Usama bin Zaid said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) rode over a donkey with a saddle underneath which there was a
thick soft Fadakiya velvet sheet. Usama bin Zaid was his companion rider, and he was going to pay a
visit to Sa`d bin Ubada (who was sick) at the dwelling place of Bani Al-Harith bin Al-Khazraj, and
this incident happened before the battle of Badr. The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a gathering in which there
were Muslims and pagan idolators and Jews, and among them there was `Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul,
and there was `Abdullah bin Rawaha too. When a cloud of dust raised by the animal covered that
gathering, `Abdullah bin Ubai covered his nose with his Rida (sheet) and said (to the Prophet), "Don't
cover us with dust." The Prophet (ﷺ) greeted them and then stopped, dismounted and invited them to
Allah (i.e., to embrace Islam) and also recited to them the Holy Qur'an. `Abdullah bin Ubai' bin Salul
said, "O man! There is nothing better than what you say, if what you say is the truth. So do not trouble
us in our gatherings. Go back to your mount (or house,) and if anyone of us comes to you, tell (your
tales) to him." On that `Abdullah bin Rawaha said, "(O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!) Come to us and bring it(what
you want to say) in our gatherings, for we love that." So the Muslims, the pagans and the Jews started
quarreling till they were about to fight and clash with one another. The Prophet (ﷺ) kept on quietening
them (till they all became quiet). He then rode his animal, and proceeded till he entered upon Sa`d bin
'Ubada, he said, "O Sa`d, didn't you hear what Abu Habbab said? (He meant `Abdullah bin Ubai). He
said so-and-so." Sa`d bin 'Ubada said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Excuse and forgive him, for by Allah,
Allah has given you what He has given you. The people of this town decided to crown him (as their
chief) and make him their king. But when Allah prevented that with the Truth which He had given
you, it choked him, and that was what made him behave in the way you saw him behaving." So the
Prophet excused him.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 79, Hadith 28
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Said ibn al-
Musayyab that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, forbade muzabana and muhaqala. Muzabana was selling fresh
dates for dried dates. Muhaqala was buying unharvested wheat in
exchange for threshed wheat and renting land in exchange for wheat.
Ibn Shihab added that he had asked Said ibn al-Musayyab about
renting land for gold and silver. He said, "There is no harm in it."
Malik said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, forbade muzabana. The explanation of muzabana is that
it is buying something whose number, weight and measure is not known
with something whose number, weight or measure is known, for instance,
if a man has a stack of food whose measure is not known, either of
wheat, dates, or whatever food, or the man has goods of wheat, date
kernels, herbs, safflower, cotton, flax, silk, and does not know its
measure or weight or number and then a buyer approaches him and
proposes that he weigh or measure or count the goods, but, before he
does, he specifies a certain weight, or measure, or number and
guarantees to pay the price for that amount, agreeing that whatever
falls short of that amount is a loss against him and whatever is in
excess of that amount is a gain for him. That is not a sale. It is
taking risks and it is an uncertain transaction. It falls into the
category of gambling because he is not buying something from him for
something definite which he pays. Everything which resembles this is
also forbidden."
Malik said that another example of that was,
for instance, a man proposing to another man, "You have cloth. I will
guarantee you from this cloth of yours so many hooded cloaks, the
measureof each cloak to be such-and-such, (naming a measurement).
Whatever loss there is, is against me and I will fulfill you the
specified amount and whatever excess there is, is mine." Or perhaps
the man proposed, "I will guarantee you from this cloth of yours so
many shirts, the measurement of each shirt to be such-and-such, and
whatever loss there is, is against me and I will fulfill the specified
amount and whatever excess there is, is mine." Or perhaps a man
proposed to a man who had cattle or camel hides, "I will cut up these
hides of yours into sandals on a pattern I will show you. Whatever
falls short of a hundred pairs, I will make up its loss and whatever
is over is mine because I guaranteed you." Another example was that a
man say to a man who had ben-nuts, "I will press these nuts of yours.
Whatever falls short of such-and-such a weight by the pound, I will
make it up, and whatever is more than that is mine."
