"Urwah bin Az-Zubair told me that a woman stole at the time of the Messenger of Allah, during the Conquest. Her people went to Uswamah bin Zaid, to ask him to intercede." 'Urwah said: "When Usamah spoke to him concerning her, the face of the Messenger of Allah changed color and he said: 'Are you speaking to me concerning one of the Hadd punishments of Allah?" Usamah said: 'Pray to Allah for forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah.' When evening came, the Messenger of Allah stood up to deliver a speech. He praised Allah as He deserves, then he said: 'The people who came before you were destroyed because, whenever a noble person among them stole, they would carry out the Hadd punishment on him. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if Fatimah bint Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.' Then the Messenger of Allah ordered that the hand of that woman be cut off. After that she repented sincerely, and 'Aishah said: 'She used to come to me after that, and I would convey her needs to the Messenger of Allah."'
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 46, Hadith 34
The delegation of `Abdul Qais came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) We belong to the
tribe of Rabi`a. The infidels of Mudar tribe intervened between us and you so that we cannot come to
you except in the Sacred Months, so please order us some things we may act on and invite those left
behind to act on. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I order you to observe four things and forbid you from four
things: (I order you) to believe in Allah, i.e. to testify that None has the right to be worshipped except
Allah." The Prophet (ﷺ) pointed with finger indicating one and added, "To offer prayers perfectly: to give
Zakat, and to give one-fifth of the booty you win (for Allah's Sake). I forbid you to use Ad-Dubba',
An-Naquir, Al-Hantam and Al-Muzaffat, (Utensils used for preparing alcoholic liquors and drinks).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 395
"I passed by the Masjid when the people were absorbed in story-telling. So I entered upon 'Ali and said: 'O Commander of the believers! Do you not see the people are becoming engrossed in story-telling?' He said: 'They have been consumed with it?' I said: "Yes.' He said: 'As for me, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: "Indeed there comes a Fitnah" So I said: "What is the way out from it O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Allah's book. In it is news for what happened before you, and information about what comes after you, and judgement for what happens between you. It is the Criterion (between right and wrong) without jest. Whoever among the oppressive abandons it, Allah crushes him, and whoever seeks guidance from other than it, then Allah leaves him to stray. It is the firm rope of Allah, it is the wise remembrance, it is the straight path, and it is the one that the desires can not distort, nor can the tongues twist it, nor can the scholars ever have enough of it, and it shall not become dull from reciting it much, and the amazement of it does not diminish. It is the one that when the Jinns hear it, they did not hesitate to say about it: 'Verily, we have heard a wonderful Recitation (this Qur'an)! 'It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein.' Whoever speaks according to it then he has said the truth, and whoever acts according to it he is rewarded, and whoever judges by it he has judged justly, and whoever invites to it then he guides to the straight path." Take this O A'war!'."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 45, Hadith 32
Two men had a dispute in the presence of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). One of them said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!
Judge between us according to Allah's Laws." The other who was wiser, said, "Yes, O Allah's
Apostle! Judge between us according to Allah's Laws and allow me to speak. The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Speak." He said, "My son was a laborer serving this (person) and he committed illegal sexual
intercourse with his wife, The people said that my son is to be stoned to death, but I ransomed him
with one-hundred sheep and a slave girl. Then I asked the learned people, who informed me that my
son should receive one hundred lashes and will be exiled for one year, and stoning will be the lot for
the man's wife." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Indeed, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, I will judge
between you according to Allah's Laws: As for your sheep and slave girl, they are to be returned to
you." Then he scourged his son one hundred lashes and exiled him for one year. Then Unais Al-
Aslami was ordered to go to the wife of the second man, and if she confessed (the crime), then stone
her to death. She did confess, so he stoned her to death.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 83, Hadith 13
(one of them said more than his friend): The Prophet (ﷺ) set out in the company of more than onethousand
of his companions in the year of Al-Hudaibiya, and when he reached Dhul-Hulaifa, he
garlanded his Hadi (i.e. sacrificing animal), assumed the state of Ihram for `Umra from that place and
sent a spy of his from Khuzi'a (tribe). The Prophet (ﷺ) proceeded on till he reached (a village called)
Ghadir-al-Ashtat. There his spy came and said, "The Quraish (infidels) have collected a great number
of people against you, and they have collected against you the Ethiopians, and they will fight with
you, and will stop you from entering the Ka`ba and prevent you." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O people! Give
me your opinion. Do you recommend that I should destroy the families and offspring of those who
want to stop us from the Ka`ba? If they should come to us (for peace) then Allah will destroy a spy
from the pagans, or otherwise we will leave them in a miserable state." On that Abu Bakr said, "O
Allah Apostle! You have come with the intention of visiting this House (i.e. Ka`ba) and you do not
want to kill or fight anybody. So proceed to it, and whoever should stop us from it, we will fight him."
