In the year of Hajjat-ul-Wada` the Prophet (ﷺ) visited me when I fell ill and was about to die because of
that illness. I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I am very ill as you see, and I am a rich man and have no heir
except my only daughter. Shall I give 2/3 of my property in charity?" He said, "No." I said, "Shall I
then give one half of it in charity?" He said, "O Sa`d! Give 1/3 (in charity) and even 1/3 is too much.
No doubt, it is better to leave your children rich than to leave them poor, reduced to begging from
others. And Allah will reward you for whatever you spend with the intention of gaining Allah's
Pleasure even if it were a mouthful of food you put into your wives mouth." I said, "O Allah's
Apostle! Am I to be left behind (in Mecca) after my companions have gone?" He said, "If you should
be left behind, you will be upgraded and elevated for every deed you will do with a desire to achieve
Allah's Pleasure. I hope that you will live long so that some people will benefit by you while others
will be harmed. O Allah! Please fulfill the migration of my companions and do not make them turn
back on their heels. But (we feel sorry for) the unlucky Sa`d bin Khaulah." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) lamented
his death in Mecca.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 63, Hadith 161
Malik related to me that Zayd ibn Aslam said, "Usury in the
Jahiliyya was that a man would give a loan to a man for a set term.
When the term was due, he would say, 'Will you pay it off or increase
me?' If the man paid, he took it. If not, he increased him in his debt
and lengthened the term for him ."
Malik said, "The
disapproved of way of doing things about which there is no dispute
among us, is that a man should give a loan to a man for a term, and
then the demander reduce it and the one from whom it is demanded pay
it in advance. To us that is like someone who delays repaying his debt
after it is due to his creditor and his creditor increases his debt."
Malik said, "This is nothing else but usury. No doubt about it."
Malik spoke about a man who loaned one hundred dinars to a man for
two terms. When it was due, the person who owed the debt said to him,
"Sell me some goods, whose price is one hundred dinars in cash for one
hundred and fifty on credit." Malik said, "This transaction is not
good, and the people of knowledge still forbid it."
Malik
said, "This is disapproved of because the creditor himself gives the
debtor the price of what the man sells him, and he defers repayment of
the hundred of the first transaction for the debtor for the term which
is mentioned to him in the second transaction, and the debtor
increases him with fifty dinars for his deferring him. That is
disapproved of and it is not good. It also resembles the hadith of
Zayd ibn Aslam about the transactions of the people of the Jahiliyya.
When their debts were due, they said to the person with the debt,
'Either you pay in full or you increase it.' If they paid, they took
it, and if not they increased debtors in their debts, and extended the
term for them."
Muwatta Malik Book 31, Hadith 84
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that he heard
Said ibn al-Musayyab asking a group of people, "What do you think
about someone who has intercourse with his wife while he is in ihram?"
and none of them answered him. Said said, "There is a man who has had
intercourse with his wife while in ihram who has sent a message to
Madina asking about it." Some of them said, "They should be kept apart
until a future year," and Said ibn al-Musayyab said, "They should
carry on and complete the hajj which they have spoiled, and then
return home when they have finished. If another hajj comes upon them,
they must do hajj and sacrifice an animal. They should go into ihram
at the same place where they went into ihram for the hajj that they
spoiled, and they should keep apart until they have finished their
hajj."
Malik said, "They should both sacrifice an animal."
Malik said, about a man who had intercourse with his wife
during hajj after he had come down from Arafa but before he had stoned
the Jamra, "He must sacrifice an animal and do hajj again in another
year. If, however, he had intercourse with his wife after he stoned
the Jamra, he only has to do an umra and sacrifice an animal and he
does not have to do another hajj."
Malik said, "What spoils a
hajj or an umra and makes sacrificing an animal and repeating the hajj
necessary is the meeting of the two circumcised parts, even if there
is no emission. It is also made necessary by an emission if it is the
result of bodily contact. I do not think that a man who remembers
something and has an emission owes anything, and if a man were to kiss
his wife and no emission were to occur from that, he would only have
to sacrifice an animal. A woman in ihram who has intercourse with her
husband several times during hajj or umra out of obedience to him only
has to do another hajj and sacrifice an animal. That is if her husband
has intercourse with her while she is doing hajj. If he has
intercourse with her while she is doing umra, she must repeat the umra
she has spoiled and sacrifice an animal."