Malik
said that all this and whatever else was like it or resembled it was
in the category of muzabana, which was neither good nor permitted. It
was also the same case for a man to say to a man, who had fodder
leaves, date kernels, cotton, flax, herbs or safflower, "I will buy
these leaves from you in exchange for such-and-such a sa, (indicating
leaves which are pounded like his leaves) . . or these date kernels
for such-and-such a sa of kernels like them, and the like of that in
the case of safflower, cotton, flax and herbs."
Malik said,
"All this is what we have described of muzabana."
Muwatta Malik Book 31, Hadith 25
One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) appeared before the public so a man came to him and then said: Prophet of Allah, what is Iman? Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His meeting, His Messengers and that you affirm your faith in the Resurrection hereafter. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Islam? He replied: Al-Islam is that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him and you establish obligatory prayer and you pay the obligatory alms (Zakat) and you observe the fast of Ramadan. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Ihsan? He replied: That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and for if you fail to see Him. He said: Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour (of Doom)? He replied: The one who is asked about it is no better informed than the inquirer, however I will narrate some of its signs to you. When the slave-girl will give birth to her master, then that is from its signs. When the naked, barefooted would become the chiefs of the people, then that is from its signs. When the shepherds of the black (camels) would exult themselves in buildings, then that is from its signs. (The Hour is) Among one of the five which no one knows but Allah. Then he recited (the verse): "Verily Allah! with Him alone is the knowledge of the Hour and He it is Who sends down the rain and knows that which is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it shall earn tomorrow, and a soul knows not in what land it shall die. Verily Allah is Knowing, Aware."
He (Abu Huraira) said: Then the person turned back and went away. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Bring that man back to me. They went to bring him back, but they saw nothing there. Upon this the Messenger of Allah remarked: he was Gabriel, who came to teach the people their religion.
Sahih Muslim Book 1, Hadith 5
We were forbidden that we should ask anything (without the genuine need) from the Holy Prophet. It, therefore, pleased us that an intelligent person from the dwellers of the desert should come and asked him (the Holy Prophet) and we should listen to it. A man from the dwellers of the desert came (to the Holy Prophet) and said: Muhammad, your messenger came to us and told us your assertion that verily Allah had sent you (as a prophet). He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He told the truth. He (the bedouin) said: Who created the heaven? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Allah. He (the bedouin again) said: Who created the earth? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Allah. He (the bedouin again) said: Who raised these mountains and who created in them whatever is created there? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Allah. Upon this he (the bedouin) remarked: By Him Who created the heaven and created the earth and raised mountains thereupon, has Allah (in fact) sent you? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. He (the bedouin) said: Your messenger also told us that five prayers (had been made) obligatory for us during the day and the night. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He told you the truth. He (the bedouin) said: By Him Who sent you, is it Allah Who ordered you about this (i. e. prayers)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. He (the bedouin) said: Your messenger told us that Zakat had been made obligatory in our riches. He (the Holy Prophet) said. He has told the truth. He (the bedouin) said: By Him Who sent you (as a prophet), is it Allah Who ordered you about it (Zakat)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. He (the bedouin) said: Your messenger told us that it had been made obligatory for us to fast every year during the month of Ramadan. He (the Holy Prophet) said: He has told the truth. He (the bedouin) said: By Him Who sent you (as a prophet), is it Allah Who ordered you about it (the fasts of Ramadan)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. He (the bedouin) said: Your messenger also told us that pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House (of Ka'bah) had been made obligatory for him who is able to undertake the journey to it. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. The narrator said that he (the bedouin) set off (at the conclusion of this answer, but at the time of his departure) remarked: 'By Him Who sent you with the Truth, I would neither make any addition to them nor would I diminish anything out of them. Upon this the Prophet remarked: If he were true (to what he said) he must enter Paradise.
Sahih Muslim Book 1, Hadith 10
Malik related to me from Zayd ibn Aslam that a man confessed to
fornication in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, called for a whip, and he was brought a broken whip.
He said, "Above this," and he was brought a new whip whose knots had
not been cut yet. He said, "Below this," and he was brought a whip
which had been used and made flexible. The Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave the order and he was
flogged. Then he said, "People! The time has come for you to observe
the limits of Allah. Whoever has had any of these ugly things befall
him should cover them up with the veil of Allah. Whoever reveals to us
his wrong action, we perform what is in the Book of Allah against
him."
