"Abu Bakr went out to trade in Busra, one year before the Prophet (ﷺ) died, and with him were Nu`aiman and Suwaibit the sons of Harmalah, who had been present at Badr. Nu`aiman was in charge of the provisions, and Suwaibit was a man who joked a lot. He said to Nu`aiman: 'Feed me'. He said: 'Not until Abu Bakr comes'. He said: 'Then I will have to annoy you'. Then they passed by some people, and Suwaibit said to them: 'Will you buy a slave from me?' They said: 'Yes'. He said 'He is a slave who talks a lot and he will tell you, "I am a free man". If you are going to let him go when he says that to you, do not bother buying him.' They said: 'We will buy him from you.' So they bought him from him in return for ten young she-camels, then they brought him and tied a turban or a rope around his neck. Nu`aiman said: 'This man is making fun of you. I am a free man, not a slave.' They said: 'He has already told us about you; and they took him off.' Then Abu Bakr came and he (Suwaibit) told him about that. So he followed those people and returned their camels to them, and took Nu`aiman back. When they came to the Prophet (ﷺ) they told him what had happened, and the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions laughed about it for a year."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 33, Hadith 63
Shaqiq said, "While I was sitting with `Abdullah and Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari, the latter asked the
former, 'If a person becomes Junub and does not find water for one month, can he perform
Tayammum and offer his prayer?' (He applied in the negative). Abu Musa said, 'What do you say
about this verse from Sura "Al-Ma'ida": When you do not find water then perform Tayammum with
clean earth? `Abdullah replied, 'If we allowed it then they would probably perform Tayammum with
clean earth even if water were available but cold.' I said to Shaqiq, 'You then disliked to perform
Tayammum because of this?' Shaqiq said, 'Yes.' (Shaqiq added), "Abu Musa said, 'Haven't you heard
the statement of `Ammar to `Umar? He said: I was sent out by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) for some job and I
became Junub and could not find water so I rolled myself over the dust (clean earth) like an animal
does, and when I told the Prophet (ﷺ) of that he said, 'Like this would have been sufficient.' The Prophet (ﷺ)
(saying so) lightly stroked the earth with his hand once and blew it off, then passed his (left) hand over
the back of his right hand or his (right) hand over the back of his left hand and then passed them over
his face.' So `Abdullah said to Abu- Musa, 'Don't you know that `Umar was not satisfied with
`Ammar's statement?' "
Narrated Shaqiq: While I was with `Abdullah and Abu Musa, the latter said to the former, "Haven't
you heard the statement of `Ammar to `Umar? He said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent you and me out and I
became Junub and rolled myself in the dust (clean earth) (for Tayammum). When we came to Allah's
Apostle I told him about it and he said, 'This would have been sufficient,' passing his hands over his
face and the backs of his hands once only.' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 7, Hadith 14
That when the Ansar drew lots as to which of the emigrants should dwell with which of the Ansar, the
name of `Uthman bin Mazun came out (to be in their lot). Um Al-Ala further said, "Uthman stayed
with us, and we nursed him when he got sick, but he died. We shrouded him in his clothes, and Allah's
Apostle came to our house and I said, (addressing the dead `Uthman), 'O Abu As-Sa'ib! May Allah be
merciful to you. I testify that Allah has blessed you.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me, "How do you know that
Allah has blessed him?" I replied, 'I do not know O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! May my parents be sacrificed for
you.' Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'As regards `Uthman, by Allah he has died and I really wish him every
good, yet, by Allah, although I am Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), I do not know what will be done to him.' Um Al-
Ala added, 'By Allah I shall never attest the piety of anybody after him. And what Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)s
said made me sad." Um Al-Ala further said, "Once I slept and saw in a dream, a flowing stream for
`Uthman. So I went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and told him about it, he said, 'That is (the symbol of) his
deeds."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 52, Hadith 48
"In his Khutbah the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to praise Allah as He deserves to be praised, then he would say: 'Whomsoever Allah (SWT) guides, none can lead him astray, and whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.' Then he said: 'The Hour and I have been sent like these two.' Whenever he mentioned the Hour, his cheeks would turn red, and he would raise his voice and become angry, as if he were warning of an approaching army and saying: 'An army is coming to attack you in the morning, or in the evening!' (Then he said): 'Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, then these are my responsibility, and I am the most entitled to take care of the believers.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 19, Hadith 23
