Yahya related to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman
from Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, said, "If a misfortune befalls some one and he says, as
Allah has ordered, 'We belong to Allah and to Him we are returning. O
Allah, reward me in my misfortune and give me better than it
afterwards,' Allah will do that for him" (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi
rajiun. Allahumma' jurniy fi musiybatiy, wa a qibhiy khayran minha,
illa faala 'llahu dhalika bihi.).
Umm Salama said, "When Abu
Salama died I said that, and then I said, 'Who is better than Abu
Salama?' " And then Allah left her the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, and he married her.
Muwatta Malik Book 16, Hadith 43
Ibn `Abbas said, "When the ailment of the Prophet (ﷺ) became worse, he said, 'Bring for me (writing)
paper and I will write for you a statement after which you will not go astray.' But `Umar said, 'The
Prophet is seriously ill, and we have got Allah's Book with us and that is sufficient for us.' But the
companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) differed about this and there was a hue and cry. On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to
them, 'Go away (and leave me alone). It is not right that you should quarrel in front of me." Ibn
`Abbas came out saying, "It was most unfortunate (a great disaster) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was prevented
from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise. (Note: It is apparent
from this Hadith that Ibn `Abbas had witnessed the event and came out saying this statement. The
truth is not so, for Ibn `Abbas used to say this statement on narrating the Hadith and he had not
witnessed the event personally. See Fath Al-Bari Vol. 1, p.220 footnote.) (See Hadith No. 228, Vol.
4).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 3, Hadith 56
While Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting, a Jew came and said, "O Abul Qasim! One of your companions has
slapped me on my face." The Prophet (ﷺ) asked who that was. He replied that he was one of the Ansar.
The Prophet (ﷺ) sent for him, and on his arrival, he asked him whether he had beaten the Jew. He (replied
in the affirmative and) said, "I heard him taking an oath in the market saying, 'By Him Who gave
Moses superiority over all the human beings.' I said, 'O wicked man! (Has Allah given Moses
superiority) even over Muhammad I became furious and slapped him over his face." The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Do not give a prophet superiority over another, for on the Day of Resurrection all the people will fall
unconscious and I will be the first to emerge from the earth, and will see Moses standing and holding
one of the legs of the Throne. I will not know whether Moses has fallen unconscious or the first
unconsciousness was sufficient for him."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 44, Hadith 3
Either the owner of the
wares says to the borrower, 'Take these wares and sell them. Buy and
sell with the capital realized according to qirad.' The investor
stipulates increase for himself from the sale of his goods and what
relieves him of expenses in selling it. Or else he says, 'Barter with
these goods and sell. When you are through, buy for me the like of my
goods which I gave you. If there is increase, it is between you and
me. 'It may happen that the investor gives the goods to the agent at a
time in which they are in demand and expensive, and then the agent
returns them while they are cheap and he might have bought them for
only a third of the original price or even less than that. The agent
then has a profit of half the amount by which the price of the wares
has decreased as his portion of the profit. Or he might take the wares
at a time when their price is low, and make use of them until he has a
lot of money. Then those wares become expensive and their price rises
when he returns them, so he buys them for all that he has so that all
his work and concern have been in vain. This is an uncertain
transaction and is not good. If, however, that is not known until it
has happened, then the wage an agent in qirad would be paid for
selling that, is looked at and he is given it for his concern. Then
the money is qirad from the day the money became cash and collected as
coin and it is returned as a qirad like that."