Muwatta Malik Book 41, Hadith 12
"I heard the Messenger of Allah (saas) say: 'Allahumma! Inni asa'luka bismikat-tahirit-tayyibil-mubarak al-ahabbi ilaika, alladhi idha du'ita bihi ajabta, wa idha su'ilta bihi a'taita, wa idhasturhimta bihi rahimta, wa idhastufrijta bihi farrajta (O Allah! I ask You by Your pure, good and blessed Name which is most beloved by You, which if You are called thereby You answer, and if You as asked thereby You give, if You are asked for mercy thereby You bestow mercy, and if You are asked for relief (from distress) thereby You grant relief.'"She said: "He said one day: 'O 'Aishah, do you know that Allah has told me the Name which, if He is called thereby, He responds?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! Teach it to me.' He said: 'You should not learn it, O 'Aishah.' So I moved aside and sat for a while, then I got up and kissed his head, then I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach it to me.' He said: 'You should not learn it, O 'Aishah, and I should not teach it to you, for you should not ask for any worldly things thereby.'" She said: "So I got up and performed ablution, then I prayed two Rak'ah, then I said: 'O Allah, I call upon Allah, and I call upon You, Ar-Rahman (the Most Gracious), and I call upon You, Al-Barr Ar-Rahim (The Most Kind, the Most Merciful), and I call upon You by all Your beautiful Names, those that I know and those that I do not know, (asking) that You forgive me and have mercy on me.' The Messenger of Allah (saas) smiled, then he said: 'It is among the names by which you called upon (Allah).'"
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 34, Hadith 33
He heard Abu Musa say: "The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) addressed us and taught us our Sunnah and our prayer. He said: 'When you pray, make your rows straight and let one of you lead you in prayer. When the Imam says the takbir, then say the takbir. When he recites 'Not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor those who went astray' then say: "Amin" and Allah will answer you. When he says the takbir and bows, then say the takbir and bow. The Imam bows before you do and stands up before you do.' The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'This makes up for that. And when he says: "'Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him),' then say: "Allahumma Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (O Allah, our Lord, and to You be the praise), " Allah will hear you, for Allah has said on the lips of His Prophet (ﷺ): "Allah hears the one who praises Him." And when he (the Imam) says the takbir and prostrates, then say the takbir and prostrate. The Imam prostrates before you do and sits up before you do.' The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'This makes up for that. And when he is sitting, let the first thing that any one of you says be: At-tahiyaatut-tayyibatus-salawatuLillah, salamun 'alayka ayyuhanabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, salamun 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh (All compliments, good words and prayers are due to Allah, peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)- seven phrases which are the greeting of the prayer.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 12, Hadith 36
0 Allah, enable me to derive benefit from my husband, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and from my father Abu Sufyan, and from my brother Mu'awiya. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to her: Verily, you have asked Allah about the durations of life already set, and the steps which you would take, and the sustenances the share of which is fixed. Nothing would take place earlier than its due time, and nothing would be deferred beyond that when it is due. So, if you were to ask Allah about your safety from the torment of Hell-Fire and from the torment of the grave, it would have been better for you. A person said: Allah's Messenger, what about those apes and swine which suffered metamorphosis? Thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, did not destroy a people or did not torment a people, and let their race grow. Apes and swine had been even before that (when the deniers of truth were tormented and suffered metamorphosis). This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sufyin through another chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.
