“There was an old woman who used to
enter upon us and perform Ruqyah from erysipelas: Contagious disease
which causes fever and leaves a red coloration of the skin. We had a
bed with long legs, and when ‘Abdullah entered he would clear his
throat and make noise. He entered one day and when she heard his
voice she veiled herself from him. He came and sat beside me, and
touched me, and he found a sting. He said: ‘What is this?’ I
said: ‘An amulet against erysipelas.’ He pulled it, broke it and
threw it away, and said: ‘The family of ‘Abdullah has no need of
polytheism.’ I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “Ruqyah
(i.e., which consist of the names of idols and devils etc.), amulets
and Tiwalah (charms) are polytheism.’”
“I said: ‘I went out one day and so-and-so looked at me, and my eye began to water on the side nearest him. When I recited Ruqyah for it, it stopped, but if I did not recite Ruqyah it watered again.’ He said: ‘That is Satan, if you obey him he leaves you alone but if you disobey him he pokes you with his finger in your eye. But if you do what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to do, that will be better for you and more effective in healing. Sprinkle water in your eye and say: Adhhibil-bas Rabban-nas, washfi Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shafi’uka, shafi’an la yughadiru saqaman (Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness).’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 31, Hadith 95
Malik related to me from Nafi from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from
A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, that she bought a cushion which had pictures on it. When the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw it,
he stopped at the door and did not enter. She recognised disapproval
on his face and said, "Messenger of Allah, I turn in repentance to
Allah and His Messenger. What have I done wrong?" The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "What is the
meaning of this cushion?" She said, "I bought it for you to sit and
recline on." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "Those who make such pictures will be punished on the Day
of Rising. It will be said to them, 'Bring to life what you have
created'. Then he said, 'The angels do not enter a house in which
there are pictures.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 54, Hadith 8
While I was (sitting) among the people in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) a woman stood up and said,
"O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! She has given herself in marriage to you; please give your opinion of her." The
Prophet did not give her any reply. She again stood up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! She has given
herself (in marriage) to you; so please give your opinion of her. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not give her any
reply. She again stood up for the third time and said, "She has given herself in marriage to you: so
give your opinion of her." So a man stood up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Marry her to me." The
Prophet asked him, "Have you got anything?" He said, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Go and search for
something, even if it were an iron ring." The man went and searched and then returned saying, "I
could not find anything, not even an iron ring." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do you know something of
the Qur'an (by heart)?" He replied, "I know (by heart) such Sura and such Sura." The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Go! I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an (by heart).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 84
Abu Bakr invited a group of people and told me, "Look after your guests." Abu Bakr added, I am
going to visit the Prophet (ﷺ) and you should finish serving them before I return." `Abdur-Rahman said,
So I went at once and served them with what was available at that time in the house and requested
them to eat." They said, "Where is the owner of the house (i.e., Abu Bakr)?" `Abdur-Rahman said,
"Take your meal." They said, "We will not eat till the owner of the house comes." `Abdur-Rahman
said, "Accept your meal from us, for if my father comes and finds you not having taken your meal yet,
we will be blamed severely by him, but they refused to take their meals . So I was sure that my father
would be angry with me. When he came, I went away (to hide myself) from him. He asked, "What
have you done (about the guests)?" They informed him the whole story. Abu Bakr called, "O `Abdur
Rahman!" I kept quiet. He then called again. "O `Abdur-Rahman!" I kept quiet and he called again,
"O ignorant (boy)! I beseech you by Allah, if you hear my voice, then come out!" I came out and said,
"Please ask your guests (and do not be angry with me)." They said, "He has told the truth; he brought
the meal to us." He said, "As you have been waiting for me, by Allah, I will not eat of it tonight."
They said, "By Allah, we will not eat of it till you eat of it." He said, I have never seen a night like this
night in evil. What is wrong with you? Why don't you accept your meals of hospitality from us?" (He
said to me), "Bring your meal." I brought it to him, and he put his hand in it, saying, "In the name of
Allah. The first (state of fury) was because of Satan." So Abu Bakr ate and so did his guests.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 167
`Aisha said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to her, "O Aisha! Were your nation not close to the Pre-Islamic
Period of Ignorance, I would have had the Ka`ba demolished and would have included in it the portion
which had been left, and would have made it at a level with the ground and would have made two
doors for it, one towards the east and the other towards the west, and then by doing this it would have
been built on the foundations laid by Abraham." That was what urged Ibn-Az-Zubair to demolish the
Ka`ba. Jazz said, "I saw Ibn-Az-Zubair when he demolished and rebuilt the Ka`ba and included in it a
portion of Al-Hijr (the unroofed portion of Ka`ba which is at present in the form of a compound
towards the northwest of the Ka`ba). I saw the original foundations of Abraham which were of stones
resembling the humps of camels." So Jarir asked Yazid, "Where was the place of those stones?" Jazz
said, "I will just now show it to you." So Jarir accompanied Yazid and entered Al-Hijr, and Jazz
pointed to a place and said, "Here it is." Jarir said, "It appeared to me about six cubits from Al-Hijr or
so."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 25, Hadith 72
Yahya related to me from Malik that it reached him that a slave
of Abdullah ibn Umar escaped and one of his horses wandered off, and
the idol worshippers seized them. Then the Muslims recaptured them,
and they were returned to Abdullah ibn Umar, before the division of
the spoils took place.