`Uqba bin `Amr said to Hudhaifa, "Won't you relate to us of what you have heard from Allah's
Apostle ?" He said, "I heard him saying, "When Al-Dajjal appears, he will have fire and water along
with him. What the people will consider as cold water, will be fire that will burn (things). So, if
anyone of you comes across this, he should fall in the thing which will appear to him as fire, for in
reality, it will be fresh cold water." Hudhaifa added, "I also heard him saying, 'From among the people
preceding your generation, there was a man whom the angel of death visited to capture his soul. (So
his soul was captured) and he was asked if he had done any good deed.' He replied, 'I don't remember
any good deed.' He was asked to think it over. He said, 'I do not remember, except that I used to trade
with the people in the world and I used to give a respite to the rich and forgive the poor (among my
debtors). So Allah made him enter Paradise." Hudhaifa further said, "I also heard him saying, 'Once
there was a man on his death-bed, who, losing every hope of surviving said to his family: When I die,
gather for me a large heap of wood and make a fire (to burn me). When the fire eats my meat and
reaches my bones, and when the bones burn, take and crush them into powder and wait for a windy
day to throw it (i.e. the powder) over the sea. They did so, but Allah collected his particles and asked
him:
Why did you do so? He replied: For fear of You. So Allah forgave him." `Uqba bin `Amr said, "I
heard him saying that the Israeli used to dig the grave of the dead (to steal their shrouds).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 60, Hadith 120
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out, and on seeing a high-domed building, he said: What is it?
His companions replied to him: It belongs to so and so, one of the Ansar.
He said: he said nothing but kept the matter in mind. When its owner came and gave him a greeting among the people, he turned away from him. When he had done this several times, the man realised that he was the cause of the anger and the rebuff.
So he complained about it to his companions, saying: I swear by Allah that I cannot understand the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
They said: He went out and saw your domed building. So the man returned to it and demolished it, levelling it to the ground. One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out and did not see it.
He asked: What has happened to the domed building?
They replied: Its owner complained to us about your rebuff, and when we informed him about it, he demolished it.
He said: Every building is a misfortune for its owner, except what cannot, except what cannot, meaning except that which is essential.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 43, Hadith 465
Yahya related to me from Malik from Sumayy, the mawla of Abu Bakr
ibn Abd ar-Rahman, from Abu Salih as-Sammani from Abu Hurayra that the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "If
someone does ghusl for major ritual impurity on the day of jumua and
then goes in the first part of the time, it is as if he had offered up
a camel. If he goes in the second part of the time, it is as if he had
offered up a cow. If he goes in the third part of the time, it is as
if he had offered up a horned ram. If he goes in the fourth part of
the time, it is as if he had offered up a hen. If he goes in the fifth
part of the time, it is as if he had offered up an egg. And when the
imam comes out, the angels settle down listening to the dhikr
(remembrance of Allah)."
Muwatta Malik Book 5, Hadith 1
O people of Ansar, did I not find you erring and Allah guided you aright through me, and (in the state of) being destitute and Allah made you free from want through me, and in a state of disunity and Allah united you through me, and they (the Ansar) said: Allah and His Messenger are most benevolent. He (again) said: Why do you not answer me? They said: Allah and His Messenger are the most benevolent. He said, If you wish you should say so and so, and the event (should take) such and such course (and in this connection he made a mention) of so many things. 'Amr is under the impression that he has not been able to remember them. He (the Holy Prophet) further said: Don't you feel happy (over this state of affairs) that the people should go away with goats and camels, and you go to your places along with the Messenger of Allah? The Ansar are inner garments (more close to me) and (other) people are outer garments. Had there not been migration, I would have been a man from among the Ansar. If the people were to tread a valley or a narrow path, I would tread the valley (chosen) by the Ansar or narrow path (trodden) by them. And you would soon find after me preferences (over you in getting material benefits). So you should show patience till you meet me at the Haud (Kauthar).