Sahih Muslim Book 46, Hadith 51
"I was brought an animal that was larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, whose stride could reach as far as it could see. I mounted it, and Jibril was with me, and I set off. Then he said: 'Dismount and pray,' so I did that. He said: 'Do you know where you have prayed? You have prayed in Taibah, which will be the place of the emigration.' Then he said: 'Dismount and pray,' so I prayed. He said: 'Do you know where you have prayed? You have prayed in Mount Sinai, where Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, spoke to Musa, peace be upon him.' So I dismounted and prayed, and he said: 'Do you know where you have prayed? You have prayed in Bethlehem, where 'Eisa, peace be upon him, was born.' Then I entered Bait Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) where the Prophets, peace be upon them, were assembled for me, and Jibril brought me forward to lead them in prayer. Then I was taken up to the first heaven, where I saw Adam, peace be upon him. Then I was taken up to the second heaven where I saw the maternal cousins 'Eisa and Yahya, peace be upon them. Then I was taken up to the third heaven where I saw Yusuf, peace be upon him. Then I was taken up to the fourth heaven where I saw Harun, peace be upon him. Then I was taken up to the fifth heaven where I saw Idris, peace be upon him. Then I was taken up to the sixth heaven where I saw Musa, peace be upon him. Then I was taken up to the seventh heaven where I saw Ibrahim, peace be upon him. Then I was taken up above seven heavens and we came to Sidrah Al-Muntaha and I was covered with fog. I fell down prostrate and it was said to me: '(Indeed) The day I created the heavens and the Earth, I enjoined upon you and your Ummah fifty prayers, so establish them, you and your Ummah.' I came back to Ibrahim and he did not ask me about anything, then I came to Musa and he said: 'How much did your Lord enjoin upon you and your Ummah?' I said: 'Fifty prayers.' He said: 'You will not be able to establish them, neither you nor your Ummah. Go back to your Lord and ask Him to reduce it.' So I went back to my Lord and He reduced it by ten. Then I came to Musa and he told me to go back, so I went back and He reduced it by ten. Then I came to Musa and he told me to go back, so I went back and He reduced it by ten. Then it was reduced it by ten. Then it was reduced to five prayers. He (Musa) said: 'Go back to you Lord and ask Him to reduce it, for two prayers were enjoined upon the Children of Israel but they did not establish them.' So I went back to my Lord and asked Him to reduce it, but He said: 'The day I created the heavens and the Earth, I enjoined fifty prayers upon you and your Ummah. Five is for fifty, so establish them, you and your Ummah.' I knew that this was what Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, had determined so I went back to Musa, peace be upon him, and he said: 'Go back.' But I knew that it was what Allah had determined, so I did not go back."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 5, Hadith 3
that he was a boy of ten at the time when the Prophet (ﷺ) emigrated to Medina. He added: I served Allah's
Apostle for ten years (the last part of his life time) and I know more than the people about the
occasion whereupon the order of Al-Hijab was revealed (to the Prophet). Ubai b n Ka`b used to ask
me about it. It was revealed (for the first time) during the marriage of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) with Zainab bint
Jahsh. In the morning, the Prophet (ﷺ) was a bride-groom of her and he Invited the people, who took their
meals and went away, but a group of them remained with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and they prolonged their
stay. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up and went out, and I too, went out along with him till he came to the lintel
of `Aisha's dwelling place. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) thought that those people had left by then, so he returned,
and I too, returned with him till he entered upon Zainab and found that they were still sitting there and
had not yet gone. The Prophet (ﷺ) went out again, and so did I with him till he reached the lintel of
`Aisha's dwelling place, and then he thought that those people must have left by then, so he returned,
and so did I with him, and found those people had gone. At that time the Divine Verse of Al-Hijab
was revealed, and the Prophet (ﷺ) set a screen between me and him (his family).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 79, Hadith 12
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ata ibn Yazid
al-Laythi that Ubaydullah ibn Adi ibnal-Khiyar said, "Once when the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was
sitting with some people, a man came to him and spoke secretly to him.
Nobody knew what he had said until the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, disclosed that he had asked for
permission to kill one of the hypocrites. When he disclosed this, the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
'Doesn't he testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad
is the Messenger of Allah?' The man replied, 'Of course, but he
hasn't really done so.' He said, 'Doesn't he do the prayer?' and the
man replied, 'Of course, but he doesn't really do the prayer.' He
said, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, 'Those are the ones
whom Allah has forbidden me (to kill).' "
Muwatta Malik Book 9, Hadith 92
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ibrahim
ibn Abdullah ibn Hunayn from his father Abdullah ibn Hunayn that
Abdullah ibn Abbas and al-Miswar ibn Makhrama once had a disagreement
at al-Abwa. Abdullah said that some one in ihram could wash his head,
and al Miswar ibn Makhrama maintained that some one in ihram could not
wash his head.