On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Proceed on, in the Name of Allah !"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 220
Yahya related to me from Malik that it reached him that a slave
of Abdullah ibn Umar escaped and one of his horses wandered off, and
the idol worshippers seized them. Then the Muslims recaptured them,
and they were returned to Abdullah ibn Umar, before the division of
the spoils took place.
I heard Malik say about muslim
property that had been seized by the enemy, "If it is noticed before
the distribution, then it is returned to itsowner. Whatever has
already been distributed is not returned to anyone."
Malik,
when asked about a man whose young male slave was taken by the idol
worshippers and then the Muslims re-captured him, said, "The owner is
more entitled to him without having to pay his price or value or
having to incur any loss before the distribution takes place. If the
distribution has already taken place then I think that the slave
belongs to his master for his price if the master wants him back."
Regarding an umm walad of a Muslim man who has been taken by
the idol worshippers and then recaptured by the Muslims and allotted
in the distribution of spoils and then recognised by her master after
the distribution, Malik said, "She is not to be enslaved. I think that
the Imam should pay a ransom for her for her master. If he does not
do it, then her master must pay a ransom for her and not leave her. I
do not think that she should be made a slave by whoever takes her and
intercourse with her is not halal. She is in the position of a free
woman because her master would be required to pay compensation if she
injured somebody and so she is in the same position (as a wife). He
must not leave the mother of his son to be enslaved nor may
intercourse with her be made halal."
Malik was asked about a
man who went to enemy territory to pay ransom or to trade, and he
bought a free man or a slave, or they were given to him. He said, "As
for the free man, the price he buys him for is a debt against the man
and he is not made a slave. If the captive is given to him freely, he
is free and owes nothing unless the man gave something in recompense
for him. That is a debt against the free man, the same as if a ransom
had been paid for him. As for a slave, his former master can choose to
take him back and pay his price to the man who bought him or he can
choose to leave him, as he wishes. If he was given to the man, the
former master is more entitled to him, and he owes nothing for him
unless the man gave something for him in recompense. Whatever he gave
for him is a loss against the master if he wants him back."
Muwatta Malik Book 21, Hadith 19
I said to Ibn `Abbas, "Nauf Al-Bukah claims that Moses, the companion of Al-Khadir was not Moses
(the prophet) of the children of Israel, but some other Moses." Ibn `Abbas said, "Allah's enemy (i.e.
Nauf) has told a lie. Ubai bin Ka`b told us that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Once Moses stood up and addressed
Bani Israel. He was asked who was the most learned man amongst the people. He said, 'I.' Allah
admonished him as he did not attribute absolute knowledge to Him (Allah). So, Allah said to him,
'Yes, at the junction of the two seas there is a Slave of Mine who is more learned than you.' Moses
said, 'O my Lord! How can I meet him?'