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 164
"Gog and Magog people dig every day until, when they can
almost
see the rays of the sun, the one in charge of them says: "Go
back and
we will dig it tomorrow." Then Allah puts it back,
stronger than it
was before. (This will continue) until, when their
time has come, and
Allah wants to send them against the people, they
will dig until they
can almost see the rays of the sun, then the one
who is in charge of
them will say: "Go back, and we will dig it
tomorrow if Allah wills.'
So they will say: "If Allah wills."
Then they will come back to it and
it will be as they left it. So
they will dig and will come out to the
people, and they will drink
all the water. The people will fortify
themselves against them in
their fortresses. They will shoot their
arrows towards the sky and
they will come back with blood on them, and
they will say: "We
have defeated the people of earth and dominated the
people of
heaven." Then Allah will send a worm in the napes of their
necks
and will kill them thereby.'" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
said:
"By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, the beasts of the earth
will grow fat on their flesh."
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 155
'Ali b. Abi Talib (Allah be pleased with him) addressed us and said: He who thought that we have besides the Holy Qur'an anything else that we recite, he told a lie. And this document which is hanging by the sheath of the sword contains but the ages of the camels, and the nature of the wounds. He (Hadrat 'Ali) reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: Medina is sacred from 'Air to Thaur; So if anyone makes an innovation or accommodates an innovator, the curse of Allah, the angels, and all persons will fall upon him, and Allah will not accept any obligatory or supererogatory act as recompense from them. And the protection granted by the Muslims is one and must be respected by the humblest of them. If anyone makes a false claim to paternity, or being a client of other than his own masters, there is upon him the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people. Allah will not accept from him any recompense in the form of obligatory acts or supererogatory acts. The hadith transmitted on the authority of Abu Bakr and Zabair ends with (these words): The humblest among them should respect it; and what follows after it is not mentioned there, and in the hadith transmitted by them (these words are) not found: (The document was hanging) on the sheath of his sword.
Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 531
"We went out with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on one of his journeys, and when we were in Al-Baida' or Dhat Al-Jaish, a necklace of mine broke and fell. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stayed there looking for it and the people stayed with him. There was no water near them, and they did not have water with them. The people came to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'Do you see what 'Aishah has done? She has made the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the people stop and they are not near any water and they do not have water with them.' Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, came while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was resting his head on my thigh and had gone to sleep. He said: 'You have detained the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the people, and they are not near any water and they do not have any water with them.'"
'Aishah said: "Abu Bakr rebuked me and said whatever Allah willed he would say. He started poking me on my hip, and the only thing that prevented me from moving was the fact that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was resting on my thigh. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) slept until morning when he woke up without any water. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime revealed the verse of Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said: 'This is not the first time we have been blessed because of you, O family of Abu Bakr!'" She said: "Then we made the camel that I had been riding stand up, and we found the necklace beneath it."
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 1, Hadith 311
I asked Um Ruman, `Aisha's mother about the accusation forged against `Aisha. She said, "While I
was sitting with `Aisha, an Ansari woman came to us and said, 'Let Allah condemn such-and-such
person.' I asked her, 'Why do you say so?' She replied, 'For he has spread the (slanderous) story.'
`Aisha said, 'What story?' The woman then told her the story. `Aisha asked, 'Have Abu Bakr and
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) heard about it ?' She said, 'Yes.' `Aisha fell down senseless (on hearing that), and
when she came to her senses, she got fever and shaking of the body. The Prophet (ﷺ) came and asked,
'What is wrong with her?' I said, 'She has got fever because of a story which has been rumored.'
`Aisha got up and said, 'By Allah! Even if I took an oath, you would not believe me, and if I put
forward an excuse, You would not excuse me. My example and your example is just like that example
of Jacob and his sons. Against that which you assert, it is Allah (Alone) Whose Help can be sought.'
(12.18) The Prophet (ﷺ) left and then Allah revealed the Verses (concerning the matter), and on that
`Aisha said, 'Thanks to Allah (only) and not to anybody else."