Muwatta Malik Book 32, Hadith 7
The House was burnt during the time of Yazid b. Muawiya when the people of Syria had fought (in Mecca). And it happened with it (the Ka'ba) what was (in store for it). Ibn Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) felt it (in the same state) until the people came in the season (of Hajj). (The idea behind was) that he wanted to exhort them or incite them (to war) against the people of Syria. When the people had arrived he said to them: O people, advise me about the Ka'ba. Should I demolish it and then build it from its very foundation, or should I repair whatever has been damaged of it? Ibn 'Abbas said: An idea has occurred to me according to which I think that you should only repair (the portion which has been) damaged, and leave the House (in that very state in which) people embraced Islam (and leave those very stones in the same state) when people embraced Islam, and over which Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) had raised it. Thereupon Ibn Zubair said: It the house of any one of you is burnt, he would not be contented until he had reconstructed it, then what about the House of your Lord (which is far more Important than your house)? I would seek good advice from my Lord thrice and then I would make up (my mind) about this affair. After seeking good advice thrice, he made up his mind to demolish it. The people apprehended that calamity might fall from heaven on those persons who would be first to climb (over the building for the purpose of demolishing it), till one (took up courage, and ascended the roof), and threw down one of its stones. When the people saw no calamity befalling him, they followed him, demolished it until it was razed to the ground. Then Ibn Zubair erected pillars and hung cartains on them (in order to provide facilities to the people for observing the time of its construction). And the walls were raised; and Ibn Zubair said: I heard 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) say that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) had observed: If the people had Rot recently (abandoned) unbelief, find I had means enough to reconstruct it, which I had not, I would have definitely excompassed in it five cubits of area from Hijr. And I would also have constructed a door for the people to enter, and a door for their exit. I today have (the means to spend) and I entertain no fearfrom the side of people (that they would protest against this change). So he added five cubits of area from the side of Hatim to it that there appeared (the old) foundation (upon which Hadrat Ibrahim had built the Ka'ba). and the people saw that and it was upon this foundation that the wall was raised. The length of the Ka'ba was eighteen cubits. when addition was made to it (which was in its breadth), then naturally the length appears to be) small (as compared with its breadth). Then addition of ten cubits (of area) was made in its length (also). Two doors were also constructed, one of which (was meant) for entrance and the other one for exit. When Ibn Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) was killed, Hajjaj wrote to 'Abd al-Malik (b. Marwan) informing him about it, and telling him that Ibn Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) had built (the Ka'ba) on those very foundations (which were laid by Ibrahim) and which reliable persons among the Meccans had seen. 'Abd al-Malik wrote to him: We are not concerned with the censuring of Ibn Zubair in anything. Keep intact the addition made by him in the side of length, and whatever he has added frem the side of Hijr revert to (its previous) foundation, and wall up the door which he had opened. Thus Hajjaj at the command of Abd al-Malik) demolished it (that portion) and rebuilt it on (its previous) foundations.
Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 449
'Umar sent for me when the day rose high. I found him sitting on a couch without cover. When I entered upon him, he said: Malik, some people of you tribe gradually came here, and I have ordered to give them something, so distribute it among them. I said: If you assigned this (work) to some other person, (it would be better). He said: Take it. Then Yarfa' came to him and said: Commander of the Faithful, will you permit 'Uthman b. 'Affan, 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, al-Zubair b. al-'Awwam, and Sa'd b, Abi Waqqas (to enter) ? He said: Yes. So he permitted them and they entered. Yarfa' again came to him and said: Commander of the Faithful, would you permit al-'Abbas and 'Ali ? He said: Yes. He then permitted them and they entered. Al-'Abbas said: Commander of Faithful, decide between me and this, referring to 'Ali. Some of them said: Yes, Commander of the Faithful, decide between them and give them comfort. Malik b. Aws said: It occurred to me that both of them brought the other people for this. 'Umar said: Show patience (do not make haste). He then turned towards those people and said: I adjure you by Allah by Whose order the heaven and earth stand. Do you know that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We are not inherited whatever we leave is sadaqah (alms). They said: Yes. He then turned towards 'Ali and al-'Abbas and said: I adjure you by Allah by Whose order the heaven and earth stand. Do you know that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We are not inherited whatever we leave is sadaqah (alms). They said: Yes. He then said: Allah has appointed for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) a special portion (in the booty) which he did not do for anyone. Allah, Most High, said: What Allah has bestowed on His Apostle (and taken away) from them - for this ye made no expedition with either cavalry or camelry. But Allah gives power to His apostles over any He pleases ; and Allah has power over all things". Allah bestowed (the property of) Banu al-Nadir on His Apostle. I swear by Allah, he did not reserve it for himself, nor did he take it over and above you. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to his share for his maintenance annually, or used to take his contribution and give his family their annual contribution (from this property), then take what remained and deal with it as he did with Allah's property. He then turned towards those people and said: I adjure you by Allah by Whose order the heaven and earth stand. Do you know that ? They said: Yes. He then turned towards 'Ali and al-'Abbas and said: I adjure you by Allah by Whose order the heaven and earth stand. Do you know that ? They said: Yes. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died, Abu Bakr said: I am the protector of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Then you and this ('Ali) came to Abu Bakr, demanding a share from the inheritance of your cousin, and this ('Ali) demanding the share of his wife from (the property of her) father. Abu Bakr then said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We are not inherited. Whatever we leave is sadaqah. Allah knows that he (Abu Bakr) was true, faithful, rightly-guided, and the follower of Triuth. Abu Bakr then administered it (property of the Prophet). When Abu Bakr died, I said: I am the protector of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr. So I administered whatever Allah wished. Then you and this ('Ali) came. Both of you are at one, and your matter is the same. So they asked me for it (property), and I said: If you wish I give it to you on condition that you are bound by the covenant of Allah, meaning that you will administer it as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to administer. So you took it from me on that condition. Then again you have come to me so that I decide between you other than that. I swear by Allah, I shall not decide between you other than that till the Last Hour comes. If you helpless, return it to me.