Allah said, 'Take a fish and put it in a large basket and you will find him at the place where you will
lose the fish.' Moses took a fish and put it in a basket and proceeded along with his (servant) boy,
Yusha` bin Noon, till they reached the rock where they laid their heads (i.e. lay down). Moses slept,
and the fish, moving out of the basket, fell into the sea. It took its way into the sea (straight) as in a
tunnel. Allah stopped the flow of water over the fish and it became like an arch (the Prophet (ﷺ) pointed
out this arch with his hands). They travelled the rest of the night, and the next day Moses said to his
boy (servant), 'Give us our food, for indeed, we have suffered much fatigue in this journey of ours.'
Moses did not feel tired till he crossed that place which Allah had ordered him to seek after. His boy
(servant) said to him, 'Do you know that when we were sitting near that rock, I forgot the fish, and
none but Satan caused me to forget to tell (you) about it, and it took its course into the sea in an
amazing way?.' So there was a path for the fish and that astonished them. Moses said, 'That was what
we were seeking after.' So, both of them retraced their footsteps till they reached the rock.
There they saw a man Lying covered with a garment. Moses greeted him and he replied saying, 'How
do people greet each other in your land?' Moses said, 'I am Moses.' The man asked, 'Moses of Bani
Israel?' Moses said, 'Yes, I have come to you so that you may teach me from those things which Allah
has taught you.' He said, 'O Moses! I have some of the Knowledge of Allah which Allah has taught
me, and which you do not know, while you have some of the Knowledge of Allah which Allah has
taught you and which I do not know.' Moses asked, 'May I follow you?' He said, 'But you will not be
able to remain patient with me for how can you be patient about things which you will not be able to
understand?'
(Moses said, 'You will find me, if Allah so will, truly patient, and I will not disobey you in aught.') So,
both of them set out walking along the sea-shore, a boat passed by them and they asked the crew of
the boat to take them on board. The crew recognized Al-Khadir and so they took them on board
without fare. When they were on board the boat, a sparrow came and stood on the edge of the boat and
dipped its beak once or twice into the sea.
Al-Khadir said to Moses, 'O Moses! My knowledge and your knowledge have not decreased Allah's
Knowledge except as much as this sparrow has decreased the water of the sea with its beak.' Then
suddenly Al-Khadir took an adze and plucked a plank, and Moses did not notice it till he had plucked
a plank with the adze. Moses said to him, 'What have you done? They took us on board charging us
nothing; yet you I have intentionally made a hole in their boat so as to drown its passengers. Verily,
you have done a dreadful thing.' Al-Khadir replied, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to
remain patient with me?' Moses replied, 'Do not blame me for what I have forgotten, and do not be
hard upon me for my fault.' So the first excuse of Moses was that he had forgotten. When they had left
the sea, they passed by a boy playing with other boys.
Al-Khadir took hold of the boys head and plucked it with his hand like this. (Sufyan, the sub narrator
pointed with his fingertips as if he was plucking some fruit.) Moses said to him, "Have you killed an
innocent person who has not killed any person? You have really done a horrible thing." Al-Khadir
said, "Did I not tell you that you could not remain patient with me?' Moses said "If I ask you about
anything after this, don't accompany me. You have received an excuse from me.' Then both of them
went on till they came to some people of a village, and they asked its inhabitant for wood but they
refused to entertain them as guests. Then they saw therein a wall which was just going to collapse
(and Al Khadir repaired it just by touching it with his hands). (Sufyan, the sub-narrator, pointed with
his hands, illustrating how Al-Khadir passed his hands over the wall upwards.) Moses said, "These are
the people whom we have called on, but they neither gave us food, nor entertained us as guests, yet
you have repaired their wall. If you had wished, you could have taken wages for it." Al-Khadir said,
"This is the parting between you and me, and I shall tell you the explanation of those things on which
you could not remain patient." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "We wished that Moses could have remained
patient by virtue of which Allah might have told us more about their story. (Sufyan the sub-narrator
said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on Moses! If he had remained patient, we
would have been told further about their case.")
