“The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ)
gathered together and not one of them lagged behind. Fatimah came,
and
her gait was like that of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said,
‘Welcome to my daughter.’ Then he made her sit to his left, and
he
whispered something to her, and she smiled. I said to her: ‘What
made
you weep?’ She said: ‘I will not disclose the secret of the
Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ).’ I said: ‘I never saw joy so close to
grief as I saw
today.’ When she wept I said: ‘Did the Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ) tell
you some special words that were not for us, then
you wept?’ And I
asked her about what he had said. She said: ‘I
will not disclose the
secret of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’
After he died I asked her
what he had said, and she said: ‘He told
me that Jibra’il used to
review the Quran with him once each
year, but he had reviewed it with
him twice that year, (and he said:)
“I do not think but that my time
is near. You will be the first of
my family to join me, and what a
good predecessor I am for you.” So
I wept. Then he whispered to me and
said: “Will you not be pleased
to be the leader of the women of this
Ummah?” So I smiled.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 6, Hadith 189
I never saw anyone more like the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in respect of gravity, calm deportment, pleasant disposition - according to al-Hasan's version: in respect of talk and speech. Al-Hasan did not mention gravity, calm deportment, pleasant disposition - than Fatimah, may Allah honour her face. When she came to visit him (the Prophet) he got up to (welcome) her, took her by the hand, kissed her and made her sit where he was sitting; and when he went to visit her, she got up to (welcome) him, took him by the hand, kissed him, and made him sit where she was sitting.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 43, Hadith 445
I entered the mosque when 'Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As was sitting in the shade of the Ka'ba and the people had gathered around him. I betook myself to them and sat near him. (Now) Abdullah said: I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a journey. We halted at a place. Some of us began to set right their tents, others began to compete with one another in shooting, and others began to graze their beasts, when an announcer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) announced that the people should gather together for prayer, so we gathered around the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: It was the duty of every Prophet that has gone before me to guide his followers to what he knew was good for them and warn them against what he knew was bad for them; but this Umma of yours has its days of peace and (security) in the beginning of its career, and in the last phase of its existence it will be afflicted with trials and with things disagreeable to you. (In this phase of the Umma), there will be tremendous trials one after the other, each making the previous one dwindle into insignificance. When they would be afflicted with a trial, the believer would say: This is going to bring about my destruction. When at (the trial) is over, they would be afflicted with another trial, and the believer would say: This surely is going to be my end. Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allah and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated by them. He who swears allegiance to a Caliph should give him the piedge of his hand and the sincerity of his heart (i. e. submit to him both outwardly as well as inwardly). He should obey him to the best of his capacity. It another man comes forward (as a claimant to Caliphate), disputing his authority, they (the Muslims) should behead the latter. The narrator says: I came close to him ('Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As) and said to him: Can you say on oath that you heard it from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? He pointed with his hands to his ears and his heart and said: My ears heard it and my mind retained it. I said to him: This cousin of yours, Mu'awiya, orders us to unjustly consume our wealth among ourselves and to kill one another, while Allah says:" O ye who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves unjustly, unless it be trade based on mutual agreement, and do not kill yourselves. Verily, God is Merciful to you" (iv. 29). The narrator says that (hearing this) Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-As kept quiet for a while and then said: Obey him in so far as he is obedient to God; and diqobey him in matters involving disobedience to God.
Sahih Muslim Book 33, Hadith 74
Once I went (from Medina) towards (Al-Ghaba) before the first Adhan of the Fajr Prayer. The shecamels
of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to graze at a place called Dhi-Qarad. A slave of `Abdur-Rahman bin
`Auf met me (on the way) and said, "The she-camels of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had been taken away by
force." I asked, "Who had taken them?" He replied "(The people of) Ghatafan." I made three loud
cries (to the people of Medina) saying, "O Sabahah!" I made the people between the two mountains of
Medina hear me. Then I rushed onward and caught up with the robbers while they were watering the
camels. I started throwing arrows at them as I was a good archer and I was saying, "I am the son of
Al-Akwa`, and today will perish the wicked people." I kept on saying like that till I restored the shecamels
(of the Prophet), I also snatched thirty Burda (i.e. garments) from them. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) and
the other people came there, and I said, "O Allah's Prophet! I have stopped the people (of Ghatafan)
from taking water and they are thirsty now. So send (some people) after them now." On that the
Prophet said, "O the son of Al-Akwa`! You have over-powered them, so forgive them." Then we all
came back and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) seated me behind him on his she-camel till we entered Medina.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 234
Yahya related to me from Malik that Zurayq ibn Hakim informed him
that he had a runaway slave who had stolen. He said, "The situation
was obscure for me, so I wrote to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz to ask him
about it. He was the governor at that time. I informed him that I had
heard that if a runaway slave stole while he was a fugitive, his hand
was not cut off. 'Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wrote to contradict my letter,
'You wrote to me that you have heard that when the runaway slave
steals, his hand is not cut off. Allah, the Blessed, the Exalted, says
in His Book, 'The thief, male and female, cut off the hands of both,
as a recompense for what they have earned, and an exemplary punishment
from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise.' (Sura 5 ayat 41) When his theft
reaches a quarter of a dinar, and upwards, his hand is cut off.' "
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that al-
Qasim ibn Muhammad and Salim ibn Abdullah and Urwa ibn az-Zubayr said,
"When a runaway slave steals something for which cutting off the hand
is obliged, his hand is cut off."
Malik said, "The way of
doing things amongst us about which there is no dispute is that when
the runaway slave steals that for which cutting off the hand is
obliged, his hand is cut off."
Muwatta Malik Book 41, Hadith 29
Yahya related to me from Malik that Humayd ibn Qays al-Makki
said, "A man came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, with the two sons of Jafar ibn Abi Talib. He said to
their nursemaid, 'Why do I see them so thin?' Their nursemaid said,
'Messenger of Allah, the evil eye goes quickly to them. Nothing stops
us from asking someone to make incantations (using ayats of Quran)
for them, except that we do not know what of that would agree with
you.' The Messenger of ,Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, 'Make incantations for them. Had anything been able to
precede the decree, the evil eye would precede it.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 50, Hadith 3
'A'isha, have you anything (to eat)? I said: 'Messenger of Allah, there is nothing with us. Thereupon he said: I am observing fast. She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out, and there was a present, for us and (at the same time) some visitors dropped in. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came back, I said to him: Messenger of Allah, a present was given to us, (and in the meanwhile) there came to us visitors (a major Portion of it has been spent on them), but I have saved something for you. He said: What is it? I said: It is hais (a compound of dates and clarified butter). He said: Bring that. So I brought it to him and he ate it and then said: I woke up in the morning observing fast. Talha said: I narrated this hadith to Mujahid and he said: This (observing of voluntary fast) is like a person who sets apart Sadaqa out of his wealth. He may spend it if he likes, or he may retain it if he so likes.