Abu Dawud said: They asked him for making it half between them, and not that they were ignorant of the fact the Prophet (ﷺ) said: We are not inherited. Whatever we leave is sadaqah (alms). They were also seeking the truth. 'Umar then said: I do not apply the name of division to it ; It leave it on its former condition.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 20, Hadith 36
that Quraish became concerned about the case of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen, and they said: “Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) concerning her?” They said: “Who would dare to do that other than Usamah bin Zaid, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?” So Usamah spoke to him, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Are you interceding concerning one of the legal punishments of Allah (SWT)?“ Then he stood up and addressed (the people) and said: “O people! Those who came before you were only destroyed because when one of their nobles stole, they let him off, but when one of the weak people among them stole, they would carry out the punishment on him. By Allah, if Fatimah the daughter of Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.” (Sahih)(One of the narrators) Muhammad bin Rumh said: “I heard Laith bin Sa'd say: 'Allah(SWT) protected her (Fatimah) from stealing, and every Muslim should say this.'”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 20, Hadith 15
Messenger of Allah, has there come upon you a day more terrible than the day of Uhud. He said: I have experienced from thy people and the hardest treatment I met from them was what I received from them on the day of `Aqaba. I betook myself to Ibn `Abd Yalil b. `Abd Kulal with the purpose of inviting him to Islam, but he did not respond to me as I desired. So I departed with signs of (deep) distress on my face. I did not recover until I reached Qarn al-Tha`alib. Where I raised my head, lo! near me was a cloud which had cast its shadow on me. I looked and lo! there was in it the angel Jibril who called out to me and said: God, the Honoured and Glorious, has heard what thy people have said to thee, and how they have reacted to thy call. And He has sent to thee the angel in charge of the mountains so that thou mayest order him what thou wishest (him to do) with regard to them. The angel in charge of the mountains (then) called out to me, greeted me and said: Muhammad, God has listened to what thy people have said to thee. I am the angel in charge of the mountains, and thy Lord has sent me to thee so that thou mayest order me what thou wishest. If thou wishest that I should bring together the two mountains that stand opposite to each other at the extremities of Mecca to crush them in between, (I would do that). But the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said to him: I rather hope that God will produce from their descendants such persons as will worship Allah, the One, and will not ascribe partners to Him.
Sahih Muslim Book 32, Hadith 135
“I accompanied Shaddad bin Aws on a journey, so he said: ‘Should I not teach you what the Messenger of Allah used to teach us? That you say: “O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in the affair and I ask You for determination upon guidance, and I ask You to make me grateful for Your favor, and excellence in worshiping You, and I ask You for a truthful tongue and a sound heart, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which You know. Verily, You are the Knower of all that is hidden (Allāhumma innī as’alukath-thabāta fil-amri, wa as’aluka `azīmatar-rushdi, wa as’aluka shukra ni`matika, wa ḥusna `ibādatika, wa as’aluka lisānan ṣādiqan wa qalban salīman, wa a`ūdhu bika min sharri mā ta`lamu, wa as’aluka min khairi mā ta`lamu, wa astaghfiruka mimmā ta`lamu innaka anta `allāmul-ghuyūb).’” He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There is no Muslim who lays down to sleep while reciting a Surat from Allah’s Book, except that Allah entrusts an angel, so that nothing approaches him to harm him until he awakens, whenever he awakens.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 38
We were in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) in a Ghazwa. A large number of emigrants joined him and
among the emigrants there was a person who used to play jokes (or play with spears); so he (jokingly)
stroked an Ansari man on the hip. The Ans-ari got so angry that both of them called their people. The
Ansari said, "Help, O Ansar!" And the emigrant said "Help, O emigrants!" The Prophet (ﷺ) came out and
said, "What is wrong with the people (as they are calling) this call of the period of Ignorance? "Then
he said, "What is the matter with them?" So he was told about the stroke of the emigrant to the Ansari.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Stop this (i.e. appeal for help) for it is an evil call. "Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul (a
hypocrite) said, "The emigrants have called and (gathered against us); so when we return to Medina,
surely, the more honorable people will expel therefrom the meaner," Upon that `Umar said, "O Allah's
Prophet! Shall we not kill this evil person (i.e. `Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul) ?" The Prophet) said,
"(No), lest the people should say that Muhammad used to kill his companions."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 61, Hadith 28
The wives of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) were in two groups. One group consisted of `Aisha, Hafsa, Safiyya and
Sauda; and the other group consisted of Um Salama and the other wives of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). The
Muslims knew that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) loved `Aisha, so if any of them had a gift and wished to give to
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), he would delay it, till Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had come to `Aisha's home and then he would
send his gift to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in her home. The group of Um Salama discussed the matter together
and decided that Um Salama should request Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to tell the people to send their gifts to him
in whatever wife's house he was. Um Salama told Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) of what they had said, but he did not
reply.