I heard Malik say about muslim
property that had been seized by the enemy, "If it is noticed before
the distribution, then it is returned to itsowner. Whatever has
already been distributed is not returned to anyone."
Malik,
when asked about a man whose young male slave was taken by the idol
worshippers and then the Muslims re-captured him, said, "The owner is
more entitled to him without having to pay his price or value or
having to incur any loss before the distribution takes place. If the
distribution has already taken place then I think that the slave
belongs to his master for his price if the master wants him back."
Regarding an umm walad of a Muslim man who has been taken by
the idol worshippers and then recaptured by the Muslims and allotted
in the distribution of spoils and then recognised by her master after
the distribution, Malik said, "She is not to be enslaved. I think that
the Imam should pay a ransom for her for her master. If he does not
do it, then her master must pay a ransom for her and not leave her. I
do not think that she should be made a slave by whoever takes her and
intercourse with her is not halal. She is in the position of a free
woman because her master would be required to pay compensation if she
injured somebody and so she is in the same position (as a wife). He
must not leave the mother of his son to be enslaved nor may
intercourse with her be made halal."
Malik was asked about a
man who went to enemy territory to pay ransom or to trade, and he
bought a free man or a slave, or they were given to him. He said, "As
for the free man, the price he buys him for is a debt against the man
and he is not made a slave. If the captive is given to him freely, he
is free and owes nothing unless the man gave something in recompense
for him. That is a debt against the free man, the same as if a ransom
had been paid for him. As for a slave, his former master can choose to
take him back and pay his price to the man who bought him or he can
choose to leave him, as he wishes. If he was given to the man, the
former master is more entitled to him, and he owes nothing for him
unless the man gave something for him in recompense. Whatever he gave
for him is a loss against the master if he wants him back."
Muwatta Malik Book 21, Hadith 19
"Hafsah bint 'Umar became single when (her husband) Khunais -meaning bin Hudhafah- (died). He was one of the Companions of the Prophet who had been present at Badr, and he died in Al-Madinah. I met 'Uthman bin 'Affan and offered Hafsah in marriage to him. I said: 'If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah.' He said: 'I will think about it.' A few days passed, then I met him and he said: 'I do not want to get married at the moment.'" 'Umar said: "Then I met Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'If you wish, I will marry Hafsah to you.' He did not give me any answer, and I felt more upset with him than I had with 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. Several days passed, then the Messenger of Allah proposed marriage to her, and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: 'Perhaps you felt upset with me when you offered Hafsah in marriage to me and I did not give you an answer?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from giving you an answer when you made the offer to me except the fact that I had heard the Messenger of Allah speak of her, and I did not want to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah; if he had left her, then I would have married her.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 26, Hadith 53
"I stayed overnight with my maternal aunt Maimunah bin Al-Harith, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stayed overnight with her. I saw him get up to relieve himself and he went to the waterskin and undid its string, then he performed wudu and that was moderate (in the amount of water used). Then he went to his bed and slept. Then he got up again and went to the waterskin and undid its string, and performed wudu again, like the first time. Then he stood and prayed, and when he prostrated he said: 'Allahummaj'al fi qalbi nuran waj'al fi sami' nuran waj'al fi basri nuran, waj'al min tahti nuran waj'al min fawqi nuran, wa 'an yamii nuran wa 'an yasari nuran waj'al amami nuran, waj'al khalfi nuran wa a'zimli nura (O Allah, place light in my heart, and place light in my hearing, and place light in my seeing, and place light beneath me, and place light above me, and light on my right, and light on my left, and place light behind me, and make the light greater for me.') Then he slept until he started to snore, then Bilal came and woke him up for the prayer."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 12, Hadith 93
Malik related to me from Nafi that Safiyya bint Abi Ubayd
informed him that a man who had had intercourse with a virgin slave-
girl and made her pregnant was brought to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. He
confessed to fornication, and he was not muhsan. Abu Bakr gave the
order and he was flogged with the hadd punishment. Then he was
banished to Fadak, (thirty miles from Madina).