Sahih Muslim Book 12, Hadith 183
I left for Mecca for Hajj-at-Tamattu` assuming Ihram for `Umra. I reached Mecca three days before
the day of Tarwiya (8th Dhul-Hijja). Some people of Mecca said to me, "Your Hajj will be like the
Hajj performed by the people of Mecca (i.e. you will lose the superiority of assuming Ihram from the
Miqat). So I went to `Ata' asking him his view about it. He said, "Jabir bin `Abdullah narrated to me, 'I
performed Hajj with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on the day when he drove camels with him. The people had
assumed Ihram for Hajj-al-Ifrad. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered them to finish their Ihram after Tawaf round the
Ka`ba, and between Safa and Marwa and to cut short their hair and then to stay there (in Mecca) as
non-Muhrims till the day of Tarwiya (i.e. 8th of Dhul-Hijja) when they would assume Ihram for Hajj
and they were ordered to make the Ihram with which they had come as for `Umra only. They asked,
'How can we make it `Umra (Tamattu`) as we have intended to perform Hajj?' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Do
what I have ordered you. Had I not brought the Hadi with me, I would have done the same, but I
cannot finish my Ihram till the Hadi reaches its destination (i.e. is slaughtered).' So, they did (what he
ordered them to do)."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 25, Hadith 54
Eleven women sat (at a place) and promised and contracted that they would not conceal anything of
the news of their husbands.
The first one said, "My husband is like the meat of a slim weak camel which is kept on the top of a
mountain which is neither easy to climb, nor is the meat fat, so that one might put up with the trouble
of fetching it."
The second one said, "I shall not relate my husband's news, for I fear that I may not be able to finish
his story, for if I describe him, I will mention all his defects and bad traits."
The third one said, "My husband, the "too-tall"! if I describe him (and he hears of that) he will
divorce me, and if I keep quiet, he will keep me hanging (neither divorcing me nor treating me as a
wife)."
The fourth one said, "My husband is (moderate in temper) like the night of Tihama: neither hot nor
cold; I am neither afraid of him, nor am I discontented with him."
The fifth one said, "My husband, when entering (the house) is a leopard (sleeps a lot), and when going
out, is a lion (boasts a lot).
He does not ask about whatever is in the house."
The sixth one said, "If my husband eats, he eats too much (leaving the dishes empty), and if he drinks
he leaves nothing; if he sleeps he sleeps he rolls himself (alone in our blankets); and he does not insert
his palm to inquire about my feelings."
The seventh one said, "My husband is a wrong-doer or weak and foolish. All the defects are present in
him. He may injure your head or your body or may do both."
The eighth one said, "My husband is soft to touch like a rabbit and smells like a Zarnab (a kind of
good smelling grass)."
The ninth one said, "My husband is a tall generous man wearing a long strap for carrying his sword.
His ashes are abundant (i.e. generous to his guests) and his house is near to the people (who would
easily consult him)."
The tenth one said, "My husband is Malik (possessor), and what is Malik? Malik is greater than
whatever I say about him. (He is beyond and above all praises which can come to my mind). Most of
his camels are kept at home (ready to be slaughtered for the guests) and only a few are taken to the
pastures. When the camels hear the sound of the lute (or the tambourine) they realize that they are
going to be slaughtered for the guests."
The eleventh one said, "My husband is Abu Zar` and what is Abu Zar` (i.e., what should I say about
him)? He has given me many ornaments and my ears are heavily loaded with them and my arms have
become fat (i.e., I have become fat). And he has pleased me, and I have become so happy that I feel
proud of myself. He found me with my family who were mere owners of sheep and living in poverty,
and brought me to a respected family having horses and camels and threshing and purifying grain.
Whatever I say, he does not rebuke or insult me. When I sleep, I sleep till late in the morning, and
when I drink water (or milk), I drink my fill. The mother of Abu Zar and what may one say in praise
of the mother of Abu Zar? Her saddle bags were always full of provision and her house was spacious.
