Malik related to me from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from
Yahya ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hatib that some slaves of Hatib stole a
she-camel belonging to a man from the Muzayna tribe and they
slaughtered it. The case was brought before Umar ibn al-Khattab, and
Umar ordered Kathir ibn as-Salt to cut off their hands. Then Umar said
to Habib, "I think you must be starving them," and he added, "By
Allah! I will make you pay such a fine that it will be heavy for you."
He enquired of the man from the Muzayna tribe, "What was the price of
your camel?" The Muzayni said, "By Allah, I refused to sell her for
400 dirhams.'' Umar said, ''Give him 800 dirhams."
Yahya said
that he heard Malik say, "Doubling the price is not the behaviour of
our community. What people have settled on among us is that the man is
obliged to pay the value of the camel or animal on the day he took
it."
Muwatta Malik Book 36, Hadith 49
Malik spoke about what was done among them in the case of a group
of people who bought goods, drapery or slaves, and a man heard about
it and said to one of the group, "I have heard the description and
situation of the drapery goods you bought from so-and-so. Shall I give
you such-and-such profit to take over your portion?" This person
agreed, and the man gave him the profit and became a partner in his
place. When he looked at the purchase, he saw that it was ugly and
found it too expensive.
Malik said, "It is obliged on him and
there is no choice in it for him if he bought it according to a list
of contents and the description was well-known."
Malik spoke
about a man who had drapery goods sent to him, and salesmen came to
him and he read to them his list of contents and said, "In each bag is
such-and-such a wrap from Basra and such-and-such a light wrap from
Sabir. Their size is such-and-such," and he named to them types of
drapery goods by their sort, and he said, "Buy them from me according
to this description." They bought the bags according to what he
described to them, and then they bought them and found them too
expensive and regretted it. Malik said, "The sale is binding on them,
if the goods agree with the list of contents on which he sold them."
Malik said, "This is the way of doing things which people
still use today. They permit the sale among them when the goods agree
with the list of contents and are not different from it. "
Muwatta Malik Book 31, Hadith 79
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah will gather all the people on the Day of Resurrection and they will say,
'Let us request someone to intercede for us with our Lord so that He may relieve us from this place of
ours.'
Then they will go to Adam and say, 'You are the one whom Allah created with His Own Hands, and
breathed in you of His soul, and ordered the angels to prostrate to you; so please intercede for us with
our Lord.' Adam will reply, 'I am not fit for this undertaking, and will remember his sin, and will say,
'Go to Noah, the first Apostle sent by Allah'
They will go to him and he will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking', and will remember his sin and
say, 'Go to Abraham whom Allah took as a Khalil.
They will go to him (and request similarly). He will reply, 'I am not fit for this undertaking,' and will
remember his sin and say, 'Go to Moses to whom Allah spoke directly.'
They will go to Moses and he will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking,' and will remember his sin
and say, 'Go to Jesus.'
They will go to him, and he will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking, go to Muhammad as Allah has
forgiven his past and future sins.'
They will come to me and I will ask my Lord's permission, and when I see Him, I will fall down in
prostration to Him, and He will leave me in that state as long as (He) Allah will, and then I will be
addressed. 'Raise up your head (O Muhammad)! Ask, and your request will be granted, and say, and
your saying will be listened to; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.' Then I will raise my
head, and I will glorify and praise my Lord with a saying(i.e. invocation) He will teach me, and then I
will intercede, Allah will fix a limit for me (i.e., certain type of people for whom I may intercede), and
I will take them out of the (Hell) Fire and let them enter Paradise. Then I will come back (to Allah)
and fall in prostration, and will do the same for the third and fourth times till no-one remains in the
(Hell) Fire except those whom the Qur'an has imprisoned therein." (The sub-narrator, Qatada used to
say at that point, "...those upon whom eternity (in Hell) has been imposed.") (See Hadith No. 3, Vol
6).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 81, Hadith 154
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying (the version of Sulayman has: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say) after his prayer:-
"O Allah, our Lord and Lord of everything, I bear witness that Thou art the Lord alone Who hast no partner; O Allah, Our Lord and Lord of everything, I bear witness that Muhammad is Thy servant and Thy apostle ; O Allah, our Lord and Lord of everything, I bear witness that all the servants are brethren; O Allah, our Lord and Lord of everything make me sincere to Thee, and my family too at every moment, in this world and in the world hereafter, O Possessor of glory and honour, listen to me and answer. Allah is incomparably great. O Allah, Light of the heavens and of the earth".
