Yahya related to me from Malik from a man of Kufa that Umar ibn
al-Khattab wrote to a lieutenant of an army which he had sent out, "I
have heard that it is the habit of some of your men to chase an
unbeliever till he takes refuge in a high place. Then one man tells
him in Persian not to be afraid, and when he comes up to him, he kills
him. By He in whose hand my self is, if I knew someone who had done
that, I would strike off his head."
Yahya said, I heard Malik
say, "This tradition is not unanimously agreed upon, so one does not
act on it."
Malik when asked whether safe conduct promised by
gesture had the same status as that promised by speech, said, "Yes. I
think that one can request an army not to kill someone by gesturing
for safe conduct, because as far as I am concerned, gesture has the
same status as speech. I have heard that Abdullah ibn Abbas said,
'There is no people who betray a pledge, but that Allah gives their
enemies power over them.' "
Muwatta Malik Book 21, Hadith 12
A woman of her family had sent her a small vessel of honey as a gift, and she gave to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) from that a drink. I said: By Allah, we would also contrive a device for him. I mentioned that to Sauda, and said: When he (Allah's Apostle) would visit you and draw close to you, say to him: Allah's Messenger, have you taken maghafir? And he would'say to you: No. Then say to him: What is this odour? And Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) felt it very much that unpleasant odour should emit from him. So he would say to you: Hafsa has given me a drink of honey. Then you should say to him: The honey-bees might have sucked 'Urfut, and I would also say the same to him and. Safiyya, you should also say this. So when he (the Holy Prophet) came to Sauda, she said: By Him besides whom there is no god, it was under compulsion that I had decided to state that which you told me when he would be at a little distance at the door. So when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came near, she said: Messenger of Allah, did you eat Maghafir? He said: No. She (again) said: Then what is this odour? He said: Hafsa gave me honey to drink. She said: The honey-bee might have sucked 'Urfut. When he came to me I told him like this. He then visited Safiyya and she also said to him like this. When he (again) visited Hafsa, she said: Messenger of Allah, should I not give you that (drink)? He said: I do not need that. Sauda said: Hallowed be Allah, by Him we have (contrived) to make that (honey) unlawful for him. I said to her: Keep quiet.
Sahih Muslim Book 18, Hadith 28
Aisha said that whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to go on a journey, he drew lots among his wives (so as
to take one of them along with him). During one of his journeys the lot fell on `Aisha and Hafsa.
When night fell the Prophet (ﷺ) would ride beside `Aisha and talk with her. One night Hafsa said to
`Aisha, "Won't you ride my camel tonight and I ride yours, so that you may see (me) and I see (you)
(in new situation)?" `Aisha said, "Yes, (I agree.)" So `Aisha rode, and then the Prophet (ﷺ) came towards
`Aisha's camel on which Hafsa was riding. He greeted Hafsa and then proceeded (beside her) till they
dismounted (on the way). `Aisha missed him, and so, when they dismounted, she put her legs in the
Idhkhir and said, "O Lord (Allah)! Send a scorpion or a snake to bite me for I am not to blame him
(the Prophet (ﷺ) ).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 144
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever says at the end of every Fajr prayer, while his feet are still folded, before speaking: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him is the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is powerful over all things, (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa yumītu, wa huwa `alā kulli shay’in qadīr)’ ten times, then ten good deeds shall be written for him, ten evil deeds shall be wiped away from him, ten degrees shall be raised up for him, and he shall be in security all that day from every disliked thing, and he shall be in protection from Shaitan, and no sin will meet him or destroy him that day, except for associating partners with Allah.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 48, Hadith 105
"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What is wrong with us that when we are with you our hearts are softened and we feel free of desire for this world, and we are of the people of the Hereafter. But when we depart from you and socialize with our families and our children, we do not recognize ourselves(i.e., we are changed persons)?' So the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: 'If you were to be in that condition when you depart from me, the angels would have surely visited you in your houses. And if you did not sin, Allah would surely have brought anew creation that they may sin, so that then He may forgive them.'"He said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! From what was the creation created?' He said: 'From water.' We said: 'Paradise, what is it constructed of?' He said,'Bricks of silver and bricks of gold. Its mortar is musk of a strong fragrance, and its pebbles are pearls and rubies, and its earth is saffron. Whoever enters it shall live and shall not suffer, and shall feel joy and shall not die, nor shall their clothes wear out, nor shall their youth come to an end.' Then he said: 'Three persons , their supplication is not rejected: The just ruler, the fasting person when he breaks his fast, and the supplication of the wronged person. It is raised up above the clouds, and the gates of Heaven are opened up for it, and the Lord, Blessed and Exalted says: I shall surely come to your aid, even if after a time.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 38, Hadith 4
By Allah except Whom none has the right to- be worshipped, (sometimes) I used to lay (sleep) on the
ground on my liver (abdomen) because of hunger, and (sometimes) I used to bind a stone over my
belly because of hunger. One day I sat by the way from where they (the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions)
used to come out. When Abu Bakr passed by, I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book and I
asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by and did not do so. Then `Umar
passed by me and I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book, and I asked him only that he might
satisfy my hunger, but he passed by without doing so. Finally Abu-l-Qasim (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) passed by
me and he smiled when he saw me, for he knew what was in my heart and on my face. He said, "O
Aba Hirr (Abu Huraira)!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said to me, "Follow me." He left
and I followed him.
