"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What is wrong with us that when we are with you our hearts are softened and we feel free of desire for this world, and we are of the people of the Hereafter. But when we depart from you and socialize with our families and our children, we do not recognize ourselves(i.e., we are changed persons)?' So the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: 'If you were to be in that condition when you depart from me, the angels would have surely visited you in your houses. And if you did not sin, Allah would surely have brought anew creation that they may sin, so that then He may forgive them.'"He said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! From what was the creation created?' He said: 'From water.' We said: 'Paradise, what is it constructed of?' He said,'Bricks of silver and bricks of gold. Its mortar is musk of a strong fragrance, and its pebbles are pearls and rubies, and its earth is saffron. Whoever enters it shall live and shall not suffer, and shall feel joy and shall not die, nor shall their clothes wear out, nor shall their youth come to an end.' Then he said: 'Three persons , their supplication is not rejected: The just ruler, the fasting person when he breaks his fast, and the supplication of the wronged person. It is raised up above the clouds, and the gates of Heaven are opened up for it, and the Lord, Blessed and Exalted says: I shall surely come to your aid, even if after a time.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 38, Hadith 4
The Prophet said concerning the urine of a nursing infant: "Water should be sprinkled over the urine of a boy, and the urine of a girl should be washed."
Abul-Hasan bin Salamah said: "Ahmad bin Musa bin Ma'qil narrated to us that Abul-Yaman Al-Misri said: 'I asked Shafi'i about the Hadith of the Prophet, "Water should be sprinkled over the urine of a baby boy, and the urine of a baby girl should be washed," when the two types of water (urine) are the same. He said, "This is because the urine of the boy is of water and clay, but the urine of the girl is of flesh and blood." Then he said to me: "Did you understand?" I said: "No." He said: "When Allah the Most High created Adam, He created Eve (Hawwa') from his short rib, so the boy's urine is from water and clay, and the girl's urine is from flesh and blood." Then he said to me: "Did you understand?" I said: "Yes." He said: "May Allah cause you benefit from this."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 1, Hadith 259
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Time has taken its original shape which it had when Allah created the Heavens and
the Earth. The year is of twelve months, four of which are sacred, and out of these (four) three are in
succession, i.e. Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab which is named
after the Mudar tribe, between (the month of) Jumaida (ath-thania) and Sha'ban." Then the Prophet (ﷺ)
asked, "Which is this month?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that the Prophet (ﷺ)
kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." Then he said, "Which town is this?" "We
replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that he kept quiet so long that we thought that he
might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the town of Mecca?" We replied, "Yes, "
Then he said, "Which day is today?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept quiet
so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the day of An-
Nahr (i.e. sacrifice)?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "So your blood, your properties, (The sub-narrator
Muhammad said, 'I think the Prophet (ﷺ) also said: And your honor..) are sacred to one another like the
sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours; and surely, you will meet
your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not become infidels after me, cutting
the throats of one another. It is incumbent on those who are present to convey this message (of mine)
to those who are absent. May be that some of those to whom it will be conveyed will understand it
better than those who have actually heard it." (The sub-narrator, Muhammad, on remembering that
narration, used to say, "Muhammad spoke the truth!") He (i.e. Prophet) then added twice, "No doubt!
Haven't I conveyed (Allah's Message) to you?"
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 64, Hadith 428
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his
father that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, said, "There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, led
the people in prayer. He stood, and did so for a long time. Then he
went into ruku, and made the ruku long. Then he stood again, and did
so for a long time, though not as long as the first time. Then he went
into ruku, and made the ruku long, though not as long as thefirst
time. Then he rose, and went down into sajda. He then did the same in
the second raka, and by the time he had finished the sun had appeared.
He then gave a khutba to the people, in which he praised Allah and
then said, 'The sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs. They do not
eclipse for anyone's death nor for anyone's life. When you see an
eclipse, call on Allah and say, "Allah is greater" and give sadaqa.'