Then they (those wives) asked Um Salama about it. She said, "He did not say anything to me." They
asked her to talk to him again. She talked to him again when she met him on her day, but he gave no
reply. When they asked her, she replied that he had given no reply. They said to her, "Talk to him till
he gives you a reply." When it was her turn, she talked to him again. He then said to her, "Do not hurt
me regarding Aisha, as the Divine Inspirations do not come to me on any of the beds except that of
Aisha." On that Um Salama said, "I repent to Allah for hurting you." Then the group of Um Salama
called Fatima, the daughter of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and sent her to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to say to him, "Your
wives request to treat them and the daughter of Abu Bakr on equal terms."
Then Fatima conveyed the message to him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O my daughter! Don't you love whom
I love?" She replied in the affirmative and returned and told them of the situation. They requested her
to go to him again but she refused. They then sent Zainab bint Jahsh who went to him and used harsh
words saying, "Your wives request you to treat them and the daughter of Ibn Abu Quhafa on equal
terms." On that she raised her voice and abused `Aisha to her face so much so that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
looked at `Aisha to see whether she would retort. `Aisha started replying to Zainab till she silenced
her. The Prophet (ﷺ) then looked at `Aisha and said, "She is really the daughter of Abu Bakr."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 51, Hadith 16
I have a large family (to support) and we are enduring hardships; I have, therefore, made up my mind to take my family to some fertile land. Thereupon Abu Sa'id said: Don't do that, stick to Medina, for we have come out with Allah's Apostle (ﷺ), and (I think that he also said) until we reached 'Usfan, and he (the Prophet along with his Companions) stayed there for some nights. There the people said: By Allah, we are lying here idle, whereas our children are unprotected behind us, and we do not feel secure about them. This (apprehension of theirs) reached Allah's Apostle (ﷺ), whereupon he said: What is this matter concerning you that has reached me? (I do not retain how he said it, whether he said like this: ) By Him (in the name of Whom) I take oath, (or he said like this: ) By Him in Whose Hand is my life, I made up my mind or if you like (I do not retain what word did he actually say), I should command my camel to proceed and not to let it halt until it comes to Medina and then said: Ibrahim declared Mecca as the sacred territory and it became sacred, and I declare Medina as the sacred territory-the area between the two mountains ('Air and Uhud). Thus no blood is to be shed within its (bounds) and no weapon is to be carried for fighting, and the leaves of the trees there should not be beaten off except for fodder. O Allah, bless us in our city; O Allah, bless us in our sil; O Allah, bless us in our mudd; O Allah, bless us in our sa; O Allah, bless us in our mudd. O Allah, bless us in our city. O Allah, bless with this blessing two more blessings. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, there is no ravine or mountain path of Medina which is not protected by two angels until you reach there. (He then said to the people: ) Proceed, and we, therefore, proceeded and we came to Medina By Him (in Whose name) we take oath and (in Whose name) oath is taken (Hammad is in doubt about it), we had hardly put down our camel saddles on arriving at Medina that we were attacked by the people of the tribe of 'Abdullah b. Ghatafan but none dared to do it before.
Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 540
A man came to the Prophets and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What is the matter with you?"
He said, "I have done a sexual relation with my wife (while fasting) in Ramadan" The Prophet (ﷺ) said to
him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He said, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Can you fast for two
successive months?" He said, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" He said, "I
have nothing." Later on an Irq (big basket) containing dates was given to the Prophet, and the Prophet (ﷺ)
said (to him), "Take this basket and give it in charity." The man said, "To poorer people than we?
Indeed, there is nobody between its (i.e., Medina's) two mountains who is poorer than we." The
Prophet then said, "Take it and feed your family with it."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 84, Hadith 4
On the authority of his father (Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas): When he (Sa'd) fell ill at Mecca (according to the version of Ibn Abi Kkalaf) - then the agreed version has: which brought him near to death - the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to visit him. He said: Messenger of Allah, I have a large amount of property, and my daughter is my only heir. May I give two-thirds (of my property) as a sadaqah (charity)? He said: No. He asked: Then a half ? He replied: No. He asked: Then one-third ? He replied: (You may will away) a third and third is a lot. To leave your heirs rich is better than to leave them poor begging from people. You will not spend anything, seeking thereby to please Allah, without being rewarded for it, even the mouthful you give your wife. I said: Messenger of Allah, shall I be left behind form immigration (to Medina)? He said: If you remain behind after me and do good works seeking the pleasure of Allah, your rank will be raised and degree increased. Perhaps you will not remain behind, and some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. He then said: O Allah, complete the immigration of my Companions and do not turn them back. But miserable was Sa'd b. Khawlah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lamented on him as he died at Mecca.