Then he entered the house and I asked permission to enter and was admitted. He found milk in a bowl
and said, "From where is this milk?" They said, "It has been presented to you by such-and-such man
(or by such and such woman)." He said, "O Aba Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said,
"Go and call the people of Suffa to me." These people of Suffa were the guests of Islam who had no
families, nor money, nor anybody to depend upon, and whenever an object of charity was brought to
the Prophet, he would send it to them and would not take anything from it, and whenever any present
was given to him, he used to send some for them and take some of it for himself. The order of the
Prophet upset me, and I said to myself, "How will this little milk be enough for the people of As-
Suffa? though I was more entitled to drink from that milk in order to strengthen myself", but behold!
The Prophet (ﷺ) came to order me to give that milk to them. I wondered what will remain of that milk for
me, but anyway, I could not but obey Allah and His Apostle so I went to the people of As-Suffa and
called them, and they came and asked the Prophet's permission to enter. They were admitted and took
their seats in the house.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Aba-Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "Take it and give it to
them." So I took the bowl (of milk) and started giving it to one man who would drink his fill and
return it to me, whereupon I would give it to another man who, in his turn, would drink his fill and
return it to me, and I would then offer it to another man who would drink his fill and return it to me.
Finally, after the whole group had drunk their fill, I reached the Prophet (ﷺ) who took the bowl and put it
on his hand, looked at me and smiled and said. "O Aba Hirr!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!"
He said, "There remain you and I." I said, "You have said the truth, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "Sit
down and drink." I sat down and drank. He said, "Drink," and I drank. He kept on telling me
repeatedly to drink, till I said, "No. by Allah Who sent you with the Truth, I have no space for it (in
my stomach)." He said, "Hand it over to me." When I gave him the bowl, he praised Allah and
pronounced Allah's Name on it and drank the remaining milk.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 81, Hadith 41
Malik related to me that he heard that Urwa ibn az-Zubayr and
Sulayman ibn Yasar when asked whether the sons of a man, who had a
kitaba written for himself and his children and then died, worked for
the kitaba of their father or were slaves, said, "They work for the
kitaba of their father and they have no reduction at all for the death
of their father."
Malik said, "If they are small and unable
to work, one does not wait for them to grow up and they are slaves of
their father's master unless the mukatab has left what will pay their
instalments for them until they can work. If there is enough to pay
for them in what he has left, that is paid for on their behalf and
they are left in their condition until they can work, and then if they
pay, they are free. If they cannot do it, they are slaves."
Malik spoke about a mukatab who died and left property which was not
enough to pay his kitaba, and he also left a child with him in his
kitaba and an umm walad, and the umm walad wanted to work for them. He
said, "The money is paid to her if she is trustworthy with it and
strong enough to work. If she is not strong enough to work and not
trustworthy with property, she is not given any of it and she and the
children of the mukatab revert to being slaves of the master of the
mukatab."
Malik said, "If people are written together in one
kitaba and there is no kinship between them, and some of them are
incapable and others work until they are all set free, those who
worked can claim from those who were unable, the portion of what they
paid for them because some of them assumed the responsibility for
others."
Muwatta Malik Book 39, Hadith 8
Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab that Abu Umama ibn Sahl ibn
Hunayf said, ''Amir ibn Rabia saw Sahl ibn Hunayf doing a ghusl and
said, 'I have not seen the like of what I see today, not even the skin
of a maiden who has never been out of doors.' Sahl fell to the ground.