Then he said, 'O community of Muhammad! ByAllah, there is no-one more
jealous than Allah of a male or female slave of his who commits
adultery. O community of Muhammad! By Allah, if you knew what I knew,
you would laugh little and weep much'."
Muwatta Malik Book 12, Hadith 1
"Abdul Malik bin Marwan wrote to Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf telling him not to go against Ibn Umar with regard to the Hajj. On the day of Arafat, Ibn Umar came to him when the sun had passed its zenith, and I was with him, and shouted near his cotton tent: 'Where is he?' Al-Hajjaj came out to him, wearing a wrap dyed with safflower. He said: 'What is the matter, O Abu Abdur Rahman?' He said: 'We have to move on if you want to follow Sunnah.' He said to him: 'At this hour?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I will pour some water over my self (have a bath) then I will come out to you.' So he waited until he came, then he walked between my father and me, I said: 'If you want to follow the Sunnah, then deliver a short Khutbah and hasten to stand (in Arafat).' He started to look at Ibn Umar so that he could hear that, and when Ibn Umar noticed that he said: 'He is speaking the truth.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 24, Hadith 388
“A Bedouin came to the Prophet (ﷺ) to ask him to pay back a debt that he owed him, and he spoke harshly, saying: 'I will make things difficult for you unless you repay me.' His Companions rebuked him and said: 'Woe to you, do you know who you are speaking to?' He said: 'I am only asking for my rights.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Why do you not support the one who has a right?' Then he sent word to Khawlah bint Qais, saying to her: 'If you have dates, lend them to us until our dates come, then we will pay you back.' She said: 'Yes, may my father be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)!' So she gave him a loan, and he paid back the Bedouin and fed him. He (the Bedouin) said: 'You have paid me in full, may Allah (SWT) pay you in full.' He (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) said: 'Those are the best of people. May that nation not be cleansed (of sin) among whom the weak cannot get their rights without trouble.' ”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 15, Hadith 37
Malik spoke about a mudabbar who said to his master, "Free me
immediately and I will give fifty dinars which I will have to pay in
instalments." His master said, "Yes. You are free and you must pay
fifty dinars, and you will pay me ten dinars every year." The slave
was satisfied with this. Then the master dies one, two or three days
after that. He said, "The freeing is confirmed and the fifty dinars
become a debt against him. His testimony is permitted, his
inviolability as a free man is confirmed, as are his inheritance and
his liability to the full hudud punishments. The death of his master,
however, does not reduce the debt for him at all."
Malik said
that if a man who made his slave a mudabbar died and he had some
property at hand and some absent property, and in the property at hand
there was not enough (in the third he was allowed to bequeath) to
cover the value of the mudabbar, the mudabbar was kept there together
with this property, and his tax (kharaj) was gathered until the
master's absent property was clear. Then if a third of what his master
left would cover his value, he was freed with his property and what
had gathered of his tax. If there was not enough to cover his value in
what his master had left, as much of him was freed as the third would
allow, and his property was left in his hands.
Muwatta Malik Book 40, Hadith 2
When we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he was distributing the spoils of war, there came to him Dhul-Khuwasira, one of Banu Tamim. He said: Messenger of Allah, do justice. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Woe be upon thee! Who would do justice, if I do not do justice? You would be unsuccessful and incurring a loss, if I do not do justice. Upon this Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) said: Messenger of Allah, permit me to strike off his neck. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Leave him, for he has friends (who would outwardly look to be so religious and pious) that everyone among you would consider his prayer insignificant as compared with their prayer, and his fast as compared with their fasts. They would recite the Qur'an but it would not go beyond their collar-bones. They would pass through (the teachings of Islam so hurriedly) just as the arrow passes through the prey. He would look at its Iron head, but would not find anything ticking) there. He would then see at the lowest end, but would not find anything sticking there. He would then see at its grip but would not find anything sticking to it. He would then see at its feathers and he would find nothing sticking to them (as the arrow would pass so quickly that nothing would stick to it) neither excrement nor blood. They would be recognised by the presence of a black man among them whose upper arms would be like a woman's breast, or like a piece of meat as it quivers, and they would come forth at the time when there is dissension among the people. Abu Sai'd said: I testify to the fact that I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and I testify to the fact that 'Ali b. Abu Talib fought against them and I was with him. He gave orders about that man who was sought for, and when he was brought in, and when I looked at him, he was exactly as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had described him.