The narrator Sulaiman b. Dawud said: "Lord of the heavens and of the earth, Allah is incomparably great. Allah is sufficient for me; and the excellent guardian is He; Allah is incomparably great.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 8, Hadith 93
the Prophet (saas) said to a man: "When you go to lay down, or go to your bed, say: Allahumma aslamtu wajhi ilayka, wa al-ja'tu zahri ilayka, wa fawwadtu amri ilayka, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayka, la malja'a wa la manja'a minka illa ilayka, amantu bi kitabikal-ladhi anzalta, wa nabiyyikal arsalta [O Allah, I have submitted my face (i.e., myself) to You, and I am under Your command (i.e., I depend upon You in all my affairs), and I put my trust in You, hoping for Your reward and fearing Your punishment. There is no fleeing from You and no refuge from You except with You. I believe in Your Book that You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent).' Then if you die that night, you will die in a state of the Fitrah (nature), and if you wake in the morning you will wake with a great deal of good."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 34, Hadith 50
“A Jewish man said in the
marketplace of Al-Madinah: ‘By the One Who chose Musa above all of
mankind.’ An Ansari man raised his hand and slapped him. He said:
‘How
dare you say this when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is among
us?’
Mention of that was made to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and
he said:
‘Allah says: “And the trumpet will be blown, and all who
are in the
heavens and all who are on the earth will swoon away,
except him whom
Allah wills. Then it will be blown a second time, and
behold they will
be standing, looking on (waiting).” I will
be the first one to
raise his head, and I will see Musa holding on to
one of the pillars
of the Throne, and I do not know whether he will
have raised his head
before me, or he will be one of those whom Allah
exempts. And whoever
says that I am better than Yunus bin Matta, he
is lying.”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 37, Hadith 175
When the Prophet (ﷺ) had finished from the battle of Hunain, he sent Abu Amir at the head of an army to
Autas He (i.e. Abu Amir) met Duraid bin As Summa and Duraid was killed and Allah defeated his
companions. The Prophet (ﷺ) sent me with Abu 'Amir. Abu Amir was shot at his knee with an arrow
which a man from Jushm had shot and fixed into his knee. I went to him and said, "O Uncle! Who
shot you?" He pointed me out (his killer) saying, "That is my killer who shot me (with an arrow)." So
I headed towards him and overtook him, and when he saw me, he fled, and I followed him and started
saying to him, "Won't you be ashamed? Won't you stop?" So that person stopped, and we exchanged
two hits with the swords and I killed him.
Then I said to Abu 'Amir. "Allah has killed your killer." He said, "Take out this arrow" So I removed
it, and water oozed out of the wound. He then said, "O son of my brother! Convey my compliments to
the Prophet (ﷺ) and request him to ask Allah's Forgiveness for me." Abu Amir made me his successor in
commanding the people (i.e. troops). He survived for a short while and then died. (Later) I returned
and entered upon the Prophet (ﷺ) at his house, and found him lying in a bed made of stalks of date-palm
leaves knitted with ropes, and on it there was bedding. The strings of the bed had their traces over his
back and sides. Then I told the Prophet (ﷺ) about our and Abu Amir's news and how he had said "Tell him
to ask for Allah's Forgiveness for me."
The Prophet (ﷺ) asked for water, performed ablution and then raised hands, saying, "O Allah's Forgive
`Ubaid, Abu Amir." At that time I saw the whiteness of the Prophet's armpits. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said,
"O Allah, make him (i.e. Abu Amir) on the Day of Resurrection, superior to many of Your human
creatures." I said, "Will you ask Allah's Forgiveness for me?" (On that) the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah,
forgive the sins of `Abdullah bin Qais and admit him to a nice entrance (i.e. paradise) on the Day of
Resurrection." Abu Burda said, "One of the prayers was for Abu 'Amir and the other was for Abu
Musa (i.e. `Abdullah bin Qais).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 353
(the wife of the Prophet) "When the ailment of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) became aggravated, he requested his
wives to permit him to be (treated) nursed in my house, and they gave him permission. He came out
(to my house), walking between two men with his feet dragging on the ground, between `Abbas bin
`Abdul--Muttalib and another man" 'Ubaidullah said, "I told `Abdullah of what `Aisha had said,
`Abdullah bin `Abbas said to me, 'Do you know who is the other man whom `Aisha did not name?' I
said, 'No.' Ibn `Abbas said, 'It was `Ali bin Abu Talib." `Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to narrate
saying, "When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) entered my house and his disease became aggravated, he said, " Pour
on me the water of seven water skins, the mouths of which have not been untied, so that I may give
advice to the people.' So we let him sit in a big basin belonging to Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) and
then started to pour water on him from these water skins till he started pointing to us with his hands
intending to say, 'You have done your job." `Aisha added, "Then he went out to the people and led
them in prayer and preached to them."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 463
"The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed and stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up and (remained standing) for a long time." (One of the narrators) Shu'bh said: "I think he said something similar concerning prostration."- "He started weeping and blowing during his prostration and said: 'Lord, You did not tell me that You would do that while I am asking You for forgiveness; You did not tell me that You would do that while I was still among them.' When he finished praying he said: "Paradise was shown to me, and if I had stretched forth my hand I could have taken some of its fruits. And Hell was shown to me, so I started blowing for fear that its heat might overwhelm you. I saw therein the thief who stole the two camels of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ); and I saw therein the brother of Banu As-Du'du; the thief who stole from the pilgrims, and when he was caught he said: The crooked stick did it; and I saw therein a tall black woman who was being punished because of a cat she tied up and did not feed or give it water, and she did not let it eat of the vermin of the earth, until it died. Then sun and the moon do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone, but they are two of the signs of Allah. If one of them becomes eclipsed'- or he said: 'if one of them does anything like that'- 'then hasten to remember Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 16, Hadith 38
When it was the day of (the battle of) Hunain, I saw a Muslim man fighting with one of the pagans
and another pagan was hiding himself behind the Muslim in order to kill him. So I hurried towards the
pagan who was hiding behind the Muslim to kill him, and he raised his hand to hit me but I hit his
hand and cut it off. That man got hold of me and pressed me so hard that I was afraid (that I would
die), then he knelt down and his grip became loose and I pushed him and killed him. The Muslims
(excepting the Prophet (ﷺ) and some of his companions) started fleeing and I too, fled with them.