Malik spoke
about a person who confessed to fornication and then retracted it and
said, "I didn't do it. I said that for such-and-such a reason," and he
mentioned the reason. Malik said, "That is accepted from him and the
hadd is not imposed on him. That is because the hadd is what is for
Allah, and it is only applied by one of two means, either by a clear
proof which establishes guilt or by a confession which is persisted in
so that the hadd is imposed. If someone persists in his confession,
the hadd is imposed on him."
Malik said, "I have not seen the
people of knowledge exiling slaves who have committed adultery."
Muwatta Malik Book 41, Hadith 13
Yahya related to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman
that Abu Said alKhudri returned from a journey and his family gave him
some meat. He asked whether it was meat from the sacrifice. They
replied that it was. Abu Said said, "Didn't the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbid that?" They said,
"There has been a new command from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, since you went away." Abu Said went out
and made enquiries about it and was told that the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had said,"I forbade you
before to eat meat of the sacrifice after three days, but now eat,
give sadaqa and store up. I forbade you before to make nabidh (by
soaking raisins or dates in water), but now make nabidh, but remember
every intoxicant is haram .I forbade you to visit graves, but now
visit them, and do not use bad language."
Muwatta Malik Book 23, Hadith 8
I became a guarantor for a payment, and I came to Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him). He said: Wait till I receive the sadaqah and I shall order it to be given to you. He then said : Begging, Qabisah, is allowable only to one of three classes: a man who has become a guarantor for a payment to whom begging is allowed till he gets it, after which he must stop (begging); a man who has been stricken by a calamity and it destroys his property to whom begging is allowed till he gets what will support life (or he said, what will provide a reasonable subsistence); and a man who has been smitten by poverty, about whom three intelligent members of his people confirm by saying: So and so has been smitten by poverty, to such a person begging is allowed till be gets what will support life (or he said, what will provide a reasonable subsistence), after which he must stop (begging). Any other reason for begging, Qabisah, is forbidden, and one who engages in such consumes it as a thing which is forbidden.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 9, Hadith 85
What do you think if a man divorces his wife while she is menstruating? He said: Abdullah ibn Umar divorced his wife while she was menstruating during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).So Umar asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: Abdullah ibn Umar divorced his wife while she was menstruating. Abdullah said: He returned her to me and did not count it (the pronouncement) anything. He said: When she is purified, he may divorce her or keep her with him. Ibn Umar said: The Prophet (ﷺ) recited the Qur'anic verse: O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them in the beginning of their waiting period."
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by Yunus b. Jubair, Anas b. Sirin b. Jubair, Zaid b. Aslam, Abu al-Zubair and Mansur from Abu Wa'il on the authority of Ibn 'Umar. They all agreed on the theme that the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded him to take her back (and keep her) till she was purified. Then if he desired, he might divorce her or keep her with him if he wanted to do so. The version narrated by al-Zuhri from Salim from Nafi' on the authority of Ibn 'Umar has: The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded him to take her back (and keep her) till she is purified, and then has menstrual discharge, and then she is purified. Then if he desires, he may divorce her and if he desires he may keep her.
Abu Dawud said: A version like that of Nafi' and al-Zuhri has also been transmitted by 'Ata al-Khurasani from al-Hasan on the authority of Ibn 'Umar. All the versions of this tradition contradict the one narrated by Abu al-Zubair.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 13, Hadith 11
We have nothing except the Book of Allah and this written paper from the Prophet (wherein is
written:) Medina is a sanctuary from the 'Air Mountain to such and such a place, and whoever
innovates in it an heresy or commits a sin, or gives shelter to such an innovator in it will incur the
curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people, none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of
worship will be accepted. And the asylum (of protection) granted by any Muslim is to be secured
(respected) by all the other Muslims; and whoever betrays a Muslim in this respect incurs the curse of
Allah, the angels, and all the people, and none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of worship
will be accepted, and whoever (freed slave) befriends (take as masters) other than his manumitters
without their permission incurs the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people, and none of his
compulsory or optional good deeds of worship will be accepted.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 29, Hadith 4
“I witnessed Ali having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ (Bismillāh) . So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Al-ḥamdulillāh) then he said: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subḥān alladhī sakh-khara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn. Wa innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn). Then he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah (Al-ḥamdulillāh)’ – three times – and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allāhu Akbar)’ – three times – ‘Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You (Subḥānaka innī qad ẓalamtu nafsī faghfirlī fa-innahū lā yaghfirudh-dhunūba illā ant).’ Then he laughed. So I said: ‘O Commander of the Believer! What caused you to laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he (ﷺ) laughed, so I said, ‘What cause you to laugh?’ He said: ‘Indeed, your Lord is very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.”