Sahih Muslim Book 12, Hadith 193
That Ubaidullah bin `Abdullah and Salim bin `Abdullah informed him that they told Ibn `Umar when
Ibn Az-Zubair was attacked by the army, saying "There is no harm for you if you did not perform Hajj
this year. We are afraid that you may be prevented from reaching the Ka`ba." Ibn `Umar said "We set
out with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and the non-believers of Quraish prevented us from reaching the Ka`ba, and
so the Prophet (ﷺ) slaughtered his Hadi and got his head shaved." Ibn `Umar added, "I make you
witnesses that I have made `Umra obligatory for me. And, Allah willing, I will go and then if the way
to Ka`ba is clear, I will perform the Tawaf, but if I am prevented from going to the Ka`ba then I will
do the same as the Prophet (ﷺ) did while I was in his company." Ibn `Umar then assumed Ihram for Umra
from Dhul-Hulaifa and proceeded for a while and said, "The conditions of `Umra and Hajj are similar
and I make you witnesses that I have made `Umra and Hajj obligatory for myself." So, he did not
finish the Ihram till the day of Nahr (slaughtering) came, and he slaughtered his Hadi. He used to say,
"I will not finish the Ihram till I perform the Tawaf, one Tawaf on the day of entering Mecca (i.e. of
Safa and Marwa for both `Umra and Hajj).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 27, Hadith 2
Allah's Messenger, I have wronged myself; I have committed adultery and I earnestly desire that you should purify me. He turned him away. On the following day, he (Ma'iz) again came to him and said: Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) turned him away for the second time, and sent him to his people saying: Do you know if there is anything wrong with his mind. They denied of any such thing in him and said: We do not know him but as a wise good man among us, so far as we can judge. He (Ma'iz) came for the third time, and he (the Holy Prophet) sent him as he had done before. He asked about him and they informed him that there was nothing wrong with him or with his mind. When it was the fourth time, a ditch was dug for him and he (the Holy Prophet) pronounced judg- ment about him and he wis stoned. He (the narrator) said: There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a woman from Ghamid and said: Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery, so purify me. He (the Holy Prophet) turned her away. On the following day she said: Allah's Messenger, Why do you turn me away? Perhaps, you turn me away as you turned away Ma'iz. By Allah, I have become pregnant. He said: Well, if you insist upon it, then go away until you give birth to (the child). When she was delivered she came with the child (wrapped) in a rag and said: Here is the child whom I have given birth to. He said: Go away and suckle him until you wean him. When she had weaned him, she came to him (the Holy Prophet) with the child who was holding a piece of bread in his hand. She said: Allah's Apostle, here is he as I have weaned him and he eats food. He (the Holy Prophet) entrusted the child to one of the Muslims and then pronounced punishment. And she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her. Khalid b Walid came forward with a stone which he flung at her head and there spurted blood on the face of Khalid and so he abused her. Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) heard his (Khalid's) curse that he had huried upon her. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Khalid, be gentle. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, he prayed over her and she was buried.