Suddenly I met `Umar bin Al-Khattab amongst the people and I asked him, "What is wrong with the
people?" He said, "It is the order of Allah" Then the people returned to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (after
defeating the enemy). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever produces a proof that he has killed an infidel,
will have the spoils of the killed man." So I got up to look for an evidence to prove that I had killed an
infidel, but I could not find anyone to bear witness for me, so I sat down. Then it came to my mind
(that I should speak of it) and I mentioned the case to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). A man from the persons who
were sitting with him (i.e. the Prophet), said, "The arms of the deceased one whom he ( i.e. Abu
Qatada) has mentioned, are with me, so please compensate him for it (i.e. the spoils)," Abu Bakr said,
"No, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) will not give it (i.e. the spoils) to a weak humble person from Quraish and leave
one of Allah's Lions who fights on behalf of Allah and His Apostle." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then got up and
gave that (spoils) to me, and I bought with it, a garden which was the first property I got after
embracing Islam.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 352
'Umar b. Khattab, delivered the Friday sermon and he made a mention of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr. He (further) said: I saw in a dream that a cock pecked me twice, and I perceive that my death is near. Some people have suggested me to appoint my successor. And Allah would not destroy His religion. His caliphate and that with which He sent His Apostle (ﷺ) If death approaches me soon, the (issue) of Caliphate (would be decided) by the consent of these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remained well pleased till his death. And I know fully well that some people would blame me that I killed with these very hands of mine some persons who apparently professed (Islam). And if they do this (blame me) they are the enemies of Allah, and are non-believers and have gone astray. And I leave not after me anything which to my mind seems more important than Kalala. And I never turned towards the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (for guidance) more often than this Kalala, and he (the Holy Prophet) was not annoyed with me on any other (issue) than this: (And he was so perturbed) that he struck his fingers on my chest and said: Does this verse. that is at the end of Surat al-Nisa'. which was revealed in the hot season not suffice you? And if I live longer I would decide this (problem so clearly) that one who reads the Qur'an, or one who does not read it, would be able to take (correct), decisions (under its light). He ('Umar) further said: Allah! I call You witness on these governors of lands, that I sent them to (the peoples of these lands) so that they should administer justice amongst them, teach them their religion and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and distribute amongst them the spoils of war and refer to me that which they find difficult to perform. O people. you eat 'these two plants and these are onions and garlic. and I find them nothing but repugnant for I saw that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sensed the odour of these two from a person in a mosque, he was made to go to al-Baqi'. So he who eats it should (make its odour) die by cooking it well.
Sahih Muslim Book 5, Hadith 96
We were one hundred and thirty men sitting with the Prophet. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Have anyone of you
any food with him?" It happened that one man had one Sa of wheat flour (or so) which was turned
into dough then. After a while a tall lanky pagan came, driving some sheep. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked, 'Will
you sell us (a sheep), or give (it to) us as a gift?" The pagan said, "No, but I will sell it " So the
Prophet bought from him a sheep which was slaughtered, and then the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered that the liver,
the kidneys, lungs and heart, etc., of that sheep be roasted. By Allah, none of those one hundred and
thirty men but had his share of those things. The Prophet (ﷺ) gave to those who were present, and also
kept a share for those who were absent He then served that cooked sheep in two big trays and we all
ate together our fill; yet there remained a part of it in those two trays which I carried on the camel.
