me; nor should a man who has built a house but has not
completed its roof; nor a man who has sheep or shecamels and is waiting for the birth of their young
ones.' So, the prophet carried out the expedition and when he reached that town at the time or nearly at
the time of the `Asr prayer, he said to the sun, 'O sun! You are under Allah's Order and I am under
Allah's Order O Allah! Stop it (i.e. the sun) from setting.' It was stopped till Allah made him
victorious.
Then he collected the booty and the fire came to burn it, but it did not burn it. He said (to his men),
'Some of you have stolen something from the booty. So one man from every tribe should give me a
pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' (They did so and) the hand of a man got stuck over
the hand of their prophet. Then that prophet said (to the man), 'The theft has been committed by your
people. So all the persons of your tribe should give me the pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with
me.' The hands of two or three men got stuck over the hand of their prophet and he said, "You have
committed the theft.' Then they brought a head of gold like the head of a cow and put it there, and the
fire came and consumed the booty. The Prophet (ﷺ) added: Then Allah saw our weakness and disability,
so he made booty legal for us."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 57, Hadith 33
Yahya related to me from Malik, from AIqama ibn Abi AIqama, from
his mother, that A'isha, umm al-muminin, used to camp on the plain of
Arafa at a place called Namira, and then later she changed to another
place called al-Arak.
She said, ''A'isha, and those who were
with her, would say the talbiya while she was at the place where they
were camping, and then, when she had mounted and set out towards the
place of standing, she would stop doing so."
She continued,
''A'isha used to do umra when she was in Makka after the hajj was
over, in the month of Dhu'l-Hijja.Then she stopped doing that, and
instead would set out before the new moon of Muharram for al-J uhfa,
where she would stay until she saw the new moon, and then, when she
had seen the new moon, she would go into ihram to do umra."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 49