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 60, Hadith 62
Malik related to me that he had heard that Said ibn al-Musayyab was asked who had the wala' of the children whom a slave had by a free woman. Said said, "If their father dies and he is a slave who was not set free, their wala' belongs to the mawali of their mother." Malik said, "That is like the child of a woman who is a mawla who has been divorced by lian; the child is attached to the mawali of his mother and they are his mawali. If he dies, they inherit from him. If he commits a crime, they pay the blood-money for him. If his father acknowledges him, he is given a kinship to him and his wala' goes to the mawali of his father. They are his heirs, they pay his blood-money and his father is punished with the hadd-punishment." Malik said, "It is like that with a free-born woman divorced by lian. If her husband who curses her by lian does not acknowledge her child, the child is dealt with in the same way except that the rest of his inheritance after the inheritance of his mother and his brothers from his mother goes to all the muslims as long as he was not given kinship to his father. The child of the lian is attached to the patronage of the mawali of his mother until his father acknowledges him because he does not have a lineage or paternal relations. If his lineage is confirmed, it goes to his paternal relations." Malik said, "The generally agreed-on way of doing things among us about a child of a slave by a free woman, while the father of the slave is free, is that the grandfather (the father of the slave), attracts the wala' of his son's free children by a free woman. They leave their inheritance to him as long as their father is a slave. If the father becomes free, the wala' returns to his mawali. If he dies and he is still a slave, the inheritance and the wala' go to the grandfather. If the slave has two free sons, and one of them dies while the father is still a slave, the grandfather, the father of the father, attracts the wala' and the inheritance." Malik spoke about a slave-girl who was set free while she was pregnant and her husband was a slave and then her husband became free before she gave birth, or after she gave birth. He said, "The wala' of what is in her womb goes to the person who set the mother free because slavery touched the child before the mother was set free. It is not treated in the same way as a child conceived by its mother after she has been set free because the wala' of such a child, is attracted by the father when he is set free." Malik said that if a slave asked his master's permission to free a slave of his and his master gave permission, the wala' of the freed slave went to the master of his master, and his wala' did not return to the master who had set him free, even if he were to become free himself."
Muwatta Malik Book 38, Hadith 24
If anyone observes a prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Qur’an, it is incomplete, it is incomplete, it is incomplete, and deficient. (The narrator said) I said: Abu Hurairah, sometime I pray behind the imam(then what should I do)? Pressing my hand he replied: O Persian, recite it inwardly, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying that Allah, Most High, has said: I have Me and the Half for my servant and My servant will receive what he asks. The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: Recite. When the servant says: “praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe,” Allah, Most High says: “My servant has praised me.” When the servant says: “ The Compassionate, the merciful, “Allah Most High says: “My servant has lauded me.” When the servant says: “Owner of the Day of Judgment,” Allah, Most High, says: “My servant has glorified Me” When the servant says: “ Thee do we worship and of thee we ask help. “ (Allah says) “This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks.” When the servant says: “ Guide us to the Straight Path, the path of those whom thou hast favoured, not ( the path) of those who earn thine anger nor of those who go astray,”(Allah says: ) “This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks.”
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 2, Hadith 431
I participated in a Ghazwa along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) The Prophet (ﷺ) met me (on the way) while I was
riding a camel of ours used for irrigation and it had got so tired that it could hardly walk. The Prophet (ﷺ)
asked me, "What is wrong with the camel?" I replied, "It has got tired." So. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came from
behind it and rebuked it and prayed for it so it started surpassing the other camels and going ahead of
them. Then he asked me, "How do you find your camel (now)?" I replied, "I find it quite well, now as
it has received your blessings." He said, "Will you sell it to me?" I felt shy (to refuse his offer) though
it was the only camel for irrigation we had. So, I said, "Yes." He said, "Sell it to me then." I sold it to
him on the condition that I should keep on riding it till I reached Medina. Then I said, "O Allah's
Apostle! I am a bridegroom," and requested him to allow me to go home. He allowed me, and I set out
for Medina before the people till I reached Medina, where I met my uncle, who asked me about the
camel and I informed him all about it and he blamed me for that. When I took the permission of
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) he asked me whether I had married a virgin or a matron and I replied that I had
married a matron. He said, "Why hadn't you married a virgin who would have played with you, and
you would have played with her?" I replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! My father died (or was martyred) and
I have some young sisters, so I felt it not proper that I should marry a young girl like them who would
neither teach them manners nor serve them. So, I have married a matron so that she may serve them
and teach them manners." When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) arrived in Medina, I took the camel to him the next
morning and he gave me its price and gave me the camel itself as well.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 56, Hadith 176
“I came to Abu
Tha’labah Al-Khushani and said: ‘How do you understand this
Verse?’ He
said: ‘Which verse?’ I said: “O you who believe!