As for the son of Abu Zar, what may one say of the son of Abu Zar? His bed is as narrow as an
unsheathed sword and an arm of a kid (of four months) satisfies his hunger. As for the daughter of
Abu Zar, she is obedient to her father and to her mother. She has a fat well-built body and that arouses
the jealousy of her husband's other wife. As for the (maid) slave girl of Abu Zar, what may one say of
the (maid) slavegirl of Abu Zar? She does not uncover our secrets but keeps them, and does not waste
our provisions and does not leave the rubbish scattered everywhere in our house."
The eleventh lady added, "One day it so happened that Abu Zar went out at the time when the milk
was being milked from the animals, and he saw a woman who had two sons like two leopards playing
with her two breasts. (On seeing her) he divorced me and married her. Thereafter I married a noble
man who used to ride a fast tireless horse and keep a spear in his hand. He gave me many things, and
also a pair of every kind of livestock and said, Eat (of this), O Um Zar, and give provision to your
relatives."
She added, "Yet, all those things which my second husband gave me could not fill the smallest utensil
of Abu Zar's."
`Aisha then said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, "I am to you as Abu Zar was to his wife Um Zar."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 123
"As-subai bin Mabad said: 'I was a Christian
Bedouin, then I became Muslim. I was keen to go for Jihad but I learned that Hajj and "Umrah had been enjoined on me, I went to a man of my clan who was called Huraim bin 'Abdullah and asked him, and he said: "Put them together, then slaughter whatever you can of the Hadi, so I entered Ihram for bother together, and when I came to al-'Udhaib, I was met by Salman bin Rabiah and Zaid bin Suhan, while I was uttering the Talbiyah for bothe. One of them said to the other: "He does not understand more than his camel!: I came to 'Umar and said: "O Commander of the Believers! I have become Muslim and I am keen to go for Jihad, but I learned that Hajj and "Umrah were enjoined on me, so I went to Huraim bin 'Abdullah and said: "Hey you! I have learned that Hajj, and 'Umrah have been enjoined on me. He said: 'Put them together then slaughter whatever you can of the Jade' so I entered Ihram for both together, and when I came to Al-Udhaib I was met by Salman bin Rabiah and Zaid bin Suhan, and one of them said to the other: 'He does not understand more than his camel,''' 'Umar said: "You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 24, Hadith 101
"A man from the Ansar came when the Iqamah for prayer had
been said. He entered the Masjid and prayed behind Muadh, and he(Muadh) made the prayer lengthy. The man went away and prayed in a comer of the Masjid, then he left. When Muadh finished praying, it was said to him that so-and-so had done such and such. Muadh said:
'Tomorrow I will mention that to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).' So Muadh came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and told him about that. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent for him and asked him: 'What made you do what you did? He said: '0 Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I had been working with my camel to bring water all day, and when I came the Iqamah for prayer had already been said, so I entered the Masjid and joined him in the prayer, then he recited such and such a Surah and made it lengthy, so
I went away and prayed in a comer of the Masjid.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Do you want to cause hardship to the people, 0 Muadh do you want to cause hardship to the
people, 0 Muadh do you want to cause hardship to the people, 0 Muadh?"'
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 10, Hadith 55
“The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ)
gathered together and not one of them lagged behind. Fatimah came,
and
her gait was like that of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said,
‘Welcome to my daughter.’ Then he made her sit to his left, and
he
whispered something to her, and she smiled. I said to her: ‘What
made
you weep?’ She said: ‘I will not disclose the secret of the
Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ).’ I said: ‘I never saw joy so close to
grief as I saw
today.’ When she wept I said: ‘Did the Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ) tell
you some special words that were not for us, then
you wept?’ And I
asked her about what he had said. She said: ‘I
will not disclose the
secret of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’
After he died I asked her
what he had said, and she said: ‘He told
me that Jibra’il used to
review the Qur’an with him once each
year, but he had reviewed it with
him twice that year, (and he said:)
“I do not think but that my time
is near. You will be the first of
my family to join me, and what a
good predecessor I am for you.” So
I wept. Then he whispered to me and
said: “Will you not be pleased
to be the leader of the women of this
Ummah?” So I smiled.’”