Sahih Muslim Book 29, Hadith 35
I was ten years old when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) arrived at Medina. My mother and aunts used to urge me to
serve the Prophet (ﷺ) regularly, and I served him for ten years. When the Prophet (ﷺ) died I was twenty years
old, and I knew about the order of Al-Hijab (veiling of ladies) more than any other person when it was
revealed. It was revealed for the first time when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had consummated his marriage with
Zainab bint Jahsh. When the day dawned, the Prophet (ﷺ) was a bridegroom and he invited the people to a
banquet, so they came, ate, and then all left except a few who remained with the Prophet (ﷺ) for a long
time. The Prophet (ﷺ) got up and went out, and I too went out with him so that those people might leave
too. The Prophet (ﷺ) proceeded and so did I, till he came to the threshold of `Aisha's dwelling place. Then
thinking that these people have left by then, he returned and so did I along with him till he entered
upon Zainab and behold, they were still sitting and had not gone. So the Prophet (ﷺ) again went away and
I went away along with him. When we reached the threshold of `Aisha's dwelling place, he thought
that they had left, and so he returned and I too, returned along with him and found those people had
left. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) drew a curtain between me and him, and the Verses of Al-Hijab were revealed.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 67, Hadith 101
I heard Hudhaifa saying, "While we were sitting with `Umar, he said, 'Who among you remembers the
statement of the Prophet (ﷺ) about the afflictions?' Hudhaifa said, "The affliction of a man in his family,
his property, his children and his neighbors are expiated by his prayers, Zakat (and alms) and
enjoining good and forbidding evil." `Umar said, "I do not ask you about these afflictions, but about
those afflictions which will move like the waves of the sea." Hudhaifa said, "Don't worry about it, O
chief of the believers, for there is a closed door between you and them." `Umar said, "Will that door
be broken or opened?" I said, "No. it will be broken." `Umar said, "Then it will never be closed," I
said, "Yes." We asked Hudhaifa, "Did `Umar know what that door meant?" He replied, "Yes, as I
know that there will be night before tomorrow morning, that is because I narrated to him a true
narration free from errors." We dared not ask Hudhaifa as to whom the door represented so we
ordered Masruq to ask him what does the door stand for? He replied, "`Umar."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 92, Hadith 47
I was sent to Aisha by Ibn `Abbas, Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and `Abdur-Rahman bin Azhar . They
told me to greet her on their behalf and to ask her about the offering of the two rak`at after the `Asr
prayer and to say to her, "We were informed that you offer those two rak`at and we were told that the
Prophet had forbidden offering them." Ibn `Abbas said, "I along with `Umar bin Al-Khattab used to
beat the people whenever they offered them." I went to Aisha and told her that message. `Aisha said,
"Go and ask Um Salama about them." So I returned and informed them about her statement. They
then told me to go to Um Salama with the same question with which t sent me to `Aisha. Um Salama
replied, "I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) forbidding them. Later I saw him offering them immediately after he
prayed the `Asr prayer. He then entered my house at a time when some of the Ansari women from the
tribe of Bani Haram were sitting with me, so I sent my slave girl to him having said to her, 'Stand
beside him and tell him that Um Salama says to you, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have heard you forbidding
the offering of these (two rak`at after the `Asr prayer) but I have seen you offering them." If he waves
his hand then wait for him.' The slave girl did that. The Prophet (ﷺ) beckoned her with his hand and she
waited for him. When he had finished the prayer he said, "O daughter of Bani Umaiya! You have
asked me about the two rak`at after the `Asr prayer. The people of the tribe of `Abdul-Qais came to
me and made me busy and I could not offer the two rak`at after the Zuhr prayer. These (two rak`at that
I have just prayed) are for those (missed) ones.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 22, Hadith 11
"I undertook a financial responsibility, then I came to the Prophet and asked him (for help) concerning that. He said: 'Hold on, o Qubaisah! When we get some charity we will give you some.' Then the Messenger of Allah said: 'O Qubaisah, charity is not permissible except for one of three: A man who undertakes a financial responsibility, so it is permissible for him to be given charity until he finds means to make him independent and to suffice him; a man who was stricken by calamity and his wealth was destroyed, so it is permissible for him to ask for help until he has enough to keep him going, them he should refrain from asking; and a man who is stricken with poverty and three wise men from among his own people testily that so-and-so is in desperate need, then it is permissible for him to ask for help until he finds means to make him independent and to suffice him. Asking for help in cases other than these, O Qubaisah, is unlawful, and the one who takes it is consuming it unlawfully."'
