(regarding the Verse): 'If any of you dies and leaves wives behind,' That was the period of the 'Iddah
which the widow was obliged to spend in the house of the late husband. Then Allah revealed: And
those of you who die and leave wives should bequeath for their wives a year's maintenance and
residence without turning them out, but if they leave, there is no blame on you for what they do of
themselves, provided it is honorable (i.e. lawful marriage) (2.240) Mujahid said: Allah has ordered
that a widow has the right to stay for seven months and twenty days with her husband's relatives
through her husband's will and testament so that she will complete the period of one year (of 'Iddah).
But the widow has the right to stay that extra period or go out of her husband's house as is indicated
by the statement of Allah: 'But if they leave there is no blame on you,... ' (2.240) Ibn `Abbas said: The
above Verse has cancelled the order of spending the period of the 'Iddah at her late husband's house,
and so she could spend her period of the 'Iddah wherever she likes. And Allah says: 'Without turning
them out.' 'Ata said: If she would, she could spend her period of the 'Iddah at her husband's house, and
live there according to her (husband's) will and testament, and if she would, she could go out (of her
husband's house) as Allah says: 'There is no blame on you for what they do of themselves.' (2.240)
'Ata added: Then the Verses of inheritance were revealed and the order of residence (for the widow)
was cancelled, and she could spend her period of the 'Iddah wherever she would like, and she was no
longer entitled to be accommodated by her husband's family.
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 68, Hadith 89
A man of the Ansar came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and begged from him.
He (the Prophet) asked: Have you nothing in your house? He replied: Yes, a piece of cloth, a part of which we wear and a part of which we spread (on the ground), and a wooden bowl from which we drink water.
He said: Bring them to me. He then brought these articles to him and he (the Prophet) took them in his hands and asked: Who will buy these? A man said: I shall buy them for one dirham. He said twice or thrice: Who will offer more than one dirham? A man said: I shall buy them for two dirhams.
He gave these to him and took the two dirhams and, giving them to the Ansari, he said: Buy food with one of them and hand it to your family, and buy an axe and bring it to me. He then brought it to him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fixed a handle on it with his own hands and said: Go, gather firewood and sell it, and do not let me see you for a fortnight. The man went away and gathered firewood and sold it. When he had earned ten dirhams, he came to him and bought a garment with some of them and food with the others.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then said: This is better for you than that begging should come as a spot on your face on the Day of Judgment. Begging is right only for three people: one who is in grinding poverty, one who is seriously in debt, or one who is responsible for compensation and finds it difficult to pay.
Sunan Abi Dawud Book 9, Hadith 86
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered us to do seven things and forbade us from seven. He ordered us to visit the
sick, to follow funeral processions, (to say) to a sneezer, (May Allah bestow His Mercy on you, if he
says, Praise be to Allah), to accept invitations, to greet (everybody), to help the oppressed and to help
others to fulfill their oaths. He forbade us to wear gold rings, to drink in silver (utensils), to use
Mayathir (silken carpets placed on saddles), to wear Al-Qissi (a kind of silken cloth), to wear silk,
Dibaj or Istabraq (two kinds of silk).
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 74, Hadith 61
"I was prayed and the Prophet, Abu Bakr, and Umar were there, so when I sat, I started off with praising Allah, then sending Salat upon the Prophet, then supplicating for myself. So the Prophet said: 'Ask, your request will be granted, ask, your request will be ranted.'"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 6, Hadith 50
"Mu'awiyah, (may Allah be pleased with him,) said: 'The Messenger of Allah went out to a circle - meaning, of his Companions - and said: 'What are you doing?' They said: 'We have come together to pray to Allah and praise Him for guiding us to His religion, and blessing us with you.' He said: 'I ask you, by Allah, is that the only reason?' They said: 'By Allah, we have not come together for any other reason.' He said: 'I am not asking you to swear to an oath because of any suspicion; rather Jibril came to me and told me that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is boasting of you to the angels.'"
Sunan an-Nasa'i Book 49, Hadith 48
I came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) along with a group of Ash'arites requesting to give us a mount. He (the Holy Prophet) said: By Allah, I cannot provide you with a mount, and there is nothing with me which I should give you as a ride. He (the narrator) said: We stayed there as long as Allah willed. Then there were brought to him (to the Holy Prophet) camels. He (the Holy Prophet) then ordered to give us three white humped camels, We started and said (or some of us said to the others): Allah will not bless us. We came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) begging him to provide us with riding camels. He swore that he could not provide us with a mount, but later on he provided us with that. They (some of the Prophet's Companions) came and informed him about this (rankling of theirs), whereupon he said: It was not I who provided you with a mount, but Allah has provided you with that. So far as I am concerned, by Allah, if He so wills, I would not swear, but if, later on, I would see better than it, I (would break the vow) and expiate it and do that which is better.
Sahih Muslim Book 27, Hadith 10
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar
ibn Ubaydullah, that Abu Murra, the mawla of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, told
him that he had heard Umm Hani bint Abi Talib say, "I went to the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the
year of the conquest and found him doing ghusl while his daughter
Fatima, was screening him with a garment. I said to him, 'Peace be
upon you' and he said, 'Who is that?' I replied, 'Umm Hani bint Abi
Talib,' and he said, 'Welcome, Umm Hani!' When he had finished his
ghusl, he stood and prayed eight rakas, covering himself with one
garment, and then came away. I said, 'Messenger of Allah, the son of
my mother, AIi, says that he is determined to kill so-and-so, son of
Hubayra, a man I have placed under my protection.' The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'We give
protection to whoever you have given protection to, Umm Hani.' "
Umm Hani related that this incident happened in the morning.