Take care of your own
selves. If you follow the (right) guidance, no
hurt can come to you
from those who are in error.”? He said:
‘You have asked one who
knows about it. I asked the Messenger of
Allah (ﷺ) about it and he
said: “Enjoin good upon one another and
forbid one another to do evil,
but if you see overwhelming
stinginess, desires being followed, this
world being preferred (to
the Hereafter), every person with an opinion
feeling proud of it, and
you realize that you have no power to deal
with it, then you have to
mind your own business and leave the common
folk to their own
devices. After you will come days of patience,
during which patience
will be like grasping a burning ember, and one
who does good deeds
will have a reward like that of fifty men doing
the same deed.”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 89
Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) never told a lie but only thrice: two times for the sake of Allah (for example, his words): "I am sick," and his words: "But it was the big one amongst them which has done that" and because of Sara (his wife). He had come in a land inhabited by haughty and cruel men along with Sara. She was very good-looking amongst the people, so he said to her: If these people were to know that you are my wife they would snatch you away from me, so if they ask you tell them that you are my sister and in fact you are my sister in Islam, and I do not know of any other Muslim in this land besides I and you. And when they entered that land the tyrants came to see her and said to him (the king): 'There comes to your land a woman, whom you alone deserve to possess', so he (the king) sent someone (towards her) and she was brought to him, and Ibrahim (peace be upon him) stood in prayer. When she visited him (the tyrant king came) he could help but stretch his hand towards her and his hand was tied up. He said: 'Supplicate to Allah so that He may release my hand and I will do no harm to you.' She did that and the man repeated (the same highhandedness) and his hand was again tied up more tightly than on the first occasion. He said the same thing to her again, and she again did that (supplicated), but he repeated (the same highhandedness and his hands were tied up more tightly than on the previous occasion). He then again said: 'Supplicate your Lord so that He may set my hand free; by Allah I shall do no harm to you.' She did and his hand was freed. Then he called the person who had brought her and said to him: 'You have brought to me the satan and you have not brought to me a human being, so turn them out from my land,' and he gave Hajar as a gift to her. She returned (along with Hajar) and when Ibrahim (peace be upon him) saw her, he said: 'How have you returned?' She said: 'With full safety (have I returned). Allah held the hand of that debauch and he gave me a maid-servant.' Abu Huraira said: 'O sons of the rain of the sky, she is your mother.'
Sahih Muslim Book 43, Hadith 203
"I heard Abu Hurairah say: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever offers a prayer in which he does not recite Umm Al-Quran (Al Fatihah), it is deficient, it is deficient, it is deficient, incomplete." I (Abu As-Sa'ib) said: 'O Abu Hurairah, sometimes I am behind the Imam.' He poked me in the arm and said: 'Recite it to yourself, O Persian! For I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Allah says: "I have divided prayer between Myself and My slave into two halves, and My slave shall have what he has asked for.'" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Recite, for when the slave says: All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of all that exists, Allah says: 'My slave has praised Me.' And when he says: The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, Allah says: 'My slave has extolled Me.' And when he says: The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection), Allah says: 'My slave has glorified Me' . And when he says: You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help (for each and everything), He says: 'This is between Me and My slave, and My slave shall have what he has asked for.' And when he says: 'Guide us to the straight way, the way of those on whom You have bestowed Your grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray, He says: 'This is for My slave, and My slave shall have what he asked for.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 11, Hadith 34