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 23, Hadith 146
The Prophet (ﷺ) asked: What is your name? He replied: Hazn (rugged). He said: You are Sahl (smooth). He said: No, smooth is trodden upon and disgraced. Sa'id said: I then thought that ruggedness would remain among us after it.
AbuDawud said: The Prophet (ﷺ) changed the names al-'As, Aziz, Atalah, Shaytan, al-Hakam, Ghurab, Hubab, and Shihab and called him Hisham. He changed the name Harb (war) and called him Silm (peace). He changed the name al-Munba'ith (one who lies) and called him al-Mudtaji' (one who stands up). He changed the name of a land Afrah (barren) and called it Khadrah (green). He changed the name Shi'b ad-Dalalah (the mountain path of a stray), the name of a mountain path and called it Shi'b al-Huda (mountain path of guidance). He changed the name Banu az-Zinyah (children of fornication) and called them Banu ar-Rushdah (children of those who are on the right path), and changed the name Banu Mughwiyah (children of a woman who allures and goes astray), and called them Banu Rushdah (children of a woman who is on the right path).
AbuDawud said: I omitted the chains of these for the sake of brevity.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 43, Hadith 184
"My paternal uncle was absent from the fighting of Badr, so he said: 'I was absent from the first fight the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fought with idolaters, so if Allah grants me to participate in a fight with the idolaters, then Allah will see what I will do!' So on the Day of Uhud, when the Muslims were driven back he said: 'O Allah! Indeed I am innocent before you of what these people - meaning the idolaters - have done, and I beg of You to excuse these people for what they have done - meaning the Companions. Then he went forward and met up with Sa'd. He said: 'O my brother! Whatever you do, I am with you!' But he was not able to do the same as him. He was found with more than eighty wounds, between blows with the sword, thrusts of a spear, or arrow wounds. We would say: 'It was about him and his companions that (the following) was revealed: 'Of them some have fulfilled their vow, and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed in the least (33:23). (One of the narrators) Yazid said: "Meaning this Ayah."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 47, Hadith 253
`Aisha said, "O my head!" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If that (i.e., your death) should happen while I am
still alive, I would ask Allah to forgive you and would invoke Allah for you." `Aisha said, "O my life
which is going to be lost! By Allah, I think that you wish for my death, and if that should happen then
you would be busy enjoying the company of one of your wives in the last part of that day." The
Prophet said, "But I should say, 'O my head!' I feel like calling Abu Bakr and his son and appoint (the
former as my successors lest people should say something or wish for something. Allah will insist (on
Abu Bakr becoming a Caliph) and the believers will prevent (anyone else from claiming the
Caliphate)," or "..Allah will prevent (anyone else from claiming the Caliphate) and the believers will
insist (on Abu Bakr becoming the Caliph).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 93, Hadith 77
"We went out with the Messenger of Allah on the Farewell pilgrimage, and they said : 'O Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ) celibacy has become too difficult for us'. He said : 'Then make temporary marriages with these women'. So we went to them, but they insisted on setting a fixed time between us and them. They mentioned that to the Prophet and he said : 'Set a fixed time between you and them.' So I went out with a cousin of mine. He had a cloak and I had a cloak, but his cloak was finer than mine, and I was younger than him. We came to a women and she said: 'One cloak is like another.' So I married her and stayed with her that night. Then the next day I saw the Messenger of Allah standing between the Rukn (corner) and the door (of the Ka'bah), saying : 'O people, I had permitted temporary marriage for you, but Allah has forbidden it until the Day of Resurrection. however had any temporary wives, he should let them go, and do not take back anything that you had given to them.' "
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 9, Hadith 118