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 60, Hadith 74
"The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) made a bond of brotherhood between Salman and Abu Ad-Darda. Salman went to visit Abu Ad-Darda, and saw Umm Ad-Darda wearing shabby clothes, So he said: 'Why are you wearing such shabby clothes?' She said: 'Your brother Abu Ad-Darda has no interest in the world.' So when Abu Ad-Darda arrived, he prepared some food for him (Salman) and said: 'Eat, for I am fasting.' He said: 'I shall not eat until you eat.'" He said: "So he ate. When night came Abu Ad-Darda started to leave and stand (in prayer), but Salman said to him: 'Sleep.' So he slept. Then he went to stand (in prayer) but he said to him: 'Sleep'. So he slept. When the morning (Fajr) came,Salman said: 'Get up now.'So he got up to perform Salat. Then he (Salman) said: 'Indeed your self has a right upon you, your Lord has a right upon you, your guest has a right upon you, and your family has a right upon you. So give each the right they are due. The Prophet (s.a.w), and that was mentioned to him, so he said: 'Salman has told the truth.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 36, Hadith 111
I said to Ata': Which time do you deem fit for me to say the 'Isya' prayer, -as an Imam or alone, -that time which is called by people 'Atama? He said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas saying: The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) one night delayed the 'Isya' prayer till the people went to sleep. They woke up and again went to sleep and again woke up. Then 'Umar b. Khattab stood up and said (loudly)" Prayer." Ata' further reported that Ibn 'Abbas said: The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) came out, and as if I am still seeing him with water trickling from his head, and with his hand placed on one side of the head, and he said: Were it not hard for my Ummah, I would have ordered them to observe this prayer like this (i. e. at late hours). I inquired from 'Ata' how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) placed his hand upon his head as Ibn Abbas had informed. So Ata' spread his fingers a little and then placed the ends of his fingers on the side of his head. He then moved them like this over his head till the thumb touched that part of the ear which is near the face and then it (went) to the earlock and the part of the heard. It (the bind) neither held nor caught anything but this is how (it moved oil). I said to Ata': Was it mentioned to you (by Ibn Abbas) how long did the Apostle (ﷺ) delay it (the prayer) during that eight? He said: I do not know (I cannot give you the exact time). Ali' said: I love that I should say prayer, whether as an Imam or alone at delayed hours as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said that night, but if It is hard upon you in your individual capacity or upon people in the congregation and you are their Imam, then say prayer ('Isha') at the middle hours neither too early nor too late.
Sahih Muslim Book 5, Hadith 285
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "My example and the example o the people is like that of a person who lit a fire
and let the moths, butterflies and these insects fall in it." He also said, "There were two women, each
of whom had a child with her. A wolf came and took away the child of one of them, whereupon the
other said, 'It has taken your child.' The first said, 'But it has taken your child.' So they both carried the
case before David who judged that the living child be given to the elder lady. So both of them went to
Solomon bin David and informed him (of the case). He said, 'Bring me a knife so as to cut the child
into two pieces and distribute it between them.' The younger lady said, 'May Allah be merciful to you!
Don't do that, for it is her (i.e. the other lady's) child.' So he gave the child to the younger lady."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 60, Hadith 98
Some people said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He said,
"Do you crowd and squeeze each other on looking at the sun when it is not hidden by clouds?" They
replied, "No, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." He said, "Do you crowd and squeeze each other on looking at the
moon when it is full and not hidden by clouds?" They replied, No, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "So
you will see Him (your Lord) on the Day of Resurrection similarly Allah will gather all the people and
say, 'Whoever used to worship anything should follow that thing. 'So, he who used to worship the sun,
will follow it, and he who used to worship the moon will follow it, and he who used to worship false
deities will follow them; and then only this nation (i.e., Muslims) will remain, including their
hypocrites. Allah will come to them in a shape other than they know and will say, 'I am your Lord.'
They will say, 'We seek refuge with Allah from you. This is our place; (we will not follow you) till
our Lord comes to us, and when our Lord comes to us, we will recognize Him.