Abdullah ibn Hunayn continued, "Abdullah ibn
Abbas sent me to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and I found him doing ghusl
between the posts of a well, screened by a garment. I greeted him and
hesaid, 'Who is that?' I replied, 'I am 'Abdullah ibn Hunayn.
'Abdullah ibn Abbas sent me to you to ask how the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to wash his head when he
was in ihram.' "
He continued, "Abu Ayyub put his hand on the
garment and pulled it down until I could see his head. He said to the
man who was pouring out the water for him, 'Pour,' and he poured some
over his head. Then he passed his hands over his head from the front
to the back and then to the front again, and then said, 'I saw the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, doing it
like this.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 4
"When he was in Yemen, Ali sent a piece of gold that was still mixed with sediment to the Messenger of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah distributed it among four people: Al-Aqra' bin Habis Al-Hanzali, 'Uyaynah bin Badr Al-Fazari, 'Alqamah bin 'Ulathah Al- 'Amiri, who was from Banu Kilab and Zaid Al-Ta'I who was from Banu Nabhan. The Quraish" - he said one time: became angry and said: 'You give to the chiefs of Najdand that, so as to soften their hearts toward Islam.' Then a man with a thick beard, prominent cheeks, and a shaven head came and said: 'Fear Allah. O Muhammad! He said: 'Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? (Is it fair that) He has entrusted me with all the people of the Earth but you do not trust me?' Then the man went away, and a man from among the people, whom they (the narrators) think was Khalid bin Al-Walid, asked for permission to kill him. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Among the offspring of this man will be some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not go any further than their throats. They will kill the Muslims but leave the idol worshippers alone, and they will passes through Islam as an arrow passes through the body of the target. If I live to see them. I will kill them all, as the people of 'Ad were killed."'
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 23, Hadith 144
While Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting in the mosque with some people, three men came. Two of them
came in front of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and the third one went away. The two persons kept on standing
before Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) for a while and then one of them found a place in the circle and sat there while
the other sat behind the gathering, and the third one went away. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) finished his
preaching, he said, "Shall I tell you about these three persons? One of them betook himself to Allah,
so Allah took him into His grace and mercy and accommodated him, the second felt shy from Allah,
so Allah sheltered Him in His mercy (and did not punish him), while the third turned his face from
Allah and went away, so Allah turned His face from him likewise. "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 3, Hadith 8
While Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting, a Jew came and said, "O Abul Qasim! One of your companions has
slapped me on my face." The Prophet (ﷺ) asked who that was. He replied that he was one of the Ansar.
The Prophet (ﷺ) sent for him, and on his arrival, he asked him whether he had beaten the Jew. He (replied
in the affirmative and) said, "I heard him taking an oath in the market saying, 'By Him Who gave
Moses superiority over all the human beings.' I said, 'O wicked man! (Has Allah given Moses
superiority) even over Muhammad I became furious and slapped him over his face." The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Do not give a prophet superiority over another, for on the Day of Resurrection all the people will fall
unconscious and I will be the first to emerge from the earth, and will see Moses standing and holding
one of the legs of the Throne. I will not know whether Moses has fallen unconscious or the first
unconsciousness was sufficient for him."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 44, Hadith 3
“The Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ) fainted when he was sick, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the
time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal
to call
the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’
Then he
fainted, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer
come?’
They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the
Adhan, and tell Abu
Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ Then he
fainted, then he woke up
and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’
They said: ‘Yes.’ He said:
‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and
tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in
prayer.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘My
father is a tender-hearted man, and if he
stands in that place he
will weep and will not be able to do it. If
you told someone else to
do it (that would be better).’ Then he
fainted, then woke up and
said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and
tell Abu Bakr to lead the
people in prayer. You are (like) the female
companions of Yusuf.’
So Bilal was told to call the Adhan and he did
so, and Abu Bakr was
told to lead the people in prayer, and he did so.
Then the Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ) felt a little better, and he said:
‘Find me someone
I can lean on.’ Barirah and another man came, and he
leaned on
them. When Abu Bakr saw him, he started to step back, but
(the
Prophet (ﷺ)) gestured him to stay where he was. Then the
Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ) came and sat beside Abu Bakr, until Abu Bakr
finished
praying. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away.”