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was
approached and it was said, 'Messenger of Allah, can you do anything
about Sahl ibn Hunayf? By Allah, he can not raise his head.' He said,
'Do you suspect anyone of it?' They said, 'We suspect Amir ibn Rabia.'
"
He continued, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, summoned Amir and was furious with him and said,
'Why does one of you kill his brother? Why did you not say, "May Allah
bless you?" Do ghusl for it.' Amir washed his face, hands, elbows,
knees, the end of his feet, and inside his lower garment in a vessel.
Then he poured it over him, and Sahl went off with the people, and
there was nothing wrong with him."
Muwatta Malik Book 50, Hadith 2
"We witnessed the fear prayer with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). We stood behind him in two rows, and the enemy was between us and the Qiblah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said the takbir. He bowed and we bowed, and he stood up again and we stood up. When he went down in prostration, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and those who were closest to him prostrated, and the second row remained standing until the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the row closest to him stood up. Then the second row prostrated when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had stood up, where they were. Then the row that had been closest to the Prophet (ﷺ) moved back and the second row moved forward, each standing in the place where the other had been. The Prophet (ﷺ) bowed and we bowed, then he stood up and we stood up, and when he went down in prostration, those who were closest to him prostrated and the others remained standing. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and those who were closest to him sat up, the others prostrated, then he said the taslim."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 18, Hadith 19
Abu `Abdur-Rahman who was one of the supporters of `Uthman said to Abu Talha who was one of
the supporters of `Ali, "I perfectly know what encouraged your leader (i.e. `Ali) to shed blood. I heard
him saying: Once the Prophet (ﷺ) sent me and Az-Zubair saying, 'Proceed to such-and-such Ar-Roudah
(place) where you will find a lady whom Hatib has given a letter. So when we arrived at Ar-Roudah,
we requested the lady to hand over the letter to us. She said, 'Hatib has not given me any letter.' We
said to her. 'Take out the letter or else we will strip off your clothes.' So she took it out of her braid. So
the Prophet (ﷺ) sent for Hatib, (who came) and said, 'Don't hurry in judging me, for, by Allah, I have not
become a disbeliever, and my love to Islam is increasing. (The reason for writing this letter was) that
there is none of your companions but has relatives in Mecca who look after their families and
property, while I have nobody there, so I wanted to do them some favor (so that they might look after
my family and property).' The Prophet (ﷺ) believed him. `Umar said, 'Allow me to chop off his (i.e.
Hatib's) neck as he has done hypocrisy.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, (to `Umar), 'Who knows, perhaps Allah has
looked at the warriors of Badr and said (to them), 'Do whatever you like, for I have forgiven you.' "
`Abdur-Rahman added, "So this is what encouraged him (i.e. `Ali).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 56, Hadith 285
That he differed with Al-Hurr bin Qais bin Hisn Al-Fazari about the companion of Moses, (i.e.,
whether he was Kha,dir or not). Ubai bin Ka`b Al-Ansari passed by them and Ibn `Abbas called him
saying, 'My friend (Hur) and I have differed about Moses' Companion whom Moses asked the way to
meet. Did you hear Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) mentioning anything about him?" Ubai said, "Yes, I heard Allah's
Apostle saying, "While Moses was sitting in the company of some Israelites a man came to him and
asked, 'Do you know Someone who is more learned than you (Moses)?' Moses said, 'No.' So Allah
sent the Divine inspiration to Moses:--
'Yes, Our Slave Khadir is more learned than you' Moses asked Allah how to meet him ( Khadir) So
Allah made the fish as a sign for him and it was said to him, 'When you lose the fish, go back (to the
place where you lose it) and you will meet him.' So Moses went on looking for the sign of the fish in
the sea. The boy servant of Moses (who was accompanying him) said to him, 'Do you remember
(what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock? I did indeed forget to tell you (about) the fish.
None but Satan made me forget to tell you about it' (18.63) Moses said:
'That is what we have been seeking." Sa they went back retracing their footsteps. (18.64). So they both
found Kadir (there) and then happened what Allah mentioned about them (in the Qur'an)!' (See 18.60-
82)
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 97, Hadith 104
Messenger of Allah. Allah is not ashamed of truth what do you think, if a woman sees what a man sees in dream, should she take a bath or not? The prophet (ﷺ) replied: Yes, she should take a bath if she finds the liquid (vaginal secretion) ‘A’ishah said : Then I came upon her and said her : Woe to you! Does a woman see that (sexual dream)? In the meantime, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came upon me and said: May your right hand be covered with dust! How can there be the resemblance (i.e., between the child and the mother)?