Then Allah will come to then in a shape they know and will say, "I am your Lord.' They will say, '(No
doubt) You are our Lord,' and they will follow Him. Then a bridge will be laid over the (Hell) Fire."
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) added, "I will be the first to cross it. And the invocation of the Apostles on that Day,
will be 'Allahumma Sallim, Sallim (O Allah, save us, save us!),' and over that bridge there will be
hooks Similar to the thorns of As Sa'dan (a thorny tree). Didn't you see the thorns of As-Sa'dan?" The
companions said, "Yes, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." He added, "So the hooks over that bridge will be like the
thorns of As-Sa-dan except that their greatness in size is only known to Allah. These hooks will snatch
the people according to their deeds. Some people will be ruined because of their evil deeds, and some
will be cut into pieces and fall down in Hell, but will be saved afterwards, when Allah has finished the
judgments among His slaves, and intends to take out of the Fire whoever He wishes to take out from
among those who used to testify that none had the right to be worshipped but Allah.
We will order the angels to take them out and the angels will know them by the mark of the traces of
prostration (on their foreheads) for Allah banned the f ire to consume the traces of prostration on the
body of Adam's son. So they will take them out, and by then they would have burnt (as coal), and then
water, called Ma'ul Hayat (water of life) will be poured on them, and they will spring out like a seed
springs out on the bank of a rainwater stream, and there will remain one man who will be facing the
(Hell) Fire and will say, 'O Lord! It's (Hell's) vapor has Poisoned and smoked me and its flame has
burnt me; please turn my face away from the Fire.' He will keep on invoking Allah till Allah says,
'Perhaps, if I give you what you want), you will ask for another thing?' The man will say, 'No, by Your
Power, I will not ask You for anything else.'
Then Allah will turn his face away from the Fire. The man will say after that, 'O Lord, bring me near
the gate of Paradise.' Allah will say (to him), 'Didn't you promise not to ask for anything else? Woe to
you, O son of Adam ! How treacherous you are!' The man will keep on invoking Allah till Allah will
say, 'But if I give you that, you may ask me for something else.' The man will say, 'No, by Your
Power. I will not ask for anything else.' He will give Allah his covenant and promise not to ask for
anything else after that. So Allah will bring him near to the gate of Paradise, and when he sees what is
in it, he will remain silent as long as Allah will, and then he will say, 'O Lord! Let me enter Paradise.'
Allah will say, 'Didn't you promise that you would not ask Me for anything other than that? Woe to
you, O son of Adam ! How treacherous you are!' On that, the man will say, 'O Lord! Do not make me
the most wretched of Your creation,' and will keep on invoking Allah till Allah will smile and when
Allah will smile because of him, then He will allow him to enter Paradise, and when he will enter
Paradise, he will be addressed, 'Wish from so-and-so.' He will wish till all his wishes will be fulfilled,
then Allah will say, All this (i.e. what you have wished for) and as much again therewith are for you.'
"
Abu Huraira added: That man will be the last of the people of Paradise to enter (Paradise).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 81, Hadith 161
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) slept near me one day,
then he woke up smiling. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what has
made
you smile?’ He said: ‘People of my nation who were shown to
me (in my
dream) riding across this sea like kings on thrones.’ I
said:
‘Supplicate to Allah to make me one of them.’” So he
prayed for her.