"One morning, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was prevented from coming to us for Salat As-Subh, until we were just about to look for the eye of the sun (meaning sunrise). Then he came out quickly, had the Salat prepared for. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the Salat, and he performed his Salat in a relatively quick manner. When he said the Salam, he called aloud with his voice saying to us: 'Stay in your rows as you are.' Then he turned coming near to us, then he said: 'I am going to narrate to you what kept me from you this morning: I got up during the night, I performed Wudu and prayed as much as I was able to, and I dozed off during my Salat, and fell deep asleep. Then I saw my Lord, Blessed and Most High, in the best of appearances. He said: 'O Muhammad!' I said: 'My Lord here I am my Lord!' He said: 'What is it that the most exalted group busy themselves with?' I said: 'I do not know Lord.' And He said it three times." He said: "So I saw Him place His Palm between my shoulders, and I sensed the coolness of His Fingertips between my breast. Then everything was disclosed for me, and I became aware. So He said: 'O Muhammad!' I said: 'Here I am my Lord!' He said: 'What is it that the most exalted group busy themselves with?' I said: 'In the acts that atone.' He said: 'And what are they?' I said: 'The footsteps to the congregation, the gatherings in the Masajid after the Salat, Isbagh Al-Wudu during difficulties.' He said: 'Then what else?' I said: 'Feeding others, being lenient in speech, and Salat during the night while the people are sleeping.' He said: 'Ask.' I said: 'O Allah! I ask of you the doing of the good deeds, avoiding the evil deeds, loving the poor, and that You forgive me, and have mercy upon me. And when You have willed Fitnah in the people, then take me without the Fitnah. And I ask You for Your love, the love of whomever You love, and the love of the deeds that bring one nearer to Your love.'" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed it is true, so study it and learn it."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 47, Hadith 287
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Salim ibn
Abdullah said, ''Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan wrote to al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf
telling him not to disagree with Abdullah ibn Umar about anything to
do with the hajj. Then, when the day of Arafa came Abdullah ibn Umar
went to him just after noon, and I went with him. He called out to him
outside his tent, 'Where is this man?' and a-lHajjaj came out to him,
wearing a blanket dyed with safflower, and said to him, 'What's up
with you, Abu Abd ar-Rahman?' He said, 'Hurry up, if you want to
follow the sunna.' Al-Hajjaj said, 'At this hour?' and he said, 'Yes.'
Al-Hajjaj said, 'Wait until I have poured some water over myself, and
then I will come out.' So Abdullah dismounted and waited until al-
Hajjaj came out. He passed between me and my father and I said to him,
'If you want to accord with the sunna today, then make the khutba
short, do not delay the prayer and do the prayer quickly.' Then he
began looking at Abdullah ibn Umar to see if he would say the same
thing, and when Abdullah saw that, he said, 'What Salim is saying is
true.' "
20.64 Doing the Prayer at Mina on the Eighth Day of
Dhu-l-Hijja, and the Jumua at Mina and Arafa
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 206
“I came to ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin ‘As when he was sitting in
the shade of the Ka’bah, and the people were gathered around him,
and I heard him say: ‘While we were with the Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ) on a journey, he stopped to camp and some of us were pitching
tents, some were competing in shooting arrows and some were taking
the animals out to graze them. Then his caller called out: “As-Salatu
Jami’ah (prayer is about to begin).” So we gathered, and the
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up and addressed us. He said: “There
has never been a Prophet before me who was not obliged to tell his
nation of what he knew was good for them, and to warn against what he
knew was bad for them. With regard to this nation of yours, soundness
(of religious commitment) and well-being has been placed in its
earlier generations and the last of them will be afflicted with
calamities and things that you dislike. Then there will come
tribulations which will make the earlier ones pale into significance,
and the believer will say: ‘This will be the end of me,’ then
relief will come. Then (more) tribulations will come and the believer
will say: ‘This will be the end of me,’ then relief will come.
Whoever would like to be taken far away from Hell and admitted to
Paradise, let him die believing in Allah and the Last Day, and let
him treat people as he would like to be treated. Whoever gives his
oath of allegiance to a ruler and gives a sincere promise, let him
obey him as much as he can, and if another comes and challenges him,
let them strike the neck (i.e., kill) the second one.’” He the narrator said: “I raised my head among the people and said: 'I adjure you by Allah, did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?' He ('Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As) pointed with his hand to his ears and said: I heard it directly from him and memorized it.'”
Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 31