Abu Dawud said: A similar version has been narrated by Zubaid, ‘Uqail, Yunus, cousin of Al-Zuhri, Ibn Abi-Wazir, on the authority of al-Zuhr, musan, al-Hajabi, like al-Zuhri, narrated on the authority of ‘Urwah from ‘A’ishah, but Hisham b. ‘Urwah narrated from ‘Urwah on the authority of Zainab daughter of Abu Salamah from Umm Salamah saying. Umm Sulaim came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 1, Hadith 237
The sun eclipsed in the lifetime of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) . Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) offered the eclipse prayer
and stood for a long period equal to the period in which one could recite Surat-al-Baqara. Then he
bowed for a long time and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first
standing, then bowed again for a long time but for a shorter period than the first; then he prostrated
twice and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing; then he
bowed for a long time which was shorter than the previous one, and then he raised his head and stood
up for a long period which was shorter than the first standing, then he bowed for a long time which
was shorter than the first bowing, and then prostrated (twice) and finished the prayer. By then, the sun
(eclipse) had cleared. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah.
They eclipse neither because of the death of somebody nor because of his life (i.e. birth). So when you
see them, remember Allah." The people say, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! We saw you taking something from
your place and then we saw you retreating." The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my
hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the
world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of
the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Why is it so?" The Prophet (ﷺ)
replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The
Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good
deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable)
in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 16, Hadith 12
We went out in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on the day of (the battle of) Khaibar, and we did not
get any gold or silver as war booty, but we got property in the form of things and clothes. Then a man
called Rifa`a bin Zaid, from the tribe of Bani Ad-Dubaib, presented a slave named Mid`am to Allah's
Apostle. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) headed towards the valley of Al-Qura, and when he was in the valley of Al-
Qura an arrow was thrown by an unidentified person, struck and killed Mid`am who was making a
she-camel of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) kneel down. The people said, "Congratulations to him (the slave) for
gaining Paradise." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No! By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, for the sheet which
he stole from the war booty before its distribution on the day of Khaibar, is now burning over him."
When the people heard that, a man brought one or two Shiraks (leather straps of shoes) to the Prophet.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A Shirak of fire, or two Shiraks of fire."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 83, Hadith 84
A man came to Sahl bin Sa`d and said, "This is so-and-so," meaning the Governor of Medina, "He is
calling `Ali bad names near the pulpit." Sahl asked, "What is he saying?" He (i.e. the man) replied,
"He calls him (i.e. `Ali) Abu Turab." Sahl laughed and said, "By Allah, none but the Prophet (ﷺ) called
him by this name and no name was dearer to `Ali than this." So I asked Sahl to tell me more, saying,
"O Abu `Abbas! How (was this name given to `Ali)?" Sahl said, "`Ali went to Fatima and then came
out and slept in the Mosque. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Fatima, "Where is your cousin?" She said, "In the
Mosque." The Prophet (ﷺ) went to him and found that his (i.e. `Ali's) covering sheet had slipped of his
back and dust had soiled his back. The Prophet (ﷺ) started wiping the dust off his back and said twice,
"Get up! O Abu Turab (i.e. O. man with the dust).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 62, Hadith 53
That his father was martyred on the day of the battle of Uhud and was in debt and left six (orphan)
daughters. Jabir, added, "When the season of plucking the dates came, I went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and
said, "You know that my father was martyred on the day of Uhud, and he was heavily in debt, and I
would like that the creditors should see you." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Go and pile every kind of dates
apart." I did so and called him (i.e. the Prophet (ﷺ) ). When the creditors saw him, they started claiming
their debts from me then in such a harsh manner (as they had never done before). So when he saw
their attitude, he went round the biggest heap of dates thrice, and then sat over it and said, 'O Jabir),
call your companions (i.e. the creditors).' Then he kept on measuring (and giving) to the creditors
(their due) till Allah paid all the debt of my father. I would have been satisfied to retain nothing of
those dates for my sisters after Allah had paid the debts of my father. But Allah saved all the heaps (of
dates), so that when I looked at the heap where the Prophet (ﷺ) had been sitting, it seemed as if a single
date had not been taken away thereof."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 99