Then he slept again, and did likewise, and she said
the same as she
said before, and he replied in the same manner. She
said: “Pray to
Allah to make me one of them,” and he said: “You
will be one of the
first ones.” He said: “Then she went out with
her husband, ‘Ubadah bin
Samit, as a fighter, the first time that
the Muslims crossed the sea
with Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan. On their
way back, after they had
finished fighting, they stopped in Sham. An
animal was brought near
for her to ride it, but it threw her off, and
she died.”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 24, Hadith 24
"I went on a campaign with the Messenger of Allah riding a camel of ours," then he quoted the whole Hadih. Then he said words to the effect that: "The camel got tried and the Prophet hit it, so it became energetic and came to the front of the army. The Prophet said: 'O Jabir, I see that your camel has become energetic.' I said: "It is because of your blessing, O Messenger of Allah,' He said: 'Sell it to me, and you can ride it till we arrive (in Al-Madinah). 'So I sold it to him. I was in great need of it myself but I felt too shy to refuse. When we finished our campaign, and we were close to Al-Madinah, I asked his permission to go on ahead. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am newly married.' He said; 'Have you married a virgin or a previously married woman?' I said: 'A previously married woman, O Messenger of Allah. 'Abdullah bin 'Arm died and left behind young druthers, and I did not like to bring to them someone who was like them, so I married a previously married woman who could teach the, and rise them with good manners.' So he gave me permission, and said to me; 'Go to When I arrived, I told my maternal uncle that I had sold the camel and he scolded me. When the Messenger of Allah came, I brought the camel to him, and he gave me the price of the camel, and the camel, and share (of the spoils of war) with the rest of the people.
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 44, Hadith 190
The Prophet (ﷺ) went out to one of the gardens of Medina for some business and I went out to follow him.
When he entered the garden, I sat at its gate and said to myself, "To day I will be the gatekeeper of the
Prophet though he has not ordered me." The Prophet (ﷺ) went and finished his need and went to sit on the
constructed edge of the well and uncovered his legs and hung them in the well. In the meantime Abu
Bakr came and asked permission to enter. I said (to him), "Wait till I get you permission." Abu Bakr
waited outside and I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Prophet! Abu Bakr asks your permission
to enter." He said, "Admit him, and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise." So Abu Bakr
entered and sat on the right side of the Prophet (ﷺ) and uncovered his legs and hung them in the well.
Then `Umar came and I said (to him), "Wait till I get you permission." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Admit him
and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise." So `Umar entered and sat on the left side of the
Prophet and uncovered his legs and hung them in the well so that one side of the well became fully
occupied and there remained no place for any-one to sit. Then `Uthman came and I said (to him),
"Wait till I get permission for you." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Admit him and give him the glad tidings of
entering Paradise with a calamity which will befall him." When he entered, he could not find any
place to sit with them so he went to the other edge of the well opposite them and uncovered his legs
and hung them in the well. I wished that a brother of mine would come, so I invoked Allah for his
coming. (Ibn Al-Musaiyab said, "I interpreted that (narration) as indicating their graves. The first three
are together and the grave of `Uthman is separate from theirs.")
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 92, Hadith 48
Yahya said that Malik said, "When the relatives of the deceased
accept the blood-money then it is inherited according to the Book of
Allah. Daughters of the dead man inherit and so do sisters, and
whichever women would inherit from him ordinarily.
If the
women do not take all his inheritance, then what remains goes to the
agnatic relations who most deserve to inherit from him in conjunction
with the women."
Malik said, "When one of the heirs of a man
killed by mistake attempts to take his due from the blood-money while
his companions are absent, he may not do that, and he has no right to
any of the blood-money, however large or small, unless the qasama has
been completed by him. If he swears fifty oaths then he has the right
to his portion of the blood-money. That is because the blood-money is
not established as due without there being fifty oaths, and the blood-
money is not established as due unless the responsibility for the
blood is established. If any one of the heirs comes after that he
swears a number of the oaths commensurate with his fraction of the
inheritance and takes his right until all the heirs exact their
complete right. If a maternal uncle comes he has one sixth and must
swear one sixth of the fifty oaths. So whoever swears may take his due
from the blood-money and whoever abstains annuls his right. If one of
the heirs is absent or is a child who has not reached puberty, those
who are present swear fifty oaths and if the one who was absent comes
after that or the child reaches puberty, they swear. and they swear
according to their due of the blood-money and according to their
shares of inheritance from it."
Yahya said that Malik said,
"This is the best I have heard on the matter."
Muwatta Malik Book 44, Hadith 5
